Larvae of Monochamus saltuarius showed normal growth and development on conifers of Pinus koraiensis, P. densiflora, Abies holophylla, Larix leptolepsis, P. bungeana, and P. rigida, respectively, but the conifers influenced significantly the body weight and the survival rate of larvae. Though the larval body weights were in a wide spectrum among treatments, growth curves of them were very similar from each other, showing continuous increase from the early larval stage to about 3 months old. The body weight was decreased slightly after the feeding period of the early 3 months. The size of larvae and adults became the largest from P. bungeana fed larvae. The mid-sized ones were from P. koraiensis, P. densiflora and A. holophylla. Small ones came from L. leptolepsis and P. rigida. The larval growth was retarded without water supply. Overall survival rates from the early stage of a larva to a fertile adult were 53.6% from P. koraiensis; 51.8%, P. densiflora; 34.7%, A. holophylla; 17.8%, P. bungeana; 16.7%, L. leptolepsis; and 12.3%, P. rigida. Adults from larvae fed the 6 species of conifers, respectively, were grown into the reproductively potent adults, which laid viable eggs. A few of overwintered larvae did not pupate and remained still as a larva until the late October of the year. Data from the field survey, the head width emerged from P. koraiensis was larger than that of L. leptolepsis. The adult emergence hole in P. koraiensis was larger also. While, the size of the emergence hole was larger in the artificially innoculated log of P. koraiensis, which was kept for a larva to be with a minimized food competition and sufficient water supply, than that of the field.
Pine wilt disease (PWD) caused by pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, has become the most serious threat to pine trees in Korea. This study was subjected to investigate effective biological control agent against PWD. To select nematocidal bacteria against PWD, Bacillus licheniformis MH48 was selected among five bacteria due to its high nematocidal potential. B. licheniformis MH48 was tested for cell growth and protease activity to evaluate its nematicidal potential. In the B. licheniformis MH48, cell numbers were highest three days after incubation, while protease activity was highest after seven days. In the effect of different concentrations of B. licheniformis MH48 culture broth against B. xylophilus, 20% concentration of culture broth showed approximately 80% of pine wood nematode mortality compared to the control. Especially, pine wood nematode's cuticle layers were degraded two days after treatment of B. licheniformis MH48 culture broth. The present study suggests that B. licheniformis MH48 can be one of the potential biocontrol candidates against pine wood nematode due to its ability to produce protease.
The study has been carried to investigate a possibility to control several major insect pest of forest by microbial pathogens existing in nature as one of the biological control measure. Microorganisms including polyhedral virus isolated from diseased fall webworm were total of 4 kinds pathogenic microbes among these 4 kinds were polyhedral virus and Bacillus .species. Control effect of these two pathogens appeared to be $70.6\%$ and $49.5\%$, respectively, when they were compared with those of control plot that was $27.8\%$. Each one of bacterium species and fungus species were isolated from diseased Japanese alder leaf beetle. Pathogenisity to the healthy beetle was recognized by the fungus species, while the bacterium showed none of pathogenisity. The fungus was identified as Beauveria sp. and its effect on the beetle control was $96.2\%$ while untreated plot showed $49.2\%$ of dead beetles in the same period. Fifteen species of microbes were isolated from diseased larvae of pine gall midge. Six species out of 15 showed certain level of insecticidal effect to the larvae of the insects. The highest efficiency was showed by a fungus species, Fusarium sp. and was followed by Bacillus SP. I, Spicaria sp. pathogens isolated from larvae of pine gall midge did not affected to both of Japanese alder leaf beetles and fall webworms in any means.

