The purpose of this study was to find out the problems on the fractional distillation experiments in the middle school science textbooks based on the 6th curriculum and to suggest an efficient experiment method for the middle school students. The first step was the classification of the experiments in 8 science textbooks according to heating apparatus and liquid mixtures. The second step was doing each experiment 3 times followed by the experimental process in the textbooks. The third step was developing the alternative experiments for solving the problems found in the second step. The heating method used in the alternative experiments were direct heating, oil bath, and heating mantle. The results of the second step showed that the direct heating experiment of branched round flask was more close to the theoretical prediction than the experiment of water bath heating of branched test tube. Also the direct heating experiment of thermally insulated branched round flask was better than the result of the experiment which was not insulated. The results of the third step showed that the experiment using heating mantle regulated heating power by observing the temperature of distillate gave the closest result to the theoretical prediction. From the above results, it is concluded that the experiment using branched test-tube with water bath heating is not adequate for the fractional distillation and an alternative experiment using insulated branched round flask with heating mantle regulated heating power during experiment is recommended.
IB (immersed boundary) method is one of the prominent tool in computational fluid dynamics for the analysis of flows over complex geometries. The IB technique simplyfies the solution procedure by eliminating the requirement of complex body fitted grids and it is also superior in terms of memory requirement. In this study we have developed numerical code (FOTRAN) for the analysis of 2D flow over a cylinder using IB technique. The code is validated by comparing the wake lengths and separation angles given by Guo et. al. We employed fractional-step procedure for solving the Navier-Stokes equations governing the flow and discrete forcing IB technique for imposing boundary conditions. Also we have developed a 3D code for the backward-facing-step flow and flow over a sphere. The reattachment length in backward-facing-step flow was compared with the one given by Nie and Armaly, which has proven the validity of our code.

A laterally-averaged X-Z numerical model with transformed coordinates is developed to analyze the salinity dispersion in estuaries. Gravitational term, salinity variations with respect to the water depth. and re-evaluation of , salinity boundary condition are examined. Especially. the improvements in stability and accuracy of the numerical algorithm are made by adopting the fractional step method for the dispersion term of the governing equation. The model being applied to the Keum River Esturary, physical and numerical properties of Manning's n and dispersion coefficients are analyzed. Salinity intrusion into the river, influence of upstream river inflows, and salinity distribution for spring/neap tide are also examined.
Bifurcation of unstable symmetric flow patterns to stable asymmetric ones in laminar sudden-expansion flow has been numerically investigated. Computations were carried out for an expansion ratio of 3 and over a range of the flow Reynolds numbers by using numerical methods of second-order time accuracy and a fractional-step method that guarantees divergence-free flowfields at all times. The critical Reynolds number above which bifurcation of pitchfork type to asymmetric flow pattern takes place is lower in a flow with a higher expansion ratio, in agreement with the previously reported results. The bifurcation diagrams show that the bifurcation takes place at a Reynolds number, $Re_c = 86.3$, higher than the value that has been reported. The lower critical Reynolds number may be due to deficiencies in their computations which employed SIMPLE-type relaxation methods rather than the initial-value approach of the present study. Characteristics of the flow development during the transition to asymmetric stable flow have been investigated by using spectral analysis of the velocity signals obtained by the simulations.

Viscoelastic damping materials are widely used to reduce noise and vibration because of its low cost and easy implementation, for examples, on the body structure of passenger cars, air planes, electric appliances and ships. To design the damped structures, the material property such as elastic modulus and loss factor is essential information. The four-parameter fractional derivative model well describes the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the viscoelastic damping materials with respect to both frequency and temperature with fewer parameters than conventional spring-dashpot models. However the identification procedure of the four-parameter is very time-consuming one. An efficient identification procedure of the four-parameters is proposed by using an FE model and a gradient-based numerical search algorithm. The identification procedure goes two sequential steps to make measured FRFs coincident with simulated FRFs: the first one is a peak alignment step and the second one is an amplitude adjustment. A numerical example shows that the proposed method is efficient and robust in identifying the viscoelastic material parameters of fractional derivative model.
In the present study, a parallel Taylor-Galerkin/level set based two-phase flow code was developed using finite element discretization and domain decomposition method based on MPI (Message Passing Interface). The proposed method can be utilized for the analysis of a large scale free surface problem in a complex geometry due to the feature of FEM and domain decomposition method. Four-step fractional step method was used for the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and Taylor-Galerkin method was adopted for the discretization of hyperbolic type redistancing and advection equations. A Parallel ILU(0) type preconditioner was chosen to accelerate the convergence of a conjugate gradient type iterative solvers. From the present parallel numerical experiments, it has been shown that the proposed method is applicable to the simulation of large scale free surface flows.
A fractional step finite difference model for the longitudinal dispersion of nonconservative contaminants is developed. It is based on splitting the longitudinal dispersion equation into a set of three equations each to be solved over a one-third time step. The fourth-order Holly-Preissmann scheme, an analytic solution, and the Crank-Nicholson scheme are used to solve the equations for the pure advection, the first-order decay, and the diffusion, respectively. To test the model, it is applied to simulate the longitudinal dispersion of continuous source released into a nonuniform flow field as well as the dispersion of an instantaneous source in a uniform flow field. The results are compared with the exact solution and those computed by an existing model. Compared to the existing model which uses Euler method for the first-order decay equation, the present model yield more accurate results as the decay coefficient increases.
In the present study, a CFD program based on a finite volume method was developed by using an unstructured polyhedral grid system for the accurate simulation with the complex geometry of computational domain. To simulate the transient flow induced by the moving solid object, the program used a fractional step method and a ALE (Algebric Lagrangian-Eulerian) method. The grid deformation for the moving of solid object were performed with a spring analogy based on the center coordinate of each computational grid. To verify the present program with these methodologies, the numerical results of the flow around the fixed and oscillating circular cylinder were compared with the previous numerical results.

Flow characteristics of the fluid laden with many particles in the two-dimensional channel are investigated using the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the equation of motion of particles by direct numerical simulation. A four-step fractional step method with Crank-Nicolson scheme and ALE technique is used for P2P1 mixed finite element method. The motion and distribution of particles in the fluid is virtually described as a result of direct numerical simulation and the increase of viscosity is compared with theoretical equations. The effect of channel height on the relative viscosity and the tubular pinch effect are discussed.
This paper presents how redevelopment of the boundary layer in a backward-facing step flow is affected by boundary conditions imposed on velocity at the inlet, top and exit of the flow. A two-dimensional, laminar, incompressible flow over a backward-facing step with an open top boundary has been computed by using numerical methods of second-order time and spatial accuracy and a fractional-step method that guarantees a divergence-free velocity field at all time. The inlet velocity profile above the step is of Blasius type. Along the top boundary, shear-tree and Dirichlet conditions on the streamwise velocity were considered and at the exit fully-developed and convective boundary conditions were examined. (The vertical velocity at all boundaries were assumed to be zero explicitly or implicitly.) From the computed flow fields, the reattachment on the bottom side of shear layer separated from the tip of the step and succeeding redevelopment of the boundary layer were investigated.
