Turbot Scophthalmus maximus can be cultured at a higher density and has a faster growth rate than olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, making it an attractive alternative for flounder farmers in Korea. As it is a relatively new species to Korean farming environments, there is no general farming protocol, which takes multiple generations to develop, for turbot in Korea. Nevertheless, we applied breeding technology to develop a stock, which we considered first-generation turbot. Then we compared its growth rate (an important economic trait) to different populations (the original stock of Korean turbot, French turbot, and Chinese turbot). The four different populations were grown in similar culture conditions. First-generation Korean turbots grew about 28% faster than all others. We will continue to select for important traits such as color, disease resistance, and heat tolerance in this turbot broodstock; we believe that with the appropriate selection process, Korean turbot should become competitive in the markets, and will become a major farming species in the Korean aquaculture industry.
This study was performed to develop natural spices using Cheongung (Cnidium officinale) which is one of the Korean medicinal plants, Cnidium of officinale is a perennial plant of the Umbelliferae family and is widely distributed in Korea. The overall acceptances of flavor and color, and the masking effects on meaty and fishy flavor of Cnidium officinale were investigated by sensory evaluation. The overall acceptances of fresh Cnidium officinale were the highest, followed by freeze dried and hot air dried samples. The meaty and fishy flavor of cooked pork and fish were significantly reduced by the addition of fresh, hot air dried and freeze dried Cnidium officinale. Cnidium officinale showed similar or higher masking effects on meaty and fishy flavor compared with black pepper.

Black sea bream, Acanthopagrus schlegelii, is a commercially important fish in Korea. As a preliminary investigation into the effect of hatchery rearing for stock enhancement, we examined genetic diversity between wild and farmed black sea bream populations from Jeju using six microsatellite markers. High levels of polymorphism were observed between the two populations. A total of 87 different alleles were found at the loci, with some alleles being unique. Allelic variability ranged from 8 to 22 in the wild population and from 7 to 17 in the farmed one. Average observed and expected heterozygosities were estimated at 0.87 and 0.88 in the wild sample. The corresponding estimates were 0.83 and 0.86 in the farmed sample. Although a considerable loss of rare alleles was observed in the farmed sample, no statistically significant reductions were found in heterozygosity or allelic diversity in the farmed sample, compared with the wild one. Significant genetic heterogeneity was found between the wild and farmed populations. These results suggest that more intensive breeding practices for stock enhancement may have resulted in a further decrease of genetic diversity. Thus, it is necessary to monitor genetic variation in bloodstock, progeny, and target populations and control inbreeding in a commercial breeding program for conservation. This information may be useful for fisheries management and the aquaculture industry.
The morphomeristic features of Gadus macrocephalus was compared using fish samples from Jinhae Bay in the South Sea and Boryeong in the Yellow Sea, Korea. In total, 332 individuals were sampled from 2 locations to investigate the differences in the morphomeristic features and determine applicability of it as a means of stcok discrimination of G. macrocephalus. No significant differences in the number of vertebrae, 1st to 3rd dorsal-fin soft rays, 1st and 2nd anal-fin soft rays, pectoral-fin soft ray, pelvic-fin soft ray, and gill raker were found between two populations from Jinhae Bay and Boryeong. The results of present study revealed that morphomeristic features of G. macrocephalus was not applicable for stock discrimination.

The chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) is an anadromous fish distributed all around the North Pacific. Artificial production and release of the juveniles are being made by Korea, Japan, Russia, Canada and the United States. It is important to set up some criteria identifying each stock in order to clarify each nation's right of harvest for the chum salmon resource. As an attempt to build such criteria, we analyzed sequences of a microsatellite DNA Ogo5 and the COIII-ND3-ND4L region of the mitochondrial DNA from chum salmons of Korea, Japan, and the United States. Ogo5 has 4 different alleles: allele A, B-1, B-2, and B-3. Allele B-3 is found only in 3 individuals out of 12 Korea salmons. The Japan salmons have the other 3 alleles and the America salmons have only 2 allots, A and B-1. Heterozygosity index (Ho/He) distinguishes the Korea (1.61) and Japan salmons (1.63) from the America ones (1.09). Seventeen different haplotypes are found in the COIII-ND3-ND4L region from 60 individuals,20 from each stock. The gene genealogy of the haplotypes revealed by TCS program shows that the Korea and Japan salmons are genetically closely linked, but that they are clearly distinguished from the America ones. Ten and eleven individuals of the Korea and Japan salmons have an identical haplotype. Nine individuals of the Korea salmons $(45\%),$ however, are separable from the Japan salmons by their own specific nucleotides. This result presents usefulness of the COIII-ND3-ND4L region as a genetic marker for identification of the chum salmon stocks.
The changes in fish stock and biomass before and after fishway renovation located in a Korean estuary were studied and fluctuations in the economic value of the fish resources were estimated. The target fishway located in the east coast area in Korea was renovated in 2014 from the small fish ladder to the ice-harbor fishway. Monitoring was continued for five consecutive years after the renovation(2015 to 2019). Since the renovation of the fish passage, the economic values increased with increases in the fishery resources, except for in 2016 when the drought impact was severe. The yearly average incremental increase in the five years after the renovation was about 227%. The increase in economic value is believed to be due to the increased population of migratory fish as a result of habitat expansion. The exponential rise model showed an increase in economic value with increasing fishery resources (R2=0.896). The model coefficient contributing to economic analysis was 0.582 and the maximum economic value after the renovation was estimated at about 30.4 million. The economic value would be a useful index for quantitative comparison in terms of ecosystem services before and after renovation.

