The production and decomposition rates of litters were studied in three mountains, Mt. Halla, Mt. So-back and Mt. Tae-back. The amounts of N, P, K, Ca and Na in the soils were measured and the relationships between the mineral nutrients and decay rates were reserched, The annual litter production was the most as $1, 077.3g/m^2$ and the least as $248.0g/m^2$ in a stand of Quercus acutissima at 820m of the Mt. So-back and at 1, 350m of the Mt. So-back among the study sites, respectively. The decay rates of litter was the highest as k=0.448 and the lowest as k=0.082 in a stand of Q. acutissima at 820m of the Mt. So-back and at 1, 450m of the Mt. Tae-back at 1, 450m of the Mt. Tae-back among the study sites. The higher altitude was, the slower the decay rates were. The annual contents of mineral nutrient and their amounts inputted into the forest soil were proportional to the decay rate of organic metters.

During the summer season, more than half of the annual precipitation in Korea occurs during the summer season due to the geographical location in the Asian monsoon belt. So, this causes severe soil erosion from croplands, which is directly linked to the deterioration of crop/land productivity and surface water quality. Therefore, much attention has been given to develop accurate estimation tools of soil erosion. The aim of this study is to assess the performance of using the empirical Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and the physical-based model of the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) to quantify eroded amount of soil from agricultural fields. Input data files, including climate, soil, slope, and cropping management, were modified to fit into Korean conditions. Chuncheon (forest) and Jeonju (level-plain) were selected as two Korean cities with different topographic characteristics for model analysis. The results of this current study indicated that better soil erosion prediction can be achieved using the WEPP model since it has better power to illustrate a higher degree of spatial variability than USLE in topography, precipitation, soils, and crop management practices. These present findings are expected to contribute to the development of the environmental assessment program as well as the conservation of the agricultural environment in Korea.

In order to investigate geochemical behaviors of artificial radionuclide($^{137}$ Cs), the fallout deposition of arificial radioisotope($^{137}$ Cs) was measured from May to October in 1994 at the Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute(KORDI), Ansan, Kyunggido, Korea. And to study radioisotopic behavior and cumulative action in soil, soil samples were collected from Kwang-Leung Forest, Kyunggidom and artificial radioisotope ($^{137}$ Cs) and natural radioisotope($^{210}$ Pb) were identified. The amount of $^{137}$ Cs in atmosphere collected by wet deposition process in May was found to be 4.95 to 11.96mBq m$^{-2}$ whereas the amounts of $^{137}$ Cs by dry deposition process in May and October were found to be 4.0mBq g$^{-1}$ and 3.0mBq g$^{-1}$ , respectively. The amount of $^{137}$ Cs accumulated in soil was measured to be 311mBq cm$^{-2}$ , which contained 83% of the total inputs from atmospheric fallout (374 mBq cm$^{-2}$ ) since 1960s. In addition, the accumulation rate and the annual flux of $^{210}$ Pb into soils were 0.32cm yr$^{-1}$ and 34 mBq cm$^{-2}$ yr$^{-1}$ , respectively. Conclusively, it was found that arificial radioisotopes were mainly from the stratosphere and soil resupension of continental China through the troposphere.
The study was conducted to make a map for selecting righteous tree species for each site by digital terrain analysis. We set an algorithmic value for each tree species' characteristics with distribution pattern analysis, and the soil types were digitized from data indicated on soil map. Mean altitude, slope, aspect and micro-topography were estimated from the digital map for each block which had been calculated by regression equations with altitude. The results obtained from the study could be summarized as follows 1. We could develope a method to select righteous tree species for a given site with concern of soil, forest condition and topographic factors on Muju-Gun in Chonbuk province(2,500ha) by the terrain analysis and multi-variate digital map with a personal computer. 2. The brown forest soils were major soil types for the study area, and 29 tree species were occurred with Pinus densiflora as a dominant species. The differences in site condition and soil properties resulted in site quality differences for each tree species. 3. We tried to figure out the accuracy of a basic program(DTM.BAS) enterprised for this study with comparing the mean altitude and aspect calculated from the topographic terrain analysis map and those from surveyed data. The differences between the values were less than 5% which could be accepted as a statistically allowable value for altitude, as well as the values for aspect showed no differences between both the mean altitude and aspect. The result may indicate that the program can be used further in efficiency. 4. From the righteous-site selection map, the 2nd group(R, $B_1$) took the largest area with 46% followed by non-forest area (L) with 23%, the 5th group with 7% and the 4th group with 5%, respectively. The other groups occupied less than 6%. 5. We suggested four types of management tools by silvicultural tree species with considering soil type and topographic conditions.
For the agricultural utilization of Korean forest land resources, which constitutes most of country, the distribution of environment and soil physico-chemical properties of establishable grass lands were clarified. The surveyed data were analized for the reasonable utilization and management of establishable grass land. The results were as follows ; 1. About 50.2% of the grass lands to be established were located under the 200m in altitude. The higher the altitude was, the more the organic matter content. 2. Tall type grass species such as Miscanthus purpurascens, Purple eulalia, and Themeda Japonica covered 71.3% of the natural vegetation in the soils of grass land to be established. 3. The extent of sandy and clayey soils which might be limited in the establishment of grassland was only 3.3%, meanwhile majority of the soils were in the favourable condition for grassland that is about 94% have more than 20cm in available soil depth and about 60.5% of the soils have less than 10% of gravels and stones in the soil profiles. 4. The chemical properties of the prearranged grassland soils were worse than the established grasslands, especially in the content of available $P_2O_5$. 5. The amount of fertilizer recommended for meadow were 286kg of nitrogen per hectare, 271kg of phosphorus, 224kg of potassium and 2040kg of calcium per hectare, but for grazing land were 201, 204, 136 and 1920kg/ha respectively.

