Relation between Beverage Consumption Pattern and Metabolic Syndrome among Healthy Korean Adults (건강한 한국성인의 음료섭취패턴과 대사증후군의 연관성 연구 -2013~2015년 국민건강영양조사를 바탕으로-)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to describe beverage patterns among healthy Korean adults and investigate their association with prevalence and components of metabolic syndrome. Methods: Subjects consisted of 6,927 Korean adults, aged 19-64 years in the $6^{th}$ Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES, 2013-2015). Beverages were regrouped into twelve groups based on food codes and beverage intake (g/day) was assessed by 24-hour recall. Factor analysis was used to obtain beverage patterns. Waist circumference and body mass index (BMI) were used as anthropometric data; fasting blood glucose, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein (HDL), and blood pressure were used as biochemical indicators. The odds ratio (OR) for prevalence of metabolic syndrome and components of metabolic syndrome was assessed using logistic regression analysis. Results: Three beverage patterns were identified using factor analysis: 1) carbonated soft drinks 2) coffee (without added sugar or powdered creamer), and 3) alcoholic beverages. Subjects with high scores for the carbonated soft drink and coffee without added sugar or powdered creamer patterns were younger and subjects with high scores for the alcoholic beverage pattern were older. There were significant differences in gender distribution in all three beverage patterns, with men more likely to have high scores for carbonated soft drink and alcoholic beverage patterns. On the other hand, women were more likely to have higher scores for coffee without added sugar or powdered creamer pattern. Within each pattern, there were significant differences in sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics such as education, household income, frequency of eating out, and smoking status according to the quartile of pattern scores. Alcoholic beverages and carbonated soft drinks patterns were associated with an increased levels of metabolic syndrome components, but coffee without added sugar or powdered creamer was not associated with any of metabolic syndrome components in healthy Korean adults after adjusting for age, sex, education, BMI, weight management, household income, smoking status, frequency of eating out, and energy intake. Conclusions: Alcoholic beverages and carbonated soft drinks patterns are associated with increased levels of metabolic syndrome components while coffee without added sugar or powdered creamer pattern is not associated with any of metabolic syndrome components in healthy Korean adults.

Effects of Planting Densities and Maturing Types on Growth and Yield of Soybean in Paddy Field

  • Field studies were conducted in the southeastern Korea ($36^{\circ}$N) on a commerce silt loam soil at paddy field. Seed were manually planted on 16 July 2003. Plants were planted with plant densities of 70${\times}$10 cm (row width x plant spacing), 50 x 10 cm, and 30 ${\times}$10 cm. Two seedlings per hill were taken prior to V3 stage. Fertilizer was applied prior to plant at a rate of 30-30-34 kg (N-$\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$-$\textrm{K}_2\textrm{O}$) per ha. Experimental design was a randomized complete block in a split plot arrangement with three replications. Yield from different planting densities responded similarly in three soybean cultivars and increased when planting density increased. Somyeongkong showed the highest increasing rate of yield about 26% by 338 g $\textrm{m}^{-2}$ at 30 x l0 cm compared to yield of conventional planting density (70 x 10 cm). Also, the planting density significantly affected pod and seed number and seed weight, but not seed per pod. The tallest plant appeared at 30${\times}$10 cm. The change of leaf area according to days after emergence showed differently in soybean cultivars. The highest and lowest total dry matter production per square meter appeared at 30 x 10 cm and at 70 x 10 cm, respectively. Crop growth rate (CGR) showed greater at R3∼R4 stages compared with V7∼R2 or R2∼R3 growth stages and showed the greatest at 30 x 10 cm in three soybean cultivars. As late planted soybean, there was a significant relation between seed yield and CGR, and leaf area index (LAI) according to planting densities at before and after the flowering stage. Relationship between seed yield and CGR in three planting densities showed a highly significant positive relation ($\textrm{R}^2$=0.757) at R3 to R4 stages, and significant relations ($\textrm{R}^2$=0.505, 0.617) at V7 to R2 and V2 to V3. Also, there was a highly significant positive difference between seed yield and LAI during R3 to R4 and R2 to R3 stages.