The 21 strains of Korean entomopathogenic nematodes, {Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Hamyang strain(HbH), Heterorhabditis sp. 202, 205, 217, Heterorhabdiris sp. KCTC 0991BP strain, Steinernema carpocapsae Pocheon(ScP), S. longicaudum Gonaju, S. longicaudum Nonsan, Steinernema sp. 7,24, 52, 55, 60, 64, 206, 207, 209, 210, 219, and 227 strain} were evaluated for the control of a turfgrass insect pest, Exomala orientalis. Heterorhabditis spp. showed higher pathogenicity than Steinernema spp. against 3rd instar larvae of E. orientalis with $55\%$ mortality by Heterorhabditis sp. 202 strain and $50\%$ by HbH and Heterorhabditis sp.205 strain at the rate of 200 infective juveniles per larva 14 days later after treatment. The number of infective juveniles of Korean entomopathogenic nematodes in 3rd instar larvae of E. orientalis was higher in Heterorhabditis spp. than in Steinernema spp.. In general, numbers of produced infective juveniles of three species were much higher, i.e., Heterorhabditis sp.202 strain produced 273,064 infective juveniles, S. carpocapsae Pocheon strain 273,043, and Heterorhabditis sp. 217 strain 248,887, respectively.

Three Korean isolates of entomopathogenic nematodes, Steinernema carpocapsae KCTC 0981BP (ScK), S. glaseri Dongrae (SgD), and Heterorhabditis sp. KCTC 0991BP (HsK), were evaluated for the control of a turfgrass pest, Popillia quadriguttata. Three days after treatment, all nematodes showed high pathogenicity to adult P. quadriguttata with $97.5\%$ mortality by ScK, $90.8\%$ by HsK, and $80\%$ by SgD at the concentration of 900 infective juveniles per adult. Nematode attachment and infection rate to adult P. quadriguttata were various depending on nematode species and inoculation density. The rate of nematode attachment was $90.8\%$ in HsK, $90.6\%$ in SgD, and $35\%$ in ScK, resfectively at the concentration of 900 infective juveniles per adult. The infection rate that represents the rate of detected nematode from inside insect of body was $97.5\%$ in ScK, $ 80\%$ in both HsK and SgD at the 900 concentration of infected juveniles. The infection rate, however, was decreased to $27.5\%$ in ScK, $72.5\%$ in SgD, but no nematodes was detected in HsK at the concentration of 90 infective juveniles.

Moths were collected to survey turfgrass pest and to compare species diversity from Jinju Country Club in Jinju, Gyeongsangnamdo, Korea, every 10 days using 200W mercury light trap from middle May to late October in 2008. As the results, only 23 individuals of Pseudaletia separata, Spodoptera depravata, Spodoptera litura, Agrotis segetum, and Agrotis ipsilon were collected as turf grass insect pests. However, 2028 individuals of 388 species in 22 families were collected in total. Dominant species was Culcula panterinaria, Fentonia ocypete, Hypsopygia regina, Culcula panterinaria, Flavocrambus striatellus, and Diarsia camescens in May, June, July, August, September and October, respectively. Species diversity was not different between two surveyed sites, but different among surveyed time. Species richness was more higher in hole 11 (Hole was surrounded by natural forest and located near pond) than hole 15 (Hole was located at the top part of mountain). Dominance index of moth was increased from October compared with diverse index and richness index were decreased from October. A large number of species and individuals were recorded in Noctuidae (502 individuals in 131 species), Geometridae (491 individuals in 84 species), Pyralidae (386 individuals in 73 species), and Notodontidae (277 individuals in 25 species). These four families were 80.9% out of all the collected species.
The aim of this study was to investigate the anatomical characteristics of Quercus mongolica infested by oak wilt disease. To analysis the anatomical characteristics of the wood specimens infested by the oak wilt, the anatomical structures of an infected wood, a dead wood, and sound wood were observed at 10-year-old intervals from 10 to 50 annual rings using both an optical and a scanning electron microscope. The fiber length was measured in units of 5 annual rings from the pith, and the diameter of the vessel element and the ratio of the vessel including the tyloses were measured for each 10 annual ring. In the cross section, on the infected and dead wood specimens, mycelium was also observed with the tyloses in the vessel. There was no signification difference between the wood specimens in the fiber length and the vessel diameter of the vessel element. The fiber length was not difference after 20-30 annual rings which is a part of juvenile wood. The average of the vessel ratio including tyloses in the infected wood was the highest. Especially, the ratio of tyloses was the highest 40-50 annual rings in the infected wood and the dead wood. Therefore, the large difference between the infested wood by oak wilt and the sound wood was the ratio of tyloses. This result can be used as a basic data to utilize the infested wood.
