We developed friction welded bimetallic sleeve for 220kV aluminum conductor XLPE cable. Not only friction welded bimetallic sleeve for Termination(EB-A, EB-G) but also friction welded sleeve for Joint of Al to Cu conductor was developed regardless of this project. Generally, friction welded sleeve used to connect Al conductor cable to Cu conductor cable and used for improvement of mechanical property of terminal by offer the copper side of friction welded bimetallic sleeve at the Termination. Connection method for Al-Cu conductor has mainly used friction welding at the solid state, because it is difficult to connect by using conventional welding method. this investigation introduces development of friction welded bimetallic sleeve by friction welding and test result of 220kV Al conductor XLPE cable and accessories using friction welded sleeve.
This paper deals with investigating experimentally the effects of PWHT on the weld quality such as strength, toughness, hardness and micro-structure of the welded joints in friction welding of torsion bar material SUP9A bar to bar. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1) It was certified that the condition of the post-weld heat treatment(PWHT) for the friction welded joints was very satisfactory because both strength and toughness of the joints were improved as almost same as those of the base metal or better by the PWHT. 2) The peak of hardness distribution of the friction welded joints can be eliminated by PWHT, resulting in being almost equalized at the weld interface, the HAZ(heat affected zone) and the base metal. 3) The micro-structure of the base meta., HAZ and weld interface(WI) of friction welded joints welded at the optimum welding condition consists of the same sorbite structure obtained by PWHT and fined sorbite at WI, resulting in increasing toughness as well as strength, and no micro structural defect has been found at the friction welded zone.

The specimens of two base metals and material friction-welded with hetrogeneous steels of SM40C and STS304 have been prepared and the characteristics of rupture and crack propagation of them have been examined. In the friction-welded material, the width of HAZ is 3.0mm for STS304 and 3.4mm for SM40C. The hardness distribution in HAZ of SM40C is decreased gradually as being getting off interface, but that in HAZ of STS304 is decreased remarkedly and the value of hardness becomes a little lower than that of the base metal in region of 1mm from interface and becomes a little higher than that of the base metal. The tensile strength of the friction-welded material appeared a little lower than that of the base metal and rupture by tensile load is developed in HAZ of STS304 and the position of rupture is at region of low hardness(1mm from interface). The crack propagation rates(da/dN) in both HAZ of the friction-welded material are a little higher than those in both base metals, but the difference are less except for the case of SM45C in low .DELTA. K value. It has been ascertained that the crack in the interface propagates selectively along the HAZ of SM40C and consequently the crack propagation rate is almost similar to that in the HAZ of SM40C.
When friction welded material is actually used for parts of a machine, its fatigue strength is an important problem. Especially, there is no report which deals with mechanical properties of friction welded mild steel(S20C) and stainless steel(SUS27B). In this study are compared the compared the characteristics of such specimens as mild steel, stainless steel and welded material in the S-N diagram. And metallurgical consideration is directed to HAZ. The obtained results in these studies are summarized as follows; 1) The fatigue strength of welded material is slightly less than those of mild steel and stainless steel. 2) In the S-N diagram the knuckle point of welded material has larger number of cycle than that of stainless steel. 3) The fatigue notch factor of welded material is between those of mild steel and stainless steel. 4) mHv is the largest on the weld interface. It is larger before than after fatigue test on the stainless steel side. On the mild steel side it is the way around.
We evaluate the properties of friction welded STK400 steel tube in terms of the relationship between microstructures and mechanical properties. Friction welding is conducted at a rotation speed of 1,600 rpm and upset time of 3-7 sec for different thicknesses of STK 400 tubes. To analyse the grain boundary characteristic distributions(GBCDs) in the welded zone, electron backscattering diffraction(EBSD) method is introduced. The results show that a decrease in welding time (3 sec.) creates a notable increase grain refinement so that the average grain size decreases from $15.1{\mu}m$ in the base material to $4.5{\mu}m$ in the welded zone. These refined grains achieve significantly enhanced microhardness and a slightly higher yield and higher tensile strengths than those of the base material. In particular, all the tensile tested specimens experience a fracture aspect at the base material zone but not at the welded zone, which means a soundly welded state for all conditions.
