  • This study investigated physiological and hematological changes, expression of stress protein Hsp70 mRNA and oxygen consumption in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) after exposing the fish at different temperature conditions (9, 12, 15, 18 and 21℃) for 24 and 48 hours. Hematological parameters including hematocrit (Ht) and hemoglobin (Hb), cortisol and glucose, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), NH3, osmolality and total protein (TP) mostly exhibited significant changes at 9 and 12℃. The expression of Hsp70 mRNA was also higher at 9 and 12℃ than at other temperatures. The measured oxygen consumptions were also lower at 9 and 12℃ than at 21℃. It is expected that the study results could be utilized as baseline data to control water temperature during long-distance transportation, e.g. for exporting olive flounder juveniles to overseas.

  • The basic purpose behind the Korean government's policy toward the Korean deep sea fishing industry is to limit growth of the industry. Therefore, the regulations on the industry are generally restrictive and interventionist. The policy is intended to maintain high domestic fish prices in order to protect the domestic coastal fishing industry. Some regulations have also been introduced to maintain "industrial order." Each fishing vessel must obtain a government permit for operation. The permit specifies the kind of fish it can catch, the area of sea in which it can operate, and the port at which it can unload its catches. The number of permits government issues each year is based on the estimates of the demand increase calculated by government officials, and the government traditionally has been fairly conservative in its estimation, reflecting its concern for fish price stabilization, which actually implies a gradual increase of the prices. There is also a restriction on importing vessels from abroad. This regulation is intended to protect the domestic shipbuilding industry. However, this regulation has resulted in an unusually high average age of Korean fishing vessels, causing fishing costs to rise. These regulations and the inflexible response of the regulators to changing circumstances have resulted in many problems: i) high domestic fish prices, which are, to some extent deliberately, inflated to three or four times the level of international prices, resulting in huge consumer welfare losses; ii) over-exploitation of coastal fish resources; iii) provision of a hospitable environment for inefficient firms to survive, which is especially evident from the fact that, despite the high fish prices in Korea, most of the firms in the industry do not enjoy high profitability. It also must be pointed out that the actual beneficiaries of the high fish prices are the large operators, who are protected from competition and provide most of the fish for domestic consumption, rather than the low-income fishing households and small coastal operators whom the policy was originally designed to help. This study proposes a set of regulatory reforms and policy changes which could Promote competition and equity within the industry and allow firms to reduce costs and increase productivity. Such changes can make the industry more efficient and internationally competitive. Major proposals are, among others: minimization of bureaucratic discretion in issuing fishing permits and maintaining transparency in the governments' decision-making processes; reduction of the government permit specifications and simplification of the operational categories within the industry; and removal of the restrictions on importing foreign fishing vessels.

