Effect of Alkaline-Earth Oxide Additives on Flexural Strength of Clay-Based Membrane Supports

  • Low-cost ceramic membrane supports with pore sizes in the range of $0.52-0.62{\mu}m$ were successfully prepared by uniaxial dry compaction method using inexpensive raw materials including kaolin, bentonite, talc, sodium borate, and alkaline-earth oxides in carbonate forms (e.g., $MgCO_3$, $CaCO_3$, and $SrCO_3$). The prepared green supports were sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 8 hr in air. The effect of alkaline-earth oxide additives on the flexural strength of clay-based membrane supports was investigated. The porosity of the clay-based membrane supports was found to be in the range of 33-34%. The flexural strength of the clay-based membrane supports with 1% alkaline-earth carbonates was found to be in the range of 42.8-52.7 MPa. The addition of alkaline-earth carbonates to clay-based membrane supports resulted in large increases (47-80%) in the flexural strength of the membrane supports, compared to that of membrane supports without alkaline-earth carbonates. The typical flexural strength of the clay-based membrane support with 1% $SrCO_3$ was 52.7 MPa at 33.8% porosity.

다양한 원료 곡물로 제조한 막걸리의 항산화활성 및 품질특성 (Antioxidant Activity and Quality Properties of Makgeolli Brewed with Various Raw Material Cereals)

  • 본 연구에서는 고부가가치 막걸리 개발을 위해 4가지 원료 곡물(밀가루, 팽화미분, 멥쌀, 및 찹쌀)로 한국 전통막걸리를 제조하였다. 기능성소재로의 개발 가능성 조사를 위해 제조한 막걸리를 대상으로 이화학적 성상, 페놀, 플라보노이드, 및 비타민 함량, 그리고 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)(ABTS) 라디칼 소거활성을 측정하였다. 팽화미분 막걸리와 멥쌀 막걸리가 4종류의 막걸리 중 알코올 함량이 높은 것으로 나타났다(16-16.5%). 4종류의 막걸리 중 팽화미분 막걸리의 총 페놀 함량이 5.2±0.06 mg GAE/mL로 가장 높았으며, 플라보노이드 함량은 4종류의 막걸리가 470-490 ㎍ QE/mL 수준으로 유사하게 높았다. 총 페놀 함량이 가장 높았던 팽화미분 막걸리가 81.5%로 ABTS 라디칼 소거활성이 가장 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 결과는 팽화미분이 항산화 기능성소재 개발을 위한 효율적인 막걸리 원료가 될 수 있음을 시사한다.

갈색 느티만가닥버섯 추출물의 부위별 항산화 활성 (Antioxidant activities of brown beech mushroom (Hypsizygus marmoreus) pileus and stipe)

  • 본 연구에서는 기능성 식의약품 소재로써 갈색 느티만가닥버섯(Hypsizygus marmoreus)의 이용 가능성을 조사하기 위해 갈색 느티만가닥버섯의 부위별, 추출 용매별 항산화 활성을 조사하였다. 열수 추출물 갓과 대의 총 폴리페놀 함량은 17.15±0.19 mg GAE/g과 7.37±0.16 mg GAE/g이었으며 에탄올 추출물 갓과 대의 총 폴리페놀 함량은 각각 10.23±0.14 mg GAE/g과 3.76.±0.19 mg GAE/g으로 에탄올 추출물에 비해 열수 추출물의 폴리페놀 함량이 높게 나타났고 대에 비해 갓의 폴리페놀 함량이 높게 나타났다. 또한 갈색 느티만가닥버섯 추출물의 DPPH, ABTS, ORAC 지수, 환원력도 10 mg/ml의 농도에서 에탄올 추출물에 비해 열수 추출물에서 높게 나타났고 대에 비해 갓에서 높게 나타났으며 흰색 느티만가닥버섯에 비해 갈색 느티만가닥버섯의 총 폴리페놀 함량, DPPH, ORAC 지수, 환원력이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 추출물의 세포독성은 WST-1 assay (4-[3-(4-iodophenyl)-2-(4-nitrophenyl)-2H-5-tetrazolio]-1,3-benzene disulphonate)를 이용하여 열수 추출물의 처리 농도에 따른 대식세포주 RAW 264.7의 세포 생존율로 확인하였으며 갈색 느티만가닥버섯 열수 추출물 처리구에서 대식세포주 RAW 264.7의 세포 생존율이 증가하였기 때문에 세포독성은 없는 것으로 판단된다. 이상의 결과를 종합하면, 느티만가닥버섯은 품종에 따라 항산화 활성에 차이가 있고, 갈색 느티만가닥버섯은 다른 버섯보다 항산화 활성이 높기 때문에 기능성 식의약품 소재로서 이용 가능성이 있다고 판단된다.

