  • To evaluate the antioxidizing effect of flavonoid on fish oil and peroxidized fish oil, rats were fed with diets containing 5% corn oil (CO), 5% corn oil and 15% fresh fish oil (FO) or peroxidixed fish oil (PFO) for 4weeks. An half of FO and PFO group rats were injected with 10mg flavonoid (+)-catechin (a day per kg body weight) (FO-C and PFO-C). FO and FO-C group rats showed higher increase in body weight as compared to PFO, PFO-C group rats. Whereas, the opposite result was obtained in case of liver weight increase. In addition, catechin apparently reduced liver weight by 12~17%. Phospholipid, cholesterol, triglyceride and lipid peroxide content in serum and cholesterol, lipid peroxide content in liver and adipose tissue of PFO, PFO-C group rats were significantly higher than those of FO, FO-C one. These results suggested that catechin reduced the synthesis of lipid and protected effectively against lipid peroxidation. In fatty acids profile of neutral lipid and phospholipid, the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) versus saturated fatty acids (SFA) in PFO, PFO-C were lower than that of FO or FO-C because of ruduced PUFA. Contrary to our expectation, the enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in rat liver of FO and FO-C group were lower than those of PFO and PFO-C group. These results were quite interesting and might be explained in terms of homeostasis. In case of total lipid in liver, $C_{20:5}$, $C_{22:6}$ fatty acids were decreased in rat fed peroxidized fish oil. In conclusion, catechin was considered to be an antioxidative and hepatoprotective drug and hypolipidemic agent.

  • The boiled oyster vacuum-packed in cylindrical can(No. 301-3) were thermally processed at $115^{\circ}C$ to reach Fo values of 5~20 min. The yield was slightly decreased with the increasing of Fo-values (79.2~ 83.7%), and volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) contents increased markedly with the increasing of Fo-value. In fatty acid composition of canned oyster, the composition ratio of saturates and monoenes such as 14:0, 16:0 and 18:1n9 increased, while polyunsaturated fatty acids such as 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 decreased with the increasing of Fo-value. In taste compounds, content of total free amino acid in raw oyster was 1,533.5 mg%, and this total content was slightly increased (1,140.8~1,266.2 mg%) with the increasing of Fo values. But contents of betaine and ionic minerals such as Na, K, Mg and P decreased markedly by thermal processing at $115^{\circ}C$. As compared with Fo 5 min. heat treatment; Fo 20 min. heat treatment at $115^{\circ}C$ became more hardened in texture of oyster meat. In sensory evaluations on organoleptic characteristics, no significant difference at 5% level was observed among the canned boiled oyster meats heated at Fo 5~15 min.

  • Sunflower oil (SO), canola oil (CO) and frying oil (FO) were used as edible oils in this study. According to the frying number, the extracted oils from French fried potatoes were used as experimental samples. To investigate the relationship between the change of fatty acid composition and the stability of the lipid oxidation during frying, the changes of fatty acid composition and the degree of the lipid oxidation of samples were examined. Acid values and peroxide values were evaluated as the degree of lipid oxidation. The acid values of CO and FO were increased with the frying times. The increased acid values of CO and FO were 0.20 and 0.17 on the basis of initial value at 30 times, respectively, but the acid value of SO was lower than those of CO and FO. The peroxide values of the samples were not increased uniformly with the frying number. As the number of frying times was increased, the fatty acid composition of SO and FO were changed. Namely, the oleic acid composition was decreased, whereas the linoleic acid composition was increased with the number of frying times. The benzo(a)pyrene contents of the extracted oils from French fried potatoes did not change regularly as the frying times was increased.

  • To evaluate the effects of feeding linseed oil or/and sunflower oil mixed with fish oil on milk yield, milk composition and fatty acid (FA) profiles of dairy cows fed a high-concentrate diet, 24 crossbred primiparous lactating dairy cows in early lactation were assigned to a completely randomized design experiment. All cows were fed a high-concentrate basal diet and 0.38 kg dry matter (DM) molasses per day. Treatments were composed of a basal diet without oil supplement (Control), or diets of (DM basis) 3% linseed and fish oils (1:1, w/w, LSO-FO), or 3% sunflower and fish oils (1:1, w/w, SFO-FO), or 3% mixture (1:1:1, w/w) of linseed, sunflower, and fish oils (MIX-O). The animals fed SFO-FO had a 13.12% decrease in total dry matter intake compared with the control diet (p<0.05). No significant change was detected for milk yield; however, the animals fed the diet supplemented with SFO-FO showed a depressed milk fat yield and concentration by 35.42% and 27.20%, respectively, compared to those fed the control diet (p<0.05). Milk c9, t11-conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) proportion increased by 198.11% in the LSO-FO group relative to the control group (p<0.01). Milk C18:3n-3 (ALA) proportion was enhanced by 227.27% supplementing with LSO-FO relative to the control group (p<0.01). The proportions of milk docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were significantly increased (p<0.01) in the cows fed LSO-FO (0.38%) and MIX-O (0.23%) compared to the control group (0.01%). Dietary inclusion of LSO-FO mainly increased milk c9, t11-CLA, ALA, DHA, and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), whereas feeding MIX-O improved preformed FA and unsaturated fatty acids (UFA). While the lowest n-6/n-3 ratio was found in the LSO-FO, the decreased atherogenecity index (AI) and thrombogenicity index (TI) seemed to be more extent in the MIX-O. Therefore, to maximize milk c9, t11-CLA, ALA, DHA, and n-3 PUFA and to minimize milk n-6/n-3 ratio, AI and TI, an ideal supplement would appear to be either LSO-FO or MIX-O.