Effect of Plum Wine on the Lipid Metabolism and Lipid Peroxidation of Rats (자두와인의 섭취가 흰쥐의 지질대사 및 지질과산화에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of plum wine on lipid metabolism and lipid peroxidation in rats with chronic ethanol consumption was evaluated. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into the following 4 groups; water (NC), alcohol control (AC), low concentration plum wine (LP) and plum wine (P). The alcohol content of experimental drinking water of AC, LP and P were 6%, 6% and 12%, respectively. Animals were fed AIN-76 diet and experimental drinking water for 4 weeks. LP group showed significantly decreased liver weight per 100 g body weight, the levels of total cholesterol and atherogenic index in plasma whereas the ratio of HDL-cholesterol to total cholesterol was significantly increased in comparison to that of AC group. LP and P groups showed significantly decreased total lipid, total cholesterol in liver tissue, AST and ALT activities of plasma as compared with that of AC group. LP and P groups showed a significant decrease in the level of plasma lipid peroxidation products and LP group showed a significant decrease in the level of liver lipid peroxidation products as compared with that of AC group. These results suggest that supplementation of low concentration plum wine may exert more beneficial effects than pure alcohol beverage on lipid metabolism and lipid peroxidation products in chronically alcohol-treated animals by improving lipid profiles in plasma and liver tissues and decreasing plasma and hepatic lipid peroxidation product.

Distributions of proliferative epithelial cells in gastrointestinal tracts by anti-bromodeoxyuridine monoclonal antibody (Anti-bormodeoxyuridine monoclonal antibody를 이용한 랫드 위(胃)와 장(腸)의 분열 상피세포의 분포에 대하여)

  • The purpose of this stady was to investigate division cells by in vivo bromodeoxyuridine(Brdur) immunohistochemistry for labeling the proliferative epithelial cells in the gastrointestinal tracts of rats. Rats were administrated intraperitonially by twice consecutive injections of 24 hr interval with Brdur(0.05mg/g BW/time) and then were sacrificied at 1 hour after last injection. The specimens were taken from the stomach, small intestine(ileum), and large intestine(colon). The well-oriented crypts and villi in the preparations were examined, The crypt columns and villi were devided into 10 segments from crypt base to surface of the lumen or to villis top. Labeling index(LI) was measured by counting the number of Brdur-positive cells against the total number of crypt column cells in the stomach and large intestine and also against the total numbers of crypt column and it's villi epiterial cells in the small intestine. 1. In the stomach, the LI in each part from segment 1 to segment 10 of the crypt column were 4.2%, 5.0%. 6.6%, 9.0%, 11.3%, 15.3%, 9.3%, 15.6%, 11.3%, 0%, respectively and it's mean LI were 8.7%. The Brdur-positive epithelial cells were predominantly located in the middle regions and middle-upper regions of the crypt columns. 2. In the small intestine, the LI in each part from segment 1 to segment 10 of were 62.4%, 50.9%, 27.8%, 22.5%, 18.6%, 12.1%, 7.5%, 4.3%, 2.5%, 1.4%, respectively and it's mean LI were 21.0%. The Brdur-positive epithelial cells were predominantly located in the lower regions of the crypt columns and tended to be less in the higher regions of the villi than that in the crypt column. 3. In the large intestine, the LI in each part from segment 1 to segment 10 of the crypt column were 19.4%, 29.9%, 34.1%, 41.6%, 41.2%, 32.4%, 25.4%, 15.4%, 10.8%, 1.2%, respectively and it's mean LI were 25.1%, The Brdur-positive epithelial cells were predominantly in the middle and middle-lower regions of the crypt columns. 4. The organs with higher LI were ordered as the large intestine(25.1%), small intestine(21.0%) and stomach(8.7%).

Factors Predictive of Voice Therapy Outcome in Patients with Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis (일측성 성대마비 환자에서 음성치료 효과를 예측할 수 있는 인자)