To examine the sex morph, heterodichogamy, fruiting characteristics and seed viabilities of Acer palmatum, sixty three planted trees were monitered in Wonju-si for two years in terms of their sex morph, flowering and fruiting habit. Most flowers of A. palmatum are pollinated by Apis mellifera, Helophilus virgatus, a few (3.57%) are pollinated by wind. Twenty four trees (42.9%) in 2010, and twenty trees (31.7%) in 2011 were proved protandrous (PA: pollen is shed before stigmas are receptive), thirty two (50.8%) in 2010, thirty trees (47.6%) in 2011 were proved protogynous (PG: stigmas are receptive before pollen is shed). This result means that Acer palmatum has heterodichogamous sexual system. Five trees (7.9%) have changed their sex morphs; 4 trees change the sex morp PA to PG, and one does the sex morph PG to PA. Rates of sound seeds and decayed seeds were significantly different between sex morphs. Rates of sound seeds were 51.6% (2010) and 64.0% (2011) in PA, but 30.4% (2010) and 40.4% (2011) in PG. and rates of decayed seeds did 40.0% (2010) and 31.2% (2011) in PA, but 65.6% (2010) and 56.8% (2011) in PG. The differences of decayed seeds' rates between sex morphs might be related with the timing of insect pests' outbreak.
This study was performed to investigate the antagonistic properties of mushroom strains against Korean oak wilt pathogen (Raffaelea quercus-mongolicae) by assessing their predominance on potato dextrose agar plates after pairing culture. Among the total of 158 strains of mushroom tested, thirty-three strains showed no antagonistic activities against the pathogen in both the short term (6~7 days) and long term (27~31 days). Ninety-six strains of tested mushrooms had a weak or no long term antagonistic activity. The antagonistic activities of 29 strains were higher than those of other strains with the levels of $\geq$ R+ and $\geq$ R for short and long term, respectively. We found that these strains with antagonistic activities against R. quercus-mongolicae belong to the species of mushrooms living on different host plants such as conifers, oaks and other broad-leaved trees. In order to use the trees damaged by Korean oak wilt as a resource(bed-log) for cultivating mushrooms, seven strains of antagonist 29 strains were selected as follows; Laetiporus sulphureus KFRI 654, Laetiporus miniatus KFRI 914, Lentinula edodes KFRI 269 and 764, Pycnoporus coccineus KFRI 588, Schizophyllum commune KFRI 832 and Trametes versicolor KFRI 100.

In 2006, pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, was isolated from about 50 years old trees of Pinus densiflora and P. koraiensis showing leaf-wilt and -drying symptoms in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do and Chuncheon, Gangwon-do. Isolation of pinewood nematodes from sapwood of infected pine trees showed no difference in population density between tree species and among the sampling heights on the main stem. Migration of pinewood nematodes in the host tree were investigated by inoculation of red pine (P. densiflora, 3 years old) seedlings with B. xylophilus. The nematodes seemed to move in red pine seedlings prior to multiplication and it might have taken about 20 days to start multiplication and expression of symptoms including wilt and dieback. In initial time after inoculation, nematodes started migration through the cortical resin canal from inoculated site and further showed upward and downward movements. More nematodes were observed in cortical resin canal during early period of inoculation and later in resin canal of xylem and tracheid also while, the pith still remained free from nematode. The density of B. xylophilus was higher in seedlings of low-vigor with poor root growth than in seedlings of normal root growth. Seedlings showing high density of B. xylophilus exhibited stem discoloration and secondary infection by fungus at the inoculation site.
