Detection of an Impact Flash Candidate on the Moon with an Educational Telescope System

  • At the suggestion of the NASA Meteoroid Environment Office (NASA/MEO), which promotes lunar impact monitoring worldwide during NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) mission period (launched Sept. 2013), we set up a video observation system for lunar impact flashes using a 16-inch educational telescope at Chungnam National University. From Oct. 2013 through Apr. 2014, we recorded 80 hours of video observation of the unilluminated part of the crescent moon in the evening hours. We found a plausible candidate impact flash on Feb. 3, 2014 at selenographic longitude $2.1^{\circ}$ and latitude $25.4^{\circ}$. The flash lasted for 0.2 s and the light curve was asymmetric with a slow decrease after a peak brightness of $8.7{\pm}0.3mag$. Based on a star-like distribution of pixel brightness and asymmetric light curve, we conclude that the observed flash was due to a meteoroid impact on the lunar surface. Since unequivocal detection of an impact flash requires simultaneous observation from at least two sites, we strongly recommend that other institutes and universities in Korea set up similar inexpensive monitoring systems involving educational or amateur telescopes, and that they collaborate in the near future.

  • 홍수는 자연재해 중 가장 일반적이며 빈번하게 발생한다. 일반적으로 홍수는 수일간에 걸친 강우에 의하여 발생하지만 집중호우에 의한 돌발홍수는 단 시간에 발생하는 특징이 있다. 본 논문은 지리정보시스템으로 지형자료를 취득한 후 지형기후학적 순간단위유량도로 산악에서 돌발홍수예측을 위한 지리정보시스템의 적용에 관한 연구이다. 본 연구에서의 돌발홍수 발생 범위는 수심이 0.5m, 0.7m, 1.0m 로 설정하였다. 또한, 지속시간별-강우량별 홍수량 조견표를 작성하여 홍수대피 기준을 제안하였다. 본 연구는 기존의 획일된 경보 발령시스템에 비하여 유역에 적합한 기준을 제시하여 지형정보를 고려한 경보발령시스템에 적용이 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

연결기반 명령어 실행을 이용한 재구성 가능한 IoT를 위한 온칩 플래쉬 메모리의 클라우드화 (Cloudification of On-Chip Flash Memory for Reconfigurable IoTs using Connected-Instruction Execution)

  • The IoT-driven large-scaled systems consist of connected things with on-chip executable embedded software. These light-weighted embedded things have limited hardware space, especially small size of on-chip flash memory. In addition, on-chip embedded software in flash memory is not easy to update in runtime to equip with latest services in IoT-driven applications. It is becoming important to develop light-weighted IoT devices with various software in the limited on-chip flash memory. The remote instruction execution in cloud via IoT connectivity enables to provide high performance software execution with unlimited software instruction in cloud and low-power streaming of instruction execution in IoT edge devices. In this paper, we propose a Cloud-IoT asymmetric structure for providing high performance instruction execution in cloud, still low power code executable thing in light-weighted IoT edge environment using remote instruction execution. We propose a simulated approach to determine efficient partitioning of software runtime in cloud and IoT edge. We evaluated the instruction cloudification using remote instruction by determining the execution time by the proposed structure. The cloud-connected instruction set simulator is newly introduced to emulate the behavior of the processor. Experimental results of the cloud-IoT connected software execution using remote instruction showed the feasibility of cloudification of on-chip code flash memory. The simulation environment for cloud-connected code execution successfully emulates architectural operations of on-chip flash memory in cloud so that the various software services in IoT can be accelerated and performed in low-power by cloudification of remote instruction execution. The execution time of the program is reduced by 50% and the memory space is reduced by 24% when the cloud-connected code execution is used.

