  • The rate of utilization of the oak cork (bark of Quercus variabilis Blume) ranges only 40-50%. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the chemical properties of the oak cork for increasing the utility. 1) The contents of alkali extractives, organic solvent extractives and ash in the oak cork are similar to those of other barks, but hot and cold water extractives and lignin contents are lower than those of the wood. The carbohydrate (cellulose and hemicellulose) content of the oak cork is similar to that of other barks. The suberin contents in the first and the second bark of the oak cork are 34.8 and 32.2% respectively, in the dry weight. 2) Inorganic component contents of the first bark are similar to those of the second. The pH of the first and the second bark are 3.9 and 4.2%. The caloric values of the first and second bark are 6,263 Kcal/kg, and 5,828 Kcal/kg, respectively, and these caloric values are higher than those of other barks. The sclerencymatous cell content of the first bark which is related to the quality of the oak cork is lower than that of second bark, the contents of the sclerenchymatous cell and lignin show the positive correlation. 3) In the dimension of the cross sectioned cork cell, the first bark is bigger than that of the second. The shape of the cork cell is globular shape in the early bark and discoid shape in the late bark. The cross and the radial section are the same shape, but the tangential section shows difference from the other section.

  • It is very important for more effective military operation to share information required in recognizing a situation by monitoring battlefield. The recognition of situations is offered visually though multi-media systems such as a COP(Common Operation Picture), UAV etc. The operating method has rapidly changed into Network-Centric Warfare (NCW). As a result, the data that these Multimedia systems should control is increasing. Improved performance of Multimedia systems is required to deal with them. In this paper, we propose Extended-Military Multimedia System(E-MMS) applying the most excellent scheduling method in terms of meet-ratio in real time when Multimedia systems carry out assigned information in real time for monitoring as the method of improved performance. As a result of utility about proposed system, it is verified that realtime EDF(Earliest Deadline First) scheduling method is more improved up to 20% compared to non-realtime FCFS(First Come First Service) in terms of the deadline meet ratio.

  • Generally, the goal of seismic retrofit design of an existing structure using energy dissipation devices is to determine the optimum design parameters of a retrofit device to satisfy a specified limit state with minimum cost. However, the presence of multiple parameters to be optimized and the computational complexity of performing non-linear analysis make it difficult to find the optimal design parameters in the realistic 3D structure. In this study, genetic algorithm-based optimal seismic retrofit methods for determining the required number, yield strength, and location of steel slit dampers are proposed to retrofit an asymmetric soft first-story structure. These methods use a multi-objective and single-objective evolutionary algorithms, each of which varies in computational complexity and incorporates nonlinear time-history analysis to determine seismic performance. Pareto-optimal solutions of the multi-objective optimization are found using a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). It is demonstrated that the developed multi-objective optimization methods can determine the optimum number, yield strength, and location of dampers that satisfy the given limit state of a three-dimensional asymmetric soft first-story structure. It is also shown that the single-objective distribution method based on minimizing plan-wise stiffness eccentricity turns out to produce similar number of dampers in optimum locations without time consuming nonlinear dynamic analysis.

  • A field experiment was carried out to determine the effects of nitrogen (N) fertilization levels after first harvest (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kglha) during spring season on the gms growth, dry matter (DM) yield, nutritive value, and efficiency of DM production per N kg applied in orchardgrass meadow. Additional N was applicated at early spring (70 kg), after second harvest (50 kg), and after fourth harvest (30 kg/ha) in all treatments, 1990. Growth and DM yield of orchardgrass at second harvest were significantly increased with increasing level of N after first harvest (P<0.05), but no yield differences were observed between application of N 60, N 90, and N 120 kg. The efficiency of DM increment per N kg applied was rapidly decreased with increasing level of N; that was 14.8, 12.0, 10.7 and 4.7 DM kg/N kgha in the plot of N 30, N 60, N 90 and N 120 kg, respectively. The content and yield of crude protein of orchardgrass at second harvest were significantly increased with increasing of N (P<0.05), ranged h r n 11.0% (N 0 kg) to 16.8% (N 120 kg), and from 195.0 kg (N 0 kg) to 508.2 kglha (N 120 kg), respectively. However, the content of neutral detergent fiber was not affected by N level after first harvest. From the above results, it is suggested that application of N fertilizer after first harvest was very effective for regrowth and nutritive value of orchardgrass during spring season, and the proper amount of N after first harvest was 60-90 kglha in this experiment.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of the first harvesting times and regrowth periods after the fist harvest on grass regrowth, dry matter (DM) yield and botanical composition in pasture mixtures during 1987 and 1988. For the test, a split plot design with 3 replications was treated with 3 different first harvesting times (vegetative, stem elongation and heading stage) and 3 different regrowth periods (20, 30 and 40 days) after first harvest. Although the total DM yield of grasses was decreased slightly with earlier cutting, the regrowth DM yield and the regrowth plant height was increased significantly with earlier cutting (p < 0.05). Also, the 30 days of regrowth periods was contributed greatly to the regrowth and the DM yield. The percentage of legumes Tmainly red clover) in botanical composition was increased with later initial harvest anrl longer regrowth period after first harvest. Based on the results, it is suggested that good grass regrowth and seasonal distribution could be achieved by the earlier harvest at fist and the regrowth period of 30 days after first harvest in spring.

  • In this paper, we develop the noninformative priors when the parameter of interest is the difference between quantiles of two exponential distributions. We want to develop the first and second order probability matching priors. But we prove that the second order probability matching prior does not exist. It turns out that Jeffreys' prior does not satisfy the first order matching criterion. The Bayesian credible intervals based on the first order probability matching prior meet the frequentist target coverage probabilities much better than the frequentist intervals of Jeffreys' prior. Some simulation and real example will be given.

  • A railway station forecourt is the first place in a city that may make an impression on first time visitors. Their first impression is influenced by the view of the city from the station. This study had two objectives: one was to clarify the evaluation structure of a station forecourt landscape and the other was to clarify the effect of landscape elements on public preference using multivariate analysis, and to discuss the problems of designing a station forecourt. In order to accomplish these objectives, psychological experiments based on photos of station forecourts were carried out, and the relationship between public preference and landscape elements was analyzed. A significant relationship between public preference and elements of a station forecourt landscape was quantitatively observed and several problems inherent to station forecourt design were identified.

  • Daniel Coit Gilman, the first president of Johns Hopkins University, aspired to build an ideal university focused on the competent faculty and their research. His plan was carried out through opening the first American graduate program, hiring professors with the highest-level research performances, assigning them less teaching burdens, and encouraging them to actively publish professional journals. He introduced Department of Mathematics as an initial model to put his plan into practice, and James Joseph Sylvester, a British mathematician invited as the first mathematics professor to Johns Hopkins University, made it possible in a short time. Their concerted efforts led to building the Department of Mathematics as a professional research institute for research, higher education, and expert training as well as to publishing American Journal of Mathematics.

  • In this paper, we develop noninformative priors for the generalized Pareto distribution when the parameter of interest is the shape parameter. We developed the first order and the second order matching priors. We revealed that the second order matching prior does not exist. It turns out that the reference prior satisfies a first order matching criterion, but Jeffrey's prior is not a first order matching prior. Some simulation study is performed and a real example is given.
