  • Recently, the number of students to choose to study in Australia has been increasing significantly. The purpose of this study is to examine how Korean primary school children perceive their own English language learning and cultural adaptation in Australia. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 34 Korean children aged 8-13 who were attending primary schools in Brisbane, Queensland. The study results show that they made diverse efforts to learn English language and culture in Australia, such as making English-speaking friends, watching TV/video/DVD, reading English books, and studying with a foreign tutor. Their English listening and writing abilities were thought to be improved most, followed by speaking, reading and cultural understanding after studying in Australia. The subjects were mostly satisfied with their study and life in Australia but they had difficulties with communicating in English, homesickness, foods, weather, insects, and discrimination. In particular, they had problems with understanding classes conducted all in English and participating in the classroom activities due to their low level of English ability and understanding of Australian classroom culture. The findings of this study have pedagogical implications for educators both in Australia and Korea.

  • Globus pharyngeus or globus sensation is the painless sensation of a lump in the throat and may be described as a foreign body sensation, a tightening or choking feeling. It is often associated with persistent clearing of the throat, chronic cough, hoarseness, and catarrh. Its etiology remains unclear ; however, laryngopharyngeal reflux may play a role in a subset of patients. Psychogenic problems have often been thought to cause or trigger the globus sensation. Personality studies have found higher levels of alexithymia, neuroticism, and psychological distress (including anxiety, low mood, and somatic concerns) and lower levels of extraversion in patients presenting with globus. Globus patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux exhibited weaker psychological symptoms than non- laryngopharyngeal reflux globus patients, and globus patients who did not respond to proton pump inhibitor had significantly higher anxiety scores. In cases with negative clinical investigations and consistent globus symptom, other treatment strategies, including speech therapy, antidepressants, and cognitive-behavioral therapy, should be considered.

  • The extract contents of various Phellinus species (Hymenochaetaceae) including P. linteus, P. baumii, P. pini and P. igniarius of domestic and foreign products, were examined to standardize the quality of these products. The differences of various extract contents were identified and compared between different species of Phellinus products. The thin layer chromatographic patterns were also analyzed and six unidentified samples were thought to originate from P. baumii and P. igniarius. The chemical standardization for the quality control of various origins could be suggested by this study.

  • In this study, construction modulus, void ratio and settlement characteristics of 38 CFRD in domestic and foreign countries was investigated from monitoring data and the effect of field dry density and void ratio to dam body was analyzed. The standard void ratio of CFRD that can be easily used for dam designer and field engineer was proposed from the monitoring data. It was conformed that we can get the degree of compaction needed for reasonable compaction of dam body by calculating the field dry density from inverse operation of the standard void ratio. It was thought that the standard void ratio of CFRD is 0.2 as shape factor is under 4 and is 0.28 as shape factor is over 4.

It was thought that the void ratio of CFRD depends on shape coefficient and in case of a high shape coefficient, the void ratio was high with its void ratio 0.17 -0.38.

  • The great flowing of information has brought a necessity for good management to make the best use of it in the highly competitive information age. The aims of this study are to investigate the main information sources - divided into largely three groups: literature sources, communication and information technology facilities), trying to find problem areas associated with IRM, indicating possible solutions. The result shows that internal information sources were regarded the most important and most frequently used. For the use of foreign materials, the higher the level of position is, the more people use them. With respect to communication methods, internal information sources were thought most important. With the dramatic falling of the price despite enormously increased functions, IT facilities are becoming important sources. However, the study reveals the use of them is quite limited to a few well-known facilities, which indicates that management should pay attention to more efficient use of them and useful training and education methods.

  • Until now, the eco-friendly construction (green construction) has been focused on reducing environmental impacts in use(operation and maintenance) phase. Considering the environmental influence along the life cycle of construction project, the impact in execution phase is rather lower than that in use phase. However, that impact is thought to be greatly decreased by well-organized activities. Based on its urgency and requirement for timely action, this study aimed to discuss the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction plan in execution phase from a broad perspective. To achieve this purpose, the green building rating systems in domestic and foreign countries have been reviewed, and the practice in Japan was investigated. In order to improve current on-site greenhouse gas management, the integration among construction phases, participants, and environmental factors, and institutional supports are required as well as the contractor's efforts.

  • E-cigarettes were considered safe at the early stage of market entry because they were thought not to contain harmful ingredients such as nicotine and because the smoke emitted was vapor. For this reason, the use of e-cigarettes as a safer alternative to tobacco cigarettes or as a smoking cessation aid has emerged. However, the study results on the effectiveness of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation are mixed. In response to the increased use of e-cigarettes, foreign countries have implemented various regulations, such as utilizing e-cigarettes for smoking cessation with a prescription in Australia; however, South Korea is still standing firm on recommending not to use e-cigarettes at all. Therefore, the effectiveness of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation and the regulatory trends of e-cigarette use overseas will be reviewed to discuss the future direction in South Korea needs to take.

  • Objectives: A group consisted of 32 Korean rural people had been travelled to Cambodia and Vietnam. During their travel for 7 days, first diarrheal case had occurred on 3rd day of travel and overall 8 people had diarrhea during travel. So we investigated the case for determination of the cause and route of infection. Methods: We interviewed all 32 people by visiting or telephone and took 23 stool samples from them, which are examined by Gyeungsangbuk-do Government Public Institute of Health & Environment in Korea. We interviewed travel agency for travel route and schedule. Results: The attack rate was 25.0% (8 cases) among 32 people. Of them, 3 cases were microbiologically confirmed to have the infection of Shigella flexneri (Serotype 3a). The result of this epidemiological investigation showed that the infection of shigellosis was happened in foreign countries. We assumed the water from Angkor-Watt was contaminated by S. flexneri. We could not able to test environmental specimens because of the infection is thought to be occurred in foreign countries. Conclusions: Most common infectious diseases from foreign countries are transmitted by water or food. Travellers to foreign countries must take caution for communicable diseases and must do report and get appropriate treatment when symptoms developed after travel.

  • Purpose: This descriptive research was carried out to identify how high school students' attitude to death and their meaning of life were affected by hospice volunteering and death education. Methods: This study is based on a structured questionnaire designed for 180 high school students who were given death education while doing volunteer work at non-profit hospice hospitals and another 288 high school students not doing any hospice volunteer work. The collected data was processed by the SPSS 20.0 program and then analyzed by $x^2$ test, t-test and ANOVA test. Results: High school students' attitude to death and their meaning of life showed significant differences depending on whether or not they had volunteered at hospice hospitals. The group with hospice volunteering experience tended to be more negative about death and have a higher meaning of life compared to those without hospice volunteering experience. Students with proper hospice recognition made up 52.4%, those who expressed hopes to receive hospice-care themselves if necessary accounted for 70.5%, and those who said they would like to take care of their family members either at home or at a hospice center if any of them got incurably sick comprised 59.0%. Those who thought dignified death is to be with one's family or any other meaningful person were 47.6% and 18.5% of the students thought that 'thinking they had led a meaningful life' was the core of a dignified death. Conclusion: Given the above results, it became clear that hospice volunteering and death education can affect high school students' meaning of life and their attitudes toward death.
