  • Here, we present a new framework for histogram equalization in which both local and global contrasts are enhanced using neighborhood metrics. When checking neighborhood information, filters can simultaneously improve image quality. Filters are chosen depending on image properties, such as noise removal and smoothing. Our experimental results confirmed that this does not increase the computational cost because the filtering process is done by our proposed arrangement of making the histogram while checking neighborhood metrics simultaneously. If the two methods, i.e., histogram equalization and filtering, are performed sequentially, the first method uses the original image data and next method uses the data altered by the first. With combined histogram equalization and filtering, the original data can be used for both methods. The proposed method is fully automated and any spatial neighborhood filter type and size can be used. Our experiments confirmed that the proposed method is more effective than other similar techniques reported previously.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive contrast control method for the flat real-time processing. The proposed method has employed probability density function(PDF) in order to control a sudden change in image-brightness. In addition, the proposed algerian obtains the maximum contrast without affecting the processed image. In order to reduce hardware complexity, we have utilized approximated CDF based on sampling values. Visual test and standard deviation of their histogram have been introduced to evaluate the resultant output images of at: proposed method and the original ones.

  • We estimated the quantity of the scum remaining on the Black Matrix (BM) surface of color filter. To do this, histogram was analyzed which was obtained from AFM image of the BM surface. We divided the histogram to two Gaussian functions of the free BM surface (1) and the scum (2), and calculated the areas ($a_1$, $a_2$) of both the Gaussian functions. We quantified the residue as the ratio of the area ($a_2/(a_1+a_2)$). As a result of the Gaussian functions of the free BM surface, it was revealed that another kind of residue remained on the BM surface. It was difficult to quantify it. but it could relatively be estimated from the average height and the standard deviation.

  • This study investigated the depositional environment of the area of Anmyeondo in the mid-western coast of Korea. A total of 142 surface sediments were analyzed, and leveling survey was conducted as well in 12 transects at the sandy tidal flat in the area. The surface sediments are classified into several different types (slightly gravelly Sand, Sand, slightly gravelly sandy Mud, etc.) and they show fining-distribution toward the offshore. Textural parameters are characterized by being coarse, well sorted, positively skewed in the supratidal and intertidal flat, whereas being finer, poorly sorted, negatively skewed in the subtidal flat. According to the C-M diagram, the sediment transport modes are characterized by the mixed mode of bedload and graded suspension in supratidal and intertidal flat, and by graded suspension or uniform suspension in the subtidal flat. Histogram shows a bimodal distribution in the lower subtidal flat which is indicative of two sediment transport modes.

  • In this paper, we have proposed an image contrast control method using brightness preserving on the FPD(Flat Panel Display). The proposed method can be easily applied to the FPD required real-time processing, since hardware complexity is greatly reduced using linear approximation method of CDF(Cumulative Density Function). For effective processing of the proposed algorithm, we have utilized the sample value of CDF and Barrel Shift. Visual test and standard deviation of their histogram have been introduced to evaluate the resultant output images of the pro-posed method and the original ones.

  • The chest X-ray image cannot be focused in the same manner that optical lenses are and the resultant image generally tends to be slightly blurred. Therefore, the methods to improve the quality of chest X-ray image have been studied. In this paper, the inherent noises of the input images are suppressed by adding the Laplacian image to the original. First, the chest X-ray image using an Gaussian high pass filter and an optimal high frequency emphasis filter has shown improvements in the edges and contrast of flat areas. Second, using fuzzy logic_histogram equalization, each pixel of the chest X-ray image shows the normal distribution of intensities that are not overexposed. As a result, the proposed method has shown the enhanced edge and contrast of the images with the noise canceling effect.

  • In this paper, a HDR algorithm for a single image is proposed using the exposure fusion, that adaptively calculates gamma correction coefficients according to the image distribution. Since typical HDR methods should use at least three images with different exposure values at the same scene, the main problem was that they could not be applied at the single shot image. Thus, HDR enhancements based on a single image using tone mapping and histogram modifications were recently presented, but these created some location-specific noises due to improper corrections. Therefore, the proposed algorithm calculates proper gamma coefficients according to the distribution of the input image and generates different exposure images which are corrected by the dark and the bright region stretching. A HDR image reproduction controlling exposure fusion weights among the gamma corrected and the original pixels is presented. As the result, the proposed algorithm can reduce certain noises at both the flat and the edge areas and obtain subjectively superior image quality to that of conventional methods.

  • For a next generation PET that realizes high sensitivity and high resolution, we proposed a design of a depth of interaction detector. A unit of the detector is constructed of four stages rectangular blocks of 2 by 2 Gd$_2$SiO$\sub$5/: Ce (GSO) crystal array optically coupled to position sensitive photomultiplier tube (PS-PMT). The 256ch flat panel PS-PMT is under development by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K., JAPAN. It has large cathode area, 51.7 by 51.7 mm$^2$, and the ratio of the effective area to external size is about 90%. The feature will contribute high packing fraction, accordingly high sensitivity. The 256 anodes are arranged in 16 by 16 at intervals of 3.0 mm. So as to evaluate the detector capability for identifying crystal of interaction, we got positioning image histograms with coupling a 16 by 5 array of GSO crystals, 2.9 by 2.9 by 7.5 mm$^3$, to the PS-PMT by irradiating a gamma ray uniformly from a point source. Flat panel PS-PMT is a new promising device for PET. We need to evaluate it if its performance is sufficiency. The performance was compared to the one with a 16ch PS-PMT.

  • The pixel-based processing of an image refers to a process of converting a value of one pixel only depending on the value of the current pixel, regardless of the value of another pixel. Pixel-based processing is used as the most basic operation in many fields such as image conversion, image enhancement, and image synthesis. There are processing methods such as arithmetic operation, histogram smoothing, and contrast stretching. In this paper, in order to clearly distinguish the tidal flat region from the tidal flat image of the west coast taken with a drone, we seek a method to find an efficient outline using pixel-based processing in the boundary detection part of the pre-processing process.

  • In this paper, we have proposed the contrast control method using brightness preserving on the FPD(Flat Panel Display). The proposed algorithms consist of three blocks: the contrast enhancement, the white-level-expander, and the black-level-expander. The proposed method has employed probability density function in order to control the brightness of the image changed extremely. In order for real-time processing, we have calculated cumulative density function using the linear approximation method. The image histogram and image quality were compared with the conventional image enhancement algorithms. The proposed methods have been used in display devices that need image enhancement such as LCD TV, PDP, and FPD.
