  • Feasibility of the small capacity fuel cell powered vehicle is carried out for system design with loading characteristics. The major design concepts which include battery, driving motor, and fuel cell module are analyzed and discussed for the future development. A load characteristics program is developed in order to calculate the traction power of fuel cell vehicle according to the driving courses specified. Further, the small capacity fuel cell vehicle is analyzed to determine the capacity of stack as a function of the velocity for an appropriate power required.

  • Ethanol has properties of a lower setting point, higher oxygen contents, lower cetane numbers, and also higher volatility compared to biodiesel. Thus, biodiesel fuel can be improved in the fluidity of blending fuel and exhaust emissions by blended ethanol fuel. This research aims to understand combustion characteristics of biodiesel-ethanol blending fuel inside a constant volume chamber. High speed camera was applied to visualize the physics of development of combustion processes, and combustion pressure and exhaust emissions were measured at several blending ratios of ethanol and biodiesel fuel. This information may contribute to improve the performance of biodiesel engine and reduce emissions in future.

  • This article is about using the fuel mixed with 10% and 20% bio-ethanol to gasoline for the engine as a way to reduce carbon emission before commercializing future automobiles like fuel cell cars. The fuel mixed with 10% and 20% bio-ethanol showed output equivalent to that of the previous gasoline fuel. CO and $CO_2$ emission was somewhat reduced, but the difference was not significant. And the consumption of the fuel increased slightly. However, bio-ethanol is produced from bio mass growing with the absorption of carbon dioxide, so the total amount of carbon dioxide did not increase according to the result. In NOx, as the use of ethanol increases, the effect of reduction gets greater, and the emission of oxygen showed almost no change compared with gasoline.

  • The research and development for the solid oxide fuel cell have been promoted rapidly and extensively in recent years, because of their high efficiency and future potential. Therefore this paper describes the manufacturing method and characteristics of anode electrode for solid oxide fuel cell, by the way, Ni-YSZ materials are used as anode of solid oxide fuel cell widely. In order to reduce production costs, we have fabricated single solid oxide fuel cell by doctor blade and screen printing method. Disk-type planar solid oxide fuel cell with an effective electrode area of about $7cm^2$ were fabricated and run for 500 h to investigate cell performance. The current density at a voltage of 0.7 V was $850mA/cm^2$.

  • Ion current in an S.I engine cylinder is measured with the spark plug as a probe. The peak values are confirmed to show a fair correlation with local air-fuel ration and engine speed which implies that the ion current measured at the spark plug may provide a signal for the local mixture strength which is the key parameter in precise fuel control for future engines especially of gasoline direct-injected lean burn engines.

  • Fuel cells are expected to be promising future power sources in both aspects of thermal efficiency and environmental friendliness. Accordingly, worldwide research and development efforts have been enormously increasing recently in various applications such as power plants, transportation and portable power sources. Among others, high temperature fuel cells, such as solid oxide fuel cells and molten carbonate fuel cells, are suitable for electric power plants. Moreover, their high operating temperature is quite appropriate to construct further advanced integrated systems. This paper reviews recent literatures on research and development of integrated power generation systems based on high temperature fuel cells. Research and development efforts are summarized in the area of fuel cell/ gas turbine hybrid systems, application of carbon capture technology to fuel cell systems, integration of coal gasification with fuel cells, and the use of alternative fuels.

  • In this study, the natural frequency analysis of the fuel pipe and vibration test jig was performed as a basic study to determine the vibration characteristics of the vehicle's fuel pipe and the stability analysis of fatigue failure of the pipe. The natural frequencies of the fuel pipe and the fuel pipe with the test jig were calculated and the results were compared. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the natural frequency of the fuel pipe and the natural frequency of the test jig differed about 7 times, so that the vibration of the test jig did not affect the vibration of the fuel pipe. In addition, as a result of the natural frequency analysis of the fuel pipe itself and the pipe with the test jig attached, the maximum error is less than about 1%. In the future, it was suggested that the analysis of the design changed fuel pipe may be performed without a test jig.

  • In this paper are reviewed the current status of nuclear fuel management and reactor operational aid tools. In addition, we indicate deficiencies in current capabilities and what future research is judged warranted. For the nuclear fuel management review the focus is on light water reactors and the utilization of stochastic optimization methods applied to the lattice, fuel bundle, core loading pattern, and for BWRs the control rod pattern/core flow design decision making problems. Significant progress in addressing separately each of these design problems on a single cycle basis is noted; however, the outstanding challenge of addressing the integrated design problem over multiple cycles under conditions of uncertainty remains to be addressed. For the reactor operational aid tools review the focus is on core simulators, used to both process core instrumentation signals and as an operator aid to predict future core behaviors under various operational strategies. After briefly reviewing the current status of capabilities, a more in depth review of adaptive core simulation capabilities, where core simulator input data are adjusted within their known uncertainties to improved agreement between prediction and measurement, is presented. This is done in support of the belief that further development of adaptive core simulation capabilities is required to further significantly advance the utility of core simulators in support of reactor operational aid tools.

  • Hydrogen isotopes (i.e. deuterium and tritium) are supplied to the tokamak in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) fuel cycle. One important part of the ITER fuel cycle is the recycling of unused fuel back to the tokamak, as almost 99 % of fuel is unburned during fusion reaction. For this, cryogenic distillation has been used in the isotope separation system (ISS) of ITER, but this technique tends to be energy-intensive and to have low selectivity (typically below 1.5 at 24 K). Recently, efficient isotope separation by porous materials has been reported in the so-called quantum sieving process. Hence, in this study, hydrogen isotope adsorption behavior is studied using chemically stable ZIF-11. At low temperature (40 K ~ 70 K), the adsorption increases and the sorption hysteresis becomes stronger as the temperature increases to 70K. Molar ratio of deuterium to hydrogen based on the isotherms shows the highest (max. 14) ratio at 50 K, confirming the possibility of use as a potential isotope separation material.

  • As one of the Gen-IV nuclear energy systems, a sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) is being developed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. As a long-term national research project, advanced radiation resistant oxide dispersion strengthened steel (ARROS) is being developed as an in-core fuel cladding tube material for a SFR in the future. In this paper, the current status of ARROS development is reviewed and its future prospective is discussed.
