In this study, the surface marker method, one of the particle tracking methods, used to track the free surface is extended to cover the more general cases easily including the collision and separation of the free surface. In surface particle method to redistribute particles effectively using the grid system, the free surface is composed of the sum of quadrilaterals having four curves where fixed markers are placed at ends of each curve. Fixed markers are used to know how curves are connected to each other. The position of fixed markers can move as the free surface deforms but all fixed markers cannot be deleted during all time of simulation to keep informations of curve connection. In the case of the collision or separtion of the free surface where several curves can be intersected disorderly, severe difficulties can occur to define newly states of curve connection. In this study, the adaptable surface parTicle method without fixed markers is introduced. Intersection markers instead of the fixed markers are used to define quadrilaterals. The position of the intersection markers is defined to be the intersection point between the free surface and the edge of the grid and it can be added or deleted during the time of simulation to allow more flexibilities. To verify numerical schemes, two flow cases are simulated and the numerical results are compared with other's one and shown to be valid.

The purpose of this study was to find effect of upper extremities exercises using two different supporting surface, mobile surface and fixed surface in sitting on the function of upper extremities for the patients with stroke. The study period was between July 5, 2012 and August 1 2012. The subjects were 20 subjects who were randomly divided into two groups : (1) mobile surface group, (2) fixed surface group. The mobile surface group performed bilateral upper extremities exercise sitting on balance disc, and the fixed surface group was provided fixed surface chair. Both groups performed 30 minutes 5 times per a week for 4weeks. The Manual Functional Test(MFT) and Fugl-Meyer Motor Function Assessment(FMA) was used to measure the differences of upper extremity functions before and after interventions. The results of this study were as follows. First, Both groups, mobile surface group and fixed surface group showed the significant increase(p<.05) in upper extremity function. Second, the improvements of the hand function in mobile surface group showed significant difference comparing with the group with fixed surface. Therefore, the results of this study showed the bilateral hand exercise program on mobile surface is more effective than the fixed surface bilateral hand exercise program for the patients with stroke.
Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted to study the performance of a surface-fixed horizontal porous wave barrier in regular waves. The characteristics of the reflection and transmission coefficients, energy dissipation, and vertical wave force were examined versus different porosities of the barrier. Numerical simulations based on 3D Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations with standard low-Re k-ε turbulent closure and volume of fluid approach were accomplished and compared with the experimental results conducted in a 2D wave tank. Experimental measurements and numerical simulations were shown to be in satisfactory agreement. The qualitative wave behavior propagating over a horizontal porous barrier such as wave run-up, wave breaking, air entrapment, jet flow, and vortex generation was reproduced by CFD computation. Through the discrete harmonic decomposition of the vertical wave force on a wave barrier, the nonlinear characteristics were revealed quantitatively. It was concluded that the surface-fixed horizontal barrier is more effective in dissipating wave energy in the short wave period region and more energy conversion was observed from the first harmonic to higher harmonics with the increase of porosity. The present numerical approach will provide a predictive tool for an accurate and efficient design of the surface-fixed horizontal porous wave barrier.
In this paper, we concern about the distribution characteristics of surface temperature by the increment of time, diffusivity and heat flux on irradiating of a laser. The penetration depth corresponding to the induced constant heat flux or irradiated laser, is simulated by a computer algorithm. The distribution of temperature versus penetration depth for the variation of time and diffusivity is characterized at the constant heat flux and on irradiating of a laser. The temperature of constant heat flux at the fixed diffusivity or time, is decreased by the pattern of exponential function as the time t or diffusivity a is increased (a=10, 100, 1000). The temperature of constant heat flux is not changed but exponentially fixed with the increasing diffusivity and the fixed time. On the other hand, the temperature of laser at the fixed diffusivity or time is decreased linearly. Our results show that the characteristics of the simulated surface temperature in a semi-infinite solid are similar to the graphs on theoretical consideration.

The present study was performed to investigate the effect of aging on muscular activity of older subjects under the condition of fixed load muscle contraction. SEMG signals were recorded from old (46 women) and young (45 women) groups performing sustained isometric elbow flexion contraction with a fixed load during 30 seconds. Linear regression and mean square error (MSE) analysis with four characteristic variables (ARV, RMS, MDF, MNF) were used to compare the age-related difference (of local muscle fatigue and fluctuation of the amplitude and frequency) in the SEMG signal. The main results can be summarized as follows: During sustained muscle contraction with a fixed load: i) the MSE values of amplitude (ARV, RMS) and frequency (MDF, MNF) variables were more than 30% higher for the young than for the old adults; ii) the measures of local muscle fatigue (slope of the MDF and MNF) indicated greater fatigue in the old; and iii) the rate of increase of the SEMG amplitude was higher for the young than the old.
A point of a Riemann surface X is said to be its fixed point if it is a fixed point of one of its nontrivial holomorphic automorphisms. We start this note by proving that the set Fix(X) of fixed points of Riemann surface X of genus g${\geq}$2 has at most 82(g-1) elements and this bound is attained just for X having a Hurwitz group of automorphisms, i.e., a group of order 84(g-1). The set of such points is invariant under the group of holomorphic automorphisms of X and we study the corresponding symmetric representation. We show that its algebraic type is an essential invariant of the topological type of the holomorphic action and we study its kernel, to find in particular some sufficient condition for its faithfulness.
