  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate polarization characteristics of heat-treated Ni-based self-flux alloy coating in alkaline solution. Ni-based self-flux alloy powder was sprayed to a steel substrate using flame spray process, and heat treatments were performed in a vacuum furnace at $800^{\circ}C$, $900^{\circ}C$, $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$. After heat treatments, corrosion tests were carried out using potentiostat/galvanostat at solution with pH 8 and pH 13. Corrosion potential(Ecorr) and corrosion current density(Icorr) could be analyzed from polarization curve. Anticorrosive effect of heat-treated coating at solution with pH 8 was relatively greater than at solution with pH 13. Heat-treated coating at $1100^{\circ}C$ showed the greatest anti-corrosion characteristics in alkaline solution.

  • Forward osmosis (FO) process is a chemical potential driven process, where highly concentrated draw solution (DS) is used to take water through semi-permeable membrane from feed solution (FS) with lower concentration. Recently, commercial FO membrane modules have been developed so that full-scale FO process can be applied to seawater desalination or water reuse. In order to design a real-scale FO plant, the performance prediction of FO membrane modules installed in the plant is essential. Especially, the flux prediction is the most important task because the amount of diluted draw solution and concentrate solution flowing out of FO modules can be expected from the flux. Through a previous study, a theoretical based FO module model to predict flux was developed. However it needs an intensive numerical calculation work and a fitting process to reflect a complex module geometry. The idea of this work is to introduce deep learning to predict flux of FO membrane modules using 116 experimental data set, which include six input variables (flow rate, pressure, and ion concentration of DS and FS) and one output variable (flux). The procedure of optimizing a deep learning model to minimize prediction error and overfitting problem was developed and tested. The optimized deep learning model (error of 3.87%) was found to predict flux better than the theoretical based FO module model (error of 10.13%) in the data set which were not used in machine learning.

  • In this work, Aqueous sericin solution was prepared by degumming process with electrolytic reduction water. Then, the microfiltration and ultrafiltration systems were applied to the concentration of aqueous sericin solution. The objective of this study was to select the optimum operating condition among the different pressure. The permeate flux and rejection ratio were observed with time, pressure, flow rate and concentration. and, the wastewater and permeated water quality values such as pH, BOD, COD, and NH levels were measured. In order to see the influence of electrolytic reduction water, the flux of pure water and electrolytic reduction water by PVDF22(MF) and PS100(UF) membrane was measured. In microfiltration system, the relative flux reduction decreased rapidly to 0.02 in the 30min, as the concentration polarization and gel layer formation were increased. and then the sericin concentration rejection ratio was 40%. In ultrafiltration system, the permeate flux decreased with time and concentration, and increased with the operating pressure and flow rate. Optimal condition in PS100 membrane system for sericin concentration was operating pressure 1.464kgf/$cm^24, operating flow rate $7\ell/min at\; 40^{\circ}C$. At that time, sericin concentration rejection ratio was 83% respectably. The sericin solution was concentrated from 0.1wt% solution to 0.2 wt % solution during about 2 hrs by the UF filteration membrane system.

  • In this study we have evaluated the separation characteristics and concentration of sericin using tubular type ultrafiltration membrane in silk degumming solution that extracted from electrolytic reduction water process. Ultrafiltration membranes have used in sericin separation performance and the separation characteristics of membrane satisfied typical Hagen-Poiseuille equation. It had the increase of flux according to the increase of feed pressure and temperature in occasion of pure water flux. And also the flux and solute rejection had about $25{\sim}60{\ell}/m^2{\cdot}h$ and more than 95% in sericin feed solution with concentration 1.00~1.89% at feed pressure force of $3{\sim}8kgf/cm^2$ respectively. In addition, the separation performance of tubular type ultrafiltration membrane for silk degumming solution was very steady-state with long experiment time.

  • The objective of this work is to study transdermal delivery of levodopa using iontophoresis and evaluate various factors which affect the transdermal transport. Levodopa is unstable in aqueous solution, and, in order to establish a stable condition for levodopa for the duration of experiment, we investigated the stability of levodopa in aqueous solutions of different pHs with/without the addition of dextrose or the application of current. Using stable aqueous solution, we have studied the effect of pH, polarity and penetration enhancer (ethanol) on transdermal flux and compared the results. We also investigated the iontophoretic flux from hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) hydrogel. In vitro flux study was performed at $33^{\circ}C$, using side-by-side diffusion cell. Full thickness hairless mouse skin and rat skin were used for this work. Current densities applied were 0.4 or $0.6mA/cm^2$ and current was off after 6 hour application. Stability study showed that levodopa solution with a pH 2.5 or 4.5 maintained the initial concentration of levodopa for 24 hours with the addition of 5% dextrose. However, at pH 9.5, levodopa was unstable and 30 to 40% of levodopa degraded within 24 hours, even with the addition of 5% dextrose. Hydrogel swollen with dextrose added levodopa solution maintained about 97% of the initial concentration of levodopa for 13 days, when stored in $4^{\circ}C$. The application of current did not affect the stability of levodopa in hydrogel. Flux study from levodopa solution with pH 2.5 showed that cathodal delivery of levodopa was higher than passive or anodal delivery. When the pH of the donor solution was 4.5, anodal delivery of levodopa was higher than passive or cathodal delivery. These results seem to indicate that electroosmosis plays more dominant role than electrorepulsion in the flux of levodopa at pH 2.5, and the reverse situation applies for pH 4.5. The passive flux was unexpectedly high for the ionized levodopa. Similar to the results from aqueous solution, cumulative amount of levodopa transported trom HPC hydrogel by cathodal delivery was significantly higher than passive or anodal delivery. The treatment of 70% ethanol cotton ball by scrubbing increased passive, anodal and cathodal flux, with the largest increase for anodal flux. These results indicate that iontophoretic delivery of zwitterion such as levodopa is much complicated than that can be expected from small ionic molecules with single charge. The results also indicate that the balance between electroosmosis and electrorepulsion plays a very important role in the transport through skin.

