  • The purposes of this study were to survey types of pretreatment methods adopted by industrial hygiene laboratories in Korea for extracting heavy metals in welding fume samples and to compare performances of two pretreatment methods, the acid extraction and the microwave digestion, in extracting heavy metals contained in the real workplace samples from various welding jobs including arc, argon, and carbon dioxide. A total of 25 analytical chemists in the industrial hygiene laboratories participating the quality control program directed by the Korea Industrial Safety Corporation were interviewed by telephone. For the purpose of comparing performance of extracting heavy metals from real workplace samples, a total of 53 welders from 21 workplaces located in Anyang, Uiwang, and Kunpo areas were sampled from the period of March 22, 1999 to April 20, 1999. It was found that the most frequently adopted method for samples from the quality control program was the acid extraction method(40%) followed by the NIOSH 7300 method(36%). The NIOSH method, however, was the dominant method(36%) for samples from workplace followed by the acid extraction method(28%). In this study, two extraction methods, the acid extraction and the microwave digestion, were compared in terms of recovery rate, accuracy, and precision for both manganese and chromium. Both methods produced comparable results for the samples prepared for the quality control program. In contrast, concentrations of two heavy metals determined from real workplace samples pretreated with the microwave digestion method were statis tically significantly higher, manganese(166%) and chromium (200%), than those of utilizing the acid extraction method. These findings were consistent regardless of types of welding techniques used. The results of this study clearly show the importance of verifying the analytical performances of extraction methods for heavy metals not only for the samples from the quality control program but also from the real world samples collected from welding jobs.

  • Porous concrete enables water and air to pass through a firmly hardened material and allows required nutrients to reach roots of plants. The purpose of this study is to analyze void ratio, strength property and planting ability when using silica fume and fly ash, the change of aggregate gradation and ratio of paste to aggregate. The results of an experiment from the planting ability of the porous concrete to its influence on the compressive strength are reported in this paper. As a result of the experiment, the compressive strength is higher when the gradation of aggregate is smaller, and it also goes higher when the ratio of paste to aggregate gets larger. The planting ability of porous concrete is decided by the germination and the grass length of perennial ryegrass. The grass length of perennial ryegrass is longer when the gradation of aggregate is greater and the ratio of paste to aggregate gets smaller. Therefore the efficiency of planting goes through the perennial ryegrass is in compliance with the void ratio, aggregate gradation.

  • The mechanical and thermal properties of high temperature aluminate cementitious thermal storage materials were investigated in this paper. Alumina cement was used as basic binder and the effect of the replacement of fly ash, silica fume, calcium sulfo-aluminate and graphite for alumina cement was investigated. Experiments were performed to measure mechanical properties including compressive strength before and after thermal cycling, and split tensile strength, and to measure thermal properties including thermal conductivity and specific heat. Test results show that the residual compressive strengths of mixtures with alumina cement only, or alumina cement and silica fume were greater than those of the others. Additionally, the specific heat of mixture with graphite was largest in all the mixtures used in the study. The results of this study could be used to provide realistic information for material properties in thermal energy storage concrete in the future.

  • Ultra High Strength Concrete(UHSC) is necessary a clear presentation about mechanical property that is different from normal strength concrete and an evaluation of serviceability of high rise building which is used ultra high strength concrete. To mixing ultra high strength concrete with $f_{ck}$=150MPa pre-mix cement were manufactured and experimental study were conducted to evaluated on the mixing properties and compressive strength with major variables as unit cement contents, water-binder ratio and type of pre-mix cement. As a test result, it is shown that the concrete mixing time is required about 5$^{\sim}$6 minute untill the each materials(ordinary portland cement, silica fume, blast-furnace slag powder and anhydrite) are revitalized enough. A slump flow of fresh concrete are shown about 700$^{\sim}$750mm with proper viscosity. And average value of concrete compressive strength are shown about 77% in 7days, 87% in 14days and 102% in 56days for 28days of concrete material age. From this experimental study, a proper mixture proportion of pre-mix cement are recommended about 54$^{\sim}$59% OPC, 25$^{\sim}$30% blast-furnace slag powder and 10$^{\sim}$15% silica fume for mix the ultra high strength concrete with $f_{ck}$=150MPa.

  • A ferrosilicon (FS) by-product was applied into a cementitious binder in concrete substituting the ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The original material characteristic of FS is very identical to silica fume (SF) regarding chemical composition and physical properties such as specific surface area and specific gravity. Therefore, the FS and SF concrete or mortal of which 10% of the material was replaced to total binder weight were fabricated to evaluate the feasibility of using F S as a binder, and the comparative information of OPC, FS and SF concrete was given. The hydration characteristic of FS concrete was analyzed using X-ray diffraction analysis. The FS concrete was beneficial in compressive strength, resistivity against chloride ingress and reducing porosity considering performance of OPC concrete but the advantage was less than using SF. A possibility of alkali-silica expansion was found out from the FS concrete due to the agglomerated size of the silica particles.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate Chloride Attack Resistibility and mechanical properties of quaternary concrete adding fly ash, blast-furnace slag, and silica fume. Compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, chloride migration coefficient, charge passed from Rapid chloride penetration test(RCPT), and immersion testing in 3% NaCl are tested. Chloride migration coefficient and charge passed of quaternary concrete measured $0.032{\times}10^{-12}m^2/sec$ and 650 coulomb at 17 weeks, which are in a permitted limit. Also in immersion test, depth of chloride penetration and maximum chloride ion of quaternary concrete measured 3.7 mm and $10.211kg/m^3$ respectively. From the results, quaternary concrete adding fly ash, blast-furnace slag, and silica fume denotes improvement of mechanical properties and chloride attack resistibility.

  • Although applying self-consolidating concrete (SCC) in many modern structures is an inevitable fact, the high consumption of cement in its mixing designs has led to increased production costs and adverse environmental effects. In order to find economically viable sources with environmentally friendly features, natural pozzolan pumice and blast furnace slag in 10-50% of replacement binary designs have been investigated for experiments on the properties of fresh concrete, mechanical properties, and durability. As a natural pozzolan, pumice does not require advanced equipment to prepare for consumption and only needs to be powdered. Pumice has been the main focus of this research because of simple preparation. Also to validate the results, in addition to the control specimens of each design, fly ash as a known powder has been evaluated. Moreover, ternary mixes of pumice and silica fume were investigated to enhance the obtained results of binary mixes. It was concluded that pumice and slag powders indicated favorable performance in the high percentage of replacement.

  • SAW (Submerged Arc Welding) is often used for ship construction or welding pressure vessels and involves spraying a flux in a powder form to a welding site to a certain thickness and continuously supplying electrode wires therein. This welding method enables high current welding up to 1,500 to 3,000 A. Arc efficiency is higher than 95% and the technique allows clean work as it creates less welding fume, which is composed of fine metal oxide particles, and the arc beam is not exposed. In this study, SM490C-TMC thick plates were heterogeneously welded by SAW. Mechanical properties of welds were measured, and welds were assessed macroscopically and for adhering magnetic particles. The following conclusions were drawn. Bending tests showed no spots exploded on sample surfaces or any other defect, and plastic deformation testing confirmed sufficient weld toughness. These results showed the 1F welding method has no shortcomings in terms of bending performance.
