Combustion and emission characteristics in a direct injection diesel engine is closely related to the intake port system. It is therefore important to understand the swirl flow characteristics formed by a helical intake port. However there are still many uncertainties. The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the effects of the valve eccentricity ratio and the inlet flow conditions of a helical intake port on the characteristics of an in-cylinder swirl flow. A steady state flow test rig consisted of ISM(impulse swirl meter), LFM(laminar flow meter) and cylinder head with a helical intake port was used. The swirl ratio(Rs) and mean flow coefficient(Cf(mean)) with inlet flow conditions were measured. The results of these experiment can be summarized as follows. Swirl flow characteristics of a helical intake port are affected by the inlet flow conditions, and especially they are much affected by the length of a manifold runner and the rotational angle of a curved manifold runner.

Numerical analysis and experimental verification of a thermal liquid mass flow meter (LMFM) were performed. The configuration of the LMFM was the same as a gas mass flow meter (GMFM), but the opposite results in temperature difference between upstream and downstream thermistors occurred. In the case of the gas, the convection depending on the flow of thermal mass was small and comparable to the conduction through the sensor tube wall. The temperature difference was proportional to the mass flow rate due to their interaction. For the liquid flow, the convection overwhelmed the wall conduction because of the large flow of thermal mass caused by high density. The temperature difference in this case was inversely proportional to the mass flow rate. The tube diameter and heater wiring width are important design parameters, and the optimized sensor can be used to measure and control the infinitesimal liquid flow rate.
To reduce the chattering errors of reed switch sensors used for automatic remote measurement of water supply system, a reed switch sensor was analyzed and improved. The operation of reed switch sensors can be described as a mechanical contact by approximation of permanent magnet piece to generate an electrical pulse. The reed switch sensors are used in measurement application by detecting the rotational or translational displacement. To apply for flow measurement devices, the reed switch sensors should keep high reliability. They are applied for the electronic digital type of water flow meters. The reed switch sensor is just installed simply on the mechanical type flow meter. A small magnet is attached on a pointer of the water meter counter rotor. Inside the reed sensor, two steel leaf springs make mechanical contact and apart as rotation of flow meter counter. The counting electrical contact pulses can be converted as the water flow amount. The MCU sends the digital flow rate data to the server using the wireless communication network. But it occurs data difference or errors by chattering noise. The reed switch sensor contains chattering error by it self at the force equivalent position. The vibrations such as passing car near to the switch sensor installed location. In order to reduce chattering error, most system uses just software methods for example using filter and also statistical calibration methods. The chattering errors were reduced by changing leaf spring structure using mechanical hysteresis characteristics.

During the measurement of the flow rate of gases such as natural gas, flow hunting is observed in most orifice meters but the intensity of flow hunting at each metering system shows different characteristics. In order to investigate why such a difference occurs and whether the difference actually influences metering error, pipeline network analysis on the main factors and characteristics of flow hunting was carried out in a previous study. Following this, in this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was carried out to clarify the relation between flow instability and flow hunting and determine the factors influencing the orifice meter depending on the intensity of upward pressure fluctuation, time interval, and flow rate. Finally, we showed that the pressure hunting rate is a function of the ratio of the pressure difference before and after an orifice meter. On the basis of CFD analysis results, we also presented some major factors and relations influencing flow hunting.

KOGAS(Korea Gas Corporation) has about a hundred of local stations to supply natural gas to the city gas companies and the power stations. As some severe flow fluctuation phenomena are observed in several governor stations, the investigation about the reasons and factors which are relating to flow fluctuation has been started. Some field surveys hav been carried out and experimental studies have been performed to find the fluctuation mechanism. As a result, it is found that the flow fluctuation is related with the length of straight pipe in front of the meter, the size of the header pipe and the variation of demand at the city gas company and the power station. Furthermore. it is also proved that both the length of the transmitter cable and the status of the coating of signal transmission cable do not affect flow fluctuation, but the measurement range of the differential pressure transmitter influences flow fluctuation. On the other hand, as the averaging the flow fluctuation is converged to less than 0.1 % in almost all of the cases, it is concluded that the quantity of flow fluctuation do not relates to metering accuracy directly.

A new adaptive TMS variable area flow meter that is used to the environment measuring equipment is proposed. This system is consist of a ball moving within the tube line which corresponds to gas flow and photo sensor array which monitoring the movement of ball. This system can monitoring the position of bali in case of the very few gas flow in various levels. And it can automatically adjust the gas flow at the highest and the lowest level to prevent the tube line blockage.

Most of the nuclear power plants(NPPs) adopts pressure difference type flow meters such as venturi and orifice meters for the measurement of feedwater flow rates to calculate reactor thermal power. However, corrosion products in the feedwater deposits on the flow meter by fouling as operating time goes. These effects lead to severe errors in the flow indication and then determination of reactor thermal power. The averaging BDFT, which has developed by Yun et al., has a potentiality to minimize this problem thanks to its inherent measurement principle. Therefore, it is expected that the averaging BDFT can replace the venturi meter for the feedwater pipe of steam generator of NPPs. The present work compares the amplification factor, K, based on CFD calculation against the K obtained from experiments in order to confirm whether a commercial CFD code can be applicable to the evaluation of characteristic for the averaging BDFT. In addition to this, the simulations to take into account of fouling effect are also carried out by rough wall option. The results show that the averaging BDFT is a promising flow meter for the accurate measurement of flow rates in the fouling condition of the NPPs.

In a gasoline engine, the characteristics of air flow is very important not only for the design of the intake system geometry bout also for the accurate measurement of the induction air mass. In this study, an air flow rate measurement of the induction air mass. In this study, an air flow rate measurement was conducted by using the hot wire flow meter at the upstream of the intake port and the throttle. At the upstream of the throttle, the overshoot phenomena of the air flow rate by fast throttle opening were analyzed with choked flow. At the upstream of the intake port, the cylinder variation of the air flow rate and the difference between fast throttle opening and closing were showed during the unsteady state by the throttle step change. The results of this study can be used for the design of the throttle valve geometry and cylinder by cylinder control.
In contracts for sales of natural gas between sellers and buyers, it is not suncient to only measure a volumetric quantity of gas in flowing conditions in metering station. Therefore the measured volumetric quantity must be converted to that of reference conditions. The density of the natural gas required in such a calculation can be measured directly or estimated from the equation of sate or any other experimental methods. The specific gravity meter is the apparatus used to measure the density of fluids under the reference conditions and it can be widely used in industrial areas, especially in massive flow rate natural gas industry. This study has been carried out in an attempt to improve measurement accuracy of natural gas flow rate calculation, providing the adequate installation and proper operation conditions of specific gravity meter. The test results are 1) the density measurement errors in case of using methane and standard gas as calibration gases are smaller than using methane and nitrogen gas, 2) the periodical calibration to maintain accurate density measurements is essential, and 3) the specific gravity meter is sensitive to changes of environmental conditions, especially environmental temperature surrounding the specific gravity meter.