임베디드 플래시 파일시스템을 위한 순위별 지움 정책 (A Ranking Cleaning Policy for Embedded Flash File Systems)

  • 최근 정보 산업과 이동통신 기술이 발전함에 따라 PDA(personal digital assistant), HPC(hand-held PC), 세탑박스(set-top box), 정보가전 등의 임베디드 시스템(embedded system)이 개발되고 있으며, 이러한 시스템을 운영할 실시간 운영체제(RTOS)와파일시스템의 요구는 필수적이다. 휴대의 용이성과 빠른 접근시간, 저전력을 요구하는 임베드 시스템의 특성상 데이터를 저장하기 위한 저장 매체로 하드디스크(hard disk)를 이용하는 것은 비효율적이며, 플래시 메모리(flash memory)가 주로 사용되고 있다. 플래시 메모리는 비휘발성과 빠른 접근 시간을 갖는 장점이 있지만, 상대적으로 느린 지움 시간과 지움 회수의 한계 등은 극복해야 할 문제점이다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 단점을 보완하기 위해 새로운 순위별 지움 정책을 제안하고 성능평가를 실시한다. 지움 정책의 일반적인 역할은 플래시 메모리 공간의 어디를 언제 지울 것인가를 결정한다. 제안된 순위별 지움 정책은 지우는 비용과 한정된 지움 회수를 고려하여 지우는 광간과 시간을 결정함으로써 플래시 메모리의 수명을 최대한 연장하고 플래시 메모리 접근 및 관리의 성능을 향상시킨다. 제안된 방법은 기존의 Greedy 및 Cost-benefit 방법에 비해 저장 연산 수행에서 10%~50%의 성능 향상을 보인다.

On-Demand Remote Software Code Execution Unit Using On-Chip Flash Memory Cloudification for IoT Environment Acceleration

  • In an Internet of Things (IoT)-configured system, each device executes on-chip software. Recent IoT devices require fast execution time of complex services, such as analyzing a large amount of data, while maintaining low-power computation. As service complexity increases, the service requires high-performance computing and more space for embedded space. However, the low performance of IoT edge devices and their small memory size can hinder the complex and diverse operations of IoT services. In this paper, we propose a remote on-demand software code execution unit using the cloudification of on-chip code memory to accelerate the program execution of an IoT edge device with a low-performance processor. We propose a simulation approach to distribute remote code executed on the server side and on the edge side according to the program's computational and communicational needs. Our on-demand remote code execution unit simulation platform, which includes an instruction set simulator based on 16-bit ARM Thumb instruction set architecture, successfully emulates the architectural behavior of on-chip flash memory, enabling embedded devices to accelerate and execute software using remote execution code in the IoT environment.

K-집합 플래시 메모리 관리 성능 분석 (Performance Analysis of K-set Flash Memory Management)

  • 이 논문에서는 플래시 메모리의 특성에 따른 메모리 재활용 방법론을 제안하여 비용을 감소시키면서 동시에 성능의 감소를 방지하는 목적을 만족시키고자 한다. 새로운 방법론은 재활용 대상 메모리 세그먼트 공간을 K 개의 하부 공간으로 분할하여 전체 검색을 대신 부분 검색을 실행하여 비용의 최소화를 추구한다. 아울러, 새로운 메모리 공간 배정 결정 시 전체 플래시 메모리 공간의 균등 소거에 대한 개선책을 제안한다. 제안된 방법론의 최적화를 위하여 하부 공간 분할 크기를 실험을 통해 취득 하였다. 실험적 자료는 제안된 방법론이 기존의 방법론과 비교하였을 교 비용은 감소하고 성능은 개선되는 것을 예시한다. 또한, 실험을 통해 메모리 공간 배정이 메모리 공간의 균등 소거에 많은 영향을 미친다는 사실을 확인할 수 있다.

