  • To study the effect of functional water on the compressive strength of mortar, city water was changed to functional water through ceramics treatment. The change of characteristics of water was measured with $O^{17}$ NMR and Killian Camera. The compressive strength of mortar was measured with various curing conditions. The test results show that by the ceramics treatment the characteristics of city water was changed. At 28 days under curing condition, the compressive strength of mortar which was mix-proportioned with treated water was increased about 22 % than that of mortar which was mix-proportioned with untreated city water.

  • Our previous studies showed that the relaxation defect of diabetic heart was due to the changes in the expressional levels of SR $Ca^{2+}$-ATPase and PLB. In the diabetic heart contractile abnormalities were also observed, and one of the mechanisms for these changes could include alterations in the expression and/or activity levels of various $Ca^{2+}$ regulatory proteins involving cardiac contraction.(omitted)

  • KUGI (Korean UniGene Information) database contains the annotation information of the cDNA sequences obtained from the disease samples prevalent in Korean. A total of about 157,000 5'-EST high throughput sequences collected from cDNA libraries of stomach, liver, and some cancer tissues or established cell lines from Korean patients were clustered to about 35,000 contigs. From each cluster a representative clone having the longest high quality sequence or the start codon was selected. We stored the sequences of the representative clones and the clustered contigs in the KUGI database together with their information analyzed by running Blast against RefSeq, human mRNA, and UniGene databases from NCBI. We provide a web-based search engine fur the KUGI database using two types of user interfaces: attribute-based search and similarity search of the sequences. For attribute-based search, we use DBMS technology while we use BLAST that supports various similarity search options. The search system allows not only multiple queries, but also various query types. The results are as follows: 1) information of clones and libraries, 2) accession keys, location on genome, gene ontology, and pathways to public databases, 3) links to external programs, and 4) sequence information of contig and 5'-end of clones. We believe that the KUGI database and search system may provide very useful information that can be used in the study for elucidating the causes of the disease that are prevalent in Korean.

  • NiO buffer layers were deposited on texture Ni tapes fur YBCO coated conductors by MOCVD(metal organic chemical vapor deposition) method, using a single solution source. Variables were deposition temperature and flow rate of $0_2$carrier gas. At higher temperatures, The NiO(111) texture was well developed, but the NiO(200) texture was developed at low temperatures. The best result was obtained at the deposition temperature of$ 470^{\circ}C$ and the gas flow rate of 200 sccm. FWHM value of $\omega$-scan fur NiO(200) of the film and $\Phi$-scan for NiO(111) of the film was $4.2^{\circ}$ and $7^{\circ}$, respectively.

  • In many applications of functional oxides originally homogeneous materials are exposed to gradients in the chemical potential of oxygen. Prominent examples are solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) or oxygen permeation membranes (OPMs). Other thermodynamic potential gradients are gradients of electrical potential, temperature or uni-axial pressure. The applied gradients act as generalized thermodynamic forces and induce directed fluxes of the mobile components. These fluxes may lead to three basic degradation phenomena of the materials, which are kinetic demixing, kinetic decomposition, and morphological instabilities.

  • In this paper the functional requirements of a B-ISDN access network based on MAN are investigated. Firstly, criteria of designing access network for the B-ISDN is studied. Secondly, the types of subscribers and their service requirements are defined. Thirdly, various architectures of CPNs(Customer Premises Networks) are considered and their characteristics are studied, Finally, the interworking functions of a DQDB MAN as an access network are investigated.

  • We studied the initial reaction mechanism of Zn precursors, namely, di-methylzinc ($Zn(CH_3)_2$, DMZ) and diethylzinc ($Zn(C_2H_5)_2$, DEZ), for zinc oxide thin-film growth on a Si (001) surface using density functional theory. We calculated the migration and reaction energy barriers for DMZ and DEZ on a fully hydroxylized Si (001) surface. The Zn atom of DMZ or DEZ was adsorbed on an O atom of a hydroxyl (-OH) due to the lone pair electrons of the O atom on the Si (001) surface. The adsorbed DMZ or DEZ migrated to all available surface sites, and rotated on the O atom with low energy barriers in the range of 0.00-0.13 eV. We considered the DMZ or DEZ reaction at all available surface sites. The rotated and migrated DMZs reacted with the nearest -OH to produce a uni-methylzinc ($-ZnCH_3$, UMZ) group and methane ($CH_4$) with energy barriers in the range of 0.53-0.78 eV. In the case of the DEZs, smaller energy barriers in the range of 0.21-0.35 eV were needed for its reaction to produce a uni-ethylzinc ($-ZnC_2H_5$, UEZ) group and ethane ($C_2H_6$). Therefore, DEZ is preferred to DMZ due to its lower energy barrier for the surface reaction.

  • Activation tagging that uses T-DNA vectors containing multimerized transcriptional enhancers from the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S gene is a powerful tool to determine gene function in plants. This approach has been successfully applied in screening various types of mutations and cloning the corresponding genes. We generated an activation tagged hairy root pool of ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) in an attempt to isolate genes involved in the biosynthetic pathway of ginsenoside (triterpene saponin), which is known as the major active ingredient of the root. Quantitative and qualitative variation of ginsenoside in activation tagged hairy root lines were profiled using LC/MS. Metabolic profiling data enabled selection of a specific hairy root line which accumulated ginsenoside at a higher level than other lines. The relative expression level of several genes of triterpene biosynthetic pathway in the selected hairy root line was determined by real time RT-PCR. Overall results suggest that the activation tagged ginseng hairy root system described in this study would be useful in isolating genes involved in a complex metabolic pathway from genetically intractable plant species by metabolic profiling.

  • This paper reduces power dissipation with the minimum switching activity of functional units that have many operators. Therefore, it has more effects of power dissipation that operator dissipation to reduce power dissipation of whole circuit preferentially. This paper proposes an algorithm that minimize power dissipation in functional units operations that affect much as power dissipation in VLSI circuit. The algorithm has scheduled operands using power library that has information of all operands. The power library upgrades information of input data in each control step about all inputs of functional units and the information is used at scheduling process. Therefore, the power dissipation is minimized by functional units inputs in optimized data. This paper has applied algorithm that proposed for minimizing power dissipation to functional unit in high level synthesis. The result of experiment has effect of maximum 9.4 % for minimizing power dissipation.