This study was carried out to evaluate the microstructures and mechanical properties of a friction stir welded Ni based alloy. Inconel 600 (single phase type) alloy was selected as an experimental material. For this material, friction stir welding (FSW) was performed at a constant tool rotation speed of 400 rpm and a welding speed of 150~200 mm/min by a FSW machine, and argon shielding gas was utilized to prevent surface oxidation of the weld material. At all conditions, sound friction stir welds without any weld defects were obtained. The electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) method was used to analyze the grain boundary character distributions (GBCDs) of the welds. As a result, dynamic recrystallization was observed at all conditions. In addition, grain refinement was achieved in the stir zone, gradually accelerating from 19 ${\mu}m$ in average grain size of the base material to 5.5 ${\mu}m$ (150 mm/min) and 4.1 ${\mu}m$ (200 mm/min) in the stir zone with increasing welding speed. Grain refinement also led to enhancement of the mechanical properties: the 200 mm/min friction stir welded zone showed 25% higher microhardness and 15% higher tensile strength relative to the base material.
Recently, application of friction welded SUH35/SUH3 is increasing in the manufacturing process of automotive engine valves For securing its reliability and a reasonable strength evaluation method, it is necessary to assess stress singularity under the residual stress condition on the friction welded interface between dissimilar materials. In this paper, strength evaluation method of friction welded materials was investigated by boundary element method and static tensile testing. An advanced method of quantitative strength evaluation for SUH35/SUH3 friction welded material is to be suggested by establishing fracture criterion by using stress singularity factors.
To evaluate the development of the microstructure and mechanical properties on surface modified and post-heattreated Inconel 718 alloy, this study was carried out. A friction stir process as a surface modification method was employed, and overlap welded Inconel 718 alloy as an experimental material was selected. The friction stir process was carried out at a tool rotation speed of 200 rpm and tool down force of 19.6-39.2 kN; post-heat-treatment with two steps was carried out at $720^{\circ}C$ for 8 h and $620^{\circ}C$ for 6 h in vacuum. To prevent the surface oxidation of the specimen, the method of using argon gas as shielding was utilized during the friction stir process. As a result, applying the friction stir process was effective to develop the grain refinement accompanied by dynamic recrystallization, which resulted in enhanced mechanical properties as compared to the overlap welded material. Furthermore, the post-heat-treatment after the friction stir process accelerated the formation of precipitates, such as gamma prime (${\gamma}^{\prime}$) and MC carbides, which led to the significant improvement of mechanical properties. Consequently, the microhardness, yield, and tensile strengths of the post-heat-treated material were increased more than 110%, 124% and 85 %, respectively, relative to the overlap welded material. This study systematically examined the relationship between precipitates and mechanical properties.
This study was carried out to evaluate the developed microstructures and mechanical properties of friction welded A6063 alloy. For this work, specimens were prepared at a size of 12 mm ${\O}{\times}80mm$, and friction welding was carried out at a rotation speed of 2,000 RPM, friction pressure of $12kgf/cm^2$ and upset pressure of $25kgf/cm^2$. To perform an analysis of the grain boundary characteristic distributions, such as the grain size, orientation and misorientation angle distributions, the electron back-scattering diffraction method was used. In addition, in order to identify the dispersed intermetallic compounds of the base and welded materials, transmission electron microscopy was used. The experimental results found that the application of friction welding on A6063 led to significant grain refinement of the welded zone relative to that of the base material. Besides this, intermetallic compounds such as AlMnSi and $Al_2Cu$ were found to be dispersed with more refined size relative to that of the base material. This formation retains the mechanical properties of the welds, which results in the fracture aspect at the base material zone. Therefore, based on the developed microstructures and mechanical properties, the application of friction welding on A6063 could be used to obtain a sound weld zone.
