  • Metal surface decontamination characteristics were investigated by using a laser ablation method. A second harmonic generation of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with a wave length of 532 nm, a pulse energy of 150 mJ and a pulse width of 5 ns was employed to assess the decontamination performance for metal surfaces contaminated with $CsNO_3$, $Co(NH_4)_2(SO_4)_2$, $Eu_2O_3$ and $CeO_2$. The ablation behavior was investigated for the decontamination variables such as a number of laser shots, laser fluence and an irradiation angle. Their optimum values were found to be 8, 13.3 J/$cm^2$ and $30^{\circ}$, respectively. The decontamination efficiency was different depending on the kinds of the contaminated ions, due to their different melting and boiling points and was in the order: $CsNO_3>Co(NH_4)_2(SO_4)_2>Eu_2O_3>CeO_2$. We also evaluated a correlation between the metal ablation thickness and the number of laser shots for the different laser fluences.

  • A study on the vented gas explosion characteristics were carried out with the liquified petroleum gas(LPG) which is used in domestics and industries fuel. To evaluate a damage by gas explosion and to predict a explosion hazards, a series of experiment have been performed in the regular hexahedron vessel of 270${\iota}$. A side of the vessel was made to setting a polyester diaphragm which was ruptured by explosion to simulate an accidental explosion which ruptured the window by explosion. Experimental parameters were LPG concentration, ignition position, venting area, a strength of diaphragm which was ruptured and distances from venting, Experimental results showed that vented gas explosion pressure was more affected by the diaphragm strength than the gas concentration, and the vented gas explosion pressure and blast wave pressure was increased with decreasing the venting area and increasing the strength of diaphragm. In this research we can find that a damage by vented explosion at the outside can be larger than the inside by blast wave pressure near the venting.

  • Developments in the understanding of fire behaviour for large open-plan spaces typical of tall buildings have been greatly outpaced by the rate at which these buildings are being constructed and their characteristics changed. Numerous high-profile fire-induced failures have highlighted the inadequacy of existing tools and standards for fire engineering when applied to highly-optimised modern tall buildings. With the continued increase in height and complexity of tall buildings, the risk to the occupants from fire-induced structural collapse increases, thus understanding the performance of complex structural systems under fire exposure is imperative. Therefore, an accurate representation of the design fire for open-plan compartments is required for the purposes of design. This will allow for knowledge-driven, quantifiable factors of safety to be used in the design of highly optimised modern tall buildings. In this paper, we review the state-of-the-art experimental research on large open-plan compartment fires from the past three decades. We have assimilated results collected from 37 large-scale compartment fire experiments of the open-plan type conducted from 1993 to 2019, covering a range of compartment and fuel characteristics. Spatial and temporal distributions of the heat fluxes imposed on compartment ceilings are estimated from the data. The complexity of the compartment fire dynamics is highlighted by the large differences in the data collected, which currently complicates the development of engineering tools based on physical models. Despite the large variability, this analysis shows that the orders of magnitude of the thermal exposure are defined by the ratio of flame spread and burnout front velocities (VS / VBO), which enables the grouping of open-plan compartment fires into three distinct modes of fire spread. Each mode is found to exhibit a characteristic order of magnitude and temporal distribution of thermal exposure. The results show that the magnitude of the thermal exposure for each mode are not consistent with existing performance-based design models, nevertheless, our analysis offers a new pathway for defining thermal exposure from realistic fire scenarios in large open-plan compartments.

  • The combustion characteristics of anthracite, which follow a complex process with low reactivity, must be considered through the dynamic behavior of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was performed to analyze the combustion characteristics of anthracite in a pilot scale 0.1 MWth Oxy-fuel circulating fluidized bed (Oxy-CFB) boiler. The 0.1MWth Oxy-CFB boiler is composed of combustor (0.15 m l.D., 10 m High), cyclone, return leg, and so on. To perform CFD analysis, a 3D simulation model reactor was designed and used. The anthracite used in the experiment has an average particle size of 1,070 ㎛ and a density of 2,326 kg/m3. The flow pattern of gas-solids inside the reactor according to the change of combustion environment from air combustion to oxygen combustion was investigated. At this time, it was found that the temperature distribution in air combustion and oxygen combustion showed a similar pattern, but the pressure distribution was lower in oxygen combustion. addition, since it has a higher CO2 concentration in oxygen combustion than in air combustion, it can be expected that carbon dioxide capture will take place actively. As a result, it was confirmed that this study can contribute to the optimized design and operation of a circulating fluidized bed reactor using anthracite.

