  • Few studies on the finless porpoise Neophocaena asiaeorientalis have been conducted on the south coast of Korea. This region includes Gadeok Island, which is located off the Korean peninsula in an area of heavy maritime traffic. Sighting surveys of finless porpoises were conducted at seven predetermined spots around Gadeok Island in January, May, July, September, and November 2016. Finless porpoises (127 individuals in 24 schools) were sighted at all but one (spot P5) of the survey locations. Fewer porpoises were spotted in summer (Jul and Sep) than in other seasons (P<0.05). Porpoises were most abundant around the south coast of the island, where they were spotted in every season, and in significantly higher numbers than at other locations (P<0.05). Single individuals accounted for 20.8% of sightings, while 25.0% of sighted schools consisted of only two porpoises. The mean school size was 5.29 individuals (SD=6.72).

  • We aim to unveil dietary history recorded in Neolithic human bone from Janghang site at Gadeok Island, Busan. Excavation of Janghang site at Gadeok Island from 2010 to 2011 is an outstanding discovery in Korean Neolithic archaeology. A large number of human bones (48 individuals) were found at Janghang site, which is the largest-scale Neolithic cemetery in Korea. We extracted human bone collagen from 10 individuals and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis were carried out using carbon and nitrogen analyzer connected to a continuous-flow isotope-ratio-monitoring mass-spectrometer. Although bone histological analysis shows poor preservation state, stable isotope results correspond well with bone collagen quality indicator, which implies that bone collagen reflects lifetime signature. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope result indicates highly marinebased diet(${\delta}^{13}$C=$-14.5{\pm}1.3$‰, ${\delta}^{15}$N=$-17.4{\pm}1.7$‰, n=10), however the possible input of terrestrial animal and wild plant cannot be excluded. Our isotopic findings provide an invaluable information on Neolithic subsistence economy in this coastal area. In addition, Janghang site shows specific features in burial methods and burial goods. Two different burial methods of arranging bodies are found with extended burial type and particularly high ratio of flexed burial type. There are also burial goods such as pottery. However, there are no significant isotopic differences according to burial methods and burial goods. Although this is a preliminary study on this site, our research will provide important clues in understanding isotopic dietary history of Korean Neolithic people.

  • Vibrio vulnificus is a Gram-negative marine bacterium known to cause septicemia. This study was conducted to investigate the distribution of V. vulnificus along the coast of Gadeok Island in Korea and to determine the molecular characteristics of isolated strains sampled between March and November 2019 from seawater. The strains were mostly detected between July and September, when the average water temperature and average salinity were 22.2-26.2℃ and 14.2-29.9 psu, respectively. V. vulnificus was not detected in seawater below 15℃. In September, the highest population of V. vulnificus was observed at 2,100 MPN (most probable number)/100 mL, attributable to decreased salinity from heavy rains. In addition, the detection rate of V. vulnificus was higher at the sampling station near the Nakdong River. Virulence-related genes were also identified among the isolates, such as vvhA (97.1%), viuB (44.1%), and vcgC (57.4%). In particular, viuB and vcgC were only observed in V. vulnificus isolated from June to September, when the detection rate was high and water temperature was above 20℃, suggesting the role of seasonal characteristics.

  • We investigated the distribution, molecular characteristics, and antimicrobial resistance of Vibrio vulnificus isolated from seawater at Gadeok Island, the Republic of Korea between June to October. Interestingly no isolates were detected between December to February. The detection rate of V. vulnificus was high (80-100%) from July to September 2019 and from June to September 2020. This coincided with the relatively low salinity of the seawater, which ranged from 7.8-29.9 practical salinity units for that period. Additionally, V. vulnificus had a high detection rate at sampling stations near the Nakdong river. The detection rates of virulence genes, such as vvhA, viuB, and vcgC, among the isolates were 97.1%, 44.1%, and 57.4% in 2019 and 100%, 43.0%, and 50.0% in 2020, respectively. Notably, viuB and vcgC were detected in V. vulnificus isolated between June to October when water temperature was above 20℃. The antimicrobial susceptibility analysis of 80 isolates revealed that most of the strains were susceptible to most antimicrobial agents. However, some isolates showed intermediate resistance to cefepime (18.8%), cefoxitin (58.8%), and erythromycin (22.5%). Of note, 3.8% of the tested strains were resistant to cefoxitin. The minimum inhibitory concentration of highly cefoxitin-resistant strains was determined to be less than 32 ㎍/mL.

