  • This paper predicted nonlinear dynamic responses of a cantilevered carbon nanotube(CNT) resonator incorporating the electrostatic forces and van der Waals interactions between the CNT cantilever and ground plane. The structural model of CNT includes geometric and inertial nonlinearities to investigate various phenomena of nonlinear responses of the CNT due to the electrostatic excitation. In order to solve this problem, we used Galerkin's approximation and the numerical integration techniques. As a result, the CNT nano-resonator shows the softening effect through saddle-node bifurcation near primary resonance frequency with increasing the applied AC and DC voltages. Also we can predict nonlinear secondary resonances such as superharmonic and subharmonic resonances. The superharmonic resonance of the nano-resonator is influenced by applied AC voltage. The period-doubling bifurcation leads to the subharmonic resonance which occurs when the nano-resonator is actuated by electrostatic forces as parametric excitation.

  • A method for the non-destructive detection of damage using parameterized partial differential equations and Galerkin approximation techniques is presented. This method provides the theoretical and experimental verification of a nondestructive time domain approach to examine structural damage in smart structure. The time histories of the vibration response of structure were used to identify the presence of damage. Damage in a structure causes changes in the physical coefficients of mass density, elastic modulus and damping coefficient. This paper examines the beam-like structures with PVDF sensor and PZT actuator to perform identification of those physical parameters and to detect the...

  • A method to design a boundary controller for global stabilization of three-dimensional nonlinear dynamics of flexible marine risers is presented in this paper. Equations of motion of the risers are first developed in a vector form. The boundary controller at the top end of the risers is then designed based on Lyapunov's direct method. Proof of existence and uniqueness of the solutions of the closed loop control system is carried out by using the Galerkin approximation method. It is shown that when there are no environmental disturbances, the proposed boundary controller is able to force the riser to be globally exponentially stable at its equilibrium position. When there are environmental disturbances, the riser is stabilized in the neighborhood of its equilibrium position by the proposed boundary controller.

  • The vibration of an axially moving string is studied when the string has geometric non-linearity and translating acceleration. Based upon the von karman strain theory, The equation for the longitudinal vibration is linear and uncoupled, while the equation for the transverse vibration is non-linear and coupled between the longitudinal and transverse deflections. The governing equations are discretized by using the Galerkin approximation. With the discretized nonlinear equations, the time responses are investigated by using the generalized-${\alpha}$ method.

  • Nonlinear Vibration of a flexible circular ring is studied in this paper. Based upon the von Karman strain theory, the nonlinear governing equations are derived, in which the in-plane bending and extension displacements as well as the out-of-plane bending displacement are fully coupled. After discretizing the governing equations by the Galerkin approximation method, we obtain the linearlized equation by using the pertubation method. The results from the linearlized equations show that the in-plane displacement has effects on the natural frequencies of the out-of-plane displacement.

The cantilevered CNT shows complex dynamic responses and instabilities due to the applied ac and ac voltages, and driving frequencies. • The longitudinal and lateral in-plane vibrations of an axially moving membrane are investigated when the membrane has translating acceleration. By extended Hamilton's principle, the governing equations are derived. The equations of motion for the in-plane vibrations are linear and coupled. These equations are discretized by using the Galerkin approximation method after they are transformed into the variational equations, j.e., the weak forms so that the admissible functions can be used for the bases of the in-plane deflections. With the discretized equations for the in-plane vibrations, the natural frequencies and the time histories of the deflections are obtained.

  • In this paper, behaviour of underground structural systems due to excavation and change of groundwater level is analyzed using finite elements. Equilibrium equations based on the effective pressure theory and transient flow equations considering the groundwater level are derived. Integration equations are derived using Galerkin's approximation and time dependent analysis is employed to compute groundwater level change and pore pressures. This computed pore pressures are employed in equilibrium equations and then finally displacements and stresses are computed. The developed program is applied to analyze the behaviour of ground excavation below the groundwater level. The program is also applied to multi-step excavation at the same model. The results show that the displacements of the ground surface are much influenced by the change of the groundwater level. Therefore, it is concluded that the change of the groundwater level should be considered in order to analyze the behaviour of the underground structural systems accurately
