When water shortage has been getting worse recently, toilet water-saving is one of the most effective way to solve the water shortage. Therefore, in this study, toilet flushing performance was investigated with VOF(Volume Of Fluid) model to obtain the basic design data for the development of high-efficiency toilets. The result showed that the shorter trapway, the longer the flushing duration time. However, the shorter trapway is found to have disadvantage in exhausting dirt due to relatively weak siphon and higher curvature. Since the remaining water in a trapway appears to help siphon, it is also an important factor in developing high-efficiency toilets. Although higher water level in the water tank shows better performance in flushing, lower water level is preferred to save water. Too low water level may cause dirt to clog the trapway due to relatively weak siphon.

A contamination event occurring in water distribution networks (WDNs) needs to be handled with the appropriate mitigation strategy to protect public health safety and ensure water supply service continuation. Typically the mitigation phase consists of contaminant sensing, public warning, network inspection, and recovery. After the contaminant source has been detected and treated, contaminants still exist in the network, and the contaminated water should be flushed out. The recovery period is critical to remove any lingering contaminant in a rapid and non-detrimental manner. The contaminant flushing can be done in several ways. Conventionally, the opening of hydrants is applied to drain the contaminant out of the system. Relying on advanced information and communication technology (ICT) on WDN management, warning and information can be distributed fast through electronic media. Water utilities can inform their customers to participate in the contaminant flushing by opening and closing their house faucets to drain the contaminated water. The household draining strategy consists of determining sectors and timeslots of the WDN users based on hydraulic simulation. The number of sectors should be controlled to maintain sufficient pressure for faucet draining. The draining timeslot is determined through hydraulic simulation to identify the draining time required for each sector. The effectiveness of the strategy is evaluated using three measurements, such as Wasted Water (WW), Flushing Duration (FD), and Pipe Erosion (PE). The optimal draining strategy (i.e., group and timeslot allocation) in the WDN can be determined by minimizing the measures.
Sodium dodecyl sulfate, which was anionic surfactant, at a concentration higher than its critical micellar concentration was added to calcium solution for forming micelles. Then aggregates were formed by adsorption or binding of calcium ions on the surface of micelles, and gathering between them, and then rejected by two kinds of ceramic membranes to remove calcium ions. As result, rejection rates of calcium were higher than 99.98%. And in our experimental range the higher TMP trended to increase the resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$), total permeate volume ($V_T$), dimensionless permeate flux ($J/J_o$) and permeate flux (J) because TMP was driving force. And we investigated effects of $N_2$-back-flushing time and filtration time, that was back-flushing period, during periodic $N_2$-back-flushing on ceramic membranes. As result, optimal BTs for NCMT-623l ($0.07{\mu}m$ pore size) and NCMT-7231 membrane ($0.10{\mu}m$) were 10 sec and 15 sec, respectively. Also, optimal FT was 5 min for both membranes, and the frequent $N_2$-back-flushing could decrease membrane fouling effectively. Then, the optimal conditions resulting from our experiments for synthetic calcium solution were applied to groundwater using as washing process of soymilk package. As result, rejection rates of calcium were higher than 99.98%.
The $N_2$ back-flushing period (FT) and time (BT) were investigated in hybrid process of ceramic microfiltration and PES (polyethersulfone) beads loaded with titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) photocatalyst for advanced drinking water treatment in viewpoints of membrane fouling resistance ($R_f$), permeate flux (J), and total permeate volume ($V_T$). As decreasing FT and increasing BT, $R_f$ decreased and J increased, and finally the maximum $V_T$ could be acquired at FT 10 min and BT 30 sec. In FT effect experiment, treatment efficiencies of turbidity and dissolved organic matters (DOM) were the highest at no back-flushing (NBF) because of dramatic membrane fouling. As result of BT effect, the treatment efficiencies were the maximum at BT 30 sec, which was different with the FT result. Because the photocatalyst beads could be cleaned effectively as decreasing FT and increasing BT, turbidity treatment efficiency increased a little from 95.4% to 97.5% as decreasing FT, and from 95.9% to 98.5% as increasing BT. Also DOM treatment efficiency increased from 70.8% to 80.6% as decreasing FT, and from 75.1% to 85.8% as increasing BT. The optimal condition, where the treatment efficiencies and $V_T$ were the maximum, should be FT 10 min and BT 30 sec in our experimental range.
