  • In this paper, we report our successful implementation of Q tensor model in threedimensional finite element method (FEM) simulator. The 3D-FEM Q tensor-model-based simulation revealed that the spaly-to-bend transition occurs only at 4 V while the vector-model based FEM solver provides an erroneous transition voltage of 8 V.

  • This paper proposes an efficient method for 3-dimensional capacitance extraction based on Finite Element Method(FEM). This method expands the conventional FEM by adopting variable division. This method improves the extraction efficiency 2 to 100 times and even the accuracy 1% to 3% when compared to the conventional FEM with equal division. The Proposed method can be used efficiency to extract electrical parameters of on/off-chip interconnects in VLSI systems.

  • The fracture mechanics make it possible to characterize the behavior with cracking of structures using parameters quantifiable in the sense of the engineer, in particular the stress field, the size of the crack, and the resistance to cracking of the material. Any structure contains defects, whether they were introduced during the production of the part (machining or molding defects for example). The aim of this work is to determine numerically by the finite element method the stress concentration factor Kt of a plate subjected to a tensile loading containing a lateral form defect with different sizes: a semicircle of different radii, a notch with different opening angles and a crack of different lengths. The crack propagation is then determined using the extended finite element technique (X-FEM). The modeling was carried out using the ABAQUS calculation code.

  • The finite element method (FEM) is suitable for the analysis of a complicated region that includes nonlinear materials, whereas the boundary element method (BEM) is naturally effective for analyzing a very large region with linear characteristics. Therefore, considering the advantages in both methods, a novel algorithm for the alternate application of the FEM and BEM to magnetic field problems with the open boundary is presented. This approach avoids the disadvantages of the typical numerical methods with the open boundary problem such as a great number of unknown values for the FEM and non-symmetric matrix for the Hybrid FE-BE method. The solution of the overall problems is obtained by iterative calculations accompanied with the new acceleration method.

  • This work presents the three-dimensional extended strain smoothing approach in the framework of finite element method, so-called smoothed finite element method (S-FEM) for quasi-incompressible hyperelastic materials undergoing the large deformations. The proposed method is known that the incompressible limits, such as over-estimation of stiffness and distorted mesh sensitivity, can be overcome in two dimensions. Therefore, in this paper, the idea of Cell-based, Edge-based and Node-based strain smoothing approaches is extended to three-dimensions. The construction of subcells and smoothing domains for each methods are explained. The smoothed strain-displacement matrix and the stiffness matrix are obtained on each smoothing domain in the same manner with two-dimensional S-FEM. Various numerical tests are studied to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of 3D-S-FEM. The obtained results are compared with analytical solutions to express the efficacy of the methods.

  • This paper presents a comparative study of analytical method and finite element method (FEM) for analysis of a continuous contact problem. The problem consists of two elastic layers loaded by means of a rigid circular punch and resting on semi-infinite plane. It is assumed that all surfaces are frictionless and only compressive normal tractions can be transmitted through the contact areas. Firstly, analytical solution of the problem is obtained by using theory of elasticity and integral transform techniques. Then, finite element model of the problem is constituted using ANSYS software and the two dimensional analysis of the problem is carried out. The contact stresses under rigid circular punch, the contact areas, normal stresses along the axis of symmetry are obtained for both solutions. The results show that contact stresses and the normal stresses obtained from finite element method (FEM) provide boundary conditions of the problem as well as analytical results. Also, the contact areas obtained from finite element method are very close to results obtained from analytical method; disagree by 0.03-1.61%. Finally, it can be said that there is a good agreement between two methods.

  • This study is concerned with the analysis of two-dimensional steady magnetic fields by the coupling of FEM and BEM. FEM(Finite Element Method)is most widely used as a method of numerical analysis and BEM (Boundary Element Method)is a newest method for it. And the results from this coupling method are compared and discussed with those of FEM only. Consequently, it is shown that to obtain the same accuracy of results the coupling method requires less calculating time and dimension than the FEM.

  • This paper presents an application of an impedance boundary condition to 3D vector finite element analysis of a multi-port cylidrical microwave cavity using Snell's law. Computing memory benefits and computing time reduction are obtained from this method compared with the conventional finite element method(FEM). To verify the method, a high permittivity scatterer in free space is analyzed and compared with the results of conventional (FEM). In addition, this method has been analyzed several types of cavities, including water load, to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the program.

  • With the accuracy of the nonlinearity guaranteed, plenty of time and large memory space are needed when we solve the finite element numerical solution of nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper, we use the Group Element Method (GEM) to deal with the non-linearity of the BBM-Burgers Equation with Conservation form and perform a numerical analysis for two particular initial-boundary value (the Dirichlet boundary conditions and Neumann-Dirichlet boundary conditions) problems with the Finite Element Method (FEM). Some numerical experiments are performed to analyze the error between the exact solution and the FEM solution in MATLAB.
