  • One fundamental element of probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) is the initiating event (IE) analysis. Since IE frequencies can change over time, time-trend analysis is required to obtain optimized IE frequencies. Accordingly, such time-trend analyses have been employed to estimate industry-average IE frequencies for use in the PSAs of U.S. nuclear power plants (NPPs); existing PSAs of Korean NPPs, however, neglect such analysis in the estimation of IE frequencies. This article therefore provides the method for and results of estimating Korean industry-average IE frequencies using time-trend analysis. It also examines the effects of the IE frequencies obtained from this study on risk insights by applying them to recently updated internal events Level 1 PSA models (at-power and shutdown) for an OPR-1000 plant. As a result, at-power core damage frequency decreased while shutdown core damage frequency increased, with the related contributions from each IE category changing accordingly. These results imply that the incorporation of time-trend analysis leads to different IE frequencies and resulting risk insights. The IE frequency distributions presented in this study can be used in future PSA updates for Korean NPPs, and should be further updated themselves by adding more recent data.

  • In order to modify flexible mode frequencies, finite element analysis is applied for a lens-holder in pick-up actuator. Several design parameters like shape and local dimension of a lens-holder were selected adequately and sensitivities of the design variables for vibration modes were obtained by FE analysis and this result was used for updating FE model. A sensitivity matrix between the natural frequencies and the design variables was calculated by finite difference method. By comparing the calculated natural frequencies with target frequencies, modification of the design variables was acquired and used for improving FE model. Calculated natural frequencies after several iterations by FE analysis coincided with target frequencies and the errors between them were minimized.

  • A precise fit of the implant prosthesis is one of the most important factors in preventing mechanical complications. To analyze the degree of the misfit of implant prosthesis, a modal testing experiment was accomplished. And. to interpret the modal testing analysis mathematically, three-dimensional finite element models were established. In the experimental modal testing analysis, with a laser displacement meter, FFT analyzer, impact hammer, etc., natural frequencies of the models with various degree of prosthesis fit were determined after the frequency response function were calculated. In the finite element analysis, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the models which simulated those of experimental modal testing were computed. The results were as follows: 1. Natural frequencies of the prosthesis-abutment were related to the contact state between components. 2. In the modal testing experiment, the natural frequencies increased from $50{\mu}m$ to $200{\mu}m$ gap and reached a plateau. 3. In the finite element analysis, the natural frequencies decreased gradually according to the in crease of the gap size. 4. In the finite element analysis, the mode shapes of model 1 with misfitting prosthesis showed different patterns from those without misfitting prosthesis. 5. The devices including a laser displacement meter used in this study were useful for measuring the natural frequencies of an implant prosthesis which had various degrees of fit.

  • Tolerance analysis method for natural frequencies of multi-body systems having a equilibrium position is suggested in this paper. To perform the tolerance analysis, the Monte-Carlo Method is conventionally employed. However, the Monte-Carlo Method has some weakness; spending too much time for analysis and having a low accuracy and hard to converge in the numerical unstable area. To resolve these problems, a tolerance analysis method is suggested in this paper. Sensitivity equations of natural frequencies are derived at the equilibrium position. By employing the sensitivity information of mass, damping and stiffness matrices, the sensitivity of natural frequencies can be calculated.

  • The effect of liquid level on the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a partially liquid-filled circular cylindrical shell with various boundary conditions is investigated by means of a theoretical analysis based upon Fourier series expansion method and a finite element analysis using ANSYS computer program. Two dimensional mode shapes of the liquid-coupled shell structure are obtained by the ANSYS finite element analysis and show that the liquid level affect the nodal point movement. It is found that the variation of normalized naturalfrequencies (natural frequencies of liquid-filled shell/antural frequencies ofempty shell) to the liquid level is depend on the axial mode numbers and circumferential wave numbers. Additionally, it is found that the number of variational steps of normalized natural frequencies is identicial to that of axial nodal points of the mode shape.

