The dominant species of the sand vegetation in the western coast of Korea were Carex pumila, Ischaemum antheporoides, Calystegia soldanella, Carex kobomugi and Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii. The salt content of the sand dune soil and of the atmosphere of surveyed areas ranged from 3.93 to 13.86 mg% and from 25.81 to 168.86mg% respectively. Between the salt content of the atmosphere and that of the soil positive relationship was found. Species density and Simpson's index increased with the distance from the coast, the former was exponential, however, the latter was linear. The composition of biological types in the investigated stands were H-D4-R1-3-e or H-D4-R1-3-t. Relative numbers of psammophytes and rhizome psammophytes decreased with the distance from the coast, but those of other plants increased. The standing crop of the sand dune vegetation ranged from 0.04 to 491.64g/m2 and the average 27.77g/m2. This was varied as the stands and showed a linear increment as the distance from the coast was increased. The salt content of atmosphere significantly affected the density, T/R ratio in the standing crop and Simpson's index. The salt content of soil showed similar tendency on the density and the T/R ratio.
This study was to evaluate the effects of oral administration of Processed Sulphur on Hepatotoxicity. Processed Sulphur was administered orally to rats for 28 days. We measured the body and liver weight index, heamtological and biomedical parameters. We also observed the histopathological changes of liver in rats. No significant differences in body weight, liver weight index, heamtological and biomedical parameters and histopathological changes of hepatocyte between control and Processed Sulphur fed group were found. Our data indicate that hepatotoxicity was not caused by oral medication of Processed Sulphur up to 60mg/200g/day for 28 days in rats. Therefore, Processed Sulphur appears to be safe and non-toxic in these studies and a no-observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) in rats is established at 60mg/200g/day. The data could provide satisfactory preclinical evidence of safety to launch clinical trial on standardized formulation of mineral extracts.

Trapezoidal Cemented Sand and Gravel Dam, namely Trapezoid CSG, is a new type of dam. Due to lack of dynamic studies in the field of CSG dam, this research was performed to analyze Trapezoidal CSG dam using dynamic Finite element method with ABAQUS Software. To investigate possible earthquake-induced damages, fragility curves are plotted based on damage index, the length of the cracks created at the dam base and the area of cracked elements in the dam. The seismic analysis indicated that minimum and maximum tensions are generated in the heel and toe of the dam, respectively. According to the fragility curves, with increase in PGA, the possibility of the exceeding the defined limit state is increased. However, the rate of increment is significantly reduced after PGA=0.4 g. Also, the same result is achieved for the second limit state. The "area of cracked elements" is more conservative criterion than the "crack length at the dam base", especially at PGA<0.4 g. As conclusion, CSG dams, despite of being made of poor materials in comparison with concrete dams, show good resistance, and even in some situations, better performance than the weighted concrete dams.
Objectives The present study was carried out to investigate effects of HBPDS on allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) induced by 2,4-Dinitro-1-fluorobenzene (DNFB) in mice. Methods In this experiment, effects of HBPDS on body weights, skin thicknesses, skin weights, histopathological changes, clinical aspects, erythema index, melanin index, production levels of cytokines in ACD mice were investigated. In addition, effects on proliferation rates, release of ${\beta}$-hexosaminidase and histamine were also investigated in vitro. Results & Conclusions 1) HBPDS inhibited enlargement of skin thickness and weight significantly (P < 0.05). 2) HBPDS treatment prevented spongiosis, edema and immune cell infiltrations. 3) Erythema, desquamation and keratosis were diminished by oral administration of HBPDS. 4) Production levels of TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma in serum were decreased by HBPDS treatment in vivo. 5) More than 200 ${\mu}g/ml$ of HBPDS treatment decreased ${\beta}$-hexosaminidase release and more than 400 ${\mu}g/ml$ of HBPDS treatment also decreased histamine release in vitro.
