  • Once of recent issue in the leather industry is disposal of shaving scrap containing chromium. Shaving scrap is indispensible generated by control of the final thickness in the leather making process. It is the flesh layer of the skin consisting mainly of collagen. More recently, we have tried to improve the quality of the isolated gelatin. The purpose of this research was to extract gelatin for agricultural usage. As a result, it does not contain Cr and could obtained to a good gelatin that have more than 130,000Da. average molecular weight, more than 30 mps viscosity and more than 100g jelly strength. Gelatin that is extracted by alkaline condition expected to be available to high performance gelatin such as material of organic fertilizer(ex, Nitrogen-release fertilizer).

  • This study investigated the technological development of Korean functional product design for posture correction. We analyzed registered and disclosed Korean patents (n=289) of KIPRIS. They were posture correction technology patents filed from 1999 to 2018. Keywords used in patent selection were posture correction, posture correction clothing, posture correction band, rehabilitation clothing, joint protection, protective equipment, and compression wear. These were then analyzed by patent application year, product type, effect pursued, and posture correction body part. The results showed that patent applications related to posture correction technology have increased since 2014. Products subject to patents for posture correction technology were device/brace (59.5%), footwear (22.5%), and clothing (18.0%). Patents for posture correction pursued various wearing effects. The effects pursued were dependent on the product type. The device/brace focused on joint protection (76.7%) and muscle reinforcement (40.7%). Footwear was focused on joint protection (90.8%). The clothes were focused on muscle reinforcement (50.0%) and body shaping (36.5%). The clothing and device/brace for posture correction were worn on various body parts of the upper limbs to feet. The posture correction product design patent was to correct various body parts. Patents pursuing upper body correction focused on spine posture correction (n=99). Patents for foot posture correction have steadily increased (n=102). Patents for posture correction of the pelvis and hip joints were relatively few (n=46). The results of this study implied the necessity to develop technology to correct posture by combining the functions of device/brace and clothing.

  • The effect of draw ratio (8, 10, 12, 14 times) and additive CaCO3 content (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0 wt%) on the properties of high-performance PE monofilament was investigated in this study. As the draw ratio increased (8-14 times), the melting enthalpy (ΔHf), crystallinity, specific gravity, and tensile strength increased significantly. However, the draw ratio had little effect on the melting temperature (Tm) and crystallization temperature (Tc). The seawater fastness (stain and fade) of the hydrophobic PE monofilament prepared in this study showed an excellent grade of 4-5 in all draw ratios. To investigate the effect of the additive CaCO3 content on the properties of high-performance PE monofilament, the draw ratio was fixed at 14 times. It was found that the tensile strength of the PE monofilament sample containing 0.5 wt% of CaCO3 was much greater compared to the sample without CaCO3, but the elongation of the sample containing 0.5 wt% of CaCO3 was much less than the sample with 0 wt% CaCO3. However, in the case of the sample containing more than 0.5 wt% CaCO3, the tensile strength slightly decreased and the elongation slightly increased as the CaCO3 content increased. The seawater fastness (stain and fade) of the hydrophobic PE monofilament showed excellent grades of 4-5, regardless of the amount of additives. From the above results, it was found that the maximum draw ratio of 14 times with an additive of 0.5 wt% CaCO3 are the optimal conditions for manufacturing high-performance marine fusion materials with various fineness (denier) with high strength and low elongation.

  • The leather industry generates a large amount of hazardous leather waste of various types every year. Among them, shaving scrap is difficult to recycle because it contains chromium ions. Many studies in recent years have shown that shaving scraps can be processed into various types of valuable products, such as adsorbent, filler, and poultry feed. In this study, collagen peptides were extracted from shaving scraps and structurally modified to be developed as new materials with improved physicochemical properties. First, the chromium ions contained in the shaving scraps were removed using a sodium hydroxide solution, and purified through concentration and low-temperature crystallization. The purified collagen peptide was used to prepare the powder using a spray dryer. The extracted collagen peptides were structurally modified by introducing double bonds by reacting with methacrylic anhydride (MAA), and the product was confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Next, a copolymer was prepared by redox polymerization of the modified collagen peptide (MCP) and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA). The structure of the copolymer was qualitatively confirmed by FT-IR. In conclusion, this study confirmed that collagen peptides can be extracted from shaving scrap and converted into new eco-friendly materials through certain treatments.

  • In this study, thermoplastic starch (TPS), cross-linked starch (CS), and cross-linked starch modified with glycerol (CTPS) were prepared, and the mechanical properties of the compatibilized low-density polyethylene (LDPE) blends (LDPE/TPS, LDPE/CS, and LDPE/CTPS) were investigated and compared with those of uncompatibilized LDPE/TPS, LDPE/CS, and LDPE/CTPS blends. Maleic-anhydride-grafted polyethylene was used as the compatibilizer. The enhanced tensile strength and elongation at break for the compatibilized LDPE/modified starch blends are a result of the improved compatibility between LDPE and the modified starch, which was confirmed by torque measurements and scanning electron microscopy.

  • This article presents a way of tackling a special class of space optimization problems that arise in a number of practical applications in industry and elsewhere. It presents an elegant solution to a problem that was considered by (Das, 2005) in optimizing storage space in warehouse of a footwear manufacturing company. In (Das, 2005), the problem was formulated as a nonlinear programming problem. In this article, it is shown that the problem can be formulated as a generalized transportation problem which is a special case of generalized network flow problems. Further, an elegant scheme is devised to handle the dynamic situation of warehousing problem which can be easily translated into a decision support system for the warehouse management system. Also, the article points out certain obscurities and gaps in (Das, 2005).

  • The patent application state of Europe, U.S.A, and Korea was analyzed to grasp the technology development trends and to suggest a direction for research development of health related shoes. Europe has high concentration of patent activity in corrective treatment, while Korea has high concentration in fitness and U.S.A in diet related fields. Numerous shape and structure designs were done to have the effect of corrective treatment. Adding weight to shoes has been used to create diet-effect, but it suggests a lack of technical methods to increase weight effectively. For fitness effect, variation of shape and structure of the outsole are often used.

  • Diabetics often suffer from the complications of foot disease. Foot discomfort results from poor blood circulation. Thus, diabetics should wear socks that do not constrict the blood flow in the feet and legs. This study examines the design factors and performance requirements of socks for diabetics. We apply the results to the development of socks for diabetic. The participants in this study were 112 diabetic patients who had visited a hospital in Busan. We conducted statistical tests that included t-tests and chi-squared tests. The results depended on age and gender. Male and female patients did not differ from each other in the most favorite style; however, their second favorite style was different. The second most preferred style for male patients was calf-length socks, while the second most preferred style for female patients were ankle-length socks. Male patients preferred black or gray socks, while female patients preferred white socks. Socks for diabetics should be machine washable, easy to remove, non-slip, lightweight, comfortable, deodorized, and antibacterial.