  • Background and Objectives : Unilateral vocal fold paralysis is generally treated using injection laryngoplasty or voice therapy. However, the decision of treatment method is dependent on clinician's preference and hospital facilities without specific criteria. The purpose of the study was to examine factors predictive of voice therapy outcome in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis. Materials and Method : 38 patients diagnosed as unilateral vocal fold paralysis, aged from 24 to 81 years and undergone voice therapy more than 1 month were included. After 3 to 12 (mean 5.1) sessions of voice therapy, subjects had divided into responder group (RG, 28 patients) and non-responder group (NRG, 10 patients) according to G scale change. Paramters of perceptual assessment, acoustic and aerodynamic measure, and videostroboscopy were compared between two groups, and factors predictive of voice therapy result were analyzed. Results : RG patients showed significantly reduced rough, breathy, asthenic voice after voice therapy. Change of MPT and MFR was more substantial in RG than in NRG. By videostroboscopy, RG patients showed significantly more mucosal wave symmetry, glottal closure, reduced glottal gap index during the closed phase of phonation, while NRG patients showed more occurrences of abnomal supraglottic activities during phonation (p < 0.05). Poor outcome of voice therapy significantly associated with increased asthenic scale, short MPT, and less glottal closure (p=0.02). In addition, 90% of patients with MPT more than 5 seconds were in RG, whereas 56% of patients with MPT less than 5 secondes were in RG. Conclusion : Voice therapy is useful for large proportion of patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis as an initial treatment method. However, patients with large asthenia scale, large glottic gap or MPT less than 5 seconds tend to have poor voice therapy outcome, and early injection laryngoplasty maybe recommended for these patients.

Growth Analysis of Silage Corn in Response to Seeding Time (파종기 이동에 따른 Silage 옥수수의 생장해석)

  • The field experiment was conducted to study on the growth analysis of early variety, MTC-1, and late variety, Suweon 19, in response to seeding time at Suweon. The results summarized as follows: 1. Days required for Leaf-Formation(L-phase) of MTC-1 and Suweon 19 was same but that of Node-Thickening(N-phase) was quite different, e.g. late variety has two times longer. The period of Ear-Development (E-phase) in MTC-1 was 41 days and 53 days in Suweon 19. L-and N-phase were shortened by late seeding but E-phase was not influenced by seeding time. 2. Leaf Area Index(LAI) was decreased and Leaf Area Ratio(LAR) was increased by late seeding. Days required to maximum LAR was less by late seeding. Net Assimilation Rate(NAR) of L-, N-, and E-phase was decreased but its tendency in E-phase was remarkable at late seeding. 3. Crop Growth Rate(CGR) was increased gradually in the process of plant growth and it was the highest at Husk-stage. Relative Growth Rate(RGR) was increased in L-phase and was decreased in N- and E-phase, but its tendency in N-phase was great. 4. The period required to the maximum dry matter yield was shortened by late seeding and dry matter yield was increased by early seeding.

Effect of Dietary Fibers on Retinol Binding Protein (RBP, cRBP I, cRBP II) Gene Expression in Rats Fed High Fat Diet (고지방 식이내 식이섬유질이 흰쥐의 레티놀 결합 단백질 (RBP, cRBP I, cRBP II) 유전자 발현에 미치는 영향)

  • Recently it has been reported that vitamin A and retinol binding proteins (RBPs) in blood and urine were changed in the condition of diabetes mellitus or hyperlipidemia. Fruits and vegetables are recommended to consume for the people suffered from these chronic degenerative diseases. The main components of fruits and vegetables are dietary fibers, for example cellulose and pectin, of which function to affect the absorption and excretion of dietary fat and fat-soluble substances. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary fibers on RBPs mRNA expression in liver, small intestine and serum of rat fed high fat diet during 4 weeks. Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing 121g on average, were divided into four groups; (Control; $17\%$ fat & cellulose supplement diet, HF0: $25\%$ fat & fiber free diet, B:.Uc: $25\%$ fat & cellulose supplement diet and HF0: $25\%$ fat & pectin supplement diet) . The rats fed high fat diet groups (HF0, HFC, HFP) tended to consume the food less than the control group, but FER of HF0 groups was significantly higher than the control (p < 0.05) . The weight of adrenal gland in high fat diet groups (HF0, HFC, HFP) was significantly less than the control. Total lipid in feces daily excreted and in liver did not show any significant differences among the groups. Total cholesterol in HFP group was significantly different from that of HFC group. Serum total cholesterol and triglyceride in other group tended to lower than other groups and HDL cholesterol higher. Consequently, AI (atherogenic index) was the lowest in HFP group. Vit A contents in feces daily excreted tended to lower in high fat diet groups (HF0, HFP) compared to the control group. That content in adrenal gland was the lowest in HF0 group, but not in liver. In HFP group were down-regulated cRBPI mRNA in liver and cRBPII mRNA in small intestine and up-regulated RBP and transthyretin expression in serum compared to the other groups. In conclusion, dietary fibers, especially pectin, in high fat diet might down-regulate the expression of CRBP I, CRBP II mRNA in liver and small intestine, but increase the secretion of RBP into serum and therefore inhance the bioavailability of Vit A through the body. Effect of Mutan Isolated from Streptococcus mutans on the Healing of Bone Defect in Rat (Streptococcus mutans로부터 분리한 Mutan이 흰쥐의 골결손부 치유에 미치는 영향)

