Insamyangyung-tang(인삼양영탕) was appeared first in Taepunghyemin-whajegugbang(태평혜민화제국방) which was written by Jin and others at Song Dynasty. This prescription is applied to senility and long lasting weakness, little strength of spleen and lung(비폐기허), and insufficiency of blood. The Insamyangyung-tang is composed of medical stuffs which Rhizoma Cnidii is taken out from Sipjiendaebotang and Pericarpium Citri Nobilis, Fructus Schizandrae, Radix Polygalae are added to it. This prescription is used in China up to the present. In korea, according to Donguibogam, Rhizoma Cnidii and Poria are taken out from Sipjiendaebotang and Pericarpium Citri Nobilis, Fructus Schizandrae, Radix Polygalae are added to it, and Ramulus Cinnamomi is changed to Cortex Cinnamomi, and also Radix Ledebouriellae is newly added to it. This is reorganized to fit for Korean physical conditions and to be useful for deficiency of blood, and also to be efficacious for coming and going of chillness and fever and running with sweat due to weakness of Liver. In the point of view of Hyunsang medicine, Insamyangyung-tang is applied to shapes and symptoms as follows : This prescription becomes more efficacious to women than to men. At the age of fifties when liver grows weak it effects a cure. It takes effect to the shape of going easily into the deficiency of blood, that is, to the Hyul Kwa with an oval face. It effects a cure on the man who has wrinkles on the bridge of the nose, who has marks of being choked up on the central area between two brows, or who has distinctive size of eyes and nose. It is efficacious against symptoms which are to be exhausted, to be weak, to lose flesh, to be coming and going of chillness and fever and running with sweat.

  • For the screening of anti-inflammation and antioxidative activities, ethanolic extract of 40 species of traditional herbal medicines were examined their hyaluronidase inhibitory effect and radical scavenging activity in vitro. From the result of the hyaluronidase inhibitory activity using a Morgan-Elson assay, Astragali Radix, Eucommia Cortex, Schizandrae Fructus, Scutellaria Radix, Acanthopanacis Cortex, Chaenomelis Fructus, Amomum xanthioides Wallich and Moutan Radicis Cortex showed more than 50% hyaluronidase inhibitory effects at the concentration of 10 mg/mL. In the various solvent fractions (n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, water) prepared from ethanolic extracts, the ethyl acetate fraction of all extracts tested showed strong activity. Antioxidative activity was evaluated by assaying electron-donating ability to DPPH free radical and scavenging of hydroxyl radical (ㆍOH) generated through Fenton reaction, respectively. Rubus coreanus Miq, Moutan Radicis Cortex, Paeoniae Radix Alba, Plantaginis Semen and Sorbus commixta Hedl. showed high activity more than 90%, yet similar activity to $\alpha$-tocopherol and BHA at the concentration of 1 mg/mL in electron donating activity. The scavenging effects of ethanolic extracts on hydroxyl radical were investigated using a 2-deoxyribose oxidation method and tested all extracts showed significant radical scavenging activity. The experiment was also performed to examine whether herbal medicines having significant lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity, Schizandrae-Fructus is the strongest inhibitory activity in both linoleic acid and liposome peroxidation.

  • This study has been conducted to investigate the amount of residual sulfur dioxide for herbal medicines of 30 species which are purchased in 13 different regions (Bonghwa, Busan, Chunju, Jecheun, Kwangiu, Keumsan, Seoul, Taeku, Cheungdu, Xian, Beijing, Tokyo and Osaka). The sulfur dioxide residues were determined in the collected 386 samples by the modified Monier-Williams method. The residues of sulfur dioxide in 386 samples ranged from ND (under detection limit) to 2808 ppm. The sulfur dioxide in Cassiae Semon, Cinnamomi Ramulus, Cervi Cornu, Hoelen, Crataegi Fructus, Artemisiae Argyi Herba, Scolopendrae Corpus, Schizandrae Fructus and Cyperi Rhizoma were detected under the detection limit regardless of the collected regions. The sulfur dioxide residues in herbal medicines collected in domestic regions were relatively lower than those in foreign regions. There are no standards for sulfur dioxide residual limits of herbal medicines in Korea. This results will provide the scientific basis for the standardization of sulfur dioxide residues in Korea Pharmacopoeia.
