The aim of this experimental research is to investigate the conformity of the four-bolt unstiffened moment end-plate connections consisting of European steel sections which do not meet the limitations specified for beam flange width and overall beam depth in ANSI/AISC 358-10 to the requirements of seismic application. However, the connections are satisfactory with the limitations required by Turkish Earthquake Code. For this purpose, four test specimens were designed and cyclic load was applied to three specimens while one was tested under monotonic loading to provide data for the calibration of the analytical models. The moment-rotation hysteresis loops and the failure modes for all test specimens are presented. A full three-dimensional finite element model is also developed for each test specimen for use to predict their behavior and to provide a tool for generating subsequent extensive parametric studies. The test results show that all specimens performed well in terms of rotation capacity and strength. Finite element models are found to be capable of approximating the cyclic behavior of the extended end-plate connection specimens.
The ultimate bending strength and flexural ductility performance of longitudinally stiffened plate girders fabricated with mild steel were investigated utilizing nonlinear incremental finite element analysis. AASHTO LRFD (2002) design specifications were reviewed for possible application of longitudinally stiffened plate girders as compact sections. In order to investigate compact section requirements for plate girders with longitudinal stiffeners in webs, a number of full-scale plate girders were modeled and analyzed up to the collapse under pure bending condition. It was found that the slenderness of sub panel of the webs, the stiffness of longitudinal stiffeners, and the slenderness of compression flanges are key parameters governing the flexural ductility of the plate girders. It was also found from finite element analysis that longitudinally stiffened plate girder sections can satisfy compact section requirements both in full plastic moment capacity and flexural ductility requirement. New design equations have been proposed for longitudinally stiffened plate girders to be treated as compact sections.

These days, there are lots of skyscrapers being constructed in downtown areas. However, it requires columns which have a way heavier load. and far more extensive cross sections of column as well. Therefore, it is hard to lay the foundation in downtown areas. This being the case, composite columns such as CFT column are primarily being used. However, CFT column is occurred of difficult beam-column connection development and lower performance since CFT column is closed cross-section. Especially, the result of the study concerning development of connection details with CFT column and exterior diaphragms are very low in current state. In this study, through developing CFT column-H shape steel beam applicating Y shape plate, set width and depth of Y shape plate which affect structural performance of connection details applicating Y shape plate as main variables, and evaluate structural performance through experiments. And also, design Y shape plate used at experiments as setting allowable stress for tension suggested at design criteria lower than axial force of tension side flange connected Y shape plate, through shape of destruction, verify the structural safety and performance of Y shape plate.
In this study, a series of finite element analysis using LUSAS were performed in order to assess the quantitative effects of repair and retrofit of stringer in steel plate girder railway bridge with fatigue cracks. And cutoff types of end part of upper flange were considered as right-angled type and round-angled type. Also, as a method of repair and retrofit of fatigue cracks in stringer, perforation of stop-hole and installation of bracket were considered. From the analysis result, it was possible to assess the fatigue safety and fatigue life of stringer with fatigue cracks, and to estimate the stress intensity factor range in cut-off part of stringer using J-integral method. Also, according
to the method of perforation of stop-hole and installation of bracket, it was possible to calculate the crack propagation life at the cut-off part of stringer.
Hole flanging experiments are performed on flat circular plates with a hole in the center and the flangeability and fracture behaviors of TRIP steels and ferrite-Bainite duplex steels were examined. In the hole flanging, deformation by lip and petalling occurs when plates are struck by punches of various shapes and high circumferential strains induced in the target material cause radial cracking and the subsequent rotation of the affected plate material in a number of symmetric petals. In all cases, failure of the plate was due to lip fracture that results from multiple localized neckings that take place around the hole periphery where straining is most severe and a somewhat regular pattern was observed in a fracture shape. The neck characteristics in flange formation and the transition from the lip to petal mode at which fracture occurs were compared with two materials.

There are two methods commonly used in design of splice plate connection of frame structure. The one is Design by Actual Stress which can sufficiently transfer actual force to an adjacent member using rows of bolts. The other is Design by Member Strength which is able to transfer total allowable stress of effective section area to a connected member. In real design, as a matter of convenience, Standard Connection Drawings have used according to Design by Member Strength. But this method underestimate connection force in shear connection where large connection moment occured. In this study, these Design methods are compared by connection moment in shear connections. and the adequate use of them are recommended. Also In order to evaluate more accurately the actual stress of splice plate of flange on moment. connection, a new calculation method of it is recommended.

In this study, we focus on the feasibility of structural topology optimization for a steel-timber composite beam design of optimally allocating glue-laminated timbers into a web with openings under the condition of given steel flanges. The motivation of this study is to topologically take maximal stiffness harmonizing both tension and compression performance of the steel-timber composite beam and become the eco-frandly timber design for buidling members. As a result of this study, the key web-openings allocation becomes triangle spaces, i.e., empty or no materials, of optimal topologies of both a pure timber plate and a steel flange-web timber plate without web-openings. Several applicable examples verify the effectiveness of topology optimization for steel-timber beams with web-openings.

In Korea, many buildings are built with underground spaces and cast-in-place pile method is mostly applied in the temporary retaining walls for the underground space construction. A H-shaped steel section is generally embedded in the soldier pile in the C.I.P method. In this study, a new and economical section with high strength steel replacing the H-shaped section was proposed and its flexural capacity was evaluated experimentally. The new section is the concrete-filled composite section with pentagonal thin plate and thick flange plate. Test results showed that the proposed section has an excellent flexural strength and ductility.
Since the elastic buckling problem of the plate has been studied both experimentally and theoretically, the buckling loads with various boundary conditions and loads can be easily determined. Currently, flange and web design specifications are based on the buckling stress and the post-buckling strength and include a safety-factor. Therefore, this study extended suchresearch to the linear buckling theory with ideal conditions and to the ultimate state with post-buckling. The current specifications are based on elastic buckling stress; and therefore, further research on the ultimate behavior of the plate is required. The ultimate strength design concept, which allows finite deflection, is used in this studyto maximize the post-buckling strength in a steel box. An empirical equation, which provides the ultimate strength of the steel box due to the change in the slenderness and optimum rigidity, are suggested based on the experiment results. Moreover, the appropriateness of the current design specifications was analyzed and discussed.
It has long been recognized that the H-beam steel rib has many shortcomings when used as a steel support in tunneling. One of the major shortcomings is the shotcrete shadow created behind H-beam flange which eventually reduces the load bearing capacity of shotcrete shell. In many European countries, plate girder as the H-beam steel rib has been replaced by lattice girder which has many advantages over the H-beam steel rib. Successful application of the lattice girder as a steel support requires a thorough investigation on the load bearing capacity of the lattice girder. Therefore, laboratory bending and compression tests were conducted on lattice girders with the aim of investigating the load bearing capacity of the lattice girders. The results of tests show that the load bearing capacity of laIn twice girders is higher than that of H-beams, which indicates that the lattice girder can be effectively used as a support in tunneling.
