Practical Application of Defaunation of Cattle on Farms in Vietnam: Response of Young Cattle Fed Rice Straw and Grass to a Single Drench of Groundnut Oil

  • Farmers in the centre of Vietnam have a tradition of dosing young cattle with groundnut oil before fattening them on a diet of rice straw and road-side grass. These farmers claim the cattle grow faster. It was hypothesized that the effect of the oil could be to eliminate the protozoa from the rumen. This is known to increase the net microbial growth efficiency in the rumen and increase the protein supply to the animal. To test this hypothesis, two experiments were undertaken; one on-station with four cattle fitted with rumen cannulae and the second a growth trial with 25 young cattle in smallholder farms. When the cannulated animals were drenched with groundnut oil, the protozoa were eliminated from the rumen and animals could be kept free of protozoa by isolation. The ammonia concentration in the rumen fluid was decreased when the protozoa were eliminated and there was an indication of improved rumen dry matter degradability of the forage components of the diet. In the practical condition on the smallholder farms, the growth rates of cattle drenched with groundnut oil were increased considerably (65%) compared with untreated control animals. The laboratory results when taken together with the on-farm results indicate that these resource-poor farmers had been able to defaunate their cattle and to maintain the fauna-free state by isolation of their animals from extraneous stock. This traditional practice in Central Vietnam, whereby one family keeps only one or two animals that are hand fed and tethered, has quite a large potential for all of those countries where animals are fed agro-industrial by-products, as it is highly economic. The use of 1 litre of oil compared with 1 kg of rice polishing per day (300 kg over 300 days), would be highly profitable in all countries of South-East Asia.

Protein Nutritional Qualities of Fish Meat Extracts and Their Residues (양식어류 고음과 잔사의 단백질 품질평가)

  • To confirm the food quality of conventionally processed fish extracts, protein quality of boiled crucian carp(Carassius carassius) and bastard halibut(Paralichthys olivaceus) extracts and their residues were evaluated. For the both fish extracts, some of the essential amino acids were lowered significantly but two times more proline and glycine were detected in extracts than those in raw fish meats. Boiling(100oC, 5 hours) caused 1.8(crucian carp)~2.4(bastard halibut) times more total free amino acid contents in fish extracts as compared to those in original fish meats. Taurine, glutamic acid, proline, lysine, and ammonia were the predominant free amino acids released in fish extracts. In vitro digestibility of boiled fish extracts were lower at a level of 4~6% than those of raw fish meats. Fish extraction residue had a higher in vitro digestibility and had a 60% lower level of TI than that of original fish meats. 18(bastard halibut)~ 24%(crucian carp) of available lysine was reduced in boiled fish extracts but a remarkable variation was not noted between extracts and residues. PERs and NPRs of fish extracts were significantly lower than those of casein, while those values of extraction residue were slightly higher as compared to those of control(ANRC casein). In vivo apparent digestibility exhibited a similar trend to in vitro digestibility. Hematological properties in serum of rat fed with fish extracts and residue were not changed significantly but the serum cholesterol concentration were reduced in rats fed fish extraction residue comparing with those of control. These results suggest that body weight loss due to fish extracts may not affect physiological changes.

Effects of Environmental Factors on Nitrite Accumulation in a Strong Nitrogen Removal System (고농도 질소폐수 처리 공정에서 환경인자가 아질산염 축적에 미치는 영향)

  • The high concentration of N in the wastewater from livestock farming generally renders the efficiency of the wastewater treatment. Therefore, removal of N in livestock wastewater is crucial for successful treatment. The current study was conducted to investigate the optimum conditions for partial nitrification under anaerobic condition following nitritation in TPAD-BNR(two-phase anaerobic digestion-biological nitrogen removal) operating system. Sequential operating test to stimulate partial nitrification in reactor showed that partial nitrification occurred at a ratio of 1.24 in $NO_2{^-}$-N:$NH_4{^+}$-N. With this result, a wide range of factors affecting stable nitritation were examined through regression analysis. In the livestock wastewater treatment procedure, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and pH range for optimum nitrite accumulation in the reactor were 1-1.5 days and 7-8, respectively. It was appeared that accumulation of $NO_2{^-}$-N in the reactor is due to inhibition of the $NO_2{^-}$-N oxidizer by free ammonia (FA) while the effect of free nitrous acid was minimal. Nitrification was not influenced by DO concentration at a range of 2.0-3.0 mg/L and the difference in the growth rate between $NH_4{^+}$-N oxidizer and $NO_2{^-}$-N oxidizer was dependent on the temperature in the reactor.