  • We determined the contents of heavy metals in the muscle of wild and cultured fishes, collected from fish markets located in the eastern (Pohang), western (Gunsan), and southern (Tongyeong) coasts of Korea, from 2004 to 2005. As the results of monitoring the heavy metal contents in spring season, the wild fishes contained the range of Cd (0.01-0.08 mg/kg), Cr (ND-0.28 mg/kg), Cu (0.06-1.53 mg/kg), Hg (0.02-0.16 mg/kg), Mn (0.04-1.15 mg/kg), Ni (ND-0.09 mg/kg), Pb (0.03-0.41 mg/kg), and Zn (1.84-6.61 mg/kg). While for the cultured fishes, Cd (0.01-0.05 mg/kg), Cr (ND-0.17 mg/kg), Cu (0.05-0.61 mg/kg), Hg (0.02-0.13 mg/kg), Mn (0.03-0.17 mg/kg), Ni (ND-0.08 mg/kg), Pb (0.03-0.33 mg/kg), and Zn (2.06-6.20 mg/kg) were contained. In summer season, the contents of heavy metal in the muscle of the wild fishes were as follows: Cd (ND-0.11 mg/kg), Cr (0.01-0.37 mg/kg), Cu (0.21-1.31 mg/kg), Hg (0.01-0.11 mg/kg), Mn (ND-1.47 mg/kg), Ni (ND-0.26 mg/kg), Pb (0.06-0.48 mg/kg), and Zn (2.94-14.38 mg/kg). In comparison, the contents of heavy metal in the muscle of cultured fishes were Cd (ND-0.05 mg/kg), Cr (0.13-0.33 mg/kg), Cu (0.19-0.56 mg/kg), Hg (0.05-0.26 mg/kg), Mn (ND-0.14 mg/kg), Ni (ND-0.58 mg/kg), Pb (0.07-0.45 mg/kg), and Zn (2.43-7.53 mg/kg). Also the fall and the winter season, the heavy metal contents in the fishes showed almost similar with other season, however, Pb was lower and Zn was higher than both spring and summer season. The wild fishes contained the heavy metals a little more than the cultured fishes. We could not observe clear seasonal variation in the heavy metal contents of the fishes. The levels of Hg and Pb in all samples tested did not exceed the maximum permissible levels in the fishes set by the Korean Food & Drug Agency for safe human consumption.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Collagen is commonly used in diverse forms as a functional component in skincare products. On the other hand, the effects of collagen on human skin are controversial. Dietary collagen hydrolysates from freshwater Pangasius hypophthalmus fish skin ameliorated photo-aged skin of hairless mice. This study conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to determine if liquid fish collagen (Collagen-Tripep20TM, Tripep20) as a drink strengthens skin health and quality. SUBJECTS/METHODS: In this clinical trial, 85 subjects aged 35-60 yrs were diagnosed with photo-aged skin. Eighty-five subjects were randomized to receive either Tripep20 (n = 44) or placebo (n = 41). Seventy-eight subjects fully participating for a 12-week period consumed 1,000 mg of Tripep20 (n = 41) or placebo (n = 37) in a 50-mL bottle as a daily drink. The intend-to-treat and per-protocol populations were 85 and 78, respectively. Skin hydration, wrinkles, and elasticity were assessed at 0 (baseline), 6, and 12 weeks during the study period. RESULTS: Skin hydration in the Tripep20 group was significantly higher from 6 weeks (P < 0.001) than the baseline. After 12 weeks, the Crow's-feet visual score and skin roughness (Ra, Rq, and Rmax) were significantly improved in the Tripep20 group than in the placebo group (P < 0.05). Consuming liquid collagen Tripep20 greatly enhanced skin elasticity (Gross R2, Net R5, and Biological elasticity R7) in 6 weeks compared to the placebo group. The Tripep20 group showed a significant increase in skin elasticity from the baseline after 6 and 12 weeks (P < 0.001). Neither abnormal symptoms nor adverse events were encountered during the study period in subjects ingesting Tripep20 or placebo. The changes in parameters related to hematology and clinical chemistry were within the normal ranges. CONCLUSION: Oral consumption of liquid collagen Tripep20 was safe and well-tolerated. The results of this study show that freshwater fish-derived liquid collagen Tripep20 can be used as a healthy functional food ingredient to improve skin moisturizing, anti-wrinkling, and elasticity in an aging population.

  • Ammonium ion is notorious for the adverse effects upon many of the important uses of water such as toxcity to fish, corrosion of metals and concrete, and concern over man's consumption. A clinoptilolite, which is a naturally occurring zeolite selective for ammonium ion exchange, has been used. Batch isotherm experiments were conducted for measuring ammonium ion exchange capacity. The ion exchange capacity was well described either by the Langmuir equation or by the Freundlich equation. As the particle size of the clinoptilolite decreased, exchange capacity was increased. The smaller particle size enhaced the exchange of ammonium ion due to the greater surface area and decreased diffusion to the exchange sites within the zeolite. Ammonium ion exchange capacity tended to decrease when the temperature increased from $20^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$, and the temperature correction factor was found to be 0.98 in the Langmuir equation.

  • It has been recognized, virtually from the time of its inception, that fisheries economics, like other aspects of resource economics, should ideally be cast in capital-theoretic terms. The fish population or biomass can be viewed as a capital stock in that, like conventional or man-made capital, it is capable of yielding a sustainable consumption flow through time. This study is to introduce the optimal control theory which was extended from the theory of calculus of variations into the study of former static theory of fisheries economics started by Gordon (1954). The optimal control theory eliminated the inadequacies of the classical techniques to a large extent. From this point of view, this study, on the base of Schaefer model, summerizes most of major results achieved so far, but does so in a manner such that the links with capital theory are made transparent. This study explores two sets of problems. The first concerns the optimal approach to the equilibrium stock, i.e. the optimal investment policy. The second set of problems arises from the relaxation of the highly restrictive assumption of autonomy (i.e. the assumption that the parameters are independent of time), then concludes the relaxation of linearity assumption together with the complexities caused by that.

