This study aimed to investigate the various biological activities of Geranium thunbergii such as antimicrobial activity and protective effect against oxidative damage. To evaluate its antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, we first performed methanol extraction; this methanol extract was further partitioned using various solvents. And then, its antioxidant activity was measured using various assays including total phenolic content and protection against oxidative DNA damage, and antimicrobial activities were examined using minimum inhibiting concentration (MIC) test, and paper disc method. In addition, high-performance liquid chromatography was performed to analyze the major chemical components of ethyl acetate fraction. The G. thunbergii fraction with ethyl acetate exhibited higher antioxidant and antimicrobial activities than the other fractions. The results showed that G. thunbergii ethyl acetate fraction at $50{\mu}g/mL$ had strong DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities of 80.88% and 80.12%, respectively. In addition, the ethyl acetate fraction protected DNA from the oxidative damage induced by ferrous ion and hydroxyl radicals and showed high antimicrobial activity with diameter of inhibition zones ranging from 13.33 to 15.67 mm. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis revealed the major phenolic compounds of G. thunbergii to be ellagic acid and gallic acid. These results suggest that G. thunbergii might protect DNA against oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species and can be utilized as a natural source of antioxidant and antimicrobial agent in the food industry.

This study was performed to investigate the antioxidative activity of solvent (water, 50% ethanol, and 100% ethanol) extracts from five kinds of medicinal herbs Cutellaria baicalensis Georgi; SB, Paeonia lactiflora Pall.; PA, Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge; SM, Phellinus linteus; PH, Morus alba L.; MA). The total content of phenolic compounds was highest in the 50% ethanol extract from PH (280.05 mg/g), the 100% ethanol extract from PH (308.88 mg/g), and the water extract from SM (80.27 mg/g). The total content of flavonoids was highest in the 50% ethanol extract from SB (62.71 mg/ml), the 100% ethanol extract from SB (64.59 mg/ml), and the water extract from SM (35.85 mg/ml). ACE inhibitory activity only occurred in the water extracts, and it was highest in the water extract from SB (45.33%). Cholesterol adsorption activity was higher in the SB and PA extracts than in the other extracts. In water extracts, SM showed the highest antioxidative activity. Among the 50% and 100% ethanol extracts, DPPH radical scavenging activity and FRAP were highest in the PH extract, and ABTS radical scavenging activity was significantly higher in the PA extracts. Seven types of compositions were prepared with different mixing ratios of 0.2 to 2.0 from relatively high-activity medicinal herbs, such as PH, SM and PA. The total phenolic and flavonoid compound contents of the compositions were 50.53-61.96 and 16.91-33.81 mg/ml, respectively. Cholesterol adsorption activity was 46.27-70.03%.

Several extracts of different parts and solvent fractions of Cornus kousa were obtained and their functional material contents, antioxidant activities and tyrosinase inhibition effects were determined. Content of total polyphenols and flavonoids contents in flower were 169.638 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ and 25.418 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively, which were much higher than those of other parts. Also, flower extracts showed the strongest effects on DPPH and ABTS radicals scavenging and ferrous ion chelating. In flower, leaf, and stem extracts, inhibition effects on peroxidation of linoleic acid determined by ferric thiocyanate(FTC) method were higher than a synthetic antioxidant, BHT. Tyrosinase inhibition activities were shown only in flower extract. Flower and leaf extracts, showing high biological activities in various system, were successively reextracted with n-hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate and n-butanol. Total polyphenol contents of water fractions were higher than any other solvent fractions in both flower and leaf, 67.006 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ and 67.739 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively. But total flavonoid contents were higher in ethyl acetate fraction for flower extract and butanol fraction for leaf extract. Among the solvent fractions, the highest efficiency of free radical scavenging activities was obtained in ethyl acetate fraction for flower extract and n-butanol fraction for leaf extract. Tyrosinase inhibition activities were higher in water fraction for both flower and leaf extracts, 49.24% and 31.8%, respectively.
