The noise . vibration characteristics of Hypoid gears which were made from three seperate materials(SCM, TSCM, SNCM) under the identical process were investigated for the sake of durability improvement of differential gear compatible with low level noise gear set. For this study, we developed a rig experimental equipment which can perform close noise.vibration experiment of differential gear. Consequently, we could analyze the noise.vibration characteristics of final reduction gear by materials, and also we observed changes in both metallic structure and hardness according to the materials of pinion gear. In addition to this, the correlation between the vibration of the differential gear and the interior noise of the passenger vehicles was proved by analyzing the results of rig vibration experiment and field noise test.
Gears are essential elements for mechanical power transmission. Geometric precision is the main factor for characterizing gear grade and qualify. Gear pitch is one of the crucial measurements, which is defined as a distance between two adjacent gear teeth. It is well-known that variability in gear pitches may causes wear-out and vibration noise. Therefore maintaining pitch errors at a low level plays a key role in assuring the gear quality to customers. This paper is concerned with a case study, which presents a computerized system for Inspecting pitch errors in a gear machining process. This system consists of a PC and window-based programs. Although the start and stop is manually accomplished, the process of measuring and analyzing pitch data is automatically conducted in this system. Our purpose lies in reducing inspection cost and time as well as Increasing test reliability. Its operation is briefly illustrated by example. Sometimes a strong autocorrelation is observed from pitch data. We also discuss a process monitoring scheme taking account of autocorrelations.

Recently the design of multi-stage gear drive is being highly concerned. Until now, since the researches of gear drive are focused on the design for satisfying safety factor, the reliability evaluation of multi-stage gear drive is not included. In this paper, the life and reliability models of multi-stage gear drive are proposed using methods of probability and statistics. The life and reliability of the multi-stage gear drive have been evaluated, which is based on the life and reliability of each stage gear drive. The pinion and gear lives of each stage are calculated using the Lundberg-Palmgren theory and the Weibull failure distribution. These lives are combined using methods of probability and statistics to produce a life and reliability model of multi-stage gear drive.

The Vibration signals of a gear driving system is often associated with gear tooth faults. Many studies have been done on the detection of impulsive vibration signals, which characterize the breaka ge of a gear tooth. Also, most of the studies on gear fault diagnosis are only about the fault existence at one gear-pair. This study concerns on the several possible faults of a geared motor that has three gear pairs. The measurement and analysis on the vibration signals of a running geared motor shows the relationship between the gear faults and the vibration signals. This study also shows that adaptive interference canceling technique can be appropriately applicable to detect which gear-pair has the fault, and that wavelet is better than spectrogram to figure out the gear fault.

In this paper, dynamic characteristics of an epicyclic gear train considering Coriolis effect have been studied. High speed transmissions such as in an aircraft engines will be strongly influenced by Coriolis effect. Gear meshes were modelled as springs and dampers with periodically varying mechanical constants with time. The loci of planet gear, sun gear. and carrier were analyzed. Maximum values of mesh forces between sun gear and planet gear(S/P) as well as between planet gear and ring gear(P/R) have been simulated as function of rotating speed.
The power train of transmission for 21-ton grade wheel excavator makes use of a complex gear train composed of a planetary and helical gear system to drive the wheel excavator by transmitting power to the axle. The complex gear train with a shift mode is an important part of the transmission because of strength problems in an extreme environment. To calculate the specifications of the complex gear train and analyze the gear bending and compressive stresses of the complex gear train, this study analyzes gear bending and compressive stresses accurately for the optimal design of the complex gear train with respect to cost and reliability. In this article, the gear bending and compressive stresses of the complex gear train are calculated using the Lewes and Hertz equation. Evaluating the results with the data of the allowable bending and compressive stress from the stress and number of cycles curves of the gears verified the calculated specifications of the complex gear train. A computer structure analysis is performed with the 3D model of the planetary and helical gears to analyze the structure strength of the complex gear train. The results demonstrate that the durability and strength of the complex gear train are safe, because the safety factors of the bending and compressive stresses are more than 1.0.

