Previous method of computer simulation to predict the dynamic response of a vehicle has been based on the assumption that vehicle structure is rigid. If the flexibility of the vehicle structure becomes too large to ignore, rigid body assumption will no longer give good estimation of the dynamic characteristics. Therefore, in order to predict more precise vehicle dynamic characteristics, flexible multi-body dynamic analysis of a vehicle is necessary. This paper investigates dynamic characteristics of vehicle systems with flexible frames numerically. Joint reaction forces, vertical accelerations, pitch accelerations are analyzed for the vehicle systems with various flexible frames using multi-body dynamic analysis code and finite element analysis code.

This paper presents a systematic formulation for the kinematic and dynamic analysis of flexible multibody systems. The system equations of motion are derived in terms of relative and elastic coordinates using velocity transformation technique. The position transformation equations that relate the relative and elastic coordinates to the Cartesian coordinates for the two contiguous flexible bodies are derived. The velocity transformation matrix is derived systematically corresponding to the type of kinematic joints connecting the bodies and system path matrix. This matrix is employed to represent the equations of motion in relative coordinate space. Two examples are taken to test the method developed here.
The coupled free vibration of flexible structures and on-board liquid in zero gravity space was analyzed, considering the spacecraft main body as a rigid mass, the flexible appendages as two elastic beams, and the on-board liquid as a "spring-mass" system. Using the Lagrangians of a rigid mass (spacecraft main body), "spring-mass" (liquid), and two beams (flexible appendages), as well as assuming symmetric motion of the system, we obtained the frequency equations of the coupled system by applying Rayleigh-Ritz method. Solving these frequency equations, which are governed by three system parameters, as an eigenvalue problem, we obtained the coupled natural frequencies and vibration modes. We define the parameter for evaluating the magnitudes of coupled motions of the added mass (liquid) and beam (appendages). It was found that when varying one system parameter, the frequency curves veer, vibration modes exchange, and the significant coupling occurs not in the region closest to the two frequency curves but in the two regions separate from that region.
The laminating technique for developing flexible liquid crystal display was demonstrated by using a thin UV curable polymer film and a plastic substrate with patterned polymer wall structure. We adopted the rigid wall structure to provide a solid mechanical support for the stable molecular alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) in the device. The cover film was prepared to have an ability of aligning LC molecules by patterning a micro-groove structure using the soft-lithographic process. These two substrates can be assembled tightly by the laminating and one-step UV irradiation process because of the adhesive nature of the used UV curable polymers. Proposed method can be used to fabricate the flexible LC display with simplicity and also be applicable for a cost-effective roll-to-roll process.
In the design and operation of robot arms with flexible links, the equations of motion are required to exactly model the interaction between rigid motion and elastic motion and to be formulated efficiently. Thus, the flexible link is represented on the basis of the D-H rigid link representation to measure the elastic deformation. The equations of motion of robot arms, which are configured by the generalized coordinates of elastic and rigid degrees of freedom, are formulated by using F.E.M. to model complex shaped links systematically and by eliminating elastic mode of higher order that does not largely affect motion to reduce the number of elastic degree of freedom. Finally, presented is the result of simulation to flexible robotic arm whose joints are controlled by direct or PD control,

The method of analyzing flexible mechanisms with clearances was studied considering flexibility of beams in the mechanism using finite elements. Both ends of a beam were modeled as free following Dubowsky's impact pair model. Instead some force constraints were imposed at imposed at the connections between adjoining links. Coulomb model has been developed using dry frictions in place of tangential damping forces in the impact pair model and the contact compliance and damping coefficient approximated in a form of root function were used. As examples, impacts of a rigid ball in a cylinder, impact beam model and four-bar mechanisms made up of three flexible links with clearance connections were simulated numerically. The results from examples showed similar but a little bit smaller magnitude of impact forces compared with published studies.

Research on the forced vibration control of a flexible GFR composite beam using $\mu$-synthesis is performed on this paper. Modal analysis method and modal coordinates are introduced to obtain the state equations of the structural system. Using these equations, Robust control algorithm using $\mu$-synthesis is adopted to suppress the forced vibration of a flexible beam since the designed controller can considered plant uncertainty and external disturbance. Constant disturbance which is generated by shaking the flexible beam as I's natural frequency is effectively rejected by a PZT actuator. Simulations and experiments are carried out with the designed controller and effectiveness of forced vibration suppression strategy is verified by results.

On a refrigeration compressor, damage of a discharge valve is one of the annoying troubles for an engineer. Small size compressors, having ring plate type discharge valve are recently used. Therefore, it is very important for engineers to measure and analyze strains of discharge valve. The purpose of this study is to obtain the basic data of the strain of the flexible ring valve. Measurements were performed by the strain gauge bonded on the surface of the flexible ring valve. Stress and strain of the valve were calculated by the method of uniformly loaded circular plates with a central hole. The results obtained are as follows; (1) the strain of flexible ring discharge valve in refrigeration compressor was influenced by tension and compression strain simultaneously. (2) for a given discharge pressure, the tangential and radial strains was increased with increasing discharge pressure. (3) the valve of radial strain was larger than that of tangential strain.

An accurate tip position control of a single-link flexible manipulator subjected to torque disturbance is achieved by utilizing so called sliding mode controller with disturbance estimation (SMCDE). After formulating the governing equation of motion in the state 1pace representation, a stable sliding surface is designed via the LQR method. The SMCDE is then synthesized by integrating equivalent sliding mode controller with the disturbance estimator which is featured by an integrated average value of the imposed disturbance over a certain sampling period. The regulating tip motion of the flexible manipulator is evaluated by employing the proposed SMCDE.

Force control of a planar two-link structurally flexible robotic manipulator is considered in this study. The dynamic model is obtained by using the extended Hamilton's principle and the Galerkin criterion. A method is pressented toobtain the linearized equations of motion in Cartesian space for use in designing the control system. The approachto solving the control problem is to use feedforward and feedback control torques. The feedforward torques maneuver the flexible manipulatro along a nominal trajectory and the feedback torques minimize any deviations from the nominal trajectory. The linear quadratic Gaussian/loop transfer recovery (LQG/LTR) design methodology is explotied to design a robust feedback control system that can handle modeling errors and sensor noise, and operates on Cartesian space trajectory errors. The Lqg/LTR compenstaor together with a feedforward ollp is used to control the flexible manipulator. Simulated results are presented for a numerical example.