싸리나무 줄기 추출물의 추출 용매에 따른 항산화활성과 Nitric Oxide 생성 억제 활성 (Antioxidative and Nitric Oxide Production Inhibitory Activities of Lespedeza bicolor Stem Extracts Depending on Solvents)

  • In this study, we investigated on antioxidative activity and nitric oxide production inhibitory activity of various solvent extracts of Lespedeza bicolor. The total polyphenol content of the methanol extract was 192.6 mg/g and flavonoid content of the acetone extract was 40.6 mg/g, as the highest content. In DPPH radical scavenging ability, $SC_{50}$ values of the ethanol and methanol extract were exhibited $0.69mg/m{\ell}$ and $0.89mg/m{\ell}$, respectively. However, in nitric oxide(NO) scavenging ability, $SC_{50}$ values of the acetone was exhibited $0.72mg/m{\ell}$ as the highest activity. Moreover, the acetone extract showed strong NO production inhibitory effect in lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-stimulated Raw 264.7 cell. In the cytotoxicity measurement by MTT assay, the extracts were exhibited Raw 264.7 cell viabilities of 92.57~129.04% as nontoxic result in concentration of $65{\sim}650{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. As a result, the acetone extract of L. bicolor could be applicable to functional materials for anti-inflammatory related fields.

  • We report $EU^{2+}$ activated green phosphor $Ba_{2}CaMgSi_{2}O_{8}:Eu^{2+}$. The phosphor absorbs ultroviolet radation and emits a green visible light. The phosphors were synthesized by conventional solid state reaction method. The high purity $BaCO_3$, $CaCO_3$, MgO, $SiO_2$, $Eu_{2}O_{3}$ were used as raw materials. The raw materials were mixed thoroughly with an appropriate amount of ethanol in an agate mortar and then dried at $90^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The mixture was sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours and reheated at the mild reducing atmosphere 5% $H_2$ gas mixed with 95% $N_2$ gas at about $900^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The photoluminescence spectra of the phosphor powders were measured by a fluorescent spectrophotometer. The crystal structure of phosphor powders were investigated by X -ray diffractometer.

건강기능식품 중 주요 식물성 원료에 대한 미생물학적 위해 분석과 알로에 제품에 대한 방사선 조사 가능성 검지 (Microbiological Hazard Analysis of Botanical Raw Materials used for Functional Health Foods and Preliminary Screening for Irradiation of Aloe Powder Products)

  • 건강기능식품은 인체에 유용한 기능성을 가진 원료나 성분을 사용하여 정제, 캅셀, 분말, 과립, 액상, 환등의 형태로 제조 가공한 식품을 말한다. 2004년 '건강기능식품에 관한 법률‘이 제정되었지만 아직은 시작단계이며 소비자의 피해나 섭취 후 부작용에 대한 문제도 많이 발생하고 있다. 건강기능식품 중 비교적 높은 부작용 발생 빈도를 보이는 건강기능식품의 주원료인 식물성 원료 14종 37개 품목과 알로에분말 제품 4개 품목을 대상으로 미생물 분석을 하였으며, PSL을 이용하여 알로에분말 제품의 방사선조사 가능성 여부를 알아보았다. 식물성 원료 총 14종 37개 품목에서 세균수는 $10^{3}-10^{6}\;CFU/g$ 검출되었으며, 대장균군은 검출한계(<10 CFU/g)에서 31개 품목에서 $10^{2}-10^{5}\;CFU/g$ 검출되었다. 식중독균은 E. coli와 Salmonella spp., Staph. aureus는 검출되지 않았으며, B. cereus는 8종 12개 품목에서 검출되었다. 알로에 분말제품 4개 품목 중 1개 품목에서만 세균수 $10^{4}\;CFU/g$, 대장균군수는 $10^{3}\;CFU/g$ 검출되었고, 식중독균은 검출되지 않았다. PSL을 이용하여 알로에 분말제품의 방사선조사 가능성을 monitoring한 결과, 알로에 분말제품은 4개 품목 중 positive 2개 품목, negative 1개 품목, intermediate 1개 품목이었다.