  • In order to improve the prediction of dynamic behavior in structures, several lower vibration modes from FFT analysis through experiments are used to update the mechanical properties followed by the updated frequencies from numerical analysis. Performance index consists of the sum of error norms between the chosen frequencies and corresponding frequencies from numerical analysis. As an updating process of the natural frequencies, the optimization algorithm based on conjugate gradient method is adopted. The gradient of performance index is calculated using the sensitivity of selected eigenvalues with respect to each design parameter. The mechanical properties of lamina, E$\_$l/, E$\_$2/, .nu.$\_$12/ and G$\_$12/, are design parameters for the updating process. The proposed method is applied to predict the dynamic behavior of composite laminated plates of [0]$\_$8T/ and [.+-.45]$\_$2S/ separately or interchangeably. Also, the mixed case for [0]$\_$8T/ and [.+-.45]$\_$2S/ is exarm'ned to check the possibility for the improved prediction generally. The good agreement is obtained between the measured frequencies and the numerical ones. Based on the results for all the cases studied, the proposed approach has a clear potential in characterizing the mechanical properties of composite lamina.

  • A three-dimensional (3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies and mode shapes of thick, complete (not truncated) conical shells of revolution, Unlike conventional shell theories, which are mathematically two-dimensional (2-D). the present method is based upon the 3-D dynamic equations of elasticity. Displacement components $u_{r},\;u_{z},\;and\;u_{\theta}$ in the radial, axial, and circumferential directions, respectively, are taken to be sinusoidal in time, periodic in , and algebraic polynomials in the r and z directions. Potential (strain) and kinetic energies of the conical shells are formulated, the Ritz method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem, thus yielding upper bound values of the frequencies by minimizing the frequencies. As the degree of the polynomials is increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Convergence to four-digit exactitude is demonstrated for the first five frequencies of theconical shells. Novel numerical results are presented for thick, complete conical shells of revolution based upon the 3-D theory. Comparisons are also made between the frequencies from the present 3-D Ritz method and a 2-D thin shell theory.

  • It is important to make a mechanical structure precisely and reasonably in predicting the dynamic characteristics, controlling the vibration, and designing the structure dynamics. In finite element analysis model updating is appropriate as the design parameter is used to analyze the dynamic system. The errors can be contained from the physical parameters and the element modeling. From the dynamic test, more precise dynamic characteristics can be obtained. In this paper, model updating algorithm is developed using frequency difference between experiment and calculation. Modal frequencies are obtained by experiment and finite element analysis for beams with various cross section and shapes which have added masses and holes in the middle. For plates with and without groove, experiment and analyses are carried out by applying free boundary conditions as well. Mass and stiffness matrices are updated by comparing test and analytical modal frequencies. The result shows that the updated frequencies become closer to the test frequencies in case that both matrices are updated. An improved analytical model is obtained by changing model parameters such that the discrepancy between test and finite element frequencies is minimized. For beam and plate models updating of mass and stiffness matrices can improve the dynamical behavior of the model by acting on the physical parameters such as masses and stiffness.

  • A three-dimensional (3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies and mode shapes of thick, complete (circumferentially closed), circular rings with an elliptical or circular cross-section. Displacement components $u_r,\;u_\theta\;and\;u_z$ in the radial, circumferential, and axial directions, respectively, are taken to be periodic in ${\theta}$ and in time, and algebraic polynomials in the r and z directions. Potential (strain) and kinetic energies of the circular rings are formulated, and upper bound values of the frequencies are obtained by minimizing the frequencies. As the degree of the polynomials is increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Convergence to four-digit exactitude is demonstrated for the first five frequencies of the rings. Novel numerical results are presented for the circular rings having an elliptical cross-section based upon 3-D theory. Comparisons are also made between the frequencies from the present 3-D Ritz method and ones obtained from thin and thick ring theories, experiments, and another 3-D method.