  • We studied to find the optimal manufacturing conditions of coffee grounds sludge RDF with oil drying method. We expanded the lab scale to pilot scale to compare the efficiency of the oil-drying equipment and The selection of the ratio of coffee grounds and oil, the setting temperature, and the temperature change and water content with time were measured. In order to analyze the characteristics of the research results, characteristics of solid fuels produced(Coffee grounds of oil-dried) by calorimeter, TGA, combustion equipment, and combustion gas measuring instrument were analyzed. As a result, the ratio of oil to coffee grounds was 4: 1, and when the setting temperature was set to $300^{\circ}C$, the water content reached 10wt.% or less within 20 minutes. ln addition, it showed high calorific value of 6,273kcal/kg. However, coffee grounds had a similar composition to wood and showed high luminance and produced a lot of CO in combustion gas. As a result, it is considered to be unsuitable for thermoelectric power plant and camping fuel, but the initial ignition speed is high and the heat generation is high, so it is considered that it can replace the fuels for current use.

  • In this study, the characteristics of coffee grounds were reviewed by making them from solid fuel through heat-drying and oil-drying method. The differences in the higher calorific power by each dried sample were compared. And industrial analysis using the thermogravimetric analyzer was considered for applicability to organic waste and oily samples. Before and after drying, the surface of the specimen was observed with SEM equipment and the ingredients were measured through the EDS equipment. As a result, no other hazardous substances, such as heavy metals, were measured. Next, The differences between thermal decomposition and combustion reactions were considered through the TG and DTG curves. As a result, it is that the oil-dried coffee grounds is longer to burn than the heat-dried coffee grounds. Finally, the combustion gases emitted through the thermogravimetric analyzer were collected and the carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide performed qualitative and quantitative analysis using GC over time.

  • In this study, the newest technology available to reduce GHG emissions, which can be applicable in energy industries of the future that has large reduction obligations by energy target management and large intensity of GHG emissions, has been investigated by searching the technical characteristics of each technology. The newest technology to reduce GHG emissions in the field of power generation and energy can be mainly classified into the improvement of efficiency, CCS, and gas combined-cycle technology. In order to improve the reliability of the GHG emission factor obtained from the investigation process, it has been compared to the technology-specific GHG emission factor derived from the estimated amount of emissions. Then the GHG abatement measures, using the derived estimation of factor, by using the newest technology to reduce GHG emissions have been predicted. As a result, the GHG reduction rate by technology of CCS development has been expected to be the largest more than 30%, and the abatement rate by technology of coal gasified fuel cell and pressurized fluidized-bed thermal power generation has been showed more than 20%. If the effective introduction of the newest technology and the study of its characteristics is continued, and properly applied for future GHG emissions, it can be prospected that the national GHG reduction targets can be achieved in cost-efficient way.

  • Uses of fossil fuels like coal and oil increases with industrial development, and problems like abnormal climate come up as greenhouse gas increases. Accordingly, studies are actively conducted on eco-friendly renewable energy as a replacement for the main resources, and especially, wood pellets with high thermal efficiency are in the limelight as an alternative fuel in thermal power stations and gas boilers. However, despite a constant increase in their usage, few studies are conducted on their risks like fire and spontaneous combustion. Thus, this study found the auto-ignition temperature and critical ignition temperature of wood pellets with a change in flow rate in a thermostatic bath, using a sample vessel with 20 cm in length, 20 cm in height and 14 cm in thickness to predict their ignition characteristics. Consequently, at the flow rate of 0 NL/min, as the core temperature of the sample increased to higher than the ambient temperature, they ignited at $153^{\circ}C$, when the critical ignition temperature was $152.5^{\circ}C$. At the flow rates of 0.5 NL/min and 1.0 NL/min, it was $149.5^{\circ}C$, and at the flow rate of 1.5 NL/min, it was $147.5^{\circ}C$. Consequently, at the same storage, the more the flow rate, the lower the critical ignition temperature became.

  • To improve the optical characteristics and antifouling of anti-reflective coating (AR) films, various AR coating films were prepared by varying the mixing ratio of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS)/base and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS)/acid hybrid solution. Prepared AR coating films were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, contact angle analyzer, atomic force microscope (AFM), FT-IR and pencil scratch hardness test. In an AR coating film that prepared from the hybrid solution with a 10 wt% MTMS/acid solution, the glass substrate showed an excellent optical property (97.2% transmittance), good antifouling ($121^{\circ}$ water contact angle and $90^{\circ}\;CH_2I_2$ contact angle) and moderate mechanical strength (pencil hardness of 4 H). In particular, it is considered that the good antifouling was due to the well dispersion of the methyl group ($-CH_3$), derived from a small amount of MTMS/acid solution in the hybrid solution, on the substrate surface. From results of the pencil hardness test, the mechanical strength of AR coating film was improved as the content of MTMS/acid solution increased.
