  • It is very difficult to suppress fire by rapid flame spread through flue space between flammable commodities on the rack when a fire occurs in the rack storage. At present, the fire protection system for rack storage in Korea has many issues, and the new fire protection system was designed and developed by it. A smart system using the sensor network and artificial intelligence was designed to detect fire very rapidly and track the location of a fire. In the very early stages, the system was constructed using vertical open sprinkler pipes, wet pipes, and solenoid valves to allow water to spray near fire locations. Based on the design results, the system was installed and tested, and the full-scale test was successfully completed.

  • The flow characteristics of a swirl injector were investigated with the variation of the flow condition and geometric dimensions, such as orifice length for considering the viscous effect and tangential entry port area for considering the swirl intensity. The liquid film thickness strongly influencing on the formed drop size of the spray was measured using a new technique. The film thickness measurement technique proposed here, used the attenuation of fluorescence signal near the injector exit. The breakup length that is important for the flame location as well as the spray cone angle which influences on the ignition performance was measured using a backlit stroboscopic photography technique. From the experimental results, it is found that an increase in injection pressure decreased the film thickness and breakup length, and also enlarged the spray cone angle. A decrease in orifice length and tangential entry port area has a similar tendency of thinner film thickness, shorter breakup length and larger spray cone angle. In the present study, we proposed empirical models of the flow characteristics of the swirl injectors.

  • In this paper, we propose a fire alarm system that utilizes Wi-Fi to alarm multiple people at once. This system, based on Arduino, uses smoke, flame and temperature sensor units to sense fire and send detection data to a server via wireless communication system. The server uses stored data to relay current fire situations gathered from nearby sensors to smartphones. It also automatically reports the fire using location data from sensors. Using this system, we were able to retrieve fire alarm from sensors via push notification of our smartphone. We also confirmed the establishment of linkage with sensors and automatic report of fire via SMS. From this result, the possibility of sending real-time notifications via the Internet toward nearby smartphones about disasters such as conflagration has been proven to be feasible.

  • Numerical heat/flow analysis was performed on a liquid rocket engine head with the cooling water manifold to ensure the durability of a ground test facility for heat exchanger. Through these studies, the shapes of the injector and the flow path were determined and applied to the head of the engine under development. Firing tests were conducted to verify the designed coolant manifold and no thermal damage was found on the engine-head-face. Comparing the combustion test results with the numerical analysis, the outlet temperature of coolant showed a difference of about $15^{\circ}C$. This trend is reasonable considering existence of LOX manifold, thermal barrier coating, and the actual location of flame.

  • In an attempt to apply hybrid rocket to the RATO (Rocket-Assisted Take Off) system, combustion characteristics of the non-circular grain were figured out in this study. Having larger combustion area, it was reconfirmed that the non-circular grain has advantages over regression rate, characteristic velocity and chamber pressure in which all gave higher values. Experiments were performed to understand the effect of the non-circular grain geometry over time where local regression rates depending on grain location were analyzed. It was found that the regression rate of five distinct locations were different. Partial conclusion driven was that these differences are due to the heat transfer caused by dissimilar distances from the flame layer. Besides, as combustion duration increased, the fuel port became circular, and the regression rate converged to a single value over the whole grain.

  • An efficient optimization algorithm and damage-sensitive objective function are two main components in optimization-based Finite Element Model Updating (FEMU). A suitable combination of these components can considerably affect damage detection accuracy. In this study, a new hybrid damage-sensitive objective function is proposed based on combining two different objection functions to detect the location and extent of damage in structures. The first one is based on Generalized Pseudo Modal Strain Energy (GPMSE), and the second is based on the element's Generalized Flexibility Matrix (GFM). Four well-known population-based metaheuristic algorithms are used to solve the problem and report the optimal solution as damage detection results. These algorithms consist of Cuckoo Search (CS), Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO), Moth Flame Optimization (MFO), and Jaya. Three numerical examples and one experimental study are studied to illustrate the capability of the proposed method. The performance of the considered metaheuristics is also compared with each other to choose the most suitable optimizer in structural damage detection. The numerical examinations on truss and frame structures with considering the effects of measurement noise and availability of only the first few vibrating modes reveal the good performance of the proposed technique in identifying damage locations and their severities. Experimental examinations on a six-story shear building structure tested on a shake table also indicate that this method can be considered as a suitable technique for damage assessment of shear building structures.

