Internal Factors Affecting Firm Performance: A Case Study in Vietnam

  • The higher the firm performance, the more chances enterprises can expand and develop their production, create jobs, and improve the workers' living quality. The main objective of this study was to measure the internal factors influencing the firm's performance of food and beverage (F&B) firms listed on the Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX). Data was collected on 15 F&B firms listed on the HNX from 2015 to 2019 We use mixed research method, both qualitative and quantitative. For the quantitative research method, the supporting tool is Stata13 software. The results via Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression method show the impacts of internal factors with the following observed variables: the ratio of short-term debt to total liabilities (CS1) and total assets (S2) have an opposite impact (-) on ROA and ROE; debt-to-total assets ratio (CS2) has an opposite effect (-) on ROA; growth of total assets (G2) of the growth factor positively affects (+) ROA and ROE, the remaining factors do not affect ROA and ROE; and internal factors do not influence ROS. Based on the findings, some recommendations have been proposed to help the F&B firms listed on the Hanoi Stock Exchange improving their firm performance in the future.

기업의 수익성과 가치에 미치는 고객만족의 동태적 영향 (The Dynamic Effects of Customer Satisfaction on Firm's Profitability and Value)

  • 고객만족경영을 통하여 기업이 이윤의 증진을 도모하는 것은 자명한 일이다. 따라서 고객만족과 기업성과와의 직접적인 관계를 밝히는 것은 학술적으로나 실무적으로 매우 중요하다. 고객만족이 기업경영성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 지금까지의 연구에서는 주로 당기의 고객만족이 당기의 기업경영성과에 미치는 현재효과를 분석하였다. 그러나 마케팅활동이 동태적 효과를 갖는다는 연구에 의하면 고객만족이 현재뿐만 아니라 미래의 기업 경영성과에 미치는 동태적 효과의 검증이 필요하다. 만약 이 효과가 존재함에도 불구하고 이를 충분히 측정하지 못한다면 고객만족의 효과는 낮게 평가될 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 패널자료분석을 통하여 기업의 수익성과 기업가치에 미치는 고객만족의 동태적 효과를 추정하였다. 연구결과, 고객만족은 기업의 수익성과 기업가치에 긍정적인 영향을 주며, 동태적 효과를 갖는 것으로 분석되었다. 또한 모형 추정결과, 모형의 적합도에서 이유재와 이청림(2006)보다 개선이 이루어 졌다. 한편 고객만족의 과거 항을 2기까지 추가한 비교모형은 추정결과의 해석이 어렵고, 다중공선성 문제가 있는 것으로 분석되었다.

중기업의 지식자산과 산업의 역동성이 기업성과에 미치는 영향 (the Impact of Medium Sized Firm's Knowledge and Industry Dynamism on Firm Performance)

  • 중소기업이 글로벌 경쟁력을 확보하고 장기적인 경쟁우위를 확보하기 최선의 전략은 기업자원 및 역량을 활용한 혁신을 통해 급변하는 환경변화에 적응하는 것이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 제조업에 속하는 중기업을 대상으로 산업·조직특성 및 기업혁신과 기업성과간의 직접적인 연관관계뿐만 아니라 산업환경과 조직특성인 지식의 수준이 기업혁신과 성과간의 관계에 미치는 간접적인 영향을 분석하고자 횡단면분석을 수행하였다. 연구결과, 중기업의 지식자산과 교육투자, 산업의 역동성은 기업혁신과 정의 관련성이 있는 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 중기업이 연구개발 집약적인 산업에 속하고, 석사이상의 고급인력 보유 비율이 높고, 교육에 대한 투자가 많을수록 혁신활동비율이 더 커진다는 것을 의미한다. 그러나 기업혁신과 성과간의 관계에 관한 분석에서는 기업혁신 뿐만 아니라 산업역동성 및 기업의 지식수준과 혁신간의 상호작용 모두 기업성과에 유의한 관련성이 없는 것으로 나타났으며, 고기술과 저기술 기업으로 나눈 추가 분석에서도 유사한 결과가 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 단기적으로 기업의 지식자산 및 교육에 대한 투자가 혁신 및 기업성과간의 관계에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않으며 산업환경에 따라 뚜렷한 차이가 없음을 의미한다.

