  • Geographic information system (GIS) based renewable energy resource map including potential analysis can play a crucial role not only to develop the national plan for renewable energy deployment but also to make strategic investment decision in the private sector. Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) has been developing domestic maps about several resources such as solar, wind, hydro, biomass, and geothermal, as well as conducting research on methodologies for potential analysis. Furthermore, the institute is trying to transfer related technologies and know-how to foreign countries, recently. In this context, the main purpose of this study is to introduce the business model of renewable energy resource map. From the value chain analysis, we focus on the government-side market in foreign countries, such as the development of the national level renewable energy resource map and the support of the national renewable energy plan. For about 180 countries, we segment the customers according to the consideration of economic capacity, renewable energy resource capacity, existence of renewable resource map, current portion of renewable energy facility capacity, and renewable energy policies, and we conclude that the target customers are non-Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (non-OECD) countries or some OECD countries, their per capita GDP are under the average among OECD countries, that do not have renewable resource map yet. We segment the target customers into four groups, and suggest different strategies for market positioning and financing strategy based on Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) analysis. This study can help to develop the business strategy about the development of renewable energy resource map in foreign countries.

  • This study utilizes the meta-analysis for the benefits transfer (MA-BT) approach to measure social costs the 7 target sites in the City and County of Honolulu. The estimated MA models (MA-1 and MA-1) were evaluated in terms of validity and reliability criteria. This study utilized a parametric t-test and a non-parametric sign rank test for checking validity. A transfer error measured by an absolute percentage difference was utilized to check reliability their similarity. The GIS was utilized for data collection in order to measure social costs for each target site. The results clearly demonstrated that social costs were substantially higher thant direct costs and varied market conditions and different methods used. In terms of validity and reliability criteria, MA models were preferred to the mean transfer value approach. MA-BT approach is desirable for measuring social costs for a project designed to measure social costs for these 7 proposed landfill sites with inaccessible data, on short time frames, and with little money. If researchers and planners have enough time and money, they can implement primary research. If not, the meta-analysis for the benefits transfer approach can be much better than no framework. The use of a GIS can help to identify secondary data within a specific radius of each target site.

  • It will become necessary for farmers to adopt information technology into commercialized farming system, since its productivity is increasingly linked to how to exploit the agricultural information. The purpose of this study is to examine the current status of information technology and to suggest ways to utilize the information technology for innovative farm management. Internet should become more important instruments which farmers might utilize in order to collect and mine the agricultural information because of its rapidity, reliability and precision. Also farmers should be encouraged to adopt a GIS-based farm management decision support system and to integrate the market information and geographic information such as soil, water, temperature, etc. for optimal decision making. Another way of improving farm management is to make farmers use agricultural accounting software for individual farmers and develop farming simulation system which analyze a farmer's current financial condition and suggest how to improve it. Making home page would be major marketing strategy for farmers to promote the sales of agricultural products.

  • The assessed land values and housing prices have been widely utilized as a basic information for the land and house trades and for evaluating governmental and local taxes. However, there exists a price difference in actual markets between the assessment level and assessed land values or housing prices. This paper emphasizes the spatial mismatch between the assessed land values and housing market prices and particularly addresses the following two aspects by focusing on spatial effects of the modifiable areal units, which would substantially affect the estimation of the assessed land values and housing prices. First, we examine the spatial distributions of the assessed land values and housing market prices, and the gap between those prices, on the basis of the aggregated spatial units(i.e., aggregation districts). Second, we explore the scale effect of the MAUP(modifiable areal unit problem) generally embedded in estimating the prices of the sampled standard lands and houses, and calibrating the correction index for the land values and housing prices for the individuals. For the application, we analysed the land values and housing prices in Seoul utilizing GIS and statistical software. As a result, some spatial clusters that the housing market prices are significantly higher than the assessed land values were identified at a finer geographic level. Also, it was empirically revealed that the statistical results from the regression of regional variables on the assessed land values for the individuals are significantly affected by the aggregation levels of the spatial units.

  • This study proposed a method to analyze the economic benefit of the national map revision program using the replacement cost method. The replacement cost method measures the benefit of a project as the minimum cost to replace functions of the project with those of alternative goods or services in an existing market. Thus, the demands on 1/5,000 topographic map revision in 18 administrative tasks such as city and district management planning were surveyed in three local autonomous entities. Then the cost to alternatively fulfill the demands was estimated with the standard construction estimating system for the field surveying and surveying results in commercial GIS companies for the site investigation. With this cost estimation model, the benefit of the current national map revision program to the local autonomous entities was estimated as 265,960,999 won. And cost benefit ratios according to several revision frequencies from 0.5 to 4 year were also compared to find the optimal frequency.

  • When and Where, What kind of agricultural products will be produced and provided for the market? It is a commercial requirement, and also an academic questions to remote sensing technology. Crop physiology analysis and growth monitoring are important elements for precision agriculture management. Remote sensing technology supplies us more selections and available spaces in this dynamic change study by producing images of different spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions. Especially, the hyperspectral remote sensing should do play a key role in crop growth investigation at national, regional and global scales. In the past five years, Chinese academy of sciences and Japan NTT-DATA have made great efforts to establish a prototype information service system to dynamically survey the vegetable planting situation in Nagano area of Japan mainly based on remote sensing data. For such concern, a flexible and light-duty flight system and some practical data processing system and some necessary background information should be rationally made together. In addition, some studies are also important, such as quick pre-processing for hyperspectral data, Multi-temporal vegetation index analysis, hyperspectral image classification in support of GIS data, etc. In this paper, several spectral data analysis models and a designed airborne platform are provided and discussed here.