Objective: Insomnia is a very common symptom of cancer and has a substantial effect on the patients' quality of life. This study aimed to identify the effects of foot reflexology on insomnia in cancer patients. Methods: The study employed a before-after test design on a single group of 13 cancer patients with insomnia, selected by convenience sampling in Daegu. The foot reflexology treatment comprised 30-min sessions twice a week over four weeks. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) were measured at the baseline, at 2 and 4 weeks, and after 4 weeks post treatment completion. Brief Fatigue Inventory-Korean (BFI-K), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G), and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) were measured at baseline, post-treatment, and 4 weeks after completing treatments. Results: Thirteen patients (mean age 44.77 ± 6.70 years), with thyroid, breast or cervical cancer, were included in the study. Post-treatment, PSQI (from 12.33 ± 3.17 to 8.54 ± 3.43, p<0.001), ISI (from 20.33 ± 3.88 to 13.38 ± 4.23, p<0.001), FACT-G (from 49.6 ± 13.27 to 61.35 ± 14.45, p<0.001), and BFI (from 6.46 ± 0.91 to 5.00 ± 2.02, p<0.001) scores improved significantly over those at the baseline. Conclusion: Foot reflexology can be a good alternative treatment to improve insomnia, fatigue, and quality of life in cancer patients
Objective: Insomnia is a very common symptom and has a great effect on the quality of life in cancer patients. This study was conducted to identify the effects of the aroma therapy on insomnia in cancer patients. Methods: The study was performed with one group in before-after test design. The subjects were 15 cancer patients with insomnia selected by convenience sampling in Daegu. The aroma therapy consists of 10-minute sessions twice a week over 6 weeks. The PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), ISI (Insomnia Severity Index) were measured at baseline and at 3 and 6 weeks, after 6 weeks after finishing treatment. STAI (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory), FACT-G (Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy-General), HRV (Heart Rate Variability) were measured at baseline, post-treatment and after 6 weeks after finishing treatments. Results: Fifteen patients (mean age 50.93 ± 7.29 years), with breast, ovarian or gastric cancer, participated this study. At post-treatment, PSQI (from 14.18 ± 2.64 to 6.18 ± 3.03), ISI (from 19.00 ± 3.19 to 8.18 ± 5.14), FACT-G (from 55.65 ± 11.20 to 66.91 ± 12.33), and STAI (from 40.36 ± 8.10 to 34.73 ± 9.81, from 45.64 ± 6.07 to 39.73 ± 9.37) scores improved significantly over baseline(p<0.001). Conclusion: Aroma therapy improved insomnia, anxiety and quality of life on cancer patients.
Cytogenetic effects of malathion and parathion, the organophosphorus pesticides were studied on goat lymphocytes in culture. The mitotic indices (% of blast cells + cells at metaphase) of goat lymphocytes showed corresponding decrease with the increase in dose of pesticides. Malathion had significant effect only at $150{\mu}g/ml$ or higher dosages while, parathion caused antimitotic effects even at the lowest dose ($5{\mu}g/ml$) tested. The clastogenic effects of malathion were significant ($p{\leq}0.05$) at $100{\mu}g/ml$. In higher doses, the effects were highly significant ($p{\leq}0.01$). The frequency of metaphase plates with chromosomal abnormalities were highest (22.0%) at $200{\mu}g/ml$. The incidences of chromosomal abnormalities were significant ($p{\leq}0.05$) in parathion treated series even at $5{\mu}g/ml$ dose level. At $10{\mu}g/ml$ or higher dose levels the difference between treatment groups and controls were more pronounced ($p{\leq}0.01$). Various types of chromosomal abnormalities were encountered in goat lymphocytes treated by malathion and parathion. However, the incidence of gaps, breaks, acentric fragments, dicentric chromosomes were higher than other types of structural and numerical abnormalities.
Rheological properties of acorn flour-guar gum mixtures (4% w/w) at different guar gum concentrations (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8% w/w) were evaluated in steady and dynamic shear. The acorn flour-guar gum mixtures at $25^{\circ}C$ showed high shear-thinning flow behavior (n= 0.20-0.27). Consistency index (K), apparent viscosity (${\eta}_{a,100}$), and Casson yield stress (${\sigma}_{oc}$) increased with the increase in guar gum concentration. Within the temperature range of $25-70^{\circ}C$, the {\eta}_{a,100}$ of mixtures obeyed the Arrhenius relationship with high determination coefficient ($R^2=\;0.974-0.994$). Activation energy values (5.37-6.77 kJ/mole) of acorn flour dispersions in the mixtures with guar gum (0.2-0.8%) were much lower than that (12.5 kJ/mole) of acorn flour dispersion (0% guar gum). Storage modulus (G'), loss modulus (G"), and complex viscosity (${\eta}^*$) increased with the increase in guar gum concentration. Dynamic rheological data of 1n (G', G") versus ln frequency (w) of guar gum-acorn flour mixtures had positive slopes with G' greater than G" over most of the frequency range, indicating that they exhibited weak gel-like behavior.