Yellow croacker, Tseudociaena manchurica Jordan et Thompson in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea are subjected to be caught by trawl nets throughout the year. First indices of population size in every period 8re calculated. Considering present status of the yellow croacker fishery and ecology of the fish, mathematical models must have been established in order to determine catchability coefficient, natural m ortali ty, fishing mortality, recrui ting coefficient of the fish ing ground, and dispersion coefficienl from the fishing ground. The results an, summmarized as follows: Catchabil i ty coefficient $(C) = 2. 2628 {\times} 10^{-5}$ Natural mortality (M)=0.3293 Population for lhe first half season(July 1st to the following January 3lst) Initial population = 14, 621 $/\frac{M}{T}$ Recruitment =45, 597 $/\frac{M}{T}$ Natural mortality = 8, 660 $/\frac{M}{T}$ Final population =42, 970 $/\frac{M}{T}$ Population for the latter 1131f scason(February 1st to June 30th) Initial population = 69, 170 $/\frac{M}{T}$ Dispersion =51, 688 $/\frac{M}{T}$ Natural mortality = 6, 082 $/\frac{M}{T}$ Final population = 1, 802 $/\frac{M}{T}$.
An assessment of Kuwait's commercial fish stocks: hamoor (Epinephelus tauvina), zobaidy (Pampus argenteus), nakroor (Pomadasys argenteus) and sheiry (Lethrinus nebulosus), was conducted using length-frequency data, mean growth and mortality estimates obtained during 1981$\~$1988. The length-cohort analysis indicated that increases in fishing effort would not lead to long-term gains in yield of the stocks at the current estimate of natural mortality rate (M). At high M which was assumed arbitrarily, some benefit in yield could be obtained, especially for hamoor and sheiry. At low M, the yield of all stocks decreased with increased fishing effort. Increases in fishing effort resulted in significant dec-line in spawning stock size for all the stocks. Yield-per-recruit analysis indicated that, un-der low M assumption, a higher yield can be obtained for zobaidy and nakroor by reducing fishing effort. At moderate M, decreases in fishing effort brought gains in yield per recruit of the stocks, but it was not substantial compared with the present level of M. At high M, most of the stocks reached the maximum yield-per-recruit. Overall, increased fishing effort either will not be associated with large long-term gains in yield or, in some stocks, might cause a decline from the present level.

The potential of ecosystem-based fisheries management is recently recognized to be very important to improve the sustainability of fisheries resources. Under the depressed condition of many fisheries resources, this recognition has been expanded and more effort has been taken to improve this approach. Taking ecosystem concept includes the use of other tools of management in addition to fisheries regulation, such as stock and productivity enhancement, provision of physical structure, or marine protected areas. In the ecosystem-based fisheries management approach, it would require to holistically consider ecological interactions of target species with predators, competitors, and prey species, the effects of climate on fisheries ecology, the complex interactions between fishes and their habitat, and the effects of fishing on fish stocks and their ecosystem. Fisheries management based upon the understanding of these factors can prevent significant and potentially irreversible changes in marine ecosystems caused by fishing. A useful approach for analyzing tropho-dynamic interactions and mass-balance in marine ecosystems is introduced to demonstrate the complexity and usefulness of the ecosystem approach, which was applied to a small ecosystem in Korea. Korea should seriously consider to take the ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management, since most major fish stocks are currently depleted due to many reasons such as overfishing, land reclamation and coastal pollution.
First annulus formation and age determination of otoliths were examined for chub mackerel Scomber japonicus collected in Korean waters over the one year from January to December in 2009. Translucent zone was regarded as an annual mark. Age interpretation criteria was based on the data of the number of translucent zone, capture date, and edge type of the otolith, assuming the nominal birthday to be 1 January. Monthly changes in mean marginal index indicated that translucent zone was formed once a year, mainly in June. The otolith of 0-ring group was detected comparing the progression by month of the smaller fish length, appearing to be a single first opaque zone. The average distance from the core to the first translucent zone was ~1.77 mm, provided as supplementary information to increase ageing accuracy. The ageing criteria for chub mackerel was made to determine correct year-class with the purpose of effective stock assessment. This method using nominal birthdate and edge type analysis could estimate age of fish closer to the true age than purely counting the number of translucent zone on a whole otolith.
