This study analyzes the thermal effects on the performance of an air foil thrust bearing (AFTB) using COMSOL Multiphysics to approximate actual bearing behavior under real conditions. An AFTB is a sliding-thrust bearing that uses air as a lubricant to support the axial load. The AFTB consists of top and bump foils and supports the rotating disk through the hydrodynamic pressure generated by the wedge effect from the inclined surface of the top foil and the elastic deformation of the bump foils, similar to a spring. The use of air as a lubricant has some advantages such as low friction loss and less heat generation, enabling air bearings to be widely used in high-speed rotating systems. However, even in AFTB, the effects of energy loss due to viscosity at high speeds, interface frictional heat, and thermal deformation of the foil caused by temperature increase cannot be ignored. Foil deformation derived from the thermal effect influences the minimum decay in film thickness and enhances the film pressure. For these reasons, performance analyses of isothermal AFTBs have shown few discrepancies with real bearing behavior. To account for this phenomenon, a thermal-fluid-structure analysis is conducted to describe the combined mechanics. Results show that the load capacity under the thermal effect is slightly higher than that obtained from isothermal analysis. In addition, the push and pull effects on the top foil and bump foil-free edges can be simulated. The differences between the isothermal and thermal behaviors are discussed.
The authors have interpreted one patient's full mJuth intra-oral films, oblique- lateral film of the left mandible and orthopantomograph which revealed 6 radicular and 1 residual cysts. As a results of interpretation of these serial films, we have drawn following conclusions: 1. Radicular cyst arose from the cell rests contained in an apical granuloma which was sequel to advanced pulpitis due to dental caries. 2. Residual cyst was developed from remaining cell rests after the extraction of a tooth with such a radicular cyst or apical dental granuloma. 3. Cyst grew in size by absorption of fluid into cystic cavity due to difference in osmotic pressure between the cystic fluid and adjacent tissue fluid.

We perform two kinds of computer simulations on polydisperse hard-sphere systems; a molecular-dynamics simulation on atomic systems and a Brownian-dynamics simulation on colloidal suspensions. Analyses of the mean square displacement, the radial distribution function, and the pressure suggest that there exist three phase regions, a liquid phase region, a metastable phase region, and a crystal phase region, where the freezing and melting points are shifted to the values higher than in monodisperse case. It is also shown that the long-time behavior of colloidal suspensions is exactly the same as that of atomic systems.
In a nuclear reactor containment, wall condensation forms with noncondensable gases and their accumulation near the condensate film leads to a significant reduction in heat transfer. In the framework of nuclear reactor safety, the film condensation in the presence of noncondensable gases is of high relevance with regards to safety concerns as it is closely associated with peak pressure predictions for containment integrity and the performance of components installed for containment cooling in accident conditions. In the present study, CUPID code, which has been developed by KAERI for the analysis of transient two-phase flows in nuclear reactor components, is improved for simulating film condensation in the presence of noncondensable gases. In order to evaluate the condensate heat transfer accurately in a large system using the two-fluid model, a mass diffusion model, a liquid film model, and a wall film condensation model were implemented into CUPID. For the condensation simulation, a wall function approach with a heat/mass transfer analogy was applied in order to save computational time without considerable refinement for the boundary layer. This paper presents the implemented wall film condensation model, and then introduces the simulation result using the improved CUPID for a conceptual condensation problem in a large system.
This paper presents the comparison analysis of a Journal and thrust FDB (fluid dynamic bearing) and a conical FDB in a HDD spindle motor. The Reynolds equation is appropriately transformed to describe journal, thrust and conical bearing. Finite element method is applied to analyze the FDB by satisfying the continuity of mass and pressure at the interface between the hearings. The pressure field of the bearings is numerically approximated by applying the Reynolds boundary condition. The load and friction torque are obtained by integrating the pressure and the velocity gradient along the fluid film. The flying height of the spindle motor is measured to verify the proposed analytical result. This research shows that the conical bearing generates bigger load capacity and less friction torque than the journal and thrust bearing in a HDD spindle motor.