The Contingent Effect of Marketing Alliances on Firm Profitability

  • Forming interfirm collaborative relationships has become a key aspect of a firm's marketing strategies to create value for customers and achieve greater firm performance. While empirical findings are mixed in previous studies, this study is an effort to identify boundary conditions for the benefits of marketing alliances. We investigate internal and environmental factors that may magnify or constrain the effect of marketing alliances on firm profitability. Given the complementary relationship between marketing and R&D activities, we focus on a firm's R&D intensity as an internal factor that may magnify the value of marketing alliances for firm performance. For environmental factors, we focus on industry turbulence and industry competitiveness. Industry turbulence refers to the degree to which industry market conditions change quickly and unpredictably, whereas industry competitiveness refers to the degree to which a firm faces competition in the industry. By testing these factors, we are intended to reveal boundary conditions that determine the value of marketing alliances for firm profitability. The analysis of firms in the diverse industries shows that while the main effect of marketing alliances on firm profitability is not significant, it becomes more positive when R&D investment is more intensive or when industry environment is more turbulent. The results of this study imply that just forming more marketing alliances may not be enough to increase firm profitability. Our findings imply that marketing alliances become more effective in a dynamically changing industry environment. That is, firms can cope with industry uncertainties more effectively by forming marketing alliances. At the same time, the moderating effect of R&D intensity implies that the internal investments in R&D magnify the effect of marketing alliances on firm profitability. The findings of this study contributes to the existing alliance literature in three aspects. First, this study enhances our understanding of the contingent value of marketing alliances by testing both internal and external factors that may influence the effectiveness of marketing alliances. Second, this study responds to the need for research that investigates actual performance resulting from interfirm relationships. Third, while previous studies primarily focused on a specific industry, this study extend previous findings of the boundary conditions for the benefits of marketing alliances in a broader context.

e-비즈니스 전략유형과 기업성과에 관한 연구 (A Study on The e-Business Strategy and Corporate Performance)

  • This study tests e-business performance difference of the inter group by strategy type through the cluster analysis, after confirming the linear relationship between the e-business strategy type and its performance. According to the result of the study the effect on the e-business performance reveals to differ by the e-business strategy type. That is to say, while the firm's information system performance, e-business realization and the inter group competition dominance are affected positively by the e-process strategy, web application strategy and customer attracting strategy. This confirms that the information system performance, the realization performance and the competition dominance are affected by e - business strategy type. The key factor leading to the success of e-business is the commitment of e-process strategy and web application strategy. For the case of the customer attracting strategy the result shows the importance of the strategy. In the cluster group analysis, the additional analysis, the effect is seen to be more powerful in the firm's information system performance, e - business realization and securing the competition advantage for the case of the multiple strategy than that of single one. Accordingly, the firm needs to adopt the multiple strategy suited for the characteristic of the firm rather than the single strategy.

정보기술 투자의사결정의 포괄적 고려가 기업 성과에 미치는 영향 (The Impact of Comprehensive Decision-Making of Information Technology Investment on Firm Performance)

  • When firms are confronted with IT investment decision-makings, technical or financial factors are widely considered. However, based on sociotechnical systems theory, it is argued that in addition to the traditional factors, social issues must be considered in the IT investment decision-makings. Even though the strategic criteria of social issues within organization are important for IT investment decision-makings, the social or organizational issues are hardly considered in IT implementation and adoption(Ryan and Harrison, 2000). The objective of this study is to empirically verify how the comprehensive consideration of both of technical and organizational issues related with IT investment affects firm performance through its impact on IT technical capability and IT personnel skills. Senior managers of 153 Korean firms were surveyed, and the collected data were analyzed with PLS technique. The results of the PLS path analysis show that the comprehensive consideration of the technical and social issues affected indirectly firm performance through IT technical capability and IT personnel skills. It is found that the comprehensive consideration had a significant impact on IT technical capability and IT personnel skills, and that IT technical capability and IT personnel skills affected firm performance. IT personnel was also found to affect IT technical capability. Finally, this study found that the consideration of social factors had greater impacts on firm performance than that of technical factors.

정보기술 루틴의 기업성과에 대한 영향 (An Impact of IT Routines on Firm Performance)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 정보기술 루틴이 기업 성과에 미치는 메커니즘을 검토하는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 기업성과, 비즈니스 프로세스 성과, 정보기술 인프라스트럭쳐 유연성, 정보기술 인력의 지식, 정보기술 루틴 등으로 구성되는 연구 모델을 제안한다. 연구 모델에서 정보기술 루틴은 다른 정보기술 능력들 (정보기술 인프라스트럭쳐 유연성, 정보기술 인력의 지식)에 일차적으로 영향을 미치고, 이어서 비즈니스 프로세스 성과에 영향을 통해 궁극적으로 기업성과에 간접적으로 영향을 미친다. 연구 모델은 243개의 기업 수준 데이터에 기반하여 검토되었는데, 분석도구로는 PLS를 사용하였다. 연구 결과, 연구 모델에서 제안된 모든 경로가 통계적으로 의미 있는 것으로 나타났다.

