  • This research was performed to evaluate the feasibility of in situ soil flushing for TPH-contaminated soil remediation. It was conducted in batch test as fundamental research for in situ soil flushing. The 30% of initial TPH concentration was removed by shaking only in batch test. The removal efficiency of TPH in case of groundwater as surfactant dilution solution was approximate 2~6% lower than that of distilled water. Mixing ratio of soil to surfactant solution did not practically effect on the TPH removal efficiency. In the experiment of using single or mixed surfactant solution with 0.1~4.0 wt%, Tween-80, SWA-1503, SWA-1503+SDS showed averagely over 80%. It was determined that the optimum surfactant concentration was 0.1 wt% because there was no significant difference between concentrations of 0.1~4.0 wt%.

  • PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) deposited in soil are one of serious problems against sustainable land use. In this paper, chemical soil flushing in a packed sandy soil matrix using a natural surfactant, $\beta$-cyclodextrin (CD) was studied via a fluorescence spectroscopy and a dye labelling. The contaminants are lipophilic ring compounds- phenanthrene and naphthalene. Sand type and flushing intensity (rate and concentration) are chosen as important investigation variables. The removal efficiencies were proportional to flow rate, concentration, temperature of the flushing solution and voidity of the sand column. Initial sorption of the surfactant onto the soil matrix was found to be a key step while flow shear was more crucial in the latter steps. The residual portion of the surfactant, which was most likely to be due to the initial sorption, would not be so influential on this type of soil washing for long times. These results will be useful in future for pilot scale in situ washing and for establishing better soil washing strategy.

  • In this study, we used the hybrid module that was composed of granular activated carbons (GAC) packing between module inside and outside of tubular ceramic microfiltration membrane for advanced drinking water treatment. Instead of natural organic matters (NOM) and fine inorganic particles in natural water source, modified solution was prepared with humic acid and kaolin. We were investigated effect of water-back-flushing time (BT) and water-back-flushing period (FT) to minimize membrane fouling and to enhance permeate flux (J) in the hybrid process, and tried to find the optimal operating conditions. As a result, resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$) was slightly decreased according to increasing BT. Also, the shorter FT was the more effective to reduce $R_f$ and to enhance J because of frequent water-back-flushing. However, the optimal BT and FT conditions were 10 sec and 8 min respectively when operating costs were considered. Then, the optimal conditions derived from our experiments of modified solution were applied to lake water treatment. As a result, average treatment efficiencies of turbidity, $UV_{254}$ absorbance, and $COD_{Mn}$ were very high as 99.11%, 91.40% and 89.34%, respectively, but that of TDS was low as 30.05%.

  • The instability of hirsutenone (HST), a potential therapeutic candidate for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) and ovarian carcinoma, is one of the main concerns for the development of drug product. In the present study, aqueous stability of HST was investigated by kinetic analysis, and the effect of several factors covering temperature, nitrogen gas ($N_2$) flushing, and selection of proper antioxidant was compared. Cosolvent system composed of distilled water and methanol (9:1 v/v) was used as a vehicle to dissolve HST at the concentration of $200{\mu}g/mL$. Samples of aqueous solution were prepared under the absence or presence of antioxidants, such as ascorbic acid (AA), sodium edetate (EDTA), and ascorbyl palmitate (AP), and subjected for stability test. The degradation of HST in aqueous solution was followed by the first order kinetics with an extremely short half life of less than a week at room temperature, and was accelerated as the temperature increased. $N_2$ flushing brought a little enhancement in stability compared to control solution, but the effect was insufficient. The addition of AA and EDTA (0.1%) significantly enhanced the stability of HST at $40^{\circ}C$, but the addition of AP (0.01%) was limited due to its water insolubility and revealed no promising result. The stability of HST was increased proportionally by the amount of AA added, showing the difference in degree of stabilization as an order of magnitude. Finally, we conclude that HST was stabilized by the addition of a suitable antioxidant, suggesting AA as the most effective stabilizer.

  • This study examined the effect of an electrokinetic-flushing remediation for a soil of a high permeability. The soil was sampled from the site around a research atomic reactor which had high hydro-conductivities due to a high content of sand in the soil. The flow rate of the washing reagent was fast at the beginning but it was reduced as time lapsed. In the case of using citric acid as a washing reagent, the flow rate was fastest, 78.7 ml/day. The removal efficiencies of $Co^{2+}$ and $Cs^+$ from a soil cell with acetic acid were the highest, which were 95.2% and 84.2% respectively. The soil waste-solution volume generated from the electrokinetic remediation was reduced to about 1/20 of that from the soil washing remediation. Meanwhile, the electrokinetic-flushing method enhanced the removal efficiencies of $Co^{2+}$ and $Cs^+$ from the soil by about 6% and 2% respectively, compared to those by the electrokinetic method. Consequently, it was found that the electrokinetic-flushing method was more effective for the remediation of a soil with a high permeability.

