  • The purpose of this study was to investigate preservice elementary school teachers' views on the relationship between science/technology and society. Freshmen (n=93) and seniors (n=82) at three universities of education were asked to express their views with 8 items in the Views On Science-Technology-Society, which consisted of two subcategories; 'influence of science/technology on society' (4 items) and 'influence of society on science/technology' (4 items). Mann-Whitney U test revealed that the scores of the freshmen were higher than those of the seniors. This trend was notable particularly in the item concerning 'influence of corporations on science/technology' and 'influence of interest groups on science/technology'. In comparing the scores by gender, a significant difference was found in the item concerning 'influence of policy on science/technology' for the freshmen.

  • Objectives: Smoking, especially among youth, has been increasing in Korea. This study was performed to evaluate the effects of a newly developing well-designed packaged smoking prevention program (PSPP) for middle school students and to propose further ideas about the program. Methods: The subjects were middle school students enrolled in one Busan city middle school. The effects of the PSPP were evaluated through intervention and follow-up. The PSPP was executed for 10 hours during the semester of middle school freshmen by the author as a position of health teacher, from 1999. After PSPP, cognitions and experiences about smoking were assessed annually from February, 2000 to 2002 by questionnaire. The responses of the educated group and the non-educated group (enrolled in the school at 1998) were compared through chi-square test and odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) using SPSS program (ver 10.0). Results: In the three years' follow-up study on the students enrolled in 1999, the proportion of habitual smoking increased significantly (p<0.001); freshmen 0.2%, sophmore 1.7%, junior 5.0%. However, these level were lower than the results of national study; freshmen 1.1 %, sophmorer 6.3%, junior 8.5%. Also, the risk of smoking based on the response of 'smoking is hazardous to my health' increased by higher grading. In the comparison of educated and non-educated group, the proportion of the habitual smoking was significantly lower in the educated group(5.0%) than in the non-educated group(13.5%) (OR [95%CI]=0.33 [0.20∼0.57]). The response rate of 'smoking is hazardous to my health' was higher (OR [95%CI]=4.42 [2.52∼7.77]), and that of 'maybe smoking in the future' was lower (OR [95%CI]=0.43 [0.31∼0.59]) in the educated group than in the non-educated group. Conclusions: Though there is not enough information and it was a relatively short evaluation period, this PSPP is considered to be effective in smoking prevention in middle school students. Interests and continuity would be emphasized for the success of smoking prevention programs for younger subjects.

  • Chemistry laboratory class was produced for senior high school freshmen with the cooperation of university staffs, high school teachers and the university students. Although the students who will take the lab class are senior high school freshmen, we decided to prepare four experiments that are simple and have highly visible reactions or transformation. That is, 1) Water purification, 2) Surface modification, 3) Briggs-Rauscher reaction, and 4) Polymer synthesis and characterization. After the safety guideline and experiment instructions by the faculty staffs, two teaching assistants (TAs) supervised each experiment. Since taking a direct part in it will provide stronger impact than only being one who is just watching the experiment, all experiments contained some process that the high school students must handle the reagents, tools or the equipment, by themselves. Although, the operation performed by the students was limited to a series of simple actions, the various unique phenomena presented by the experiments impressed the students. The lab class was fruitful not only for high school students, but also good for university students. The lab class provided good opportunity for them to improve the abilities to teach and guide someone.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of 'affirmative language' experiment upon freshmen nursing students' negative affect, self-efficacy and stress coping style. Methods: A nonequivalent control quasi-experiment was conducted on the subjects of 55 freshmen nursing students for 26(experimental group) and 29(control group). Data were analyzed using x2-test and t-test for participants' homogeneity test and conducted content analysis of process diary record and personal impressions. Results: As for negative affect, in case of the experimental group, depression(t=-2.384, p=.022) and anxiety(t=-2.243, p=.025) were significantly low with no difference for the control group. As for self-efficacy, both experimental and control groups showed significance and as for stress coping style, the control group used sub-categorized strategies better than the experimental group. There were 4 topics and subsequent 15 topics derived from the content analysis. 'Affirmative language' experiment showed alleviation of depression and anxiety helpful for study participants in self-reporting measurement, and helpful for stress self-management competence. Conclusion: It is necessary to connect the curriculum operation with interest of competence and practice of students stress self-management through the participating experiment experience.

  • The deterioration of freshmen's scholastic performance has been markedly intensified and this phenomenon leads to serious problem in managing a college curriculum. In this study, peer tutoring, as a learning ability improvement program in Hoseo university, was introduced and the influence of the program on freshmen's scholastic performance was analyzed. In managing the program, a spontaneous participation of students was guided, a systematical network was built up among participants, tasks were assigned to participants and the results were verified for the improvement of the program. As a result, it was considered that peer tutoring strengthened the relationship among students, increased the leadership and responsibility as well as helped to enhance the interest in studying and improved the scholastic performance for both tutors and tutees.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences between freshmen and the other students' career development competencies and educational needs. To achieve this, the survey was carried out and 362 undergraduates participated. The findings of the survey were shown as follows: First, the students perceived that effective interpersonal relationships and positive self-concept formation were more needed. Second, only the positive self-concept formation showed statistically significant differences. Third, the rating of the educational needs was identical from the first place to the forth, but different from the fifth to the sixth. Fourth, by the Locus for Focus model, more information was identified about educational needs of students. These results will contribute to develop the career education programs.

  • Many of learners in cyber universities have experienced the difficulties of learning and participation because they have never participated courses of cyber universities before. One of main reasons why they have experienced the difficulties was that they might have not received systematic guidances of university system as well as learning supports, depending on their readiness of e-learning. Otherwise, they may have lack of supports frequently and finally, fail to graduate. However, few studies were conducted to investigate the e-learning readiness of freshmen and enrollees in cyber universities. The purpose of the study was to analyze the e-learning readiness and learning activities of freshmen and enrollees of A cyber university and to support them more systematically and get them to succeed in studying. In the results, there were no differences between the freshmen and enrollees in basic competencies of cyber learning as well as interaction, task performance, and learning methods.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of self-regulated learning ability of freshmen in nursing college on the learning persistence intention, and to determine if their learning motivation meditates the relationship between them. Methods: The study design was based on descriptive research. Data were collected from 146 nursing freshmen studying at a university in D city from June 5, 2017 to June 7, 2017. Results: There was a positive correlation among learning persistence intention, self-regulated learning ability (r=.57, p<.001) and learning motivation (r=.60, p<.001). Also, it was found that learning motivation was positively correlated with self-regulated learning ability (r=.79, p<.001). According to the Sobel test results, the learning motivation had a complete mediating effect (${\beta}=.39$, p<.001) between self-regulated learning ability and learning persistence intention (Z=3.63, p<.001). Conclusion: Therefore, this study suggests developing a learning motivation program to improve self-regulated learning ability and learning persistence intention of nursing students during their freshman year.