Design of an Alpine Skiing Game Using ActionScript 3.0

  • Flash is the most popular 2D animation and game development software, supporting vector and media technology at the core, which enables the development of small and pithy games. It is widely used in Web animation, courseware, TV commercials, game development, and other works of design. In this paper, we propose a control movement function and auxiliary functions for an alpine skiing game based on ActionScript 3.0. The control movement function is designed with moving phases (i.e., free fall, sliding, projectile, and landing). The auxiliary functions include drawing path, start/restart movement, and saving the highest score. In addition, for the visual design of our game, we designed animations in connection with a character and background. In order to facilitate testing the friction, users can input a chosen friction value. Without user input, the friction default is set at 0.97.

  • 정보통신기술의 발달로 인하여 e-learning산업은 급속히 팽창하고 있으며, 이외 함께 제작 기술의 발전도 빠르게 이루어지고 있다. 기존의 동영상 강의 제작의 큰 비중을 차지하던 Microsoft 사의 WMV(Window Media Video) 형식에서 최근에는 다른 동영상 파일에 비해 용량은 작지만 화질이 매우 우수한 포맷인 FLV(Flash video)으로 전환되고 있는 추세이다. 플래쉬 기반으로 이루어진 Flv는 윈도우, 리눅스 이외에도 대부분의 OS 환경과 브라우저에서 구동이 되며, 사용자가 별도의 플레이어 설치나 코덱 설치 과정 없이 재생을 할 수 있어 차세대 표준형, 개방형 플랫폼으로 개발자들의 관심을 끌고 있으나, 아직까지는 기존의 WMV 형식과 FLV간의 용량이나 화질의 비교, 제작시간 등에 대한 정확한 비교 분석에 관한 데이터가 나와 있지 않은 실정이다. 따라서 본 논문은 제작 방식에 따라 WMV와 FLV간의 데이터 비교 분석을 통하여 각기 특성에 맞는 제작 플랫폼을 설정하는데 가이드를 제시하고자 한다.

머신러닝을 이용한 다공형 GDI 인젝터의 플래시 보일링 분무 예측 모델 개발 (Development of Flash Boiling Spray Prediction Model of Multi-hole GDI Injector Using Machine Learning)

  • The purpose of this study is to use machine learning to build a model capable of predicting the flash boiling spray characteristics. In this study, the flash boiling spray was visualized using Shadowgraph visualization technology, and then the spray image was processed with MATLAB to obtain quantitative data of spray characteristics. The experimental conditions were used as input, and the spray characteristics were used as output to train the machine learning model. For the machine learning model, the XGB (extreme gradient boosting) algorithm was used. Finally, the performance of machine learning model was evaluated using R2 and RMSE (root mean square error). In order to have enough data to train the machine learning model, this study used 12 injectors with different design parameters, and set various fuel temperatures and ambient pressures, resulting in about 12,000 data. By comparing the performance of the model with different amounts of training data, it was found that the number of training data must reach at least 7,000 before the model can show optimal performance. The model showed different prediction performances for different spray characteristics. Compared with the upstream spray angle and the downstream spray angle, the model had the best prediction performance for the spray tip penetration. In addition, the prediction performance of the model showed a relatively poor trend in the initial stage of injection and the final stage of injection. The model performance is expired to be further enhanced by optimizing the hyper-parameters input into the model.

Single-Electron Logic Cells and SET/FET Hybrid Integrated Circuits

  • Single-electron transistor (SET)-based logic cells and SET/FET hybrid integrated circuits have been fabricated on SOI chips. The input-output voltage transfer characteristic of the SET-based complementary logic cell shows an inverting behavior where the output voltage gain is estimated to be about 1.2 at 4.2K. The SET/FET output driver, consisting of one SET and three FETs, yields a high voltage gain of 13 and power amplification with a wide-range output window for driving next circuit. Finally, the SET/FET literal gate for a multi-valued logic cell, comprising of an SET, an FET and a constant-current load, displays a periodic voltage output of high/low level multiple switching with a swing as high as 200mV. The multiple switching functionality of all the fabricated logic circuits could be enhanced by utilizing a side gate incorporated to each SET component to enable the phase control of Coulomb oscillations, which is one of the unique characteristics of the SET-based logic circuits.