Planetary gearing is a gear system consisting of one or more planet gears, revolving about a sun gear. While the planetary gear system has many advantages- for example, high power density, large reduction in a small volume, multiple kinematic combinations, pure torsional reactions, and coaxial shafting, it has not been widely used because of its high bearing loads, inaccessibility, and design complexity. It is also necessary to shift several pairs of gear profiles at a same time. Therefore, designing profile shifted planetary gear system is a difficult and know-how dependent job. This study provides a practical solution to design a profile shifted gear system by the procedural design scheme, and proposes a bearing integrated structure of the dual stage profile shifted gear system with a robust output end. A dual stage profile shifted gear system with the bearing integrated structure is manufactured by the proposed design scheme in this study. This gear system is verified that it is good enough to commercialize, because it has high performance with high gear ratio and robust output end against axial and radial directional runouts in a small space.

When gears mesh, shock and noise are produced as results of tooth error and tooth deformation under load. Transmission error (TE) is the most important cause of gear noise and vibration because TEs affect the changes of the force and the speed of gears. Gear tooth modification research plays a positive role in reducing TE and improving the design level and transmission performance of transmission systems. In high-precision manufacturing gear, gear tooth modification is also commonly used to reduce noise in practical applications. In order to study the accuracy of gear transmission, some empirical gear profile micro-modifications are introduced, and a helical gear pair is modeled and analyzed in RomaxDesigner software to investigate the utility of these modification methods. Some of these will be selected as experimental proposals for gear pairs, and these manufactured gears will be tested and compared in a semi-anechoic room later. The final purpose of this study is to find reasonable and convenient empirical formulae to facilitate improved gear production.

In recent years the concern of designing multi-stage gear drives increases with the more application of gear drives in high-speed and high-load. until now however research on the gear drive design has been focused on single gear pairs and the design has been depended on experiences and know-how of designers and carried out commonly by trial and error. We propose the automation of the dimensional design of gears and the configuration design for gear arrangement of two-and three-stage cylindrical gear drives. The dimensional design is divided into two types of design processes to determine the dimensions of gears. The first design process(Process I) uses the total volume of gears to determine gear ratio and uses K factor unit load and aspect ratio to determine gear dimensions. The second one(Process II) makes use of Niemann's formula and center distance to calculate gear ratio and dimensions. Process I and II employ material data from AGMA and ISO standards respectively. The configuration design determines the positions of gears to minimize the volume of gearbox by simulated annealing algorithm. Finally the availability of the design algorithm is validated by the design examples of two-and three-stage gear drives.

The WILDHABER-NOVIKOV gear, one of the circular arc gears, has the large contact area between the convex and concave profiled mating teeth, moves from one end of the tooth to the other axially making a face contact. Hence it provides a large load capacity than the Involute gear and still satisfying the law of gearing. In order to analyze the gear stress, a photoelastic investigation was carried out. Photo elastic model of the WILDHABER-NOVIKOV gears were made of Araldite CT200 in this investigation. For both the many teeth gear and the few teeth gear segments, External gears of all addendum type WILDHABER-NOVIKOV gear and the involute gear were tested. Included were the models with various profile raddi at the same pressure angle 20 .deg. and module 13.5. The flank stresses and fillet stresses of these gears were observed in each case and compared with those of gears. From this investigation, the following results were obtained. A. In the case of having many teeth gear: As the profile radius is increased, the fillet stresses of the WILDHABER-NOVIKOV gear become the same or less than that of the INVOLUTE gea, and the flank stress becomes smaller than that of the INVOLUTE gear. Therefore the better design condition is satisfied with a large profile radius. B. IN the case of having a few teeth gear: As the profile radius is increased the flank stress of WILDHABER-NOVIKOV gear becomes smaller than that of the INVOLUTE gear, but the fillet stresses become larger than that of the INVOLUTE gear. Therefore the larger design condition is satisfied with small profile radius.