  • Purpose: In extensive deep burn of the lower limb, due to less amount of soft tissue, bone is easily exposed. When it happens, natural healing or reconstruction with skin graft only is not easy. Local flap is difficult to success, because adjacent skins are burnt or skin grafted tissues. Muscle flap or free flap are also limited and has high failure rate due to deep tissue damage. The authors acquired good outcome by performing one - stage operation on bone exposed soft tissue defect with AlloDerm$^{(R)}$(LifeCell, USA), an acellular dermal matrix producted from cadaveric skin. Methods: We studied 14 bone exposed soft tissue defect patients from March 2002 to March 2009. Average age, sex, cause of burn, location of wound, duration of admission period, and postoperative complications were studied. We removed bony cortex with burring, until conforming pinpoint bone bleeding. Then rehydrated AlloDerm$^{(R)}$(25 / 1000 inches, meshed type) was applicated on wound, and thin split thickness(6 ~ 8 / 1000 inches) skin graft was done at the immediately same operative time. Results: Average age of patients was 53.6 years(25 years ~ 80 years, SD = 16.8), and 13 patients were male(male : female = 13 : 1). Flame burn was the largest number. (Flame burn 6, electric burn 3, contact burn 4, and scalding burn 1). Tibia(8) was the most affected site. (tibia 8, toe 4, malleolus 1, and metatarsal bone 1). Thin STSC with AlloDerm$^{(R)}$ took without additional surgery in 12 of 14 patients. Partial graft loss was shown on four cases. Two cases were small in size under $1{\times}1cm$, easily healed with simple dressing, and other two cases needed additional surgery. But in case of additional surgery, granulation tissue has easily formed, and simple patch graft on AlloDerm$^{(R)}$ was enough. Average duration of admission period of patients without additional surgery was 15 days(13 ~ 19 days). Conclusion: AlloDerm$^{(R)}$ and thin split thickness skin graft give us an advantage in short surgery time and less limitations in donor site than flap surgery. Postoperative scar is less than in conventional skin graft because of more firm restoration of dermal structure with AlloDerm$^{(R)}$. We propose that AlloDerm$^{(R)}$ and thin split thickness skin graft could be a solution to bone exposured soft tissue defects in extensive deep burned patients on lower extremities, especially when adjacent tissue cannot be used for flap due to extensive burn.

  • In case of wild fire, early detection of wild fire is the most important factor in minimizing the damages. In this paper, we suggest an effective system that detects wild fire using a panoramic image from a single camera with PAN/TILT head. This enables the system to detect the size and the location of the fire in the early stages. After converting RGB image input to color YCrCb image, the differential image is used to detect changes in movement of the smoke to determine the regions which may be prone to forest fire. Histogram analysis of fire flame is used to determine the possibility of fire in the predetermined regions. In addition, image matching and SURF were used to create the panoramic image. There are many advantages in this system. First of all, it is very economical because this system needs only a single camera and a monitor. Second, it shows the live image of wide view through panoramic image. Third, this system can reduce the quantity of saved data by storing panoramic images.

  • An optimum configuration of the hybrid/dual swirl jet combustor for a micro-gas turbine was investigated experimentally. Location of pilot nozzle, angle and direction of swirler vane were varied systematically as main parameters under the conditions of constant thermal load. The results showed that the variation in locations of inner fuel nozzle and pilot burner resulted in significant change in flame shape and swirl intensity due to the changes in recirculating flow pattern and minimum flow area near burner exit, in particular, with the significant reduction of CO emission near lean-flammability limit. In addition, it was observed that the co-swirl configuration produced less CO and NOx emissions compared to the counter-swirl configuration.

  • Experiments have been performed to investigate the effect of secondary venturi tip angle on flow and spray characteristics in gas turbine combustor with a swirl cup assembly. Three variations of secondary venturi tip angle are made: converging, straight and diverging angles. It is found that the variation of venturi tip angle results in the significant changes of flow and spray characteristics in gas turbine combustors, such as the size and location of recirculation zones. drop size and mass distribution affecting combustion efficiency and NOx emissions. In diverge case, central toroidal recirculation zone(CTRZ) exists near the exit, which is known to be beneficial for flame stability. But in converge case, the finest SMD distribution and uniform mass distribution are found and CTRZ is longer than other cases. Consequently, high combustion efficiency and low pollutant emission are expected in converge case.