To obtain the breakthrough characteristics for the design of fixed bed adsorption plant, adsorption experiment on granular activated carbon was performed with tharonil in the fixed bed. The pore diffusivity and surface diffusivity of tharonil estimated by the concentration-time curve and adsorption isotherm were $D_s=2.825{\times}10^{-9}cm^2/s,\;D_p=1.26{\times}10^{-5}cm^2/s$, respectively. From comparison of the pore diffusivity and surface diffusivity, it was found that surface diffusion was controlling step for intrapaticle diffusion. The breakthrough curve predicted by constant pattern-linear driving force model were shown to agree with the experimental results. The surface diffusivity and film mass transfer coefficient had no effect on the theoretical breakthrough curve but the adsorption isotherm had fairly influence on it. Appearance time of breakthrough curve is faster with the increase flow rate and inflow concentration of liquid. The utility of granular activated carbon is enhanced with the increase of bed height and with the decrease of inflow rate.
PURPOSE. Conventional resin-bonded fixed partial dentures (RBFPDs) are usually made with a two-retainer design. Unlike conventional RBFPDs, cantilever resin-bonded fixed partial dentures (Cantilever RBFPDs) are, for their part, made with a single-retainer design. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of tooth surface preparation on the bond strength of zirconia cantilever single-retainer RBFPDs. The objective is to evaluate the shear bond strength of these single-retainer RBFPDs bonded on 3 different amount of tooth surface preparation. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty extracted bovine incisors were categorized to 3 groups (n=10), with different amounts of tooth surface preparations. Teeth were restored with single-retainer RBFPDs with different retainer surfaces: large retainer of $32mm^2$; medium retainer of $22mm^2$; no retainer and only a proximal connecting box of $12mm^2$. All RBFPDs were made of zirconia and were bonded using an adhesive system without adhesive capacity. Shear forces were applied to these restorations until debonding. RESULTS. Mean shear bond strength values for the groups I, II, and II were $2.39{\pm}0.53MPa$, $3.13{\pm}0.69MPa$, and $5.40{\pm}0.96MPa$, respectively. Statistical analyses were performed using a one-way ANOVA test with Bonferroni post-hoc test, at a significance level of 0.001. Failure modes were observed and showed a 100% adhesive fracture. CONCLUSION. It can be concluded that the preparation of large tooth surface preparation might be irrelevant. For zirconia single-retainer RBFPD, only the preparation of a proximal connecting box seems to be a reliable and minimally invasive approach. The differences are statistically significant.
Objective: The aims of this study were to evaluate the relationship between the detachment force and bonding resin surface are and to determine the resin bonding surface area that would provide adequate bonding strength with minimum resin volume. Methods: One hundred and sixty human premolars were randomly divided into 4 groups of 40 teeth each. The diameter of the resin surface area in each group was as follows: group 1, 1.5 mm; group 2, 2.5 mm; group 3, 3.5 mm; and group 4, 4.5 mm. Respond Dead Soft straight (length 0.0175 inch) was used to fabricate the retainers, and $Transbond^{TM}$ XT was used to fix the retainers to the tooth surfaces. A pair of teeth was embedded in acrylic blocks for each specimen. Thus, each group comprised 20 samples. Fixed retainers were bonded to the teeth, and vertical force was applied at the middle of wire. The force was measured using a universal testing machine. Results: The mean value of detachment force was the highest for group 4 ($102.38{\pm}2.92N$), followed by group 3 ($63.54{\pm}2.21N$), group 2 ($51.95{\pm}1.61N$), and group 1 ($24.14{\pm}1.38N$). Conclusions: The detachment force of lingual fixed retainers was significantly affected as the area of the resin bonding surface increased. Considering the minimum bonding strength of brackets, a resin bonding surface area with a diameter of 3.5 mm would provide adequate bonding strength.
Fixed Electromagnetic Wave Surface Velocimetry (Fixed EWSV) has been started to be used to measure flood discharge in the mountain stream, since it has various advantages such that it works well to continuously measure stream discharge even in the night time as well as very strong weather. On the contrary, the Fixed EWSV only measures single point surface velocity, thus it does not consider varying feature of the transverse velocity profile in the given stream cross-section. In addition, a conventional value of 0.85 was generally used as the ratio for converting the measured surface velocity into the depth-averaged velocity. These aspects could bring in error for accurately measuring the stream discharge. The capacity of the EWSV for capturing rapid flow velocity was also not properly validated. This study aims at conducting error analysis of using the EWSV by: 1) measuring transverse velocity at multiple points along the cross-section to assess an error driven by the single point measurement; 2) figuring out ratio between surface velocity and the depth-averaged velocity based on the concurrent ADCP measurements; 3) validating the capacity of the EWSV for capturing rapid flow velocity. As results, the velocity measured near the center by the fixed EWSV overestimated about 15% of the cross-sectional mean velocity. The converting ratio from the surface velocity to the depth-averaged velocity was 0.8 rather than 0.85 of a conventional ratio. Finally, the EWSV revealed unstable velocity output when the flow velocity was higher than 2 m/s.