Effect of Non- Protein Nitrogen on the Biological Utilization of Protein and the Excretion of Nitrogenous Compounds in Chicks (병아리에서 단백질의 생물적 이용성과 요중질소 화합물의 배설에 미치는 비단백태질소의 영향)

  • In order to investigate an effect of non-protein nitrogen on the biological utilization of protein, hatched single comb White Leghorn male chicks were fed for the first 8 days with a commercial chicks mash, next 6 days with protein-free diet and subsequent 6 days with protein-free diets and protein diets containing 10.59% of crude protein supplemented with 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%, respectively. During experimental feeding period, chicks fed protein-free diets had intaked gradually lower feed and had shown a similar body weight loss though urea contents were increased. When birds fed protein diets, body weight gain and feed intake were not different among birds fed the graded levels of urea although feed conversions were shown a highering tendency along with increasing urea contents. According as supplemented urea were increased, protein efficiency ratio f (PER) and net protein ratio (NPR) were increased in chicks fed protein-free diets, which were shown a lowering trend in chicks fed protein diets. Effect of supplemented urea on the urinary excretion of uric acid were not found in birds fed protein-free diets, while which were increased in birds fed protein diets with the increase of urea contents. Urea addition did not affect the excretion of total creatine in birds fed protein-free or protein diets. Excretion of ammonia was jogjered in order to increasing level of urea in birds fed protein-free diets, but which were not found any particular effect in birds fed protein diets. Also urea excretion were gradually increased with the increasing contents of urea in protein-free and protein diets. Nitrogen balance of birds fed protein-free diets were minus values, which were increased with increasing urea contents in diets. When birds fed protein diets, nitrogen balance and urinary nitrogen excretion was highered and fecal nitrogen excretion were not altered as urea levels of diets increased. Digestibility of urea nitrogen supplemented in protein-free diets were lowered along with increasing contents of urea, but biological value(BV) and net protein utilization(NPU) was found a highering tendency in birds fed protein-free diet containing 1.5% of urea. When birds fed with protein diets, digestibility, BV and NPU of protein were found a highering trend in birds fed protein diets added with 0.5% of urea.

Effects of Different Additives on Fermentation Characteristics and Protein Degradation of Green Tea Grounds Silage

  • This study evaluated the fermentation characteristics and protein degradation dynamics of wet green tea grounds (WGTG) silage. The WGTG was ensiled with distilled water (control), or lactic acid bacteria (LAB), enzyme (E), formic acid (FA) and formaldehyde (FD) prior to ensiling. Three bag silos for each treatment were randomly opened at 0, 3, 7, 14, 28 and 60 days after anaerobic storage. For all the treatments, except for FA, there was a rapid decline in pH during the first 7 days of ensiling. LAB treatment had higher lactic acid content, lower ammonia-N ($NH_3$-N) and free-amino nitrogen (FAA-N) contents than other treatments (p<0.05). E treatment had higher lactic acid, water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) and non-protein nitrogen (NPN) content than the control (p<0.05). FA treatment had higher $NH_3$-N and FAA-N content than the control (p<0.05). FD treatment had lower NPN and FAA-N content than the control, but it did not significantly inhibit the protein degradation when compared to LAB treatment (p>0.05). Results indicate that LAB treatment had the best effect on the fermentation characteristics and protein degradation of WGTG silage.

Changes in Chemical Components of Soybean Cheese Making from Cow한s Milk Added Soybean Curd (우유 첨가두부를 이용한 대두 치이즈 제조 중 화학성분의 변화)

  • In order to making the good quality soybean cheese, it is prepared byover growing cow's milk added soybean curd with Actinomucor elegans and the nold-overgrown curd soked in salt-brine/ethanol mixture. The physicochemical changes and sensory evaluation were investigated during the aging period. Crude protein, carbohydrate, crude fat ash contents of the pehtze were increased by elapsing the fermentation time, whereas moisture's decreased . Amino-N and ammonia -N contents of cow's milk added pehtze and soybean phetze were increased 17.25%, 7.23% and 16.16%, 8.42% respectively. Total nitrogen content of the pehtze was decreased by elaping the aging time but soaking solution's increased. Free amino acid content of soybean cheese was increased as a result of the proteolytic action of molds. As a result, sulfur containing amino acid such as methionine and cysteine of the cow's milk added soybean cheese were enriched 1.3 times more than the soybean cheese. Flavor, taste and texture of the cow's milk added soybean cheese were higher than soybean cheese.