  • Interviews of 208 women concerning dietary changes during pregnancy were under-rtaken from September 1986 to January 1987 at the medical centers in Seoul and Kyung Ki. 84% of the total subjects felt the morning sicksnes such as nausea and vomiting within the first trimester of pregnancy. There was a significant correlation between the experience of moring sickness and some environmental factors such as school carreer, food intake in early pregnancy, the number of meals and taking of medicines for promoting nutrition. Foods for which specifie cravings were frequently cited were fruits, meats, cold noodle, noodle and chinese food. Foods of aversions were Kimchi, meats, fish and fatted foods. With regard to beverage, there were the increase in milk and fruint juices consumption and the decrease in coffee ingestion during early pregnancy primarily attributed the concern for feto-maternal health. Possible explanation for these changes associated with pregnancy discussed.

  • The feeding habits of Sebastiscus marmoratus collected from the Western Coastal Waters of Jeju Island between June 2008 and July 2009 were studied based on examination of the stomach contents. A total 254 individuals of S. marmoratus ranged from 13.2 to 29.6cm (mean 20.7cm) in Standard length (SL). S. marmoratus consumed mainly teleosts such as Chromis notata and Sebastes inermis. Its diet also includes shrimps and crabs. The individuals smaller than 15cm SL consumed mainly shrimps, but on the other hand the individuals larger than 25cm SL consumed mainly fishes. The proportion of fish consumption increased with increasing size of S. marmoratus.

  • In order to estimate toxicity of copper, radmium and chromium on survival, growth and oxygen consumption of the estuarine mysid, Neomysis awatschensis, adult and juvenile, the experiments were conducted by renewal bioassay method at $20{\pm}1^{\circ}C\;and\;20{\pm}1\%_{\circ}$ salinity. The $96hr-LC_{50}$ of the mysid exposed to cadmium, copper and chromium was 20.2, 11.3 and $670.4\;{\mu}g/\ell$ in adut and 3.4, 1.9 and $49.4\;{\mu}g/\ell$ in juvenile, respectively, and were ranked in order of toxicity : copper >cadmium >chromium. Survival rates of the mysid exposed to the sublethal concentrations of heavy metals for 40 days were significantly affected by cadmium $\geq1.0\;{\mu}g/\ell$ and copper $\geq0.6\;{\mu}g/\ell$ concentrations. The growth rate of the mysid exposed to $cadmium\geq2.0\;{\mu}g\ell$ and copper $\geq1.2\;{\mu}g/\ell$ concentrations were significantly reduced than that exposed to normal condition, but there was no affect on intermoult period. Oxygen consumption rate of the mysid exposed to heavy metals was significantly reduced with increasing heavy metals concentrations. The results of the present study led us to conclude that concentrations levels cadmium$\geq1.0\;{\mu}g\ell$ and copper $\geq0.6\;{\mu}g\ell$ of the estuarine could markedly affect the distribution and population of the mysid by reduced survival, growth and oxygen consumption rate.

  • The juvenile Bobiids, Faronirobius gymnauchen, were reared for 40 days under $0{\~}33.6{\%_{\circ}}$ salinity conditions to examine the effects of various salinity on its survival, growth and oxygen consumption rates, Survival rate was significantly declined below $6.7{\%_{\circ}}$ salinity, and daily growth rate was also reduced below $10.1{\%{\circ}}$. Body length and weight of gobiids reared below $10.1{\%_{\circ}}$ were smaller than those of gobiids reared above $20.2{\%_{\circ}}$. Oxygen consumption rate in the salinity conditions ${\leq}13.4{\%_{\circ}}$ was significantly reduced with decreasing salinity than that in natural seawater ($33.6{\%_{\circ}}$), This study revealed that low salinity reduced survival, growth and oxygen consumption rates of the juvenile gobiids suggesting potential influence on the natural mortality of F gymnauchen in the coastal areas.