Surfactant enhanced in-situ soil flushing was performed to remediate the soil and groundwater at an oil contaminated site, where had been used as a military vehicle repair area for 40 years. A section from the contaminated site (4.5 m $\times$ 4.5 m $\times$ 6.0 m) was selected for the research, which was composed of heterogeneous sandy and silt-sandy soils with average $K_d$ of 2.0$\times$$10^{-4}$cm/sec. Two percent of sorbitan monooleate (POE 20) and 0.07% of iso-prophyl alcohol were mixed for the surfactant solution and 3 pore volumes of surfactant solution were injected to remove oil from the contaminated section. Four injection wells and two extraction wells were built in the section to flush surfactant solution. Water samples taken from extraction wells and the storage tank were analyzed on a gas-chromatography (GC) for TPH concentration in the effluent with different time. Five pore volumes of solution were extracted while TPH concentration in soil and groundwater at the section were below the Waste Water Discharge Limit (WWDL). The effluent TPH concentration from wells with only water flushing was below 10 ppm. However, the effluent concentration using surfactant solution flushing increased to 1751 ppm, which was more than 170 times compared with the concentration with only water flushing. Total 18.5 kg of oil (TPH) was removed from the soil and groundwater at the section. The concentration of heavy metals in the effluent solution also increased with the increase of TPH concentration, suggesting that the surfactant enhanced in-situ flushing be available to remove not only oil but heavy metals from contaminated sites. The removal efficiency of surfactant enhanced in-situ flushing was investigated at the real contaminated site in Korea. Results suggest that in-situ soil flushing could be a successful process to remediate contaminated sites distributed in Korea.
In this study the discharged wastewater from a paper plant was filtrated by 4 kinds of tubular carbon ceramic ultrafiltration membranes with periodic water-back-flushing. We could investigate effects of watch-back-flushing period, transmembrane pressure (TMP) and flow rate, and find optimal operating conditions. The back-f1ushing time (BT) was fixed at 3 sec, and fi1tration times (FT) werc changed in 15~60 scc, TMP in 1.00~2.50$kg_{f}$/$cm^2$, and the flow rates in 0.27~1.75 L/min. The optimal conditions were discussed in 7he viewpoints of dimensionless permeate flux (J/J$_{0}$), total permeate volume ($V^T$) and resistance of membrane fouling ($R^f$). Optima1 back-flushing period was BT/FT=0.20, suggesting that the frequent back-flushing should decrease membrane fouling. Optimal TMP in the viewpoint of $V^T$ was 1.00~1.55$kg_{f}$/$cm^2$, suggesting that rising TMP should increase membrane fouling and decrease permeate flux. But, rising f1ow rate should decrease membrane fouling and increase permeate flux. Then, average rejection rates of pollutants filtratedby carbon ceramic membranes were 88~98 % for turbidity, 48~72% fort $COD_{cr}$ and 37~76% for TDS.
In this study, sodium dedocyl sulfate (SDS), which was anionic surfactant, was added for forming micelles to remove ferrous ions that could be contained with a small amount in industrial water. Then aggregates were formed by adsorption or binding of ferrous ions on the surface of micelles, and then rejected by ceramic membranes to remove ferrous ions. Ferrous concentration was fixed at 1mM and SDS was changed as $0{\sim}10mM$ to investigate the effect of the anionic surfactant. As a result, rejection rate of ferrous was the highest to 88.97% at 6mM. And we used ELS (Electrophoretic Light Scattering Spectrometer) to investigate particle size distribution of micellar aggregates depending on SDS concentration. Then distribution of large aggregates was the highest at 6mM. And we investigated effects of $N_2$-back-flushing time (BT) during periodic $N_2$-back-flushing on ceramic membranes. Finally optimal $N_2$-BT for NCMT-723l (pore size $0.10{\mu}m$) membrane was 20 sec.
We tried to mass-propagate Prunus yedoensis from Jeju through tissue culture. We investigated the effect of bud collection time, the concentration of $NH_4NO_3$ in media and plant growth regulators(BAP, $GA_3$ and IBA) on the differentiation of winter buds. Buds, taken in February, flushed well regardless of various in vitro conditions. Bud flushing rate was significantly different depending on the collection time. BAP appeared to be effective on bud flushing. Sixty percent of buds taken in October flushed on the media containing $3.0mg/{\ell}$ BAR. No buds flushed on the medium supplemented with IBA. Buds, after flushing in BAP media, grew as foliated shoots and showed a rosette of leaves. When $GA_3$ supplemented to the BAP-containing media as a higher concentration than that of BAP, shoots elongated and developed into normal shoots. The combination of BAP $1.0mg/{\ell}$ and $GA_3$$2.0mg/{\ell}$ is most recommendable for shoot elongation.
The optimal operation conditions, including voltage applied, reaction time, distance between electrodes. and electrode material. were investigated for the treatment of soil flushing effluent using electrofloatation. When 3V was applied for 1 hour, 88% oil-water separation efficiency was achieved. In case of 6V and above, 90% efficiencies were achieved. As reaction time and distance between electrodes were longer, separation efficiencies were higher and lower, respectively. Separation efficiencies for different anode materials were copper > aluminum > iron > titanium. It might result from the differences of their electrical conductivities.

In this study, the coupled effect of electrokinetic and ultrasonic remediation technology was investigated for removing of heavy metal and organic matter at the same time. The laboratory tests were conducted using specially designed and fabricated electrokinetic and ultrasonic devices. The electrokinetic technique was applied to remove mainly the heavy metal and the ultrasonic technique was applied to remove mainly organic substance in contaminated soil. Diesel fuel and Cd were used as a surrogate contaminant for this test. A series of laboratory experiments involving electrokinetic and electrokinetic+ultrasonic flushing test were carried out. An increase in permeability and contaminant removal rate was observed in electrokinetic+ultrasonic flushing test.