  • The chemistry and performance characteristics of the EBDS process have been introduced, in which experimental results from laboratory, test plant, and pilot plant studies agree very well and can be understood from detailed kinetic models. The parametric dependencies of the NOx and $SO_2$, removal yields on the input conditions have been discussed and formulated quantitatively. The process is best suited for flue gas with high $SO_2$, loadings. The operation conditions, such as dose, ammonia, and water additions, can be adjusted fast upon load changes. The process works waste water free and the major product is a mixture of ammonium nitrate and sulfate that can be used as fertilizer. The up-date results show that the EBDS technology is safe and competitive with other already well-established technologies. Due to these interesting features, the electron beam process has gained much international recognition. Demonstration units of 100MW have been proposed in the United States and Japan. Further pilot plants are under construction in Poland and China, countries that make abundant use of highsulfur coal. Additional research activities are under way to further improve the energy efficiency of process, and accelerator prices have been decreasing during the past 10 years. So the EBDS process has a good chance to start a new generation of emission-control technology.

Nitrite Accumulation of Anaerobic Treatment Effluent of Slurry-type Piggery Waste (슬러리상 돈사폐수의 혐기성 처리수의 아질산성 질소 축적)

  • The effluent from anaerobic digestion process of slurry-type piggery waste has a characteristic of very low C/N ratio. Because of high nitrogen content, it is necessary to evaluate nitrogen removal alternative rather than conventional nitrification-denitrification scheme. In this study, two parallel treatment schemes of SBR-like partial nitritation reactor coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) reactor, and a nitritation reactor followed by nitrite denitrification process were evaluated with a slurry-type piggery waste. The feed to reactors adjusted with various $NH_4-N$ and organics concentration. The nitrite accumulation was successfully accomplished at the loading rate of about $1.0kgNH_4-N/m^3-day$. The $NO_2-N/NH_4-N$ ratio 1~2.6 in nitritated effluent that operated at HRT of 1 day indicated that SBR-like partial nitritation was applicable to ANAMMOX operation. Meanwhile, the nitrite accumulation of 87% was achieved at SBR operated with HRT of 3 days and $0.4mgO_2/L$ for denitritation. Experimental results further suggested that HRT (SRT) and free ammonia(FA) rather than DO are an effective control parameter for nitrite accumulation in piggery waste.

Characteristic of GaN Growth on the Periodically Patterned Substrate for Several Reactor Configurations (반응로 형상에 따른 주기적으로 배열된 패턴위의 GaN 성장 특성)

  • The growth of GaN on the patterned substances has proven favorable to achieve thick, crack-free GaN layers. In this paper, numerical modeling of transport and reaction of species is performed to estimate the growth rate of GaN from tile reaction of TMG(trimethly-gallium) and ammonia. GaN growth rate was estimated through the model analysis including the effect of species velocity, thermal convection and chemical reaction, and thermal condition for the uniform deposition was to be presented. The effect of shape and construction of microscopic pattern was also investigated using a simulator to perform surface analysis, and a review was done on the quantitative thickness and shape in making GaN layer on the pattern. Quantitative analysis was especially performed about the shape of reactor geometry, periodicity of pattern and flow conditions which decisively affect the quality of crystal growth. It was found that the conformal deposition could be obtained with the inclination of trench ${\Theta}>125^{\circ}$. The aspect ratio was sensitive to the void formation inside trench and the void located deep in trench with increased aspect ratio.

Nitritation Characteristics Depending on Influent Nitrogen Concentration in a Biological Aerated Filter (Biological Aerated Filter에서 유입 질소농도에 따른 아질산화 특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the nitrification characteristics of biological aerated filter (BAF) packed with ceramic media, especially focusing on nitrite build-up during nitrification. When increasing the nitrogen load above $1.63kgNH_4{^+}-N/m^3{\cdot}d$, ammonium removal efficiency decreased to less than 60% and the nitrite ratio ($NO_2{^-}-N/NO_x-N$) of higher than 75% was achieved due to the inhibitory free ammonia (FA, $NH_3-N$) concentration and oxygen limitation. FA inhibition, however, is not recommended strategy to promote nitrite build-up since FA concentration in the reactor is coupled with decreased ammonium removal efficiency. Nitrite ratio in the effluent was also affected by aeration rate and influent ammonium concentration. Ammonium oxidation was enhanced at a higher aeration rate regardless of influent ammonium concentration but, the nitrite ratio was dependent on both aeration rate and influent ammonium concentration. While a higher nitrite ratio was obtained when BAFs were fed with $50mgNH_4{^+}-N/L$ of influent, the nitrite ratio significantly decreased for a greater influent concentration of $200-300mgNH_4{^+}-N/L$. Taken together, aeration rate, influent ammonium concentration and FA concentrations kept in the BAF were found to be critical variables for nitrite accumulation in the BAF system.
