Fire performance and fire safety of high-rise buildings have become major concerns after the disasters of World Trade Center in the U.S. in 2001 and Windsor tower in Spain in 2005. Performance based design (PBD) approaches have been considered as a better method for fire resistance design of structures because it is capable of incorporating test results of most recent fire resistance technologies. However, there is a difficulty to evaluate fireproof performance of large structures, which have multiple structural members such as columns, slabs, and walls. The difficulty is mainly due to the limitation in the testing equipment, such as size of furnace that can be used to carry out fire tests with existing criteria like ISO 834, BS 476, and KS F 2257. In the present research, a large scale calorie meter (10 MW) was used to conduct three full scale fire tests on medical modular blocks. Average fire load of 13.99 $kg/m^2$ was used in the first test. In the second test, the weighting coefficient of 3.5 (the fire load of 50 $kg/m^2$) was used to simulate the worst fire scenario. The flashover of the medical modular block occurred at 62 minutes in the first test and 12 minutes in the second test. The heat resistance capacity of the external wall, the temperatures and deformations of the structural members satisfied the requirements of fire resistance performance of 90 minutes burning period. The total heat loads and the heat values for each test are calculated by theoretical equations. The duration of burning was predicted. The predicted results were compared with the test results, and they agree quite well.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop IoT multi-fire detectors combined smoke/carbon monoxide/heat and wireless IoT communication and to confirm the detect performance by smoke generator fire test and cotton wicks fire test. Method: The IoT multi-fire detector combined smoke and CO and combined smoke and heat were experimented the detect performance by smoke generator test and fire test of cotton wicks. And the case of fire alarm was checked. Result: The IoT multi-fire detector combined smoke and CO rung the alarm at the fire test of cotton wicks, did not ring the alarm at the smoke generator test. In comparison, the IoT multi-fire detector combined smoke and heat did not ring the alarm both at the smoke generator test and the fire test of cotton wicks. Conclusion: The IoT multi-fire detector combined smoke and CO detected the only smoke including the carbon monoxide and the IoT multi-fire detector combined smoke and heat did not ring the alarm for lack of heat. As a result, when the developed IoT multi-fire detector was detected the signal more than the set point, the fire alarm was sounded through cotton wicks fire test and smoke generator.
It is necessary to predict the activation time of fire detectors accurately to improve the reliability for evaluating the required safe egress time (RSET) in performance-based fire safety design. In this study, problems of the plunge test, which is widely applied in assessing fire detectors, were examined through experiments and numerical simulations. In addition, a new shield-cup test method was proposed to address these problems. A fire detector evaluator (FDE) developed in a previous study was applied to ensure measurement accuracy and reproducibility. During the plunge tests, a significant measurement error was observed in the activation time of the smoke detector because of the rapid flow change when the detector was input. However, during the shield-cup tests, slight changes occurred in the flow inside the FDE when the detector as exposed to smoke. In conclusion, the proposed shield-cup test method is expected to be useful for evaluating the response characteristics of fire detectors more accurately in simulated fire environments.
This report is explained about test results of carbon dioxide extinguiching system components and pack-age type system (Kits) for automatic fire extinguishing system. A carbon dioxide system may be used to protect one or more hazards or hazards by menas of directional valves. Package system shall be installed to protect hazards within the limitations. The testing program was progressed by three items, external oppearance test, performance test and Total Flooding Fire Extinguishing System test. The object of this report is present the problem which apperar from the analysis of test results.
Actual fire test under a laboratory and fire simulation by using computer are considered into main methodology in order to estimate and predict fire size of railway train. Even if practical fire size could be obtained from the full-model railway car test such as a large scale cone-calorimeter test, it is not always possible and realistic due to that expensive cost and attendant dangers could in no way be negligible. In this point of view, fire simulation analysis method based on the computational fluid dynamics could be proposed as an alternative and it seems to be also efficient and reasonable. However, simulation results have to be verified and validated in accordance with the proper procedure including comparing analysis with the actual fire test. In this paper, fire load and growth aspect was investigated through the room corner test (ISO 9705) for the mock-up model of the actual railway car. Then, it was compared with the output data derived from the simulation by using Pyrolysis Model of the FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator, by NIST) for the exact same domain and condition corresponding with pre-performed room-corner test. This preliminary verified and validated fire modeling method could enhance the reliability of output data derived from the fire simulation under the similar domain and condition.
The fire performance evaluation methods in Korea and overseas for interior finish materials were analysed and tested with gypsum board and Plywood by using room corner test not adopted by domestic code until now. The results of gypsum board (thickness:8 mm) and Plywood (thickness:4 mm) applying NFPA 265 and ISO 9705 test respectively are satisfied the assessment criteria. To assess a actual fire performance and classify fire hazard levels for interior finish materials, room-corner test and flame spread models should be adopted in building code and fire code to overcome limitations of current bench-scale test method.
This paper discusses the results and observations from a large-scale fire test conducted on a slim floor system, comprising asymmetric beams, rectangular hollow section beams and a composite floor slab. The structure was subjected to a fire where the fire load (combustible material) was higher that that found in typical office buildings and the ventilation area was artificially controlled during the test. Although the fire behaviour was not realistic it was designed to follow as closely as possible the time-temperature response used in standard fire tests, which are used to assess individual structural members and forms the bases of current fire design methods. The presented test results are limited, due to the malfunction of the instrumentation measuring the atmosphere and member temperatures. The lack of test data hinders the presentation of definitive conclusions. However, the available data, together with observations from the test, provides for the first time a useful insight into the behaviour of the slim floor system in its entirety. Analysis of the test results show that the behaviour of the beam-to-column connections had a significant impact on the overall structural response of the system, particularly when the end-plate of one of the connections fractured, during the fire.
With a rapid development of economy, more high-rise buildings are being constructed in large cities than before. As a result steel members such as beams, columns make a great role of the building construction, and the need of them to be protected to have enough fire resistance is in-creasing . But conducting a real fire test to all the members is almost impossible. So prior to do conduct a real fire test of the protected steel members, evaluating the fire resistant rating of them by means of their specific properties might be economical things. This study is aimed to introduce the fire resistant rating of protected steel members without a real fire test through the related studies and data.

In this study, combustibles investigation and fire growth rate experiment were performed for predicting initial fire behavior in buildings. Combustibles investigation was performed for residential buildings, which is most frequently affected by fire in Korea. Spatial characteristics and combustibles properties were separately investigated, and occupied area and layout characteristics of combustibles were identified to produce general layout models. Of the layout models, room was selected for fire test of a single compartment. From this test, fire propagation for each combustible was identified, which was delayed compared to the summed heat release rate of a single combustible.
The combustion characteristics of roof 'Jucsim' structure was analysed using real scale fire test on wooden structure heritage building. the fire test model was made to consider roof timberling internal structure for a Sunglemun. Structure of test body layed lime, soil, 'Jucsin' and ceiling board excepting roof tile to find heat propagation process by setting thermocouples. The first test to find fire growth and heat propagation process in the part of ceiling. The second test organized to find the efficiency of fire proof paint between ceiling board and inside of Jucsim structure. The third test try to get the performance level of fire proof fabric with the same manner. The result showed from the test proof the heavy smoke exposure with limited effect of fire proof paint however, reliable fire resistance effect showed in case of fire proof fabric.
