  • In order to gain better understanding of the selective surface oxidation and its influence on the galvanizability of a transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) assisted steel containing 1.5 wt.% Si and 1.6 wt.% Mn, a model experiment has been carried out by depositing Si and Mn (each with a nominal thickness of 10 nm) in either monolayers or bilayers on a low-alloy interstitial-free (IF) steel sheet. After intercritical annealing at $800^{\circ}C$ in a $N_2$ ambient with a dew point of $-40^{\circ}C$, the surface scale formed on 590 MPa TRIP steel exhibited a microstructure similar to that of the scale formed on the Mn/Si bilayer-coated IF steel, consisting of $Mn_{2}SiO_{4}$ particles embedded in an amorphous $SiO_{2}$ film. The present study results indicated that, during the intercritical annealing process of 590 MPa TRIP steel, surface segregation of Si occurs first to form an amorphous $SiO_{2}$ film, which in turn accelerates the out-diffusion of Mn to form more stable Mn-Si oxide particles on the steel surface. During hot-dip galvanizing, particulate $Fe_{3}O_{4}$, MnO, and Si-Mn oxides were reduced more readily by Al in a Zn bath than the amorphous $SiO_{2}$ film. Therefore, in order to improve the galvanizability of 590 TRIP steel, it is most desirable to minimize the surface segregation of Si during the intercritical annealing process.

  • In this paper, an active vibration control of a tensioned, elastic, axially moving string is investigated. The dynamics of the translating string are described with a non-linear partial differential equation coupled with an ordinary differential equation. A right boundary control to suppress the transverse vibrations of the translating continuum is proposed. The control law is derived via the Lyapunov second method. The exponential stability of the closed-loop system is verified. The effectiveness of the proposed control law is simulated.

  • The effect of nitrogen finishing for the control of coating weight in a nitrogen sealing box on the coating surface property in hot dip galvanizing process has been studied. The coated surface is free of oxide marks and edge overcoated. The coating uniformity is excellent ; the standard deviation of the coating thickness along width of the specimen was $1~1.2\mu\textrm{m}$ in the box whereas $2.5~3\mu\textrm{m}$ in the air. Considering surface quality of the coating such as oxide mark, edge overcoated and zinc dust, the oxygen content between 40 and 200 ppm was suggested in the box in addition the oxygen content of at least 40 ppm or the minimum dew point of $-27^{\circ}C$ is required to prevent a zinc vaporization.

  • Due to high corrosion resistance, Zinc has been widely used in the automobile, shipping or construction industries as a galvanizing material. Zinc is popular as a coating element, but its low mechanical strength impede the expansion of applications as a load-bearing structure. The mechanical strength of Zinc can be increased through zinc based alloy process, but the ductility is significantly reduced. In this study, the mechanical strength and ductility of Zinc-Magnesium alloys with respect to heat treatment hold time was investigated. In order to enhance the mechanical strength of Zinc, a Zinc-Magnesium alloy was fabricated by a melting process. The heat treatment process was performed to improve the ductility of Zinc-Magnesium alloy. The microstructure of the heat-treated alloy specimen was analyzed using SEM. The hardness and compressive strength of the specimen were measured by a micro-hardness tester and a nano-indenter, respectively.

  • Four air hardening steels with carbon, silicon, manganese, chromium, and molybdenum variations have been used in this study to find out the optimal chemical compositions of steels with over 1200 MPa tensile strength for automotive subframe. The dimensional changes after heat treatment were determined for two automotive parts with open and closed cross sections using 3D scanner. When four steels were austenitized at 900℃ for 30 seconds, cooled at 3℃/s, reheated to 450℃ for 10 seconds followed by air cooling to simulate hot-dip galvanizing treatment showed ultra high tensile strength over 1200 MPa. Rear floor cross member with open cross section revealed much bigger dimensional changes than subframe with closed cross section after heat treatment at 900℃ for 20 minutes followed by air cooling.

  • Metal casting is a process in which molten metal or liquid metal is poured into a mold made of sand, metal, or ceramic. The mold contains a cavity of the desired shape to form geometrically complex parts. The casting process is used to create complex shapes that are difficult to make using conventional manufacturing practices. For the optimal casting process design of sleeve parts, various analyses were performed in this study using commercial finite element analysis software. The simulation was focused on the behaviors of molten metal during the mold filling and solidification stages for the precision and sand casting products. This study developed high-life sleeve parts for the sink roll of continuous hot-dip galvanizing equipment by applying a wear-resistant alloy casting process.

  • Radiant tube heaters are widely used for indirect heating in heat treatment processes such as continuous annealing line(CAL) or continuous galvanizing line(CGL). Main issues for radiant tube are temperature uniformity, lifetime, thermal efficiency. To achieve higher heat release, the radiant tubes are fired at a higher fuel rate and therefore local overheating occur. A numerical simulation based on a commercial code FLUENT has been performed to investigate local overheating of radiant tube heaters. To minimize local overheating, the effects of radiating fins, flue gas recirculation(FGR), two-stage combustion were investigated. More uniform temperature distribution was achieved in the longitudinal direction within the tube with radiating fins and this contributed to increase the life of radiant tubes. Furthermore, the radiant tube with radiating fins was proven to be more efficient than the one without fins. The effects of flue gas recirculation and two stage combustion on the efficiency of the radiant tube were also considered and the results were presented.

  • The NGK suspension insulators are subjected in harsh environments in service above 40 years long time. The long term reliability of the insulators is required for both mechanical and electrical performances. This study describes some electrical performances according to KEPCO-standard. There was fail in electrical and mechanical performance test such as galvanizing, low-frequence wet flashover voltage, puncture and combine mechanical & electrical strength test. The NGK suspension insulators of 1968 were shown lower electrical and mechanical performance than those of 1979.

  • In a CGL(Continuous Galvanizing Line) in steel making plants, zinc-coated steel sheets are produced. These sheets are used where long running corrosion resistivity is required. During the coating process top dross is produced, being harmful to the quality of the coating. To collect and remove this top dross, an automation system is developed consisting of a robot and its carriage system, a pot level sensor, a system controller, and specialtools. Forthe first, the level of the pot must be measured and fed back to the robot controller to avoid submersion of the robot hand in the hot pot. In this paper, acoustic and laser distance sensors are tested for the appropriate pot lvel sensor, especially the former in the view point of hot environment.
