  • The leaf spring is generally used effectively in load supporting because it has tension-diffused function in comparison with other springs. Nowadays the leaf spring is used widely in the suspensions of automobile and trains. The stiffness and the damping characteristics of the leaf spring being essential for the performance of vehicles, the exact evaluation is required. Various approximate formula are normally used for the leaf spring design. however, accuracy and trust are decreased because the contact and frictional characteristics between leaf plates are generally neglected. In this paper, nonlinear stiffness matrix of the leaf spring is solved by contact-element applying FEM for considering the contact and frictional characteristics between leaf plates. The results of proposed FE model are compared with test data.

  • In this paper a mathematical framework fur deriving acceleration bounds from given joint torque limits of multiple cooperating robots are described. Especially when the different frictional contacts for every contact are assumed and the torque limits are given in 2-norm sense, we show that the resultant geometrical configuration for the acceleration is composed of corresponding parts of ellipsoids. Since the frictional forces at the contacts are proportional to the normal squeezing forces, the key points of the work includes how to determine internal forces exerted by each robot in order not to cause slip at the contacts while the object is carried by external forces. A set of examples composed of two robot systems are shown with point-contact-with-friction model and insufficient or proper degree of freedom robots.

  • We propose a new approach to compute possible acceleration boundary, so is called dynamic manipulability, for multiple robotic systems with frictional contacts between robot end-effectors and object. As the frictional contact condition which requires each contact force to lie within a friction cone is based on the nonlinear inequality formalism is not easy to handle the constraint in manipulability analysis. To include the frictional contact condition into the conventional manipulability analysis we approximate the friction cone to a pyramid which is described by linear inequality constraints. And then achievable acceleration boundaries of manipulated object are calculated conventional linear programming technique under constraints for torque capability of each robot and the approximated contact condition. With the proposed method we find some solution to which conventional approaches did not reach. Also, case studies are Presented to illustrate the correctness of the proposed approach for two robot systems of simple planar robots and PUMA560 robots.

  • This study is concerned with an effect of frictional condition in a forward/backward combined extrusion process. Generally, the material flow of the billet is influenced by the corners of the die cavity, the ratio in reduction in area, and thickness ratio of backward can thickness to forward can thickness. In addition, the frictional condition in contact area between the billet and the punch/die also affect the material flow. This paper investigated the effect of frictional condition for variable friction factors. The FEM simulation has been carried out in order to examine the effect of frictional condition. Deformation patterns and flow characteristics were examined in terms of design parameters such as extruded length ratio etc. Die pressure exerted on the die-workpiece interface is calculated by the simulation results and analyzed for safe tooling. Therefore the numerical simulation works provide a combined extrusion process of stable cold forging process planning to avoid the severe damage on the tool.

  • In order to design an effective foot surface which can provide adequate friction for a self-propelled medical microrobot moving inside the small intestine, frictional mechanisms between the small intestine inner wall and the foot surface of the robot must be understood. In this paper, mechanical interlocking effect was considered to design the surface of the foot that can generate the desired frictional force. The concept of the design was derived from the hookworm that lives inside the small intestine. Hookwarms are known to adhere to the small intestine wall by interlocking with villi on the surface of the small intestine. The interlocking mechanism was considered as the main frictional mechanism for the design of the microrobot foot surface in this work. 2 mm and 6 mm diameter solid and hollow cylindrical shaped foot specimens were designed and tested to assess the frictional force between the specimens and the porcine small intestine specimen.

  • The friction and wear of tire determined by frictional behavior of tire tread that translate driving force, cornering force and braking force between automobile and road as a result of frictional behavior of each tread block. The tire tread block is representative case of rubber block doing frictional behavior. In this paper, frictional behavior of rubber block under compressive force and shear force was analytically obtained by using slip starting position parameter instead of friction coefficient which is uncertain to express exact value between rubber and other surfaces yet. And local coefficients of friction were calculated as a function of compressive force, shear force, shear modulus of rubber, shape factor and slip starting position.

  • The frictional behavior of stamping process is a function of interface parameters such as sheet and tool material, lubricant, surface roughness, contact pressure, sliding speed etc. Among these parameters the thing that can be controlled by a steel maker is the surface roughness of sheet. In this study, effects of surface roughness on the frictional behavior of steel sheet for automotive were investigated to find out the way to improve the frictional characteristics of steel sheet. The cold rolled steel sheets with various surface roughnesses were prepared for the test. The flat type friction test was conducted with different lubricant conditions. The surface roughness effect on frictional behavior depends on the viscosity of lubricant. The frictional characteristic of steel sheet was influenced by the amplitude of roughness as well as the shape of that.

  • Ultrasonic infrared thermography is an active thermography methods. In this method, mechanical energy is introduced to a structure, it is converted into heat energy at the defects, and an infrared camera detects the heat for inspection. The heat generation mechanisms are dependent on many factors such as structure characteristics, defect type, excitation method and contact condition, which make it difficult to predict heat distribution in ultrasonic infrared thermography. In this paper, a method to simulate frictional heating, known to be one of the main heat generation mechanisms at the closed defects in metal structures, is proposed for ultrasonic infrared thermography. This method uses linear vibration analysis results without considering the contact boundary condition at the defect so that it is intuitive and simple to implement. Its advantages and disadvantages are also discussed. The simulation results show good agreement with the modal analysis and experiment result.

  • The success of warm forming of Mg alloy sheet is greatly influenced by friction at elevated temperature, depending on the surface treatment of the tool. The tool coating affected the frictional characteristics of AZ31B Mg alloy sheet at elevated and room temperatures. The frictional behavior of the Mg alloy sheet at room temperature was not significantly affected by surface treatment conditions of the tool, but was significantly affected at elevated temperature. When the contact pressure is high, a few surface-treated tools exhibit a higher coefficient of friction than those without surface treatment. It is important to select the surface treatment conditions of the tool in order to ensure appropriate friction during warm forming of Mg alloy sheet.