  • Vertical electrokintic-flushing remediation equipment was developed for the remediation of a radioactive soil near nuclear facilities. An optimum reagent was selected to decontaminate the radioactive soil near nuclear facilities with the developed vertical electrokintic-flushing remediation equipment, and the optimum remediation conditions were established to obtain a higher remediation efficiency. Namely, acetic acid was selected as an optimum reagent due to its higher remediation efficiency. When the electrokinetic remediation and the electrokinetic-flushing remediation results were compared, the removal efficiency of 4.6% and the soil waste solution volume of 1.5 times were increased in the electrokinetic remediation. When the potential gradient within an electrokinetic soil cell was increased by two times (4.0 V/cm), the removal efficiencies of $Co^{2+}$ and $Cs^+$ were increased by about 4.3%($Co^{2+}$ : 98.9%, $Cs^+$ : 96.7%). Also, when the reagent concentration was increased from 0.01M to 0.05M, the removal efficiency of $Co^{2+}$ was increased but that of $Cs^+$ was decreased. Therefore, the optimum remediation conditions were that the acetic concentration was $0.01M{\sim}0.05M$, the potential gredient was 4 V/cm, the injection of reagent 2.4ml/g, and the remediation period was 20days.

  • The effectiveness of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) and deztran in the prevention of adhesion formation on the uterus and embryo collection in rabbits was elucidated. Following induction of adhesion on uterus and uterine horns by abrasion and retrograde flushing of embryos in gonadotropins primed rabbits, the solutions of saline (for control), 1% SCMC, 10% dextran and a synthetic solution of 1% SCNC and 10% dextran in saline were infused in the abdominal cavity at the dose of 5 ml/kg of body weight. The average percentage of adhesion was 11.1, 28.6, 41.7 and 73.3% in the rabbits infused with the synthetic, 1% SCMC, 10% dextran and saline solutions, respectively. The synthetic solution was more effective than other solutions in the rabbits. The average number and recovery rate of embryos were significantly (P<0.01) higher in the synthetic solution group than 1% SCMC, 10% dextran or saline solution groups. Among the collected embryos in the groups, the distribution of the normal embryos was higher in the synthetic solution group (99%) and the 10% dextran solution group (95.7%) than the 1% SCMC solution group (78.4%) and saline (66.2%). Theretore, a synthetic solution which is combined with 1% SCMC and 10% deztran in saline can be effectively used for the prevention of adhesion formation after uterine surgery and embryo collection.

  • The optimal operation conditions of electrofloatation for oil-water separation of soil flushing effluent including electrolyte and pH were investigated. The reactor (200 ${\times}$ 10 ${\times}$ 15 cm) for the experiment was constructed by using acrylic plate. Diesel concentration was 1,000 mg/L in the 1 % mixed surfactant solution ($POE_5$: $POE_{14}$ 1: 1). Titanium coated electrode was used as cathode and stainless steel electrode as anode. Reaction time was 62 minutes (reaction time: 60 min., flotation time: 2 min.) and voltage was 6 V. The separation efficiency of electrofloatation was improved to 40% by electrolyte addition. Furthermore, NaCl (1N) added as electrolyte was showed enhanced efficiency compared to NaOH (1N). While, the effect of both NaCl and NaOH was sequentially increased in the range of 0.2∼1.0% (0.02∼0.1 M). The equilibrium time was found as 20 min. in the range of 0.4∼1.0% (0.04∼0.1M) for both of them.

  • Field investigations for subsurface soil and groundwater at a gas station showed that the site was severely contaminated and even petroleum compounds as free liquid state were observed. Pilot-scale soil flushing and soil vapor extraction process(SVE) were applied to evaluate the effectiveness of pollutants removal. Surfactant solution, Tween 80, was used to enhance the solubility of petroleum compounds and resulted in about 10 times increase on TPH(Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon) concentration. As for SVE method, maximum concentration of TPH and BTEX reached within 24 hours of extraction and then continuously decreased. Considerations on the groundwater level and the kinetic limitation for volatilization of contaminants have to be taken into account for the effective application of SVE process.

  • For hybrid water treatment of carbon fiber ultrafiltration and photocatalyst, we used the hybrid module that was composed of photocatalyst packing between tubular membrane outside and module inside. Photocatalyst was PP (polypropylene) bead coated with $TiO_2$ powder by CVD (chemical vapor deposition) process. Water back-flushing of 10 sec was performed per every period of 10 min to minimize membrane fouling for modified solution, which was prepared with humic acid and kaolin. Resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$) decreased as humic acid concentration changed from 10 mg/L to 2 mg/L, and finally the highest total permeate volume ($V_T$) could be obtained at 2 mg/L, which was the same with the previous results. Then, treatment efficiencies of turbidity and humic acid were above 98.9% and 88.7%, respectively, those did not depend on the humic acid concentration. However, the treatment efficiency of humic acid increased a little as the humic acid concentration increased in the previous results.