Haw(Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge) belongs to the rose family and has beneficial health effects such as anti-obesity and gastroprotective activities. This study compared the antioxidative activities of various solvent extracts from haw. After removing seeds, pulpy was extracted with 70% methanol, 70% ethanol, chloroform :methanol(CM, 2:1, v/v), n-butanol, and ethyl acetate(EA). Total phenol contents were 71.46, 70.41, 47.63, 47.49 and 45.95 mg/g in the 70% methanol, 70% ethanol, CM, n-butanol and EA extracts, respectively. Total flavonoid contents of CM and n-butanol extracts were higher compared to other extracts at 1.63 mg/g and 1.59 mg/g, respectively, whereas EA extract had the lowest flavonoid content at 1.12 mg/g. Corresponding to total phenol contents, among $NO_2$ radical scavenging activity, antioxidant activity by ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assay, and superoxide dismutase(SOD)-like ability, 70% methanol and 70% ethanol extracts showed higher antioxidative activities than the other extracts. However, the lowest activities were n-butanol extract in $NO_2$ radical scavenging activity as well as EA extract in antioxidant activity by ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assay and SOD-like ability. These results suggest that haw extracts are available as a new natural antioxidant, and its activities are attributed to antioxidant substances such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids.

Baegilju is a famous traditional Korean wine made over the course of 100 days. The physiological functionalities of Baegilju were evaluated using different tests. The spectrophotometric method was used to determine the total concentration of polyphenolics and flavonoids and DPPH and ABTS radicals. A nitrite scavenging assay was used to evaluate antioxidant activity. The fibrin plate method was used for fibrinolysis and to evaluate angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity; finally, the colorimetric determination method was used to evaluate acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity. The total polyphenolic content of non-sterilized Baegilju and sterilized Baegilju were 391.59 ${\mu}g$ and 401.33 ${\mu}g$ tannic acid equivalents/ml, respectively; and the flavonoids contents were 284.75 ${\mu}g$ and 308.35 ${\mu}g$ quercetin equivalents/ml, respectively. Baegilju exhibited more excellent antioxidant activities (DPPH and ABTS radicals, nitrite scavenging activity) than did Cheongju. In addition, the fibrinolytic activity and AChE inhibitory activity were found to be higher in Baegilju than they were in Cheongju. The ACE inhibitory activity of non-sterilized Baegilju, sterilized Baegilju, and Cheongju were 23.62%, 19.99%, and 38.91%, respectively. Therefore, these results suggest that Baegilju has potential as an antioxidant agent and anti-thrombosis agent.
Amelanchier asiatica fruits have been used as a traditional medical food. This research was investigated to assess angiotensin converting enzyme, xanthine oxidase (XOase) and elastase inhibitory activity and antioxidant activities. The content of total phenolic compounds in A. asiatica fruits extracts was 17.6mg/mL. In extracts, the electron donating ability by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging test of A. asiatica fruits extracts was 90.18% at $200{\mu}g/mL$. The 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical decolorization of A. asiatica fruits extracts was 98.81% at $200{\mu}g/mL$. The inhibition rate of the antioxidant protection factor was 1.03, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance was 73.27% at $200{\mu}g/mL$. The XOase inhibition activity of A. asiatica fruits extracts of showed to be 13.19% at $200{\mu}g/mL$. The angiotensin converting enzyme activity was significantly inhibited by A. asiatica fruits extracts as 82.52% inhibitory rate at $200{\mu}g/mL$. Elastase inhibitory activity in the A. asiatica fruits extracts (41.48% at $200{\mu}g/mL$) was higher than vitamin C (12.8% at $200{\mu}g/mL$). These results suggests that A. asiatica fruits extracts have the greatest property as a functional food and functional cosmetic source.