  • A hollow-fiber type polysulfone UF membrane was surface-coated with hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA). The effect of various coating parameters on permeation flux, such as concentration ratio of AIBN/HEMA, solvent(water or methanol), and UV irradiation time, was investigated. The water permeation flux of oil-emulsion increased with concentration ratio of AIBN/HEMA, and increased with UV irradiation time. The flux of the membrane coated in solution using methanol as a solvent was greater than that of the membrane coated in solution using water as a solvent. The flux of both the coated and the uncoated membrane declined with the operation. The flux decline means that the membrane fouling by oil-emulsion occurs. However, the fouling of the coated membrane was much less than that of the uncoated membrane.

  • High brightness (Y$_{x}$/Gd$_{1-x}$ )$_2$O$_3$:Eu Phosphor Particles were directly Prepared in the spray Pyrolysis by adding flux materials such as LiCl and HBO$_3$. The (Y$_{x}$/Gd$_{1-x}$ )$_2$O$_3$:Eu particles prepared from solution with flux material had higher PL (photoluminescence) intensities than those prepared from solution without flux. In the spray pyrolysis, the flux acts as promoter of the growth of crystallite and activation of doping material as in the solid state reaction method. Additionally, the flux improved PL intensity of (Y$_{x}$/Gd$_{1-x}$ )$_2$O$_3$:Eu phosphor particles by densifying the internal structure and eliminating the defect existing inside and surface of (Y$_{x}$/Gd$_{1-x}$ )$_2$O$_3$:Eu phosphor particles.r particles.

  • Green-emitting $Ba_{1.468}Sr_{0.5}SiO_4\;:\;Eu_{0.012},\;Y_{0.02}$ phosphor powders under long-wavelength ultraviolet light were prepared via high-temperature flame spray pyrolysis from spray solutions with and without $NH_4Cl$ flux. The effects of the temperature of the diffusion flame and the $NH_4Cl$ flux on the morphologies, crystal structures and photoluminescence intensities of the $Ba_{1.468}Sr_{0.5}SiO_4\;:\;Eu_{0.012},\;Y_{0.02}$ phosphor powders were investigated. The phosphor powders obtained from the spray solution with the $NH_4Cl$ flux had higher photoluminescence intensities compared to phosphor powders obtained from the spray solution without the flux. The photoluminescence intensity of the phosphor powders obtained from the spray solution without the flux decreased as the flow rate of the fuel gas increased. On the other hand, the photoluminescence intensity of the phosphor powders obtained from the spray solution with the flux increased as the flow rate of the fuel gas increased. The difference of in the phase purity and morphology of the powders affected the photoluminescence intensities of the phosphor powders.

  • Direct treatment of municipal wastewater by forward osmosis (FO) process was evaluated in terms of water flux decline, reverse salt diffusion, pollutants rejection and concentration efficiency by using synthetic seawater as the draw solution. It was found that when operating in PRO mode (active layer facing the draw solution), although the FO membrane exhibited higher osmotic water flux, more severe flux decline and reverse salt diffusion was also observed due to the more severe fouling of pollutants in the membrane support layer and accompanied fouling enhanced concentration polarization. In addition, although the water flux decline was shown to be lower for the FO mode (active layer facing the feed solution), irreversible membrane fouling was identified in both PRO and FO modes as the water flux cannot be restored to the initial value by physical flushing, highlighting the necessity of chemical cleaning in long-term operation. During the 7 cycles of filtration conducted in the experiments, the FO membrane exhibited considerably high rejection for TOC, COD, TP and $NH_4{^+}-N$ present in the wastewater. By optimizing the volume ratio of seawater draw solution/wastewater feed solution, a concentration factor of 3.1 and 3.7 was obtained for the FO and PRO modes, respectively. The results demonstrated the validity of the FO process for direct treatment of municipal wastewater by using seawater as the draw solution, while facilitating the subsequent utilization of concentrated wastewater for bioenergy production, which may have special implications for the coastline areas.

  • This study is to find the optimum draw solution in fertilizer-drawn forward osmosis desalination. Considering osmotic pressure, solubility, and pH, 20 blended fertilizers were screened. Their performance were evaluated in terms of pure water permeate flux, reverse solute flux, and specific reverse solute flux for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. The pure water permeate flux of blended fertilizers including KCl were relatively higher. The reverse solute flux and specific reverse solute flux for nitrogen of blended fertilizers containing ${NO_3}^-$ ion were relatively higher than those of the nitrate ion-free draw solution. Those for phosphorus, and potassium of blended fertilizers including $NH_4H_2PO_4$, and $KNO_3$ were relatively higher than those of the phosphorus-free, and potassium-free draw solution, respectively. The blended fertilizer of $NH_4H_2PO_4$ and KCl contains all of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which are essential elements of fertilizer, and has the relatively high water permeation flux and the low reverse solute flux for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Therefore, it is the most effective draw solution for fertilizer-drawn forward osmosis desalination.
