An experimental study is made to improve the efficiency of floating breakwaters. Wave transmission coefficients highly depend on the drafts of the floating breakwaters but not on the mooting chain weights. Array of two breakwaters can improve the efficiency of the floating breakwaters. Proper draft combination of the fore and the aft bodies may improve the performance of the floating breakwaters lot various wave periods.

This paper is concerned with the analysis of wave reflection and transmission from multiple floating breakwaters. Linear potential theory was used for modeling wave field, and the behaviors of the floating breakwaters was represented as linearized equation of motions. The boundary value problem for the wave field was discretized by Galerkin technique. The radiation condition at infinity was modeled as infinite elements developed by Park et al.(1991). The validation of the developed model was given through the comparison with hydraulic experimental data conducted by Park et al.(2000). The possibility for the application of multiple floating breakwaters was also discussed based on the numerical experiments.

Ocean space utilization using VLFS(Very Large Floating Structures) can provide environmental impact free space by allowing sea water flow freely through the floating structure. Use of Pontoon type VLFS for that purpose needs employment of breakwaters for reduction of wave effects. Therefore, in order to maximize advantage of environmental impact free structure, the breakwater should be the one that can allow water flow freely through it, too. In this paper hydroelastic response of a pontoon type structure is analyzed considering breakwaters which allow water flow through its opening at bottom of the breakwaters. Mode superposition technique is used for solving equation of flexible body while interactions between the pontoon and breakwaters is considered based on generalized mode concept. Bi-quadratic nine node higher-order boundary element method is adopted for more accurate numerical treatment near sharp edged body shape. Performance of various combinations of breakwaters is investigated.

The water wave characteristics of Bragg reflections from a train of fixed floating pontoon breakwaters was studied numerically. A numerical model of boundary discretization type was developed to calculate the wave field. The model was verified by comparing to analytical data in literature and good agreements were achieved. Series of parametric studies were conducted systematically to investigate the dependence of the reflected coefficients by the Bragg scattering on the design variables, including the spacing between the breakwaters, the total number of installed breakwaters, the draft and width do the breakwater, and wave length. Certain wave characteristics of the Bragg reflections were observed and discussed in details which might be of help for practical engineering applications in shoreline protection from incident waves.

The numerical investigations on the wave-screening characteristics of floating breakwaters are presented. The fluid motion is idealized as linearized, two dimensional potential flow. A finite element model is adopted to analyze the performance of floating breakwaters. Numerical experiments are carried out for two type floating breakwater. One is a conventional pontoon type breakwater with rectangular cross-section, and the other is a side float breakwater which consists of two rectangular shaped floats connected to each other by a frame. To improve the performance of the floating breakwaters, especially for long-period wave conditions, numerical experiments are carried out for the cases attaching the thin plates at the bottom of folats in the vertical direction.

A numerical investigation was made to examine characteristics of rectangular pontoon type floating breakwaters in oblique waves. Sway and heave wave exciting forces, roll moment acting on the floating breakwater and three motion reponses decrease as the incident wave angle increases for the most of the wave ranges. There exists a minimum wave transmission coefficient which is a function of wave frequency. In short wave range wave transmission coefficient increases as the incident wave angle increases. In long wave range, however, wave transmission coefficient decreases as the wave incident angle increases.

A numerical scheme is proposed which is applicable to the evaluation of wave field containing floating structures, and the method is utilized to estimate the effect of the floating breakwaters to be installed in Wonjeon port near Masan. The model is based on the mild-slope equation which is widely accepted for the calculation of wave modulation near shores and an additional term is introduced to consider the wave scattering associated with the thin floating structures such as floating breakwaters. The tranquility in Wonjeon port with the floating breakwater in the east side is calculated and compared with the one with a bottom-fixed breakwater. The present method is believed to provide an efficient way of quantitative measurement of the performance of floating breakwaters.

The wave attenuation by floating breakwaters in high amplitude waves, which can lead to wave overtopping and breaking, is examined by numerical simulations. The governing equations, the Navier-Stokes equations and the continuity equation, are calculated in a fixed Cartesian grid system. The body boundaries are defined by the line segment connecting the points where the grid line and body surface meet. No-slip and divergence free conditions are satisfied at the body boundary cell. The nonlinear waves near the moving body is defined using the modified marker-density method. To verify the present numerical method, vortex induced vibration on an elastically mounted cylinder and free roll decay are numerically simulated and the results are compared with those reported in the literature. Using the present numerical method, the wave attenuations by three kinds of floating breakwaters are simulated numerically in a regular wave to compare the performance.

The floating breakwater generally has an excellent water exchanging capability, but with some lowering harbor tranquility due to the wave transmission underneath floating body. In the initial stage of design, it is thus required to investigate several alternatives of breakwater layout for their performance of harbor tranquility. The present study aims to formulate a sort of reflection-transmission boundary condition of floating breakwater so that the existing numerical method using time dependent mild slope equation can still be applied to the case of floating breakwaters. The two and three dimensional tests were each performed to demonstrate the performance of the boundary condition. It was found that the reflection and transmission characteristics around the breakwater were well reproduced by the boundary condition. Finally, the reflection-transmission boundary condition were applied to a floating breakwater installed in an imaginary harbor with an irregular shape and bottom topography. The results surely showed that the present numerical method can effectively used in practical works related to the real sea construction of floating breakwaters.

An experimental and numerical investigation was made to examine the characteristics of pontoon type floating breakwaters(FBW) in regular waves. Motion responses of FBW and wave transmission coefficients are observed and compared with the results based on the linear potential theory. The linear potential theory is found to be a successful tool to investigate the characteristics of the floating breakwaters. We confirm that there exists a minimum wave transmission coefficient which is a function of wave-length/beam and beam/draft ratio. As beam/draft ratio increases the value of wave-length/beam ratio where the minimum, wave transmission coefficient occurs increases. Excessive mooring stiffness can deteriorate the performance of the floating breakwaters.
