  • A sprinkler is a fire extinguishing equipment installed in a protected area where a detector or head detects a fire and automatically puts out the fire. However, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's "Regulations on Building Evacuation and Fire Protection Standards, etc." stipulate that fire compartment area should be reduced to three times by installing sprinkler facilities in the case of factories and warehouses. In this study, fire hazard was analyzed for a real PCB factory which mitigated the fire protection zone by sprinkler installation, and the head opening characteristics of sprinkler facilities through computer simulation, installation standards of sprinkler facilities, thermal performance, operating range, and the amount of water sprayed to identify the problems of operation of sprinkler facilities in case of fire, and to suggest the grounds such as required sprinkling flow rate for system improvement.

  • The new SOLAS regulation permits the alternative design approach for the approval of designs which deviate from those where prescriptive rules apply. The new approach is being promoted by recent advances of noble designs such as those employing large public spaces in passenger ships. From the respect of fire safety, it is needed to show that the level of safety of new design is equivalent to what can be achieved from the prescriptive rules where the fire simulation is regarded to be the essential tool. This paper provides an overview of the process of performance-based design of the smoke extraction system in a cafeteria of a ROPAX. FDS, a CFD fire simulation software is used to show that the field-model software can improve the fire safety over what are expected from prescriptive rule sets or zone-model application.

  • A general description of sprinkler activation time in compartment-fire-generated smoke layers is made. For calculation of the time hot layer temperature is obtained from two-layer zonal model and time constant of sprinkler is measured. Upper-layer thickness at the instant of sprinkler activation is also presented with changes of opening area. The outputs of the present study provide inputs for the interaction modeling of sprinkler spray and compartment fire environment, which simulates fire suppression phenomena.

  • Fire research is urgently needed so as to mitigate fire damage with moderate costs. A system of fire research consisting of basic research, applied research and development of new technology for fire prevention and protection is being formed in China. A general structure of organizations related to fire research is outlined. Typical research work in the State Key Lab of Fire Science is given as an example of fire research in China including: Field-Zone-Network modeling of building fire, mechanism of boilover, forest fire behavior, computer modeling of fire spread in micsogravity, and duality of fire rules and its application.

  • This study aims to suggest risk management plan including safety measures through hazard identification followed by consequence analysis in petrochemical plants. Consequence analysis was performed through practical release scenario by using PHAST RISK(ver. 6.7) software in the propylene recovery process(PRP). As results, consequences by fire or explosion accidents in the depropanizer zone, deethanizer zone and heat pump zone were relatively larger than other else zones among six process zones in the PRP. In the case of jet fire, it is recommendable not to install residence building within 200 m of the process zone. Additionally, process zones having large inventory or high pressure must be prevented from accidents and required to establish quick response against accidents.

  • Fire accidents in underground space may bring much loss of lives as well as properties and result in catastrophic disasters. This study aimed to manufacture the high-temperature furnace capable of simulating fire scenarios (RABT and RWS) and carry out the preliminary fire tests to evaluate fire-induced damage in underground structures. Specimens used in the fire tests were the concrete segments generally used in shield TBM tunnels. The simulated fire scenario was set to the RABT curve that is the most representative fire scenario in underground space. From the fire tests, the spalling was estimated to reach approximately 20cm from the surface exposed to fire. In addition, from the observation of core specimens obtained after fire tests, the deteriorated zone of unspalled specimens amounted to approximately 10cm from the surface of spalling.

  • The purpose of this study is to set up disaster prevention plan and risk assessment system considering combustion velocity at traditional housing zone. The combustion velocity analysis could contribute to build in disaster prevention technique through the potential risk analysis of the area, such analysis also able to set up comprehensive disaster prevention management system. Following results have achieved through the combustion velocity calculation. \circled1 The combustion velocity was calculated in order of the below winds, the above winds and the side winds. \circled2 It must be careful to set up disaster prevention plan in case of the below winds. \circled3 The combustion velocity was calculated at the density Bone where neighboring Distance and Length was small. \circled4 It proved that factors of each parameter not mostly effect to analyse the combustion velocity in limit of the 30 minutes after ignition. \circled5 At the density zone where Distance and Length is small the duration of transfer to neighboring house takes up to 4 minutes, it is required to set up of emergency response plan to minimize the fire dispersion.