  • We investigated the effects of a mutan (water-insoluble ${\alpha}$-glucans) isolated from Streptococcus mutans on the healing of bone defect in rat. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into control (saline-treated), lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated, and mutan-treated groups (n=6 per group). Experimental bone defects were surgically created with round fissure bur at the buccal surface of the left mandibular. The control groups was administered with saline solution (0.1 ml/100 g), while the LPS and mutan group was given LPS and mutan (1 mg/kg body weight) three times weekly. After 4 weeks the rats were sacrificed, the healing of bone defect was assessed by bone mineral density (BMD) and micro-computed tomography (${\mu}CT$) examination. Percent bone volume (bone volume/tissue volume [BV/TV]), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), and trabecular number (Tb.N) parameters of ${\mu}CT$ showed higher values in control group than LPS and mutan group. Bone surface/volume ratio (BS/BV), trabecular bone pattern factor (Tb.Pf), and structure model index parameters of ${\mu}CT$ showed higher values in LPS group than mutan group. BMD values of mutan treated-alveolar bones were significantly lower for than that of the LPS group. Therefore, we suggest that mutan, water-insoluble ${\alpha}$-glucans from S. mutans may be induce the induction of periodontal diseases.

Fatty liver associated with metabolic derangement in patients with chronic kidney disease: A controlled attenuation parameter study

  • Background: Hepatic steatosis measured with controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) using transient elastography predicts metabolic syndrome in the general population. We investigated whether CAP predicted metabolic syndrome in chronic kidney disease patients. Methods: CAP was measured with transient elastography in 465 predialysis chronic kidney disease patients (mean age, 57.5 years). Results: The median CAP value was 239 (202-274) dB/m. In 195 (41.9%) patients with metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus was more prevalent (105 [53.8%] vs. 71 [26.3%], P < 0.001), with significantly increased urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (184 [38-706] vs. 56 [16-408] mg/g Cr, P = 0.003), high sensitivity C-reactive protein levels (5.4 [1.4-28.2] vs. 1.7 [0.6-9.9] mg/L, P < 0.001), and CAP (248 [210-302] vs. 226 [196-259] dB/m, P < 0.001). In multiple linear regression analysis, CAP was independently related to body mass index (${\beta}=0.742$, P < 0.001), triglyceride levels (${\beta}=2.034$, P < 0.001), estimated glomerular filtration rate (${\beta}=0.316$, P = 0.001), serum albumin (${\beta}=1.386$, P < 0.001), alanine aminotransferase (${\beta}=0.064$, P = 0.029), and total bilirubin (${\beta}=-0.881$, P = 0.009). In multiple logistic regression analysis, increased CAP was independently associated with increased metabolic syndrome risk (per 10 dB/m increase; odds ratio, 1.093; 95% confidence interval, 1.009-1.183; P = 0.029) even after adjusting for multiple confounding factors. Conclusion: Increased CAP measured with transient elastography significantly correlated with and could predict increased metabolic syndrome risk in chronic kidney disease patients.

Model Verification of Decision Assisting Nitrogen Expert System NES to Illinois Cornfields (일리노이주의 옥수수 포장에서 질소질 비료의 적정시용에 대한 전문가체계의 검증)

  • To verify the newly developed decision assisting expert system for nitrogen fertilizer application NES to Illinois cornfields, a couple of N rate studies from Dr. Howard and five Illinois Agricultural Experiment Stations were applied. Four types of recommendations including the current Illinois recommendation, Hoeft recommendation, NES, and maximum economic recommendation were compared with each other for the crop yields, profits, recovery rate, and N losses to cornfields. The N rate of NES recommendation, considering productivity index (PI), soil organic matter content (SOM), and pre-sidedressing nitrate concentration (PSNT) level, was the lowest in comparison to those of other recommendations. However, N recovery rate in NES was generally higher and the resulting N loss was lower than others. But, adherence to the recommendations may also reduce farmers income if environmental expense did not considered. Therefore, NES will be more effective by adding the factors including environmental expense, tillage systems, crop rotation, and other agricultural management parameters.
