  • The development of non-precious metal based electrocatalysts is highly desired for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as alternates to noble metal based ORR electrocatalysts. Herein, we report mononulcear copper(II) complex $[CuLbpy]ClO_4$ (L=4-[(2-hydroxyphenylimino)methyl]benzoic acid) containing poly(allylamine.HCl) polymer (PAlACuLbpy) as an electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). PAlACuLbpy was mixed with poly(acrylic acid) and tetraethylortho silicate to prepare a composite and then deposited on the screen printed electrode surface. The modified electrode (PAlACuLbpy/PCE) is highly stable and showed a quasi-reversible redox behavior with $E_{1/2}=-0.2V$ vs. Ag/AgCl(3 M KCl) in 0.1 M phosphate buffer at pH 7 under argon atmosphere. PAlACuLbpy/PCE exhibited a remarkable ORR activity with an onset potential of -0.1 V vs Ag/AgCl in 0.1 M PB (pH 7) in the presence of oxygen. The kinetics for ORR was studied by rotating disk voltammetry in neutral aqueous medium and the results indicated that the number of electrons involving in the ORR is four and the conversion products are water and hydrogen peroxide.

  • In this study, the characteristics of turbulent flow and collection efficiency for an one-stage electrostatic precipitator(ESP) with slit type collecting electrode for urban railway underground tunnels were obtained using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) commercial code FLUENT 6.3 and lab-scale experiments. The electrostatic precipitator was operated under high gas velocity(3~12m/s). Five different designs of collecting electrode, flat plate-type and a slit-type of 3mm, 5mm, 7mm and 10mm slit width and four various gas velocity(3, 6, 9, and 12m/s) were used and applied. A standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model in CFD commercial code FLUENT 6.3 was used for flow simulation. The flow simulation results showed that the turbulent intensity of flat plate-type was higher than slit-type under all gas velocity conditions and also the turbulent intensity of flat plate-type was increased continuously, but in case of slit-type was maintained at constant range. And, the turbulent intensity was decreased according to increasing of slit width. The experimental results showed that the collection efficiency of slit-type was higher than flat plate-type under all gas velocity conditions. And, over 6m/s gas velocity condition, the collection efficiency of 5mm and 7mm was highest, when compared to 3mm and 10mm.

  • Five kinds of modified electrode arrays were proposed to overcome the weak points of the commonly used arrays using dipole and/or pole in two-dimensional resistivity surveys. The modified pole-pole array was suggested to overcome the inefficiency caused by distant earthing in pole-pole array. Four kinds of modified arrays using dipole were designed to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of the conventional dipole-dipole and pole-dipole arrays through boosting up the measured potential difference. In the numerical experiments using the two-dimensional modeling and inversion, the effects of the ambient electrical noise and the resolving power were examined and the results showed the validity of the modified arrays proposed in this study.

  • The direct electrochemical studies of four laccases (plant and fungal laccases) have been investigated on a gold electrode functionalized with a new tether of 2.2'-dithiosalicylic aldehyde. Results from these studies indicate that the redox potential of the active site of plant laccase from Rhus vernificera is shifted to a more negative value(255 mV versus SCE) than that of fungal laccase from Pyricularia oryzae (480 mV versus SCE). Mechanistic studies indicate that the reduction of type-1 Cu precedes the reduction of type-2 and type-3 Cu ions when the electrode is poised initially at different potentials. Also a new tether, 2.2'-dithiosalicylic aldehyde, has been used to study the redox properties of two laccases (LCCI and Lccla) covalently attached to a gold electrode. An irreversible peak at 0.47V vs. SCE is observed in the cyclic voltammorams of LCCI. In contrast, the cyclic voltammograms of LCCIa contain a quasi-reversible peak at 0.18V vs. SCE and an irreversible peak at 0.50V vs. SCE. We find that the replacement of the eleven amino acids a the C-terminus with a single cysteine residue $(i.e., \;LCCI{\rightarrow}LCCIa)$ influences the rate of heterogeneous electron transfer between an electrode and the copper containing active sites $(K_{het}\;for\;LCCI=1.0\times10^{-2}\;s^{-1}\;and\;K_{het}\;for\;LCCI_a= 1.0\;times10^{-1}\;s^{-1}\'at\;0.18V\;versus\;SCE\;and\;4.0\times10^{-2}\;s^{-1}\;at\;0.50V\; versus\;SCE)$. These results show for the first time that the change of the primary structure of a protein via site-directed mutagenesis influences both the redox potentials of the copper ions in the active site and the rate of heterogeneous electron transfer.

