  • In general, existing emergency evacuation guiding systems depend on visual techniques like emergency lights or LEDs. Actually people in the case of fire emergency condition may not obtain a range of view because of smoke from the fire. This paper introduces a technique to design an emergency guiding system using directivity sound to cope with this problem. In this case all speakers are serially connected for audio signal transmission in a serial fashion to achieve convenient speaker installation. Floyd algorithm is used to find shortest evacuation paths. Because serially connected multi-channel speakers are weak in case of disconnection, this paper uses a technique to solve the diagnostic problem. In the proposed system, a PC based on the USB protocol is used for control and observation. The system has achievements, such as increasing evacuation rate under emergency conditions, and serial transmission of audio signal for easy maintenance and low installation cost.

  • Nowadays, the most of commercial buildings are build-out with complex architecture and decorated with more complicated interiors of buildings so establishing intelligible escape routes becomes an important case of fire or other emergency in a limited time. The commercial buildings are already equipped with multiple exit signs and these exit signs may create confusion and leads the people into different directions under emergency. This can jeopardize the emergency situation into a chaotic state, especially in a complex layout buildings. There are many research focused on implementing different approached to improve the exit sign system with better visual navigating effects, such as the use of laser beams, the combination of audio and video cues, etc. However the digital signage system based emergency exit sign management is one of the best solution to guide people under emergency situations to escape. This research paper, propose an intelligent evacuation route GUIDE that uses the combination centralized Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and digital signage for people safety and avoids dangers from emergency conditions. This proposed system applies WSN to detect the environment condition in the building and uses an evacuation algorithm to estimate the safe route to escape using the sensor information and then activates the signage system to display the safe evacuation route instruction GUIDE according to the location the signage system is installed. This paper presented the prototype of the proposed signage system and execution time to find the route with future research directions. The proposed system provides a natural intelligent evacuation route interface for self or remote operation in facility management to efficiently GUIDE people to the safe exit under emergency conditions.

  • In Korea, in the case of fire scenarios in performance design, it is assumed that the sprinkler is not working. In addition, it does not applicate various fire conditions. Therefore it is not enough that the accuracy about fire scenario. In foreign countries, reseach is being conducted to predict the casualities that can occur due to fire in the building space through statistical risk analysis. Also, research is consistently conducting for design that consider the sprinker probability of operation. Therefore, to analyze the fire risk of each building in Korea, the risk was analyzed using statistical data. As a result, the risk of casualties that can occur for each building use was analyzed as 0.6(persons/cases) for residential buildings, 0.25(persons/cases) for sales facilities, and 0.12(persons/cases) for buisiness facilities.

  • The fact that the smoke hinders evacuation and fire-fighting activities as well as becomes the major cause of life casualty emphasizes the importance of smoke control system. As one of the fire safety standards designed to secure the smoke safety, NFSC501A (Design Guide for Smoke Control System of Special Evacuation Stairwell and Lobby) has been proposed, preventing smoke from penetrating into the smoke-free escape route by raising the pressure of the smoke control zone higher than fire area. For model building of 20 stories, pressurization system was designed according to standard and pressure field of compartments in whole building induced by pressurization system was analyzed using the network model.

  • The University library is a reality where facilities can be a massive upset by the space of students to study space and book materials. Also, many print materials can cause fires quickly in fires, resulting in massive amounts of human casualties caused by many toxic gases. This study purpose is compares the time spent in the evacuation of the current state through the simulation, which seeks to derive a reasonable library of evacuation design, and improved inside the evacuation. As a result, the most obvious way to reduce the time required to evacuate is to diversify the evacuation routes and to disperse them. However, if the extension of the gate is not feasible, it is possible to reduce the time of escape by increasing the width of the gate and the width of the stair. If the results of this study are applied to new construction or remodeling of the library and prepare for fire evacuation, it will be a much safer library facility.

  • In the past two decades, researchers from different countries have conducted series of experimental and theoretical studies to investigate the behaviour of structures in fire. Many new insights, data and calculation methods have been reported, which form the basis for modern interdisciplinary structural fire engineering. Some of those methods are now adopted in quantitative performance-based codes and have been migrated into practice. Mainly based on the achievements in structural fire research at China, the Chinese national code for fire safety of steel structures in buildings has been drafted and approved, and will be released in this year. The code is developed to prevent steel structures subjected to fire from collapsing, ensure safe evacuation of building occupants, and reduce the cost for repairing the damages of the structure caused by fire. This paper presents the main contents of the code, which includes the fire duration requirements of structural components, fundamental requirements on fire safety design of steel components, temperature increasing of atmosphere and structural components in fire, loading effect and capacity of various components in fire, and procedure for fire-resistant check and design of steel components. The analytical approaches employed in the code and their validation works are also presented.

  • This paper proposes a method of design and implementation a simulation system in which humans can plan their evacuation paths in a high-rise building considering damages from high temperature and smoke in case of fire. Humans in evacuation search the nearest exit and follow a path to the exit. When humans are evacuating toward an exit, they are going to move with their highest speeds. However, many environmental factors prohibit their fast movements. In this paper, we calculate the evacuation speed of each human considering temperature damage and smoke damage. We restrict the number of humans that can be evacuated per second according to the actual size of the exit door. Experimental results showed that the evacuation speed is affected by the temperature condition and the smoke density.

  • In this study, we investigated whether the evacuation time according to the exit installation standards specified in the building code during a food factory fire is compatible with the evacuation time based on the performance-based design specified by the fire department, in order to determine if evacuation safety is ensured. We used the Pathfinder program to confirm the evacuation time, and experimented with three scenarios for exit installation standards towards the outside of the building: 60m, 80m, and 100m. The target building in the experiment corresponded to the building code's exit installation standard of 100m from each dwelling. The experimental results showed tt in the cases of 80m and 100m, ASET exceeded RSET, indicating tt evacuation safety was not ensured, while in the case of 60m, evacuation safety was maintained. Through this study, it was confirmed tt even when the exit installation standards towards the outside of the building are met, evacuation safety may not be guaranteed.
