In contrast to all-time flooded small modular reactor (SMR) systems, an in-kind flooding safety system (FSS) has been proposed as a passive safety system applicable to small modular reactors (SMRs) that adopt a metal containment vessel (MCV). Under transient conditions, the FSS can provide emergency cooling to dry reactor cavities and sustain long-term coolability using re-acquired evaporated steam in the reactor building on demand. When designing an FSS, the effect of the flooding flow area is vital as it affects the overall accident sequence and safety. Therefore, in this study, a MELCOR model of a reference SMR is developed and numerical analysis is performed under postulated accident scenarios. Without flooding, the MCV pressure of the reactor module exceeds the design pressure before core damage. To prevent core damage, an emergency flooding strategy is devised using various flow path parameters and requirements to ensure an adequate emergency coolant supply before the core damage is investigated. The results indicate that a flow area exceeding 0.02 m2 is required in the FSS to prevent MCV overpressure and core damage. This study is the first to report a strategic analysis for appropriately sizing an FSS flooding valve applicable to innovative SMRs.

In this study, the characteristics of crop damage area by flooding for 113 middle range watersheds during 2000-2016 were analyzed and future crop damage area by flooding were analyzed using 13 GCM outputs such as hourly maximum rainfall, 10-min maximum rainfall, number of days of 80 mm/day, daily rainfall maximum, annual rainfall amount associated with RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenarios and watershed characteristic data such as DEM, urbanization ratio, population density, asset density, road improvement ratio, river improvement ratio, drainage system improvement ratio, pumping capacity, detention basin capacity, and crop damage area by flooding. A constrained multiple linear regression model was used to construct the relationships between the crop damage area by flooding and other variables. Future flood index related to crop damage may mainly increase in the Mankyung watershed, Southwest part of Youngsan and Sumjin river basin and Southern part of Nackdong river basin. Results are useful to identify watersheds which need to establish strategies for responding to future flood damage.

To improve maritime safety, it is very important not only to make safer design and operation but also to do proper response in case of maritime casualty. The large-scaled casualties will be caused by loss of structural strength and stability due to the progressive flooding and enlargement of damage by the effect of waves and wind. To prevent foundering and structural failure, the prediction of ship motion behavior of damaged ship in wave is necessary. This paper describes the motion behavior of damaged ship in waves through theoretical and experimental studies. A time domain theoretical model of damaged ship motions and accidental flooding, which can be applied to any type of ship or arrangement and considers the effects of flooding of compartments, has been developed. The model tests have been carried out in regular and irregular waves with different wave heights and directions in ship motion basin. Those were performed for three different damaged conditions such as engine room bottom damage, side shell damage and bow visor damage of a Ro-Ro ship. Comparison of theoretical and experimental results was performed.

Urban flooding occurs in the form of internal-water inundation on roads and lowlands due to heavy rainfall. Unlike in the case of rivers, inundation in urban areas there is lacking in research on predicting and warning through measurement data. In order to analyze urban flood patterns and prevent damage, it is necessary to analyze flooding measurement data for various rainfalls. In this study, the pattern of urban flooding caused by rainfall was analyzed by utilizing the urban flooding measuring sensor, which is being test-run in the flood prone zone for urban flooding management. For analysis, 2019 rainfall data, surface water depth data, and water level data of a street inlet (storm water pipeline) were used. The analysis showed that the amount of rainfall that causes flooding in the target area was identified, and the timing of inundation varies depending on the rainfall pattern. The results of the analysis can be used as verification data for the urban inundation limit rainfall under development. In addition, by using rainfall intensity and rainfall patterns that affect the flooding, it can be used as data for establishing rainfall criteria of urban flooding and predicting that may occur in the future.
In this study, dual drainage system based runoff model was established for W-drainage area in G-si, and considering the various rainfall characteristics determined using Huff and Mononobe methods, the degree of flooding in the target area was analyzed and the risk was compared and analyzed through the risk matrix method. As a result, the Monobe method compared to the Huff method was analyzed to be suitable analysis for flooding of recent heavy rain, and the validity of the dynamic risk assessment considering the weight of the occurrence probability as the return period was verified through the risk matrix-based analysis. However, since the definition and estimating criteria of the flood risk matrix proposed in this study are based on the return period for extreme rainfall and the depth of flooding according to the results of applying the dual drainage model, there is a limitation in that it is difficult to consider the main factors which are direct impact on inland flooding such as city maintenance and life protection functions. In the future, if various factors affecting inland flood damage are reflected in addition to the amount of flood damage, the flood risk matrix concept proposed in this study can be used as basic information for preparation and prevention of inland flooding, as well as it is judged that it can be considered as a major evaluation item in the selection of the priority management area for sewage maintenance for countermeasures against inland flooding.