  • The purpose of this study is to prepare forward osmosis (FO) membranes using a variety of cellulose-based polymers and to evaluate the performance of difference depending on each of the polymers and additives. Forward osmosis membranes based on cellulose acetate (CA) and cellulose triacetate (CTA) were prepared through phase inversion. The performance of FO membranes developed, such as flux and salt rejection, was compared under the osmotically- and pressure-driven conditions. In CA FO membranes, the execution time of solvent evaporation and membrane annealing induced the change in membrane performance. But the performance of CTA FO membrane was improved by using additives rather than annealing. Moreover, the flux of CTA FO membrane was $4.46\;L/m^2hr$ but that of CA/CTA FO membrane was $8.89\;L/m^2hr$ in FO mode. The CTA FO membrane with blending CA was more efficient to increase FO permeate flow rather than using a single polymer membrane.

  • Fear of missing out (FoMO) refers to the desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing because they are afraid of missing the flow or not being included. Although FoMO has been recently proposed as a widespread phenomenon within social media, there has been few empirical research by which mechanism FoMO leads to social networking service (SNS) addiction. Therefore, this study examined whether FoMO mediated the relationship between adolescents' attachment and SNS addiction proneness. A total of 517 middle and high school students participated in the study and completed self-report questionnaires. Results showed that FoMO partially mediated the relationship between adolescents' parental attachment and SNS addiction proneness, whereas the relationship between adolescents' peer attachment and SNS addiction proneness was fully mediated by FoMO. These results suggest that unstable attachment might contribute to SNS addiction through FoMO, especially in case of peer attachment. Lastly, we discussed theoretical and practical implications of this study and suggestions for future research.

  • This study, the Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMO Scale) developed by Przybylski et al. (2013) was adapted and validated to the Korean culture. 3-factors were constructed through EFA and item content analysis. In the CFA, 3 models were constructed to verify the fit of the model. Compared the goodness of fit, 3-factors model with 8 items proved to be the most appropriate. Sub-factors extracted through the characteristic context and rationale of Korean culture are 'belonging needs', 'extrinsic motivation', and 'relative deprivation'. K-FoMO scale and the reliability level of each sub-factor were good. Convergent validity was assessed by significant correlation the K-FoMO scores with life satisfaction, positive emotions, negative emotions, and SNS addiction proneness. Discriminant validity was assessed by low correlation with gratitude. At the end, limitation and suggestions for the future research were discussed.

  • The aim of this paper is to evaluate and compare the performances of forward osmosis (FO) membranes using different materials. The FO membranes were synthesized using interfacial polymerization method on hydrophobic polysulfone (PSf) and relatively hydrophilic polyethersulfone (PES) supports. The FO performance such as flux and back diffusion was measured. The resulting fluxes of PSf and PES FO membranes were $4.3\;L/m^2hr$ and $17.8\;L/m^2hr$, respectively. The flux of the PES FO membrane was higher than that of the PSf FO membrane. The results indicated that hydrophillictity of the support membrane is important for increasing flux in FO process. Moreover, with decreasing the support layer thickness, flux increased considerably.

  • This study was performed to investigate the sedative-hypnotic activity of ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-enriched fermented marine organisms (FMO), including sea tangle (FST) and oyster (FO) by Lactobacillus brevis BJ20 (L. brevis BJ20). FST and FO were tested for their binding activity of the $GABA_A$-benzodiazepine and 5-$HT_{2C}$ receptors, which are well-known molecular targets for sleep aids. We also measured the sleep latency and sleep duration during pentobarbital-induced sleep in mice after oral administration of FST and FO. In $GABA_A$ and 5-$HT_{2C}$ receptor binding assays, FST displayed an effective concentration-dependent binding affinity to $GABA_A$ receptor, similar to the binding affinity to 5-$HT_{2C}$ receptor. FO exhibited higher affinity to 5-$HT_{2C}$ receptor, compared with the $GABA_A$ receptor. The oral administration of FST and FO produced a dose-dependent decrease in sleep latency and increase in sleep duration in pentobarbital-induced hypnosis. The data demonstrate that FST and FO possess sedativehypnotic activity possibly by modulating $GABA_A$ and 5-$HT_{2C}$ receptors. We propose that FST and FO might be effective agents for treatment of insomnia.

  • The anaerobic fluidized bed bioreactor (AFBR) treating synthetic wastewater to simulate domestic sewage was operated under GAC fluidization to provide high surface area for biofilm formation. Although the AFBR achieves excellent COD removal efficiency due to biological activities, concerns are still made with nutrient such as nitrogen remaining in the effluent produced by AFBR. In this study, forward osmosis membrane was applied to treat the effluent produced by AFBR to investigate removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN) with respect to the draw solution (DS) such as NaCl and glucose. Permeability of FO membrane increased with increasing DS concentration. About 55% of TN removal efficiency was observed with the FO membrane using 1 M of NaCl of draw solution, but almost complete TN removal efficiency was achieved with 1 M of glucose of draw solution. During 24 h of filtration, there was no permeate flux decline with the FO membrane regardless of draw solution applied.