Relationship between Dynamic Digital Capabilities, Digital Transformation, Digital Technology Acceptance, and Firm Performance

  • Recent studies have introduced that digital transformation positively impacts firm performance. However, research on the relationship between organizational capabilities or attitudes as antecedents or situational variables for successfully driving digital transformation remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to systematically analyze how dynamic digital capabilities and the mutual relationships between organizational members' digital acceptance influence firm performance throughout the process of driving and achieving digital transformation. Research design, data, and methodology: This study developed the concepts and measurement items for each variable based on prior research. A survey was conducted with 258 companies participating in mini clusters within industrial complexes across the county. The data was analyzed using a structural equation model with the AMOS software package. Results: Based on existing literature, hypotheses were formulated regarding the causal relationships among variables, and analysis was conducted. The results indicate that digital transformation and employees' technological acceptance play a mediating role in the relationship between dynamic digital capabilities and firm performance. Specifically, the organization's dynamic digital capabilities enhance both digital transformation and technological acceptance. Moreover, digital transformation leads to higher firm performance when technological acceptance is high. Conclusions: This study has shown the importance of enhancing dynamic digital capabilities as a prerequisite for driving digital transformation and highlighted the significance of organizational members' perceptions and attitudes toward information technology. Particularly, through detailed causal analysis among the specific items of each variable, insights were gained for both academic and practical applications.

The Effect of Performance Feedback on Firms' Decision to Form an International Strategic Alliance and Performance in the Korean Manufacturing Industry

  • Purpose - International strategic alliance has been regarded as a strategic decision made by firms' managerial problems and ensure performance growth. From the perspective of the proactive behavior for changing strategies in a global market, this study aims to identify whether performance feedback influences firms' decisions to pursue strategic alliances. This study examines the effects of performance feedback on performance when firms use strategic alliances. Design/methodology - To analyze the impact of performance feedback on forming an international strategic alliance, this study adopt the concept of performance feedback to develop a research model and our hypotheses. Thus, this study used a two-stage least squares unbalanced panel data analysis with random effects. This study is based on 24,543 observations from Korean manufacturing firms from 2007 to 2016. Findings - The results show that firms pursue the formation of strategic alliances more actively, if their past financial and R&D performance are lower than their aspiration level, based on the result of performance feedback. An in split sample analysis for examining the effect of a firm's technology sophistication based on the OECD's classification, negative innovation performance discrepancy has positive effects on the probability of international alliance in high-tech and medium-high-tech industries. Financial performance also improves when a firm decides to form a strategic alliance based on the results of performance feedback. Originality/value - This research extends recent efforts to better understand the effect of performance feedback on firms' performance when they use strategic alliances. These findings suggest that the CEOs and managers of firms should consider the performance feedback perspective when deciding to pursue a strategic alliance to improve performance. In other words, the decision-makers in a firm must analyze and consider various complex variables inside and outside the firm and expand such subjects of examination to more complex and dynamic factors.

R&D 혁신역량과 기업성과 간의 관계: 대구지역 전략산업과 비전략산업 간 비교분석 (The Relationship between Innovation Capability of R&D and the Firm's Performance : Comparing Regional Strategy Industry with Non-Regional Strategy Industry in Daegu)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 R&D 혁신역량의 구성요소가 기업성과에 미치는 영향을 분석하고자 하는데 있다. 그리고 지역산업에 있어서 전략산업의 비중을 감안하여 전략산업과 비전략산업 간에 비교분석을 하고자 하였다. 주요 분석결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 전략산업과 비전략산업 간의 차이분석 결과를 보면 CEO 기술혁신의지를 제외한 모든 R&D 혁신역량 부문에 있어서 전략산업이 유의적으로 높게 나타났다. 기업성과에 있어서는 비유의적이지만 전략산업의 기업성과가 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 전략산업 간 차이분석을 한 결과를 보면 기업성과에 있어서 유의적인 차이를 보였다. 총자산순이익률의 경우 메카트로닉스와 전자정보기기산업이 가장높게 나타났고, 매출액성장률에서는 전자정보기기산업이 가장 높았다. R&D투입에 있어서 연구개발투자인력은 전자정보기기산업이 그리고 석 박사연구인력은 생물산업이 가장 높았고 모두 1% 유의수준에서 전략산업 간에 유의적인 차이를 보였다. R&D과정에 있어서는 기술혁신전략을 제외한 나머지 부분에서 전략산업 간 유의적인 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났고, 대부분에서 전기정보기기산업이 가장 높게 나타났다. R&D산출인 지적재산권 보유 정도에 있어서도 전자정보기기산업이 6.75건으로 가장 높았다. 셋째, 모든 산업에 있어서 R&D 혁신역량이 기업성과에 동일하게 영향을 미치지는 않고 있다는 점이다. 그리고 일반적으로 R&D투입이 기업성과에 양(+)의 영향을 미친다는 것과는 달리 석 박사연구인력과 같이 연구개발인력의 질이 더 유의적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 부분적이지만 R&D성과 보다는 R&D과정이 더 기업성과에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 R&D 혁신역량이라는 점을 함께 발견할 수 있었다.