In this study, a pressure vessel for a heat pipe was fabricated by bonding a metal thin film using a polymer compound sheet. In order to confirm the applicability of the experimentally manufactured copper material thin heat pipe of 0.6 mm or less, the pressure resistance and effective thermal conductivity for pressure generated according to the type of the working fluid of the heat pipe were evaluated to suggest the commercialization potential of the thin heat pipe. As a result of evaluating the pressure resistance and effective thermal conductivity performance of the thin heat pipe, the following conclusions were drawn. 1) Using a PEEK-based polymer compound sheet, it was possible to fabricate a pressure vessel for a thin heat pipe with a pressure resistance of up to 1.0 MPa by bonding a copper thin film, and the possibility of commercialization was confirmed at a temperature below 120 ℃. 2) In the case of the effective thermal conductivity performance evaluation test, the effective thermal conductivity of ethanol was higher than that of FC72 and Novec7000, and in the case of ethanol, the maximum effective thermal conductivity was 2,851 W/mK at 3.0 W of heating.
With an attempt to investigate the correlation between the internal pressure distribution of slit nozzle and the thickness uniformity of slot-coated thin films, we have performed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of slit nozzles and slot coating of high-viscosity (4,800 cPs) polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using a gantry slot-die coater. We have calculated the coefficient of variation (CV) to quantify the pressure and velocity distributions inside the slit nozzle and the thickness non-uniformity of slot-coated PDMS films. The pressure distribution inside the cavity and the velocity distribution at the outlet are analyzed by varying the shim thickness and flow rate. We have shown that the cavity pressure uniformity and film thickness uniformity are enhanced by reducing the shim thickness. It is addressed that the CV value of the cavity pressure that can ensure the thickness non-uniformity of less than 5% is equal to and less than 1%, which is achievable with the shim thickness of 150 ㎛. It is also found that as the flow rate increases, the average cavity pressure is increased with the CV value of the pressure unchanged and the maximum coating speed is increased. As the shim thickness is reduced, however, the maximum coating speed and flow rate decrease. The highly uniform PDMS films shows the tensile strain as high as 180%, which can be used as a stretchable substrate.
Reynolds equation, which describes behavior of fluid film in journal bearings, basically satisfies mass conservation. But, boundary conditions usually used with this equation, e.g. half Sommerfeld or Reynolds boundary conditions, cannot fulfill this natural law of conservation. In the case of connecting rod bearing, where applied load is dynamic and its magnitude is relatively large, such unrealistic boundary conditions have serious influence on calculation results, especially on lubricant flow rate or power disspation which are important parameters in thermal analysis. In this paper, mass-conserving boundary condition was applied in the finite element analysis of connecting rod bearings. Lubricant flow rate and power dissipation rate were calculated together with journal center locus, minimum film thickness and maxmium film pressure. These computation results were compared with those of the case of Reynolds boundary condition. Balance between inlet and outlet flow rate was well achieved in the case of mass-conserving boundary condition.
In this study, using the general expressions predicting the pressure under a blade and the volume of coating fluid passing through the blade edge, it is predicted the change of the coating wet film thickness related with various parameters determining the characteristics of this blade coating process. Using the results of this research, it can be found the optimized coating wet film thickness taking into account the parameters related with various coating process on various metal surfaces will be able to be predicted.
Flexible media such as the paper, the film, etc. are thin, light and very flexible. They behave in geometrically nonlinear. Any of small force makes large deformation. So we must including aerodynamic effect when its behavior is predicted. Thus, it becomes fully coupled fluid-structure interaction(FSI) problem. In FSI problems, where the fluid mesh near the structure undergoes large deformations and becomes unacceptably distorted, which drive the time step to a very small value for explicit calculations, the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) methods or rezoning are used to create a new undistorted mesh for the fluid domain, which allows the calculations to continue. In this paper, FE sheet model considering geometric nonlinearity is formulated to simulate the behavior of the flexible media. Aerodynamic force to the media by surrounding air is calculated by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Q2Q1(Taylor-Hood) element which means biquadratic for velocity and bilinear for pressure is used for fluid domain. Q2Q1 element satisfies LBB condition and any stabilization technique is not needed. In this paper, cantilevered sheet in the viscous incompressible Navier-Stokes flow is simulated to check the mesh motion and numerical integration scheme, and then falling paper in the air is simulated and the effects of some representative parameters are investigated.
