  • Evolvable Hardware is the technique that obtains target function by adapting reconfigurable digital' devices to environment in real time using evolutionary computation. It opens the possibility of automatic design of hardware circuits but still has the limitation to produce complex circuits. In this paper, we have analyzed the fitness landscape of evolvable hardware and proposed a speciation technique of evolving diverse individuals simultaneously, proving the efficiency empirically. Also, we show that useful extra functions can be obtained by analyzing diverse circuits from the speciation technique.

  • Pseudomonas chlororaphis 30-84 is a biological control agent selected for its ability to suppress diseases caused by fungal pathogens. P. chlororaphis 30-84 produces three phenazines: phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA), 2-hydroxy-phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (2OHPCA) and a small amount of 2-hydroxy-phenazine (2OHPHZ), and these are required for fungal pathogen inhibition and wheat rhizosphere competence. The two, 2-hydroxy derivatives are produced from PCA via the activity of a phenazine-modifying enzyme encoded by phzO. In addition to the seven biosynthetic genes responsible for the production of PCA, many other Pseudomonas strains possess one or more modifying genes, which encode enzymes that act independently or together to convert PCA into other phenazine derivatives. In order to understand the fitness effects of producing different phenazines, we constructed isogenic derivatives of P. chlororaphis 30-84 that differed only in the type of phenazines produced. Altering the type of phenazines produced by P. chlororaphis 30-84 enhanced the spectrum of fungal pathogens inhibited and altered the degree of take-all disease suppression. These strains also differed in their ability to promote extracellular DNA release, which may contribute to the observed differences in the amount of biofilm produced. All derivatives were equally important for survival over repeated plant/harvest cycles, indicating that the type of phenazines produced is less important for persistence in the wheat rhizosphere than whether or not cells produce phenazines. These findings provide a better understanding of the effects of different phenazines on functions important for biological control activity with implications for applications that rely on introduced or native phenazine producing populations.

  • Incorrect deployment of RFID readers occurs reader-to-reader interferences in many applications using RFID technologies. Reader-to-reader interference occurs when a reader transmits a signal that interferes with the operation of another reader, thus preventing the second reader from communicating with tags in its interrogation zone. Interference detected by one reader and caused by another reader is referred to as a reader collision. In RFID systems, the reader collision problem is considered to be the bottleneck for the system throughput and reading efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel RFID reader anti-collision algorithm based on evolutionary algorithm(EA). First, we analyze characteristics of RFID antennas and build database. Also, we propose EA encoding algorithm, fitness algorithm and genetic operators to deploy antennas efficiently. To show superiority of our proposed algorithm, we simulated our proposed algorithm. In the result, our proposed algorithm obtains 95.45% coverage rate and 10.29% interference rate after about 100 generations.

  • For genetic algorithms, the population may get stuck in a local optimum. The population can escape from this after a long duration. This phenomenon is called punctuated equilibrium. The punctuated equilibria observed in nature and computational ecosystems are known to be well described by diffusion equations. In this paper, simple genetic algorithms are theoretically analyzed to show that they can also be described by a diffusion equation. When fitness is the function of unitation, this analysis can be further refined to make the parameters of genetic algorithms appear in this equation. Using theoretical results on the diffusion equation, the duration of equilibrium is shown to be exponential of such parameters as population size, 1/(mutation probability), and potential barrier. This is corroborated by simulation results for bistable potential landscapes with one local optimum and one global optimum.

  • Evolutionary artificial neural networks (EANNs) are towards the near optimal ANN using the global search of evolutionary instead of trial-and-error process. However, many real-world problems are too hard to be solved by only one ANN. Recently there has been plenty of interest on combining ANNs in the last generation to improve the performance and reliability. This paper proposes a new approach of constructing multiple ANNs which complement each other by speciation. Also, we develop a multiple ANN to combine the results in abstract, rank, and measurement levels. The experimental results on Australian credit approval data from UCI benchmark data set have shown that combining of the speciated EANNs have better recognition ability than EANNs which are not speciated, and the average error rate of 0.105 proves the superiority of the proposed EANNs.

  • The performance test in a public survey is conducted by a sample survey and the sampling rate of the performance test is a very important factor in the test process. Since the current sampling rate was decided empirically at an earlier time, it has been criticized for two points: the first is that it has a lack of a theoretical background on the decision for the sampling rate and the second is that the sampling rate should be improved in accordance with current test situations. In this paper, we review the present state of performance tests in public surveys in Korea and study the relationship between the rate of the performance test and fitness probability, number of tests, and the success rate in order to create a theoretical background to improve the test rate. In addition, we discuss relationship between the test rate and cost in the performance test.

  • The canonical correlation biplot is a 2-dimensional plot for graphically investigating the relationship between two sets of variables and the relationship between observations and variables in the canonical correlation analysis. Recently, Choi and Choi (2008) suggested a method for investigating the relationship between skill and competition score factors of KLPGA players using this biplot. Choi et al. (2010) used this biplot to analyze the player characteristic factors and competitive factors of tennis Grand Slam competition. Moreover, Huh (1999) provided a generalized canonical correlation analysis and biplot for more than three sets of variables. A Procrustes analysis is a useful tool for comparing shapes between configurations. This study will provide a method to investigate the relationship between physique, physical fitness and basic skill factors of tennis players in the Korea Tennis Association using a generalized canonical correlation biplot and Procrustes analysis.

  • Genetic Programming (GP) is an intelligence technique whereby computer programs are encoded as a set of genes which are evolved utilizing a Genetic Algorithm (GA). In other words, the GP employs novel optimization techniques to modify computer programs; imitating the way humans develop programs by progressively re-writing them for solving problems automatically. Trial programs are frequently altered in the search for obtaining superior solutions due to the base is GA. These are evolutionary search techniques inspired by biological evolution such as mutation, reproduction, natural selection, recombination, and survival of the fittest. The power of GAs is being represented by an advancing range of applications; vector processing, quantum computing, VLSI circuit layout, and so on. But one of the most significant uses of GAs is the automatic generation of programs. Technically, the GP solves problems automatically without having to tell the computer specifically how to process it. To meet this requirement, the GP utilizes GAs to a "population" of trial programs, traditionally encoded in memory as tree-structures. Trial programs are estimated using a "fitness function" and the suited solutions picked for re-evaluation and modification such that this sequence is replicated until a "correct" program is generated. GP has represented its power by modifying a simple program for categorizing news stories, executing optical character recognition, medical signal filters, and for target identification, etc. This paper reviews existing literature regarding the GPs and their applications in different scientific fields and aims to provide an easy understanding of various types of GPs for beginners.

  • The generalized canonical correlation biplot is a 2-dimensional plot to graphically investigate the relationship between more than three sets of variables and the relationship between observations and variables. Recently, Choi and Choi (2010) investigated the relationship physique, physical fitness and basic skill factors of Korea Tennis Association(KTA) players of using this biplot; however we consider the set of covariate variables affecting the linearly on two sets of variables. In this case, if we apply the generalized canonical correlation biplot, we cannot clearly interpret the other two sets of variables due to the effect of the set of covariate variables. Moreover, Yeom and Choi (2011) provided partial canonical correlation analysis that removed the linear effect of the set of covariate variables on two sets of variables. In addition, Procrustes analysis is a useful tool for comparing shape between configurations. In this study, we will investigate the relationship between physical fitness and basic skill factors of KTA players of using a partial canonical correlation biplot and Procrustes analysis. We compare shapes and shape variabilities for the generalized, partial and simple canonical correlation biplots.
