  • This study was to evaluate disinfection efficiency of chlorine and chloramine as secondary disinfectants in the distribution systems. Indicator organism, HPC in the suspended and attached were measured for copper, galvanized steel, PVC, and carbon steel pipes. For suspended microorganism, the PVC pipe was markedly dense among the assessed pipe materials. The attached microorganism was markedly equivalent roughness of pipe materials. In copper and galvanized pipes, chloramine was more effective that free chlorine to disinfect suspended microorganism in the contact time of 2 hours. The contact time for the 99% inactivation of suspended microorganism by chloramine was longer than that of free chlorine. Regardless of pipe materials, chloramine was effective on both disinfection efficiency and 99% inactivation time for attached microorganism. In conclusion, chloramine which is good disinfectant for long contact time was recommended as secondary disinfectant in distribution system.

  • The bench-scale chlorine exposure study was performed to investigate the effect of pretreatment by free chlorine and monochloramine ($NH_2Cl$) on the performance of RO membranes made of polyamide (PA). Feed monochloramination at 2mg/L did not cause significant productivity loss compared to free chlorine. However, metal coagulants reacted with monochloramine, the PA membrane suffered from a gradual loss of membrane integrity by chlorine oxidation, which was characterized as a decrease in salt rejection. Especially, RO membranes exposed to alum coagulants with monochloramine revealed the salt rejection lower than those exposed to iron coagulants. XPS membrane surface analysis demonstrated that the chlorine uptake on the membrane surface increased and carbon peaks were shifted significantly when exposed to alum coagulants with monochloramine.

  • The potential antioxidative activity of water-soluble enzymatic hydrolyzates from a kelp, Ecklonia cava was evaluated by free radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation assays. To prepare water-soluble hydrolyzates from E. cava the seaweed was enzymatically hydrolyzed by five carbohydrases (Viscozyme, Celluclast, AMG, Termamyl and Ultraflo) and five proteases (Protamex, Kojizyme, Neutrase, Flavourzyme and Alcalase). Among all the hydrolyzates, Celluclast hydrolyzate effectively scavenged free radicals released from DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2- pricrylhydrazyl) and recorded around 73% scavenging activity at the concentration of 4 mg ${\cdot}ml^{-1}$. This hydrolyzate was thermally stable and DPPH radical scavenging activity remained 80% or higher at heating temperatures of 40 and 60$^{\circ}C$ up to 12 h and around 80% at 100$^{\circ}C$ up to 8 h. AMG and Ultraflo hydrolyzate inhibited the lipid peroxidation of fish oil as that of $\alpha$-tocopherol. These results suggested that an enzymatic extraction will be an effective way for the production of a potential antioxidant from seaweeds.

  • Polystyrene/multi-walled carbon nanotube (PS/MWCNT) composites were prepared by the use of latex technology. The monodisperse PS latex was synthesized by an emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization from styrene/potassium persulfate/water system in the presence of ethanol. The MWCNTs were first treated with acid mixture to eliminate impurities, dispersed in deionized water driven by ultrasonicator, and then mixed with the PS latex. From these mixtures, PS/MWCNT composites were prepared by freeze-drying and subsequent compression molding. In the small-amplitude oscillatory shear experiments, both complex viscosity and storage modulus increased with increasing MWCNT content. A pronounced effect of MWCNT content was observed, resulting in larger storage modulus and stronger yield behavior at low frequencies when compared to unmodified PS. It showed a transition from viscous to elastic behavior with increasing MWCNT content. Over the MWCNT content of 3 wt%, the storage modulus was higher than the loss modulus across all frequencies.

  • The free vibration characteristics of the cylindrical shell submerged in water is investigated using by FEM and experiment. In the FE analysis, the fluid-structure interaction effect is concerned. The restraint condition is clamped-free. In the results, the natural frequency and mode shape characteristics are evaluated with various water height. This results are compared with those of experiment to verify the validation of the FE analysis. The change of damping ratio is also presented by experiment.

  • Finite element vibration analysis of the trial 5x5 partial fuel assembly in the still water was performed using the substructure method. ANSYS software was used as a finite element modeling and modal analysis tool. The calculated natural frequencies of the partial fuel assembly were more consistent with the experimental results for the identical test model compared to the much larger solid model. This modeling technique can be utilized for the fuel assembly dynamic behavior analysis under normal operation, seismic and loss-of-coolant-accident analysis.

  • Liquid storage rectangular tank structures are used in many fields of airplane and marine engineering. Fatigue damages are sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance. Therefore it is essentially important to estimate vibration characteristics of tank structures. Many Investigators studied the vibration of cylindrical and rectangular tank structures containing still fluid. In general, the eigenbehavior of interior liquid is characterized by the sloshing mode while that of the structure by the bulging mode. However, the structure deformation to the sloshing mode and the liquid free-surface fluctuation to the bulging mode have been neglected in the classical added-mass computation. in the present paper, we study the vibration characteristics with sloshing mode effect.

  • In this report, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and cytotoxic effects of the water extracts of Pini Resina, which has been as an additive to oral hygienic products together with sodium chloride in community, were investigated. The water extracts of Pini Resina, pretreated Pini Resina and Ramus Mori Albae-added Pini Resina all showed relatively low cytotoxicity. All samples showed concentration-dependent increase in electron-donating capacity to DPPH, especially, Ramus Mori Albae-added Pini Resina was the highest in the extent. Arachidonic acid release from the cell membrane was significantly inhibited by the presence of the samples above, among those, Ramus Mori Albae-added Pini Resina was the most effective in the inhibitory action of the release.

  • The studies was carried out to investigate ripening degree and functional properties of EMC produced with pancreatic protease and palatase ML. During production of EMC, the amounts of free amino acid and free fatty acid were increased with increasing the reaction time. The amount of total nitrogen(T-N) and water soluble nitrogen(WSN) were increased with increasing time. EMC had contents of 1.79eA T-N and 0.52o WSN at 60 min of hydrolysis time. SRI and FRI value had also a similar correlationship. On the gel filtration, 2 kinds of soluble proteining capacity was also shown in alkali solution. Furthermore the foaming stability had the same result as that of the solubility. The water absorption of EMC showed the highest level at pH 4.0 and 5.0.