  • Rapid industrial development has led to a serious problem of pollution in the industrial sector. With the increasing social need for environmental protection, research on air pollution prevention equipment for reducing pollutants in industrial processes is actively being undertaken. The deterioration of existent, installed facilities, their increased emission rates, and the strengthening of the effluent quality standards make complying with permissible emission standards difficult. In fact, installing new electric precipitators or complementing existent facilities is inevitable. The expansion and complementation of the installed electrical precipitators have led to improvements in dust collection efficiency, shorter working times, and lower costs. Because of its easy installation and simple manufacturing process, the production method with the discharge electrode of an electric precipitator is widely used. The following conclusions were reached by classifying discharge electrodes into four types based on the production method and mutually comparing them by their dust collection efficiency. None of the four types used in this study were damaged by impact. However, we were able to confirm some strain from the compression sites of both type A and type B. Both type B and type C are expected to have greater dust collection efficiencies than the other models due to their large vibration transmissibility. Moreover, the high vibrational energy is expected to cause rapping damage during its operation. Particularly, in the case of type B, some of the strain was found at the end of the compression site. The coupling schemes of both type C and type D are out of vibration transmissibility. On the other hand, the ability to maintain straightness and solidity of the side is regarded as outstanding and stable. Type D has outstanding on-site workability, considering the presence of locking, structural stability, and work conditions. From these experiments, we determined that type C is the most ideal connection method of discharge electrode, considering its construction period of renovation. Type C is inferior to type D with regard to on-site workability. However, type C has outstanding dedusting transmission with regard to the straightness, solidity maintenance, and vibration of shearing stress.

  • Objective: To investigate the association among the electrode placement method, electrode type, and local tumor progression (LTP) following percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for small hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) and to assess the risk factors for LTP. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, we enrolled 211 patients, including 150 males and 61 females, who had undergone ultrasound-guided RFA for a single HCC < 3 cm. Patients were divided into four combination groups of the electrode type and placement method: 1) tumor-puncturing with an internally cooled tip (ICT), 2) tumor-puncturing with an internally cooled wet tip (ICWT), 3) no-touch with ICT, and 4) no-touch with ICWT. Univariable and multivariable Cox proportional-hazards regression analyses were performed to evaluate the risk factors for LTP. The major RFA-related complications were assessed. Results: Overall, 83, 34, 80, and 14 patients were included in the ICT, ICWT, no-touch with ICT, and no-touch with ICWT groups, respectively. The cumulative LTP rates differed significantly among the four groups. Compared to tumor puncturing with ICT, tumor puncturing with ICWT was associated with a lower LTP risk (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 0.11, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0-0.88, P = 0.034). However, the cumulative LTP rate did not differ significantly between tumor-puncturing with ICT and no-touch RFA with ICT (aHR = 0.34, 95% CI = 0.03-1.62, P = 0.188) or ICWT (aHR = 0.28, 95% CI = 0-2.28, P = 0.294). An insufficient ablative margin was a risk factor for LTP (aHR = 6.13, 95% CI = 1.41-22.49, P = 0.019). The major complication rates were 1.2%, 0%, 2.5%, and 21.4% in the ICT, ICWT, no-touch with ICT, and no-touch with ICWT groups, respectively. Conclusion: ICWT was associated with a lower LTP rate compared to ICT when performing tumor-puncturing RFA. An insufficient ablation margin was a risk factor for LTP.

  • A long-term variation of electrode polarization in the MCFC has been analyzed successfully using a single cell with a Au, $CO_2/O_2$ reference electrode Four different cells with different components were operated and their electrode polarizations were analyzed. As published in the literatures, the cathode polarization was larger than that of the anode. The more stable operation of a single cell with the Al-coated cell frame up to 6,000hrs indicates that the corrosion at the cell frame, particularly wet seal area, plays an important role to determine the lifetime of a MCFC. At the initial stage of the cell operation, the voltage of the cell using a cathode stabilized by the $LiCoO_2$ coating was relatively low due to the high cathode polarization. As the cell was operated and the stabilized cathode was lithiated sufficiently, the cathode polarization decreased and the cell voltage was recovered. It was observed that the voltage of the cell using the $Li_2CO_3/Na_2CO_3$ electrolyte fluctuated with operation time and the cathode polarization fluctuated along with the cell voltage quite similarly. Although the mechanisms of the voltage fluctuation were not clear yet, the results imply that the voltage fluctuation was related with a reaction in the cathode side. After testing every single cell, the cathode polarization increased with the steep decrease in the cell voltage. Thus, the cathode should be improved in order to develop more durable MCFC.

  • In this study, we have evaluated the effect of amplitude and frequency perturbation of EGG signal during single vowels associated with laryngeal pathology. The normal EGG signal is properly characterized by an autoregressive model which has the optimal order of ninth using the parametric method. This can be analyzed by determining the transfer function. Perturbations in the fundamental pitch and in the peak amplitude of EGG signal derived with a four-electrode system using the modulation/demodulation techniques were investigated for the purpose of developing a decision criteria for the laryngeal function identification.
