The performance of General-Purpose computation on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU) is heavily dependent on the memory access behavior. This sensitivity is due to a combination of the underlying Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) execution model present on GPUs and the lack of architectural support to handle irregular memory access patterns. Application performance can be significantly improved by applying memory-access-pattern-aware optimizations that can exploit knowledge of the characteristics of each access pattern. In this paper, we present an algorithmic methodology to semi-automatically find the best mapping of memory accesses present in serial loop nest to underlying data-parallel architectures based on a comprehensive static memory access pattern analysis. To that end we present a simple, yet powerful, mathematical model that captures all memory access pattern information present in serial data-parallel loop nests. We then show how this model is used in practice to select the most appropriate memory space for data and to search for an appropriate thread mapping and work group size from a large design space. To evaluate the effectiveness of our methodology, we report on execution speedup using selected benchmark kernels that cover a wide range of memory access patterns commonly found in GPGPU workloads. Our experimental results are reported using the industry standard heterogeneous programming language, OpenCL, targeting the NVIDIA GT200 architecture.

Apache Spark is one of the high performance in-memory computing frameworks for big-data processing. Recently, to improve the performance, general-purpose computing on graphics processing unit(GPGPU) is adapted to Apache Spark framework. Previous Spark-GPGPU frameworks focus on overcoming the difficulty of an implementation resulting from the difference between the computation environment of GPGPU and Spark framework. In this paper, we propose a Spark framework based on a heterogenous pipeline computing with OpenCL to further improve the performance. The proposed framework overlaps the Java-to-Native memory copies of CPU with CPU-GPU communications(DMA) and GPU kernel computations to hide the CPU idle time. Also, CPU-GPU communication buffers are implemented with switching dual buffers, which reduce the mapped memory region resulting in decreasing memory mapping overhead. Experimental results showed that the proposed Spark framework based on a heterogenous pipeline computing with OpenCL had up to 2.13 times faster than the previous Spark framework using OpenCL.
A 3D graphics pipeline is largely divided into geometry stage and rendering stage. In this paper, we propose a method that accelerates a geometry processing in multi-core GP-GPU, using dual-phase structure. It can be improved by parallel data processing using SIMD of GP-GPU, dual-phase structure and memory prefetch. The proposed architecture improves approximately 19% of performance when it use all the features.

First In First Out(FIFO)

Unlike general-purpose CPUs, the GPUs have been specialized as many-core streaming processors, and are frequently replacing the CPUs in an increasing range of computations thanks to their outstanding parallel computing capacity. In order to respond to such trend, NVIDIA has recently issued a new parallel computing architecture called CUDA(Compute Unified Device Architecture), offering a flexible GPU programming environment for GPGPU(General Purpose GPU) computing. In general, when programmers use the CUDA API, they should clearly understand many aspects of GPU's computing architecture to produce efficient parallel software. In this article, we explain several optimization techniques for CUDA programming that we have verified through a lot of experiment and trial and error, and review how those techniques affect the performance of code execution. In particular, we use a specific problem as an example to analyze several elements that affect performances, such as effective accesses to hierarchical memory system, processor occupancy, and latency hiding. In conclusion, we present several directions that may be utilized effectively in CUDA-based parallel programming.

LRR(Loose Round Robin) warp scheduling policy for GPU architecture results in high warp-level parallelism and balanced loads across multiple warps. However, traditional LRR policy makes multiple warps execute long latency operations at the same time. In cases that no more warps to be issued under long latency, the throughput of GPUs may be degraded significantly. In this paper, we propose a new warp scheduling policy which utilizes latency hiding, leading to more utilized memory resources in high performance GPUs. The proposed warp scheduler prioritizes memory instruction based on GTO(Greedy Then Oldest) policy in order to provide reduced memory stalls. When no warps can execute memory instruction any more, the warp scheduler selects a warp for computation instruction by round robin manner. Furthermore, our proposed technique achieves high performance by using additional information about recently committed warps. According to our experimental results, our proposed technique improves GPU performance by 12.7% and 5.6% over LRR and GTO on average, respectively.
The volume ray-casting method is one of the direct volume rendering methods that produces high-quality images as well as manipulates semi-transparent object. Although the volume ray-casting method produces high-quality image by sampling in the region of interest, its rendering speed is slow since the color acquisition process is complicated for repetitive memory reference and accumulation of sample values. Recently, the GPU-based acceleration techniques are introduced. However, they require pre-processing or additional memory. In this paper, we propose efficient point-primitive based method to overcome complicated computation of GPU ray-casting. It presents semi-transparent objects, however it does not require preprocessing and additional memory. Our method is fast since it generates point-primitives from volume dataset during sampling process and it projects the primitives onto the image plane. Also, our method can easily cope with OTF change because we can add or delete point-primitive in real-time.
Graphical processing unit (GPU) contains many arithmetic logic units (ALUs). Because many ALUs can be exploited to process parallel processing, GPU provides efficient data processing. The spatial data require many geographic coordinates to represent the shape of them in a map. The coordinates are usually stored as geodetic longitude and latitude. To display a map in 2-dimensional Cartesian coordinate system, the geodetic longitude and latitude should be converted to the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinate system. The conversion to the other coordinate system and the rendering process to represent the converted coordinates to screen use complex floating-point computations. In this paper, we propose a parallel processing technique that processes the conversion and the rendering using the GPU to improve the performance. Large spatial data is stored in the disk on files. To process the large amount of spatial data efficiently, we propose a technique that merges the spatial data files to a large file and access the file with the method of memory mapped file. We implement the proposed technique and perform the experiment with the 747,302,971 points of the TIGER/Line spatial data. The result of the experiment is that the conversion time for the coordinate systems with the GPU is 30.16 times faster than the CPU only method and the rendering time is 80.40 times faster than the CPU.
R-trees are widely used in various areas such as geographical information systems, CAD systems and spatial databases in order to efficiently index multi-dimensional data. As data sets used in these areas grow in size and complexity, however, range query operations on R-tree are needed to be further faster to meet the area-specific constraints. To address this problem, there have been various research efforts to develop strategies for acceleration query processing on R-tree by using the buffer mechanism or parallelizing the query processing on R-tree through multiple disks and processors. As a part of the strategies, approaches which parallelize query processing on R-tree through Graphics Processor Units(GPUs) have been explored. The use of GPUs may guarantee improved performances resulting from faster calculations and reduced disk accesses but may cause additional overhead costs caused by high memory access latencies and low data exchange rate between GPUs and the CPU. In this paper, to address the overhead problems and to adapt GPUs efficiently, we propose a novel approach which uses a GPU as a buffer to parallelize query processing on R-tree. The use of buffer algorithm can give improved performance by reducing the number of disk access and maximizing coalesced memory access resulting in minimizing GPU memory access latencies. Through the extensive performance studies, we observed that the proposed approach achieved up to 5 times higher query performance than the original CPU-based R-trees.

Increasing Internet traffic and forwarding table size need high performance IP address lookup engine which is a crucial function of routers. For finding the longest matching prefix, trie-based or its variant schemes have been widely researched in software-based IP lookup. As a software router, we enhance the IP address lookup engine using GPU which is a device widely used in high performance applications. We propose a data structure for multibit trie to exploit GPU hardware efficiently. Also, we devise a novel scheme that the root subtrie is loaded on Shared Memory which is specialized for fast access in GPU. Since the root subtrie is accessed on every IP address lookup, its fast access improves the lookup performance. By means of the performance evaluation, our implemented GPU-based lookup engine shows 17~23 times better performance than CPU-based engine. Also, the fast access technique for the root subtrie gives 10% more improvement.