Effects of Wax Gourd Extracts on Adipocyte Differentiation and Uncoupling Protein Genes(Ucps) Expression in 3T3-Ll Preadipocytes

  • Although various raw plant materials have been demonstrated to exert anti-obesity effects to a greater or lesser extent in both humans and animals when they are used to supplement the diet, it has not been shown extensively that they influence adipocyte cell differentiation involving lipid metabolic gene expressions. Using a well-established 3T3-L1 preadipocyte differentiation system, we decided to look into molecular and cellular event occurring during adipocyte differentiation when raw plant materials aye included in the process, in an effort to demonstrate the potential use of a screening system to define the functions of traditionally well-known materials. To these ends, the effects of ethanol (EtOH) or EtOH/distilled water (DW) extracts of Wax Gourd were examined using cytochemical and molecular analyses to determine whether components of the extracts modulate adipocyte differentiation of 3T3-Ll preadipocytes in vitro. The cytochemical results demonstrated that EtOH or EtOH/DW extracts did not affect lipid accumulation and cell proliferation, although the degree of lipid accumulation was influenced slightly depending on the extract. EtOH extract was highly effective in apoptotic induction during differentiation of 3T3-Ll preadipocytes (p<0.05). Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis of lipoprotein lipase (LPL), Uncoupling protein (Ucp) 2, 3 and 4 also showed that while LPL expression was not influenced, Ucp2, 3 and 4 were up regulated in the EtOH extract-treated group and down regulated in the EtOH/DW extract-treated group. These changes in gene expressions suggest that the components in different fractions of Wax Gourd extracts may modulate lipid metabolism by either direct or indirect action. Taking these results together, it was concluded that molecular and cellular analyses of adipocyte differentiation involving lipid metabolic genes should facilitate understanding of cellular events occurring during adipocyte differentiation. Furthermore, the experimental scheme and analytical methods used in this study should provide a screening system for the functional study of raw plant materials in obesity research.

  • The purpose of this study is to show probability of alternate food by using edible insects through the reports (Edible insects: Future prospects for food and feed security) edited by WFO (World Food Organization). We were carried out to develop the functional meat new product using Mealworm (Tenebrio molitor lavare) and Chicken breast. People's interest to the healthy, low-calories food is growing up, the Foodservice industry is developing and making Functional food, which helps to a sale strategy. Insects have played an important role as human food throughout history, especially in Africa, Asia and Latin America. A rapid increase in the human population is expected in the second half of the 21 century, which will lead to lower availability of food, especially animal protein As the problem of food supply and demand has come to the fore with climate change, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has noticed edible insects as future food resources in order to prepare against the shortage of protein source. Recently consumers, especially patients have doubts about safety of raw materials for food. To overcome these limitations, I propose an enteral nutrition formula using edible insects as a raw material.

Physicochemical and Functional Properties of Yeast-Fermented Cabbage

  • Microbial fermentation is often used to improve the functionality of plant-based food materials. Herein, we investigated changes in the physicochemical and functional properties of cabbage during yeast fermentation to develop new products using fermented cabbage. Among the 8 types of food-grade yeast, both Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces boulardii fermented 10% cabbage powder solution (w/w) the most effectively, leaving no soluble sugars after 12 h of fermentation. In addition, the yeast fermentation of cabbage resulted in functionally positive outcomes in terms of sulforaphane content, antioxidant properties, and anti-inflammatory activity. Specifically, the yeast-fermented cabbages contained about 500% more sulforaphane. The soluble fraction (5 ㎍/ml) of yeast-fermented cabbage had no cytotoxicity in murine RAW 264.7 cells, and the radical-scavenging capacity was equivalent to 1 ㎍/ml of ascorbic acid. Moreover, cabbage fermented with S. boulardii significantly suppressed both lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-induced nitric oxide production and LPS-induced reactive oxygen species production in RAW 264.7 cells, suggesting a potential anti-inflammatory effect. These results support the idea that yeast fermentation is promising for developing functionally improved cabbage products.

Comparision of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of enzyme assisted hydrolysate from Ecklonia maxima blades and stipe

  • Marine brown seaweeds are a source of functional ingredients with various biological properties. They have been used in the food and functional food industries. Brown seaweeds are divided into three parts of blades, stipe, and root. Normally seaweed blades were used as raw materials for biological research. However, there are limited uses on stipes of Ecklonia maxima (E. maxima) depending on the physicochemical, nutritional, and biological properties. Besides, the comparative studies of two structures of E. maxima, blades and stipe didn't discover previously. This study aimed to compare the potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of the two structures of E. maxima, blades and stipe in vitro studies to increase the utilization of the two structures of E. maxima. The enzyme-assisted hydrolysate from E. maxima showed significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Among them, celluclast-assisted hydrolysate from E. maxima blades (EMBC) and viscozyme-assisted hydrolysate from E. maxima stipe (EMSV) expressed significant protection on hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress. Moreover, EMBC and EMSV treatment remarkably reduced nitric oxide production by downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine expressions in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated Raw 264.7 cells. Especially EMBC showed strong inhibition on pro-inflammatory cytokine production compared to EMSV. Taken together research findings suggest that EMBC and EMSV possessed potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may be utilized as functional ingredients in the food and functional food sectors.