  • Little is known about the movements of finless porpoises Neophocaena asiaeorientalis and their relationship with sea surface temperature (SST). A female finless porpoise that was stranded alive on the shore at Busan was rehabilitated for 16 months at the Sea Life Busan Aquarium. The porpoise was released off Geoje Island with a satellite tag on her mid-ridge and tracking data were received for 7 days. The porpoise moved directly to the southern shore of Gadeok Island, where an earlier study reported that finless porpoises were most abundant around the island. The tracking route revealed two other potential primary habitats. The porpoise moved to the middle of the east coast of the Korean Peninsula at Uljin, beyond the distribution boundary known from earlier studies. Satellite infrared images detected a cold water mass off the Uljin coast and the tracking route showed that the porpoise avoided this low-temperature area.

  • Vibrio vulnificus is an aquatic bacterium causing septicemia and wound infection in humans. To understand this pathogen at the genomic level, it was performed whole genome sequencing of a cefoxitin-resistant strain, V. vulnificus 1908-10 possessing virulence-related genes (vvhA, viuB, and vcgC) isolated from Gadeok island coastal seawater in South Korea. The genome of V. vulnificus 1908-10 consisted of two circular contigs and no plasmid. The total genome size was estimated to be 5,018,425 bp with a guanine-cytosine (GC) content of 46.9%. We found 119 tRNA and 34 rRNA genes respectively in the genome, along with 4,352 predicted protein sequences. Virulence factor (VF) analysis further revealed that V. vulnificus 1908-10 possess various virulence genes in classes of adherence, antiphagocytosis, chemotaxis and motility, iron uptake, quorum sensing, secretion system, and toxin. In the comparison of the presence/absence of virulence genes, V. vulnificus 1908-10 had fur, hlyU, luxS, ompU, pilA, pilF, rtxA, rtxC, and vvhA. Of the 30 V. vulnificus comparative strains, 80% of the C-genotype strains have all of these genes, whereas 40% of the E-genotype strains have all of them. In particular, pilA were identified in 80% of the C-type strains and 40% of the E-type strains, showing more difference than other genes. Therefore, V. vulnificus 1908-10 had similar VF characteristics to those of type C strains. Multifunctional-autoprocessing repeats-in-toxin (MARTX) toxin of V. vulnificus 1908-10 contained 8 A-type repeats (GXXGXXXXXG), 25 B.1-type repeats (TXVGXGXX), 18 B2-type repeats (GGXGXDXXX), and 7 C-type repeats (GGXGXDXXX). The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) showed that the RtxA protein of V. vulnificus 1908-10 had the effector domain in the order of cross-liking domain (ACD)-C58_PaToxP-like domain- α/β hydrolase-C58_PaToxP-like domain.

  • We report the distributions of Sb and As in the surface sediment of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea. The mean concentrations of Sb and As range from 0.68 ppm to 1.01 ppm and from 7.4 ppm to 15.8 ppm, respectively, and show relatively the high concentrations at the coast of Weolseong in the East Sea for Sb and at the coast of Gadeok Island in the South Sea far As. This may be due to the anthropogenic input of these elements via river and atmosphere from industry complex and agriculture regions around the study areas. Because of the difference of clay to silt proportion, the correlation between silt plus clay contents and Sb, As in the coastal surface sediment of Korea is not shown, the concentrations of Sb and As vary widely for the sample in which the silt plus clay contents are the same. Therefore, we suggest that the distribution patterns of Sb and As in surface sediment of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea are mainly controlled by the anthropogenic inputs and the sediment characteristics. On the other hand, the Sb concentrations are lower than those of the lowest effect level which is the standard of judgment for contamination, while the As concentrations are higher than those of the lowest effect level. This implies that the surface sediments of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea are considerably contaminated for As.

  • Today, the problem of the logistics rationalization has significant meanings as one of the new strategies for improving the power in the international competition. In order to achieve the logistics rationalization, the enhanced recognition to logistics of each enterprise is essential. However, the complete arrangement of the logistics external environment, that is, logistics infrastructure is also one of the most important matters. In this respect, to rationalize the container logistics, this paper deals with the strategies for strengthening the function of Pusan port which is handling the 95% of the export and import container. Some suggestions for those are as follows : First, the coastal container transportation system must be strengthened to dissolute the preponderance of road transportation. Second, a new large port must be developed at Gadeok island to handle the increasing container traffic in the years of 2000. Third, the port authority must be established under the cooperation of the central government and local government to comply with the necessity of the synthetic control for city and port. Fourth, the Inland Clearance Depot in going must be promptly completed to establish the efficient and synthetic container logistics system.