In this study, we investigated the antioxidative activity and inhibitory effects on elastase and tyrosinase of Persicaria hydropiper L. extracts. The free radical (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) scavenging activities ($FSC_{50}$) of ethyl acetate fractions of Persicaria hydropiper L. was $5.23\;{\mu}g/mL$. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activities ($OSC_{50}$) of some Persicaria hydropiper L. extracts on ROS generated in $Fe^{3+}$-EDTA/$H_2O_2$ system were investigated using the luminol - dependent chemiluminescence assay. The ROS scavenging activities ($OSC_{50}$) of ethyl acetate fractions of Persicaria hydropiper L. was $0.40\;{\mu}g/mL$. The protective effects of extract / fractions of Persicaria hydropiper L. on the rose-bengal sensitized photohemolysis of human erythrocytes were investigated. The Persicaria hydropiper L. extracts suppressed photohemolysis in a concentration dependent manner ($1\;{\sim}\;10\;{\mu}g/mL$). Inhibitory effects ($IC_{50}$) on tyrosinase of aglycone fraction of Persicaria hydropiper L. extracts was $8.90\;{\mu}g/mL$. Inhibitory effects ($IC_{50}$) on elastase of aglycone fraction of Persicaria hydropiper L. extracts was $2.37\;{\mu}g/mL$. These results indicate that extract / fractions of Persicaria hydropiper L. can function as antioxidants in biological systems, particularly skin exposed to UV radiation by anti-oxidative activity and protect cellular membranes against ROS. Persicaria hydropiper L. extract / fractions could be used as a new cosmeceutical for whitening and anti-wrinkle products.
Flavonoid compounds show several biological activities and generally exist in the forms of glycones linking sugar moiety to main structure. Flavonoid glycones such as naringin and hesperidin in korean citrus peel are slower absorbed and consequently less active than their aglycone, naringenin and hesperetin, respectively. Therefare to increase the content of flavonoid aglycone in korean citrus peel, we used commercial carbohydrate-hydrolysing enzymes, AMG 300 L, Pectinex 100 L, and Viscozyme for transforming flavonoid glycones to aglycones. Optimal conditions of enzyme reaction were pH 5.0-7.0, $5\%$ enzyme, and 24-48 hrs. The content of naringenin and hesperetin as flavonoid aglycones in untreated citrus peel is $100\~200\;ng/g$ of dried citrus peel. In case of enzyme-treated citrus peel the content of naringenin and hesperetin increased to $1,539\∼6,674\;ng/g\;and\;1,974\∼8,906\;ng/g$ of dried citrus peel, respectively. Finally the content of flavonoid aglycones could be extracted to 10-80 times. Now enzyme-treated citrus peel may be applied to use for functional food because of its higher flavonoid aglycones as more active compounds.
This study investigated the anti-oxidative and anti-cancer activities by extracting of Yacon by fraction with organic solvents. The content of total phenol was the highest by 45.53% in ethyl acetate fraction and the results of electron donating abilities were 65.20% ($100\;{\mu}g/ml$), 91.81% ($500\;{\mu}g/ml$) and 95.06% ($1000\;{\mu}g/ml$) and those of nitrite scavenging abilities were 11.71% ($100\;{\mu}g/ml$), 36.81% ($500\;{\mu}g/ml$), 59.70% ($1000\;{\mu}g/ml$) in ethyl acetate fraction, which were higher concentration than the control group. Xanthine oxidase inhibitory activities were 23.74% ($100\;{\mu}g/ml$) and 43.41% ($500\;{\mu}g/ml$) in low concentration, which showed higher activities than the control group. After measuring the growth inhibitory activities for cancer cells, it has been found that hexane fraction had the highest growth inhibitory activities by 23.75% ($10\;{\mu}g/ml$), 34.67% ($50\;{\mu}g/ml$), 54.21% ($100\;{\mu}g/ml$) for SNU-1. Meanwhile, hexane fraction demonstrated high growth inhibitory activities by 41.38% ($10\;{\mu}g/ml$), 50.53% ($50\;{\mu}g/ml$), 60.91% ($100\;{\mu}g/ml$) and butanol fraction had 17.05% ($10\;{\mu}g/ml$), 43.87% ($50\;{\mu}g/ml$), 62.99% ($100\;{\mu}g/ml$) for HeLa. Therefore, it has been believed that there were peculiar properties of anti-oxidative and anti-cancer activities depending on each fraction. Furthermore, it has been expected that further studies on the development of functional food and concrete components depending on the components of each fraction to be conducted.