This study is focused on the cultivation of seedlings and cuttings of roundleaf chastetree(Vitex rotundifolia L. f.) according to the sorts of soil and fertilization methods. The results are summarized as follows: When roundleaf chastetree seedlings(aged 1-0) and cuttings(aged 1-0) were cultivated in three different kinds of soil- sand, granite soil, and yellow silt- without any fertilization, 70% of the seedlings survived in sand and granite soil, and 35% did in yellow silt; 90% of the cuttings survived in granite soil and 80% did in sand and yellow silt. The general growth of both seedlings and cuttings was good in granite soil, and sand but relatively inferior in yellow silt. Seedlings showed good stem growth while cuttings had fine root growth. In case of cultivation of seedlings with different kinds and quantities of fertilizer adjusted and with granite soil as basic soil, seedlings and cuttings survived in the experimental section where only the organic fertilizer was used as basic fertilization; in contrast, seedlings grown in the experimental section were all dead where both inorganic and liquefied fertilizer were used. Cuttings showed considerably higher survival rates than seedlings at the experimental fertilization section; particularly, the survival rate of cuttings was twice as much as that of seedlings at the experimental section with low fertilization. This study results revealed that cuttings are desirable than seedlings in general rootage, growth, adaptability to soil, and cuttings have lower demand for soil fertility in time of growing roundleaf chastetree saplings.
This study was carried out to investigate the relationship of occurrence and distribution of Eupatorium rugosum by forest types and soil characteristics in Mt. Namsan in Seoul, Korea. E. rugosum is designated as a harmful non-indigenous plant in ecosystem by the Natural Environment Conservation Act in Korea. E. rugosum grew along roadside and in valleys with some favorable light conditions. E. rugosum occurred in aggregations under Pinus densiflora and Robinia pseudoacacia communities. And it was sparse in forests of Quercus mongolica and P. koraiensis. The representative herb layer species were Oplismenus undulatifolius, and Parthenocissus tricuspidata in the E. rugosum communities. There was a significantly negative correlation between the coverage of E. rugosum and the coverage of tree layer. However, the result of ANOVA of E. rugosum coverage by dominant species of tree layers did not show a significant difference (p>0.05). The level of soil moisture content, organic content, and pH, was slightly higher in communities with E. rugosum than without, but it was statistically non-significant difference. However, it was found that the coverage of E. rugosum was very significantly negative correlated with the depth of top soil profile (litter and fermentation layer, p<0.05).

This study was conducted to assess the physiological tolerance of native tree species for successful restoration and revegetation of abandoned coal-mine spoils. Study sites were two coal-mine spoils (Sododong and Ssarijae) in Taebaek, Kangwon Province, Korea. Five individuals of Betula costata and of B. schmidtii were analyzed for malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O$$_2$) content, nitrate reductase (NR) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and for carbohydrate concentration in the leaves. Trees in the abandoned coal-mine spoils were influenced by deficiencies expressed by MDA and $H_2O$$_2$ content in the leaves of two species being higher at the coal-mine spoils than in the surrounding forest. Low NR activity indirectly represented nitrogen deficiency in the soil of the coal-mine spoils; an unmanageable SOD activity implied that tolerant functions didn't net against a certain stress of the coal-mine spoils. Decreased glucose and increased starch concentration especially showed the inhibition of the carbohydrate metabolism by inadequate factors. Consequently, low nitrogen content in the real-mine soils might increase damage in trees as a result of inhibiting the expression of tolerance mechanisms against stress. Therefore, trees in coal-mine spoils need ample nitrogen to use as a metabolic energy source in order to prevent damage and increase tolerance against stress.
The objective of this study was to determine the rate of nitrogen mineralization at clearcut and uncut in oak(Quercus rubra L.) and pine(Pinus resinosa Ait.) stands. The study sites were located in northern Lower Michigan, U.S.A. Nitrogen mineralization rates in the top 15cm of mineral soil were examined during the 1991 and 1992 growing seasons(May-October) using an in situ buried tag technique. diet nitrogen mineralization in oak stands over the course of both growing seasons was 67kg/ha in the clearcut and 30kg/ha in the uncut stands. In contrast, net nitrogen mineralization in pine stands was 27kg/ha and 13kg/ha for the same treatments. Total net nitrogen mineralization rates were always higher in oak stands than in pine stands. Extractable $NO_3^-$ before and after one month soil incubation in both oak and pine stands was generally not detectable in the uncut stands, but in the pine clearcut treatment(nitrification over the course of both growing seasons : 3.3kg/ha). The results indicated that : 1) substantial increases in the amount of available soil nitrogen occurred following clearcuts in both stands : and 2) the loin rates of nitrification may be an important mechanism for retention of nitrogen in both oak and pine stands.
Soil pH change is an important factor which determines soil chemical properties. It is an indicator of the effect of urban environmental pollution on soils and plant growth. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of air pollution on the soil of Seoul urban forests during the course of the air pollution being dipersed toward suburb area. Study sites were divided into four sections of concentric circles with 5km interval. Soil samples were collected from A and B horizons in the urban forests, and analyzed for soil pH, soil buffer capacity, cation exchange capacity, and base saturation. Soil pH ranged from 3.96 to 5.08 for A horizon and from 4.10 to 5.25 for B horizon, which were not significantly different among the sections. However, there was a trend of soil pH lowered at the sections close to the urban center. Soil buffer capacity was lower at 0-5km and 5-10km sections compared to that at the outer sections. Cation exchange capacity and base saturation were not different significantly among the sections. Following the pattern of air pollutants being dispersed from urban center to suburb, soil acidification was observed at the urban forests in Seoul area. Low level of soil buffer capacity toward the urban center was an indicator of soil acidification at the urban forests.