The study used the simplified flooding analysis model, SIMOD, to distribute the total flood discharge by time, so research on flooding in urban areas can be conducted. The conventional flooding analysis models have limitations in constructing input data and take a long time for analysis. However, SIMOD is useful because it supports rapid decision-making process using quick modeling based on simple hydrological data, such as topography and inflow flood of the study area, to analyze submerged routes formed by flooding. Therefore, the study used the SIMOD model to analyze flooding in urban areas before conducting a comparative study with the outputs from FLO-2D, which is one of the conventional flooding analysis models, to identify the model's applicability. Seongseoje was selected as the study area, as it is located downstream the Geumho river where streams flow in the adjacent areas, and dikes are high enough to apply the "Overflow and Break" scenario for urban areas. With regard to topography, the study applied DEM data for the conventional flooding analysis and DSM data to represent urban building communities, distribution of roads, etc. Input flood discharge was calculated by applying the rectangular weir equation under the bank and break scenario through a 200-year return period of a design flood level. Comparative analysis was conducted in a flooded area with a simulation time of 1-24 hours. The time for the 24-hour simulation in SIMOD was less than 7 minutes. Compared with FLO-2D, the difference in flooded areas was less than 20%. Furthermore, the study identified the need for topography data using DSM for urban areas, as the analysis result that applies DSM showed the influence of roads and buildings.
The existing flooding Probabilistic Safety Analysis(PSA) was updated to reflect the Korean plant specific operating experience data into the flooding frequency to improve the PSA quality. Both the Nuclear Power Experience(NPE) database and the Korea Nuclear Pipe Failure Database(NuPIPE) databases were used in this study, and from these databases, only the Pressurized Water Reactor(PWR) data were used for the flooding frequencies of the flooding areas in the primary auxiliary building. With these databases and a Bayesian method, the flooding frequencies for the flooding areas were estimated. Subsequently, the Core Damage Frequency(CDF) for the flooding PSA of the Ulchin(UCN) unit 3 and 4 plants based on the Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant(KSNP) internal full-power PSA model was recalculated. The evaluation results showed that sixteen flooding events are potentially significant according to the screening criterion, while there were two flooding events exceeding the screening criterion of the existing UCN 3 and 4 flooding PSA. The result was compared with two kinds of cases: (1) the flooding frequency and CDF from the method of the existing flooding PSA with the PWR and Boiled Water Reactor(BWR) data of the NPE database and the Maximum Likelihood Estimate(MLE) method and (2) the flooding frequency and CDF with the NPE database(PWR and BWR data), NuPIPE database, and a Bayesian method. From the comparison, a difference in CDF results was revealed more clearly between the CDF from this study and case (2) than between case (1) and case (2). That is, the number of flooding events exceeding the screen criterion further increased when only the PWR data were used for the primary auxiliary building than when the Korean specific data were used.
In recent years, the frequency and scale of the natural disasters are growing rapidly due to the global climate change. In case of the urban flooding, high-density of population and infrastructure has caused the more intensive damages. In this study, we analyzed the spatial characteristics of urban flooding damage factors using GWR(Geographically Weighted Regression) for effective disaster prevention and then, classified the causes of the flood damage by spatial characteristics. The damage factors applied consists of natural variables such as the poor drainage area, the distance from the river, elevation and slope, and anthropogenic variables such as the impervious surface area, urbanized area, and infrastructure area, which are selected by literature review. This study carried out the comparative analysis between OLS(Ordinary Least Square) and GWR model for identifying spatial non-stationarity and spatial autocorrelation, and in the results, GWR model has higher explanation power than OLS model. As a result, it appears that there are some differences between each of the flood damage areas depending on the variables. We conclude that the establishment of disaster prevention plan for urban flooding area should reflect the spatial characteristics of the damaged areas. This study provides an improved understandings of the causes of urban flood damages, which can be diverse according to their own spatial characteristics.
This study applied satellite radar imagery to identify flooded areas and examined post-flooding conditions using time-series satellite radar imagery for the development of flood damage mitigation strategies. Using time-series satellite radar images, this study constructed a map delineating areas vulnerable to frequent flood damage. The extracted flooded areas were combined with reference land use maps to examine flood damage by land use type. Major landuse types with severe flood damage were agricultural and forested areas. The analysis of the damage conditions, in terms of land use, served as the basis for developing flood damage mitigation policies, in conjunction with land use planning. The policies for flood damage mitigation can be summarized as land use regulations, land use planning, and flood damage mapping. A preventive measure to minimize flood damage of properties, which regulates developing areas with high flooding potential, is highly recommended. Although this study suggested a number of policies for flood damage mitigation, they represent only a small number of possible policies useful for mitigating flood damage and other environmental problems. Based upon the results of this study, it may be concluded that satellite radar imagery has great potential in providing basic data for large-scale environmental problems such as flooding and oil spills. Nevertheless, further examinations should be conducted and the application of satellite radar imagery should be used to examine other environmental problems.

Recently, it has been strangely increasing rainfall and rainfall meter by global warming. so flood damage is being increase. It has happened there are so many damaged by influence by backwater of dam. However, the alleviative solutions of flood damages are focused on the lower river basin where the density of population is higher than upper river basin. This research proceeds based on design and build 3D topography model and reflects the topographical factors of upper river basin. It also simulated the circumstances of flooding by investigation of factors of outflow, hence, as a result, we would find out the vulnerable area for flooding and scale of damages effectively. This research suggests the solution and method of flooding for vulnerable area of the flooding to reduce the damages by predicting flooding. Thus, the suggestion may support to make a decision efficiently to prevent the damage of flooding.
